From the ChroniclerSame woman, new name. Having visited Herald’s Point at Pennsic, I was surprised to find I had a double. Hence, the name change. To prevent confusion, I’ve adopted the name Alissenda la Gailharde, pending acceptance from the SCA . You can still reach me at [email protected] .

Schlagers and Lagers, Arrows and Ales Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Hosted by the Barony of An DubhaigeainnFighting, archery, brews and good food! What more could you want from an event?

The Barony of AnDubhai-gainn welcomes all good gentles to experience the varied talents of our popu-lace, Especially our greatest talents; fighting and brew-ing (drinking takes a close third). For the archers there will be a tournament for Baronial Archery Champion, all are welcome to participate whether declared for cham-pion or not.

For the Rapier fighters there will be a Tavern Tourna-ment to test that all-important skill, Bar Brawling. There with also be a Dueling Tournament throughout the day where you can challenge other fencers to duels using as much period style (seconds, insults, challenges, betting, etc.) as you like. Thirdly,

since every authorized fencer in our Barony carries a full card, there will be a progressive weapons tour-ney, single sword default because all are welcome.

There will be a light day board served throughout the day, and a hearty eve board at night so that all appetites will be appeased. Rather then a sit down feast, the evening meal will be served “cocktail party” style so that there will be opportunity to peruse the many brews available for tasting.

Speaking of brews, there will be brewing competi-tions to wet the parched. Our good Baron Ateno will be running and in charge of judging the brewing compe-titions (its good to be the Baron). The categories in-clude; most period recipe, nonalcoholic, and populous choice. That's right, we get to help!Hard suit fighters are wel-come; so don't leave your armor at home. For evening

entertainment, there will be a “Period Pub Song” com-petition, winner by popu-lous choice.

Stained Glass & Sewing WorkshopsFirst and Third Sundays of the month at 1 P.M.1079 Callahan Street, Bay Shore, NY 11706Continuing on Sunday, September 21, Baroness Liesl (Wanda Peck) will gra-ciously open her home for not one, but two workshops. Classes will be held on the first and third Sundays of the month (excluding holiday’s). They will include:

1) Sewing all levels (beginner to advanced, also specific project problems).

2) Stained Glass. Same days and times, but only by advance appointment. Classes can be theory & history only or practical. For hands on work you may bring your own supplies or purchase them yourself. You can call Liesl for guidance. 631-243-4734

In addition, Sir Richard Blackmore has offered to open his extensive library on Arms & Armor for on-site pe-rusal by interested parties while the classes are going on.

Book Review: Da Vinci's Kitchen, A Secret History of Italian Cuisinebook by Dave DeWitt, review by Damianna de Londres

When I took this book out of the library I was looking forward to a simple read. Instead, I admit to getting a bit of a head-ache. Written by Dave DeWitt, a well known food author, the book is a mixed bag with tangents and inserts constantly distracting me from the recipes. On the good side for those sticklers for his-tory, the photos of tools used in a kitchen are well sourced. However, the recipes - both ‘Modern’ and ‘Classic’ have already been interpreted for modern kitchens. I would take the road of caution about their historical authenticity for those seeking to recreate a period dish.

The author takes a look at the kitchens and foods of seven historical people ( Leonardo Da Vinci, Maestro Martino, Platina, Bartolomeo Scappi, Ludovico Sforza, Cathrine De Medici, and Salai) over a time period of 1452 to 1542. It would all be so simple IF that was it. Ah, but those pesky in-serts. Here’s where the author can roam as far afield as including information on the 2005 Euro-chocolate fair. This is what made the book a bit of a headache for me. You must read it with atten-tion, or you will easily lose track of either the historical period or historical person being refer-enced.

That said, to the author’s credit there is alot of interesting period stuff that not only can help with a person’s cooking but a person’s period persona. A good example of this is his discussion of the

fork which includes various theories by food historians as well as ‘evidence’ in the form of period paintings, a source fairly easy to check on. Vegetarian's may find some new interesting facts here as well.

As De Witt notes in his "Futher Reading" list, thousands of pages of Leonardo's Codices are not yet translated and there-fore not available to the general public. But isn't that where we get the ‘creative’ part in SCA? For we never know when new translations, newly discovered paintings, etc. will be released to the public and expand our knowledge of the past.

I would save this book as a good winter read. We have done some of the recipes and they were tasty. But this is not the book to relax with after a hectic day.

Pennsic Report: Notes from the War

by Caivs Eqvitivs Hilarivs and Alissenda la Gailharde

The Fighting of the Thirty-seventh Pennsic WarAttention Lords and Ladies, the brave fighters representing our Barony of An Dubhaigeainn have done much for the East in the 37th Pennsic War. Our beloved Barony joined the grand forces of the Wetlands Alliance and was accompanied by the fighters of Three Skulls who had vowed themselves to the Coronet for the war. These fine soldiers of the Wetlands fought under the banner of the Southern Army, and on the field fought most commonly alongside Silver Keep, Black Talon, and House Serpentius. Also

hailing from within our borders, Surtr’s Brood made good measure of themselves and won much honor, fighting alongside the forces of Ulsterblichen. Though the war-points themselves had been ceded before fighting itself broke out, the fighters of the An Dubhaigeainn and the Wetlands Alliance were still ready and willing to do their duty to the His Majesty Konrad, and East, not to mention let the Midrealm know the blows of their rattan and the charge of their shields. ! The fighting was fierce from the onset but the stalwart fighters of the Barony held fast, and though the gates of Rome were lost on the first day of the war, at no time did they flee the breach assigned to them and fought hard keeping their honor intact. Our fighters’ greatest victory took place at the bridge battle, where the East successfully broke the lines of the Midrealm army in two of the three attempts upon the river, and surrounded their forces

amongst a great revelry from the mouths of His Majesty’s troops. The war came to an end amidst a most amiable resolution between their majesties Konrad, and Lutr; it was here in that the armies serving both the East and the Mid joined in a brotherly embrace upon the list field. At this most memorable junc-tion, both armies though they had been enemies fought aside one an-other against the rest of the known world, and emerged triumphant. The war was most notably filled with a good spirit of competition, in-spired by which the soldiers and allies of An Dubhaigeainn did try their hardest upon the list field, and did many great deeds in battle for their kingdom.

Lucas von Aych wins Novice Tourney We knew something was up when his new baron entered camp carrying Lu-cas’ shield. Lucas, lately moved to the Barony of Ponte Alto from An Dubhai-geainn, did us all proud when he took top honors at the Novice Tournament. Along with getting to wear the victor’s belt for the coming year, Lucas also won some nifty prizes - a carved drinking horn and new gauntlets, among other goodies. Alas, your reporter neglected to get the names of the SCA arti-sans who donated their work as prizes. Trust me, they were drool worthy.

If you’d like to see Lucas in action against Joseph of House Serpentius, check out this short video on YouTube: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=d5_sc0bad2Y

Some thank you’s:We would be remiss if we did not thank the people who worked so hard to make our Baronial camp a fun, comfortable and welcoming place. Even before we hit the first stake into the ground, Peter of Hawkwoods was working behind the scenes to make sure we had luxurious camp services including filtered water, a huge camp shower and changing room, and a well equipped camp kitchen, among other amenities. He and Sorcha got to Pennsic early and left late to make sure all the baronial gear was functional and safe. Lots of hands make light work (ok, lighter work) and big thank you’s are owed to everyone who helped with set up and break down. You know who you are and we love you! We had a new treat this year when Marc Redgate and his son, Doug, installed a solar powered DVD player for our very own Medieval Movie Nights. And thanks to all who make the Ice Cream Social such a wonderful part of Pennsic. The strength of a Barony is in its people and we have a heck of a populace. Vivat to all the helping hands and creative minds!

Baron Ateno of Annun Ridge awarded the Pelican

Who’s that man in the red cape? It’s our very own Superman, Baron Ateno! Never suspecting as Lady Gianetta and Lady Giovanna sewed away at the cloak right under his nose, His Excellency was as surprised as we were proud when King Konrad and Queen Brenwen called him into East Kingdom Court to bestow the well earned honors.

Event reports

Potted Arms and Fancy Faire by Damianna de Londres

Once again the incipient Canton of Hawks Reach has served our Baron and Baroness not only a fine day board, but much more. Let’s start with our Ba-ronial Fencing Champion, Baron Jean Xavier Bouil-ler, who is not only priceless in skill as a fencer but who fetched the best price in the 3rd Annual Hat Auction. Vivat to Moresca and her auctioneer skills throughout the day! The award adorning our Baro-nial Fencing Champion is a magnificent set consist-ing of a grand sword whose hilt carries our Barony’s symbol, a leather baldric dyed and hand-painted by Firebow, and a presentation box hand crafted by Pe-ter of Hawkwoods. Peter’s work was also featured in the merchant section where he is known as the man who makes those addictive lucets for the la-dies. Speaking of the merchant section, wares dis-played included chain mail accessories, fabric, trim and jewelry, among other offerings.

And while it was a day for the fencers, our fine heavy weapons fighters made the most of their time with pick up matches. We’ve also added to our numbers as Marcus (Marc Redgate) has passed for heavy weapons. Vivat Marcus!!

The arts and Sciences display was inspiring. Not only did it include the baldric and box made for the Champion’s sword, but several other impressive weapons were displayed including handmade knives and a holder by Marcus and his Docomo style arbalest which was later authorized in a sepa-rate event. Those who visited us from Ostgardr’s Broken Bridge brought with them a preview of an article on champion birds they will be sending in hopes of getting it printed in Tournaments Illumi-nated. This kind visitor, also quick of hand, made a bird toy on the spot to add to her report.

As the day grew hot and tiring many of us grew thirsty. Luckily, we had three fine brewers that day: Magnus with his wonderful tastings from the Me-adery, Baron Steffan de Londres who provided alco-holic as well as non-alcoholic brews and conducted a honey tasting, and – not to be outdone - John the Bear of Ostgardr with his cordials.

This event just gets better over time! If you didn’t make it this year, please be sure to mark you calen-dar for next year’s Potted Arms and Fancy Faire.

John Barleycorn by Baron Ateno of Annun Ridge

First, thank you to everyone that showed up. We as a barony had over 15 people show up to tempt the wind and rain. Given the distance and location that

is quite a showing! Many people did dif-ferent things during the day and the rain held off until court that afternoon. Speaking of court, two things of interest for An Dubhaigeainn: Our own Baron Jean Xavier was given the Highest available East Kingdom award for fencing called the Order of the Golden Rapier, and your Bar-

oness and mine, Lassar Ingen Aeda, was the overall winner of the Heavy List, which included fighting, test on knightly knowledge and actions throughout the tournament sponsored by Viscount Sir Edward. The feast came out on time and the rain let up enough that the road home was much easier than it could have been. See you all at Schlagers & Lagers, Arrows and Ale.

F R O M T H E C O R O N E T

Pennsic is over for another year. What a War it was, from Opening Ceremonies, to the Three Skulls party, to spending a quiet time at Suturs Brood camp to the last meal with the camp clean up crew.

An Dubhaigeainn and its allies were active in all the martial war points. We, as your Baron and Baron-ess, are so proud of everyone that participated. We had eight heavy fighters (not including us) So thanks to Hilarivs, Catriona, Victorio, David, Titus, Ryan McWhite, Ryan the Lost (Cat), and a sad but exciting good bye to Lucas von Aych who won the All-Pennsic Novice Tourney this year. Fencing had Jean Xavier with David and Victorio doing double duty. At the Archery targets were Eanring, Darren and Peter of Hawkwoods. After the martial fun we were treated to movies by Marcus and Douglas. That’s the first time we know of that movies were played at Pennsic at a walk up theater.

At our Pennsic war court, we recognized Eanring and Christine for services rendered at Pennsic and Ryan the Lost for her support of our fighters after her injury got worse and she was unable to fight. Also HouseThree Skulls were recognized for their fighting prowess, with the household receiving the Drakes Spur. Last but not least, Peter of Hawks-wood was recognized d for exemplaryservice as campmaster, receiving both our person token and a Silver Feater.

We plan on representing the Barony at Barleycorn at Ostgardr and also attending Schlagers and Lagers. St. Andrews is set for November 1st, at a new loca-tion. Anyone interested in learning how this event runs, contact your Baron.

We are will be holding a armor/forging session on October 19th starting at noon at our house. Please

contact us if your interested in coming. As ever, call or E-mail us with any concerns or questions you have.

In Service,

Ateno and Lassar
