All who read these present letters, pay heed to the words of Celricand Ilaria, Baron and Baroness of Storvik!

Novice Tourney was an amazing success!

We’ve had a few requests for what our schedule might be like after Pennsic War, with regard to events. I’ll warn you now – we’re pretty active in the Spring and Autumn (and summer, really), so there’s a good chance that we’llbe at the same event you will, and we’d love to share the Baronial Space with the group. After all, we’re here to promote the interests of the Barony across this wonderful Kingdom and that will always include each member of our group. If you’re really hoping to see us at an event you’re traveling to, shoot us an email and we’ll see what we can do. Obviously, we’re more likely to attend an event that is ‘local’ to Maryland, because that builds good neighbors and lulls them into a false sense of complacency for future raids… I mean… trades.

OYEZ! OYEZ!Baronial News Highlights

Investiture and Novice Pictures: Lady Isabella kindly shared a link to her online photo album, with many beautiful pictures of the day's events.

Post-Pennsic A&S Class Note Swap Meet: The pre-business meeting A&S this month (4-6pm, Aug 21, site in back of Drekkar) is a chance to get together and see what classes other people made it to at Pennsic. Bring your notes and class handouts, and we'll share knowledge.

We Are the Champions: Their Excellencies are looking for a new A&S Champion to reprsent the barony. If interested, send a 'resume' (a description of what art you do) to [email protected] and [email protected] . A Champion will be selected at Battle on the Bay.

Volunteers needed for Site Committee: We've been saying it for years: we need more potential sites. Carlyle will be spearheading an effort to create a list of potential sites, and the Baron and Baroness are looking for gentles to help. Contact [email protected] to volunteer.

Were you 'Born on the Listfield'?: Good, then you know what a list fence needs! We need to know. The baronial list fence is no longer adequate. Send your ideas for a fence that will address the requirements in the Marshal's Handbook as well as appearance, cost, and logistics of getting it to/from sites to [email protected] .

Word-Fame Wanted: Baroness Ilaria will add a bead to her Viking necklace for every award recommendation she receives and for every tale of good work by her people that comes to her ears. If you see your fellow Storviki being awesome, let her know ([email protected]) – our baroness needs swag! (And cc [email protected], and I'll put it in the Skol! feature, below.)

Do You Wanna Dance?: Then hold my hand as we get ready to double forward, double back. Storvik will be hosting the Known World Dance and Music Symposium, June 15-17, 2017! Lady Sonya Flicker will autocrat at a Bright Hills site (the hotel used for ChessieCon and Darkover), ably assisted by Master Stephan of Cambion. Watch this space for calls for volunteers. There is also a Facebook page. This event is a multi-day experience full of classes aimed at the medieval and renaissance time period. Past events have had several tracks of dance classes covering topics like: Italian dance from the 15th century, Italian dance from the 16th century, dances from England, and dancesfrom France. These classes have ranged from rank beginner to wow that was difficult. We will also have music classes focusing on the same genres listed above as well as additional topics that are specific to musicians. On Friday and Saturday nights, there willbe balls!

Speaking of Skol!: I am but one person, and a fallible one. If you know of service that ought to be cheered here in the Drekkar – including your own! - please contact me and let me know.

Skol!Word fame for those in Storvik's hall

For our late, lamented lord, Baron Badouin, and his inconsolable lady Baroness Griele – Skol! for the good works they did for Storvik.

For our new Baron and Baroness, Celric and Ilaria. May they lead us to glory and honor!

For our outgoing seneschal, Lady Rayhana bint Yousef. After years of keeping the business of the barony in order, she must retire to see to her own lands.

For our incoming seneschal, Mistress Graciela Esperanza de Sevilla, stepping forward to accept the responsibility.

For Angeline and Katelin, who have volunteered to become our new Knight Marshal and her Deputy; for Rose, who will be stepping up as baronial herald; and for Astrid, who is beginning the process of becoming our Minister of Minors. Many thanks to new volunteers!

So many are the great deeds of Storvik that this report got lost, buried under the others. In June, at Highland River Melees, our Rapier Correspondent Lady Tibbie reported:

I want to thank those current, former, and honorary Storviki who assisted at Highland River Melees. Our former Baroness Janina worked at Troll; our former BaronRorik was parking steward; Lady Kunigunde worked at the MoL table, as she has done for this event for many years; our incoming Baron and Baroness, Lord Celric and Lady Ilaria, made food for the Queen's and Princess's Tea with the rapier fighters; Master Alessandro served as the Rapier Marshal in Charge, with assistance from Marshals in Training Lady Nyvein and Lord Ffernfael (our Baronial Rapier Champion); and I understand that Lord Carlyle and Lord Cameron marshaled armored combat and combat archery, respectively. Vivant our Storviki who are always ready to serve our neighbors.

Further reports came in, crediting Cameron with assistance throughout the set-up and teardown process, and telling how Lady Angeline Falconis organized a Royal Tea for the Queen and Princess.

Baroness Emma painted new silk banners for the barony, a parasol for her Excellency Ilaria, and a Spike banner as a prize for the newcomer's raffle. Tala al-Zahra created beautiful illuminated cards to the winners of the archery contests at Investiture, and Lady Grazia Morgano volunteered to do the calligraphy on-site. Lord Richard Wyn instigated the all-day bardic, like he does, and many came to make music. (Alas I was not there to name names.)

Master William the Younger will be making a donation to Iron Key.

Our barony's officers continue to serve with energy and enthusiasm: Quartermaster John West hosting armoring sessions; Chatelaine Sonya Flicker hosting fun nights out for the newcomers; Lady Grazia Morgano who isn't listed as our Archery Marshal but is holding the Sunday afternoon shoots anyway; Exchequer Douglas Morton bringing meticulous, professional attention to our books and procedures; Webminister Carlyle Jameson improvingthe web site as we move towards an ever more mobile world; Minister of A&S Meisterin Johanna arranging classes and providing hands-on help; and your humble Chronicler thinks the Drekkar is looking pretty spiffy these days. I don't always call out the baronial officers – service is our job – but a Skol! every so often won't hurt.

For all these gentles – Skol!

Court Reports from Storvik Investiture and Novice Tournament, July 9, 2016

Royal Courts

Morning Court

Greetings unto all to whom these presents come from Lady Patricia of Trakai!

At the recent Novice Tourney held in the mighty Barony of Storvik, I was honored to be the herald for three Courts presided over by Their Royal Majesties of Atlantia, King Dietrich and Queen Thora. I shall write three separate missives, one for each of these Courts. Pray you heed this.

Their Majesties opened Morning Court with some distressing news. Baron Badouin MacKenzie of Balfour approached Their thrones with the news that he had been mortally wounded in combat, but the Valkyries had granted him one last visit to the land of Storvik before taking him to Valhalla. His Excellency took his worldly riches of amber and glass-bead necklaces off from around his neck and presented them to his tearful lady, Baroness Griele vanden Burgh, so that she would have the resources to continue in this world. Since he would no longer need it, Baron Badouin presented his coronet to Their Majesties for safekeeping until They could find someone suitable to administer Their Storvik land.

A flock of white-robed, golden-belted Valkyries -- bearing a distinct resemblance to many of the Storvik Barons and Baronesses of the distant past -- swooped in with their spears to usher Duke Badouin, no longer Baron, off to their realm.

Overwhelmed by her grief, Baroness Griele told Their Majesties that she could not rule over Storvik without the love of her life. She too presented her coronet to the King and Queen and left Court to tend to her home and livestock.

Their Majesties declared that They could not leave Their venerable Barony of Storvik withoutsuitable representatives of Their leadership. They called forth Lord Celric d'Ravelle and Lady Ilaria de Gandia and asked them to serve as Their representatives to Storvik. Before Lord Celric and Lady Ilaria could accept, Viscount Cian Conor McQuaid stepped forward to take back his belt of fealty from Lord Celric until such time as his service as Territorial Baron ends.

Lord Celric and Lady Ilaria then took oaths upon the Royal sword and Their Majesties greeted them as the new Baron and Baroness of Storvik. Baron Celric and Baroness Ilaria took their seats. The King and Queen then closed Their Court by entreating the populace to enjoy the day's many planned activities.

I attest that this is a true record of the proceedings.

Respectfully submitted,

Lady Patricia of Trakai, Pursuivant

(Postscript: In real life, Badouin and Griele are alive and healthy and enjoying their retirement.)

Afternoon Court

At the recent Novice Tourney held in the mighty Barony of Storvik, I was honored to be the herald for three Courts presided over by Their Royal Majesties of Atlantia, King Dietrich and Queen Thora, Here is the second of three separate missives, one for each of these Courts. Pray you take heed.

In the middle of the afternoon, Queen Thora was minded to take a rest under the Royal pavilion and wished to hear some sweet music. Her Royal Majesty requested that Baron Watkyn of Kent perform for her. His Excellency played his mandolin and sang two beautiful songs for Her.

Our Queen was so impressed by his performance, and by the generosity of spirit and graciousness that he brings to the Kingdom, that Her Majesty opened a court and bestowed upon Baron Watkyn the Queen's Order of Courtesy. His Excellency reacted with suitable modesty and courtesy.

This is a true account of Her Majesty's Court.

Respectfully submitted,

Evening Court

Greetings unto all to whom these presents come from Lady Patricia of Trakai!

At the recent Novice Tourney held in the mighty Barony of Storvik, I was honored to be the herald for three Courts presided over by Their Royal Majesties of Atlantia, King Dietrich and Queen Thora, Here is the third and final of the missives recounting the business that took place during Their Courts. Pray you take heed.

As the shadows grew long, Their Majesties assembled Their populace in a shady spot so thatall might witness the business of Their evening Court.

After greeting the assemblage, Their Majesties requested the presence of Lady Griele vanden Burgh, who with her husband had relinquished the Coronets of Storvik in the morning. Their Majesties thanked her for her service over the past three years and made her a Baroness of Their Court with a Grant of Arms.

Next the King and Queen greeted the children of Atlantia and asked them how they liked theevent. Their Majesties asked Cadwalader ap Ieuan to bring out the traditional toy box, but warned him that the children would chase after him. They gave Cadwalader a head start andhe took off like a fiery arrow, with the children running after him at an equal pace.

Lady Margaret Lad was called forth and presented with the Opal for her service. Duchess Simone made several announcements to the populace.

Lord Cosimo of Venice and Baroness Cellach Mor were called before Their Majesties. Lord Cosimo was inducted into the Order of the Opal, and Her Excellency wanted to thank him forall the service that led to his induction into the Order.

Next to be called forward was Lord Duncan the Elder, who, for all his decades of service, wasentered into the Order of the Golden Dolphin by Their Majesties.

The King and Queen then called up those gentles who were attending their first event and spoke great words of encouragement to them. Duchess Kalisa Aleksandrovna asked for and

was granted a moment to address the populace about the special Pennsic University track for newcomers that is being offered from the middle Saturday through Wednesday of War Week.

Their Majesties then did request the presence in their Court of Lord Colin McNab, whom They inducted into the Order of the Coral Branch.

Leifr Skraveifr was brought before the King and Queen and presented with the Sea Dragon and thus raised to the Atlantian nobility. Baron Drogo Rainulf de Dragonera was subsequently inducted into the Order of the Sea Dragon for his efforts on the rapier field.

Cadwalader ap Ieuan, who by then had recovered from the onslaught of the Atlantian children, did respond to another summons from Their Majesties to step forward, and he received the Silver Osprey for his fighting and was thus raised to the Atlantian nobility.

Lord Alexander of Ayr was called to appear before the King and Queen and received the Queen's Order of Courtesy.

Eadyth Woderose was called into Their Majesties' presence and given her Award of Arms so that she might be numbered among the Atlantian nobility.

Baroness Avice Claremond of Lochmere responded to Their Majesties' summons and received the Fountain.

Baroness Adina, our Kingdom Chronicler, appeared before the Court of Their Majesties to tellthe populace about the Atlantian nominees for the Blackfox Awards, which recognize publication excellence at the Society level.

Their Majesties then allowed Their Excellencies of Storvik to hold court before the end of theRoyal Court.

If I have made any errors, please tell me at once so that I may make the necessary corrections.

Respectfully submitted,

Lady Patricia of Trakai, Pursuivant

The Last Court of Baron Badouin and Baroness Griele

To their Majesties, Highnesses, Excellency?s of Storvik and Good Gentles of Atlantia I send you greetings.

Please allow me a few minutes of your time to tell you of the past weekend and the wondrous moments I witnessed while visiting my friends in your Storvikian lands.

On the Morning of July 9th, I arrived to the beautiful lands on this hot day to find the dear Baroness Griele sitting upon her throne alone and in despair. Moments later their Majesties and Highness arrived whilst touring the lands looking for new fighters, archers and artisans to bring among their ranks, it was then that I learned of the reason for her sorrow and the missing Baron. For it was told by a Seer that his Excellency Badouin would die soon and he wished to ensure his place in Valhalla so he took up his armor and went on a quest to find a battle to die in. This definitely explained her Excellencies despair and grief. A short time

9

Page 10: The Drekkar - storvik.atlantia.sca.org Drekkar Newsletter ... other skits. They claim to be the first group to use a pirate ship as a camp gate; now there are

later Baron Badouin staggered into the court, he looked battle weary and as if he would die any moment. It was then then he told us of a strange tale. He said that he did go out on a quest traveling far and wide to find someone strong enough and skilled enough to kill him and it wasn't until this very morning that he came upon a one-eyed stranger at a crossroads. What was stranger was that the one-eyed man said he was told by two ravens of his search and many battles and that the Baron was worthy to face him. The two men fought and the one-eyed man did indeed the death blow but before his blood could be spill upon the soil he was pulled up and told he stillhad business to finish that morning before theValkyries would come to takehim to feast in the evening. The next thing His Excellency knewhe was before the field of the court. It was at this time he and his lovely wife conducted thelast of their business together on this plain.

First to be called before them was Lady Rayhana al-Sayyida bint Yusuf, unfortunately she was tending to her own lands and unable to be there, but His Excellency wished to let all know of his respect for her hard work, that she brought a kingdom level event back to their lands and has done much for the Barony. For this she was awarded the Baronial of Excellence in absentia.

Next to be called forward was Mistress Gracia Esperanza de Sevilla, sadly she too could not hear the call for she was in foreign lands, Baroness Griele however wished for all that were present to know how much help Mistress Grazia had been throughout her time on the throne and of the joy and courtesy she had shown so she awarded her the Baroness' Award of Courtesy and asked that shout of Skol be loud enough that she may hear it in the distant land. For it was so great it nearly knocked me aback.

At this time His Excellency searched high and low until his eyes settled upon M'lady Sonya Flicker and he bid her come forward, he wished to thank her for being his Chatelaine and caring for the newcomers to their lands, teaching them to laugh and dance and opening her home to all by awarding her the Baronial Award of Excellence.

Her Excellency then bid I call forward Baroness Emma West before her, so that she may thank the Baroness for her kindness to the lands and herthroughout her time upon the throne; her service to the barony, whether itbe teaching, her gracious hospitality or organizing wonderful events including today for the novices of the land, for this she wished to bestow upon her the Baroness' Award of Courtesy.

At this time we noticed his Excellency become very unsteady and saw that his wound had begun to bleed and all knew his time was coming to an end. He handed his sword to his rapier champion, Lord Fernfell to keep safe, and relinquished his coronet to their Majesties. Next he removed his cloak and laid it upon the throne so that it may light the way for all to follow, lastly as a host of his ancestors entered the hall, he gave his wealth and love to his wife and was awarded a spear by the Valkyrie and led to Valhalla and his just death.

Baroness Griele at this wished to no longer carry on leading the lands alone and asked to beallowed to return to their estates. His Majesty personally led her to her escort and solace.

Upon his return, Their Majesties determined with a war upon the horizon itwas necessary to find a new Baron and Baroness to guard and guide the barony. I shall leave the story of thatto another.

Please stay tuned as I share the tale of my evening in the Courts of the great lands of Storvik.

First Court of Baron Celric and Baroness Ilaria

To their Majesties, Highnesses, Excellencies of Storvik and Good Gentles of Atlantia I send you second greetings,

Please allow me to continue to share my witness of the evening court at Storvik's Novice Tourney.

I shall defer to Lady Patricia to tell of the happenings in their Majesties court for the heat and I were no longer friends and will endeavor to tell of what happened when the new Baron and Baroness Celric and Ilaria opened their first court.

The tourneys ended and all were ready to relax so under the blessed shade of the trees their Majesties allowed their Excellencyies to hold their first court. A welcome was bestowed to all and a thank you for all that aided to break the attendance record of the day with over 300 souls on the land.

First their Excellencies asked for the officers present to attend them and asked if they were willing to continue in their respective roles. All agreed and were told they would be well supported by their Excellencies.

Next a raffle was held for all newcomers in which a beautiful hand painted silk pennant of Spike was created by Baroness Emma which was given won by an adorable little girl and to the chatelaine who gave the winning raffle ticket, Mistress Mary Isabel of Heatherstone, wasawarded a bounty of chocolates in which she happily shared.

The autocrats of the day, Baron Henry West and Baroness Emma West, joined the court to make the proclamations and announce the winners of the day's activities. They were joined by M'lady Tala al-Zahra who announced the winners of the archery competition.

Their Excellencies then called into the court the champions of the prior Baronage. For in her grief Baroness Griele sent word that she and Baron Badouin would wish they be released of their service to the Barony if they were to step down. All were released but Their Excellencies asked that Lord Ffernfael Kymro stay on as the Storvik Rapier champion. Also called into court was M'lady Tala al-Zahra and she was asked to step into the role of archery champion which she gladly accepted. Baron Celric then announced to the populace that there would be an announcement made in a special editionof Drekkar prior to War of the other Baronial champions.

The Shire of Roxbury Mill asked for a moment of their Excellencies' time and when we saw that the envoy sent consisted of cherubic little ones and their one adult it was nigh impossible to resist their entering the court bearing gifts to stave off any future raids. The gifts consisted of golden edible coins and a kneeling cushion with the Baronial arms embroidered upon it that was even reversible for future enemies to lay their heads.

At this time Her Excellency Emma West asked for a boon of the courts toannounce a couple missed winners including the newcomer's arts and sciences competition which were a mother and daughter who brought a very tasty andlovely cake to their very first event, thengifted it to head table for feast.

Her Excellency Ilaria then took a moment to address the populace. She asked that all look upon her and notice that she did not wear any beads upon herself. She has done so on purpose and asked of the people of Storvik help rectify this matter. For she shall add a bead for each award recommendation sent to them. It is this humble scribes opinion that with thehardworking, skilled and talented people of this land she shall have many heavy strandsto wear in the years to come.

Here in ended the first court of Baron Celric and Baroness Ilaria of Storvik. May my words be as accurate and true as the winds in their sails.

In humble service,Baronin Daniela Schwartzhaupt
