Between the Beltways

Hamlet starts Jan 16 at the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Chesapeake Shakespeare will be doing Red Velvet, which is a play about Ira Aldridge, an African American actor who was unexpectedly tapped to play Othello in 1833 in London. 1833 is obviously post-period, but the show is also about fashions in acting/interpreting the Shakespearean repertoire, which is something we wrestle with today.

Folger Consort will perform music of Hildegard von Bingen at the National Cathedral in A Branch of Freshest Green.

The Freer/Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian is hosting many interesting exhibits that fall within ourperiod:

• Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt closes Jan 15, so go soon!• Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice across Asia opened this fall and remains until

2020.• Promise of Paradise: Ancient Chinese Buddhist Sculpture focuses on 8th and 9th cen works.• Resound: Ancient Bells of China is on view until 2020 as well.

Early Music DC lists medieval and Renaissance music happening in the area. Piffaro is performing Jan 21, which is unfortunately our populace meeting – but if you aren't going to the meeting and you like recorder music, go see them! They're great!

Beyond the Beltway • A selection of the famous Terracotta Warriors are at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in

Richmond through March 11.• Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer at the Met Museum in NYC, through Feb 12.

There are some other medieval and Renaissance exhibits there, as well.

Overheard and UnattributedSaid at the populace meeting; we won't say by whom

Go visit your family even if you don’t like them.

Unconscious people do not want tea

(with googly eyes) Hi baby, I love you!

Cold Weather EventsBy Mistress Teleri the Well-Prepared

Tournament of Ymir is coming! Maybe you’ve heard that it’s a ton of fun, but also that it can be really, really cold. How do you survive a frosty weekend out of doors? The Scandinavians say there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes – dress well for warmth.

First, remember - it’s not all outsideYmir will have an A&S hall, a dining hall, and a kitchen. The A&S hall and the kitchen are heated. Heaters will be provided for the performing arts space (I’m not sure if it’s indoors or out) and the dining hall. Go inside to warm up.

“Warming drinks” can make you colderAlcohol makes you feel warmer because it dilates blood vessels, bringing warm blood from your coreup to the surface of your skin. That might feel nice, but you're just sending cooler blood back into your core and lowering your body temperature overall.

Stay dryWater is a better conductor than air, so wet clothes will conduct heat away from your body better than dry ones. It doesn’t matter if the wetness comes from external sources (rain, snow) or internal ones (sweat).

• A water-resistant outer layer will keep your dry if there is rain.• Wool keeps you warm even when wet, so wool jackets or cloaks are great for this outer layer• Skin layer should wick moisture away from the skin. Modern performance sports gear, fine

wool, and silk are all recommended for warmth and wicking. Linen is not especially warm, but is a good wicking fabric. Cotton, which absorbs and holds moisture, is not.

• If you find yourself getting hot and sweaty, remove layers to stay dry.• If you can’t remove layers because you’re in armor, make sure you have clean, dry clothes to

put on when you’re done fighting.• Bring an extra set of clean, dry clothes (period or mundane) and leave them in your car. If all

your other gear gets soaked, wear these. This includes shoes!• You can never have enough dry wool socks.

Wear layersLayers let you adjust for how warm or cold you are, preventing sweating. They also add warmth.

• The skin layer, as mentioned above, should be a wicking layer. Thin silk thermal underwear don’t add bulk, are surprisingly warm, and are at least a period material (even if they aren’t period garments). Your linen undershirt or underdress will also work.

• The middle layer(s) are meant to trap warm air next to your body. Fluffy is good here. Woolis a great choice, but even additional layers of linen are better than nothing.

• Consider bringing multiple middle layers you can try to find the most comfortable combination. Maybe two linen gowns is better than one woolen one for you, or visa versa.

• Fur (real or fake) is great at trapping air next to the body, especially when used to line a garment.

6

Page 7: The Drekkar - Barony of Storvik -...Volume 39 The Drekkar Newsletter of the Barony of Storvik in the Kingdom of Atlantia, branch of the SCA, Inc. January, A.S. LII (2018) Issue 1 Storvik

◦ Auction sites like eBay often offer old fur, somewhat worn, fur garments for crafting purposes

◦ Modern fake fur is amazing. It is also synthetic - I would not recommend it for wearing near open flames.

• The outer layer should be windproof or at least wind-resistant as well as water-resistant. Wind will steal away the warm air you’ve carefully stored in your middle layer. Real fur does this by virtue of the leather it’s attached to. Woolens with a tight twill weave, or thick, boiledwoolens are also good choices.

Protect your extremitiesCold hands and feet can make you miserable. Bundle them up!

• Wear layers of socks, a thinner inner sock (or linen hose) and an outer woolen one.• Wear layers of hand-warming things. I like a thin, lined leather glove inside a woolen mitten.

◦ If you haven’t owned mittens since you were a kid and the local S-Mart only has polar fleece ones, look for something in either a natural color (white, off-white, brown, grey, black) or one in a color you use for your garb.

• Cover your head and neck. Put on a scarf before you don your outer body layer to mostly hide it, if it doesn’t go with your garb. Find a warm hat. Ladies, this is a great time to try one of the more elaborate wimpled looks, with linen or light-to-medium wool covering your neck and head. You could also probably fit a slim beanie hat under the veils.

• If the weather is forecast to be wet, and your shoes are not waterproof, bring extra shoes.

That got you through the day, and many winter events are day trips. But Ymir is a winter camping event - how do you sleep without freezing?

CabinsYmir has heated cabins with bathrooms. Each cabin sleeps eleven.

• This year, the event is at a new site, so we don’t have any reports on what the cabins are like. Snug? Draughty? You’ll be bringing your own bedlinens anyway, so throw an extra blanket in there in case it’s more chilly than you expect.

• Enter and exit cabins quickly, so you don’t let all the heat out• If there is snow or mud on your shoes, try to kick off as much as possible before you open

the door and enter the cabin. Keep the wet stuff outside.• Someone will be up later/up earlier/snoring. Bring ear plugs.• If there are bunk beds - don’t be That Guy who grabs two sets of bunks and curtains them

off to make a semi-private room for two, unless you reserved for four.

TentsYes, you can camp in a tent at Ymir!

• Sleeping bags are rated for survival. For comfort, pick a bag that’s rated at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the overnight lows you intend to sleep through.

7

Page 8: The Drekkar - Barony of Storvik -...Volume 39 The Drekkar Newsletter of the Barony of Storvik in the Kingdom of Atlantia, branch of the SCA, Inc. January, A.S. LII (2018) Issue 1 Storvik

• Mummy bags are considered the warmest, because there is no extra space that you have to heat up with your body heat. However, there’s an advantage to rectangular bags, too - you can put tomorrow’s clothes down around your feet. Keeps you warmer, and your clothes won’t be freezing in the morning.

• If you prefer to sleep under blankets, I would recommend doing a test run: take the set of blankets you intend to bring out to your car some cold night, and sit there for an hour or so. If you get cold, you’ll need more or warmer blankets.

• Put on clean, dry wool socks (or other warm, soft footgear) before bed. Wear a hat to bed.• Something goes under your sleeping bag to insulate you from the ground or air mattress: a

mylar ‘space blanket’, a thick wool blanket, a foam sleeping mat. ◦ If you are sleeping on a futon, you’re probably fine.

• The site is in a pine forest, so there ought to be good windbreaks for tent campers. Just like we want to insulate our bodies from wind, we want to protect our tent as well.

• Bring a smaller tent, if you can. Your body is the only source of heat, so the less space you have to heat, the better.

• Your body is the only source of heat. Burning things inside your tent can kill you, either fromfire or from carbon monoxide. Even if your friend’s brother did it at Gulf Wars and was fine.◦ If you have an expeditionary tent with built-in vents for a stove and the stove to go with

it, assuming you follow the directions, you’re okay.◦ Chemical handwarmers are okay, but I would not recommend sleeping with one. It can

get hotter than you realize and burn you if you are not awake to regulate it.◦ Bottles of hot or warm water are safe, as long as the bottle isn’t going to leak or scald

you.• There will be some portajohns on the list field and bathrooms in the A&S hall. If you have

friends in a cabin, they may let you use their bathroom. But nothing is better for middle-of-the-cold-night bathroom runs than something inside your tent.

Thanks to Maistir Gaelan mac Cuinnegain,, the autocrat for Ymir, for information on the facilities, and to Baroness Sophia the Orange, for getting me in touch with Maistir Galen.

Seneschal/Exchequer Meeting (Kunigunde reporting)

• Went over harassment policy

• Officers should be a model and develop healthy relationships and follow chain of command. Guide others about consent. Report and document events.

• People stop participating if there is a culture of bullying or harassment.

• Event announcements have to be in the Acorn 2 to 3 months before event and costs have to be published. If you don't publish costs in the Acorn, you are not allowed to charge anything at the event. Put in event costs even if you have to change them later. You can list a price higher than you expect to need and charge less at the gate.

• New Exchequer handbook on SCA.org

• Baronies will have to update financial policies to meet the new rules but the Kingdom forms haven't been approved yet by the SCA BoD.

• There will be new event bid and reporting forms.

14

• Kingdom Exchequer needs replacement when she steps down in May 2018. Also needs a Maryland regional deputy.

• Baronial inventory should be done; the group (not individual) has to decide if items will be sold or disposed of. Suggests a "financial committee". Mark baronial property and track it.

• Request Paypal 3 months in advance of your events. It closes 2 weeks before the event. Ask Alana for Paypal training with Triangle thing. Paypal charges $0.30 + 2%. Make sure you get a good cell phone signal at the site you want to set up Troll, or set up a hot-spot.
