LettersDear Editor, I would like to pay tribute to the men and women of our community services in this town. Last Thursday night, 13th November, sadly there was a house fire in Charlotte Street. The Fire Brigade, Police, Ambulance and Essential Energy Workmen were in at-tendance within minutes of my call to triple 0. Although there was no hope of saving the home, the efficiency they all worked with was just amazing to watch. Thanks to the firemen and my wonderful family friend, Bill Watson. My home, as far as I can ascertain, wasn’t affected. Fires are terrifying and take over so quickly, we should all be very aware and have a plan ready just in case. I would like to thank all these wonderful people, we can be very proud of our services and the men and women who serve in them. We often say things about the disadvan-tages of living in a small country town but for me the advantages far outweigh them by a country mile. The care and concern shown to me by many people this past week has been overwhelming. Thank you all.

Kind regards,Mary Finn

Hi Editor, We are currently 3 hours East of Perth at our son Geoffrey’s place. On Thursday we start heading Eastwards towards home, 4000 plus kms. The first part is 300 kms of red dirt road towards Norseman but road is good. Then across the Nullabour into SA over to Broken Hill, Dubbo and home in 2 to 3 weeks. The Victoria River in NT is a croc hangout. We got some pics of young dingos around our campsite and we spent a week on the beach when we reached the Northern WA coast. Heading Eastward now!

Regards,Alan and Debbie

IMAGE: Pete Davis says save a horse ride some fitness equipment!

Gigantic Addition To Fitness PathThe concept for the Fitness Path formed four and a half years ago when Community Health staff decided they wanted to establish an easily accessible (and most importantly free) outdoor gym and walking/cycling path. The Oval was elected as the best choice due to the large amount of unused space. After lots of community consultation to establish sup-port, a working party was formed. That party included Rob and Margaret Morris, Julie Mid-dleton, David Francis, Graham Rice, Tracy Lamb, Cath Balcombe, Lorrae Barker, Bron Newman and Lana Brown. The party spent the next few years fundraising and applying for grants to purchase the equipment. Sally Bourne, a renowned local landscaper, drew up the plans for the exercise sites. She de-cided to make each site into a body part in-cluding a heart, liver, kidney and lungs which would draw interest and help with grant ap-plications, plus ballooning enthusiasts will get a fantastic bird’s eye view!

Now, the Fitness Path is well on its way to completion, thanks to the volunteers that helped with the installation earlier this month. The equipment up and running in-cludes a Royal rowing machine, Royal leg pusher and chin up bars, with each body-part site having equipment for cardio and upper and lower body workouts. “We need to edge and mulch the exercise sites so there’s still work to be done” says Julie Middleton. Ar-guably the most exciting new development is a huge piece of equipment still to come, named the “King Kong”. “This is the only one in the entire Southern Hemisphere, we will be known as the ‘Town with the King Kong!’” says Julie. We won’t ruin the surprise, how-ever this jumbo apparatus will definitely help you get in touch with your inner gorilla. Let’s just hope you don’t go on a rampage and climb to the top of the Trading Post af-terwards!

Local House Wins National Design

Award! If you wander along Suttor Street in Canow-indra you’ll spot a special residence that’s an architect’s wildest dream. The idea be-gan when Ros Finn asked if Mary and John Newman would like to sub-divide her block on Suttor Street, back in 2008. The couple jumped at the chance as the block contains an early twentieth century stable and coach house that the Newmans decided to restore. Mary, who has Welsh origins, was inspired by the rustic brick houses of her time living in Glamorganshire, Wales. “I loved the old fashioned farm house we lived in” says Mary, “We’re fond of restoring and using heritage buildings so we wanted to blend the stable and coach house with a new modern home.” They enlisted the help of their son-in-law, Brent Reid, an architectural designer who owns EcoSphere Design. He created a home that has all the mod cons of modern living but still retains the character of old dwellings. The house is all on a single level, with wide doorways, making it wheelchair friendly. The garden, which was designed by local landscaper Sally Bourne, is beautifully unique. Full of native plants, there are also bird sculptures, a Japanese section and a Ti-betan prayer wheel plus a piece of slate with a daffodil emblazoned on it, another token of Wales. Dubbed the “Newman House” project by EcoSphere Design, the house recently won the National Design Award at the 2014 BDA National Design Awards under the cat-egory, “new residential buildings up to 250 sqm and under $2000/sqm.” Prior to that, it won the “Sustainable House”, “New House” and “Heritage/Adaptive Re-Use” categories in the BDA NSW 2013 Sydney Branch Awards. Mary and John are pleased with the recogni-tion the house is receiving, “It’s a blending of the centuries” says John, “we love it.”

Canowindra Christmas Day LuncheonA friendly reminder that there are only five weeks to go until Christmas! The festive sea-son is a time of celebration, family, friends and belonging. It’s a busy time, with friends and family travelling to share their time with others. But when those close to us are far away, it can also be a lonely time of year. The ‘2014 Canowindra Christmas Day Luncheon’ is sponsored by local community organisations and businesses. It provides an opportunity for people to come together and share a meal among friends. The luncheon will be held at the Canowindra Bowling Club in Ryall Street, which offers a great venue

with disability access. Bookings are essen-tial and can be made at Toby’s Butchery, St. Vincent de Paul, Canowindra Food Basket and Canowindra Health Centre. ‘Thank You’ to each of these facilities for providing this support. We are in need of other members of the community to join us in ‘lending a hand’ on the day or throughout the preparations leading up to Christmas. If you are interest-ed in volunteering or would like further infor-mation please contact Lyn on 0409867002 or Marion on 6344 1716. Big Plans For Riverbank GalleryDeborah Flannery is the new owner of the Riverbank Gallery on Gaskill Street, and she’s bringing some great ideas to the table. The sign outside, created by the Canowindra Men’s Shed, says in bright green and pink chalk that the café is open for coffee from 6am, making it the earliest opening café in Canowindra. The café includes a grassy seating area surrounding by flower beds and shaded by red umbrellas. “I’ve also got a juice bar in the pipe line which will feature all local produce” says Deb excitedly. Inside, the Gallery is decorated with new stock in-cluding handmade shell and coral jewellery by Jennifer Brocks, pewter cutlery made by

Wolfgang with Australian touches like a koa-la-topped sugar spoon and 100% Aussie silk clothing from the Peacock range, “we will be the only dealer of this particular silk range in the entire Central West,” says Deb. On top of these new additions will be artworks from Bobbi Angelini and Kay Gorringe adorning the walls. “I’d like to get the schools involved with creating art, get aged care involved…maybe even pets! I want to make art fun, ap-proachable and local, this Gallery is going to be all about Canowindra.” The Gallery is due to open in the New Year.

Highly Commended For Cargo Store

Makaela Bowman was one of the talented staff members nominated as Employee of the Year at the Daroo Business Awards ear-lier this month. Makaela, who works at the Cargo Store, says it was a lovely surprise to receive a Highly Commended certificate at the ceremony. “There’s a lot of goodwill and support within these communities who like to help people who try their hardest,” she says “I’m very grateful to Cath (owner) for letting me work here during my gap year, it’s a won-derful, supportive environment.” Makaela is off to Sydney University next year to study psychology. Another nominee was Danielle Jenkins who works at Adloyalty. “Caddie and Robyn nominated me and it was really nice to be recognised for my hard work” says Dani. “I’ve been working at Adloyalty for two years and I love it.” We wish all the nominees in-cluding the winner of the award Blake Wilson all the best in their futures in business.

Personal Training With Ron LakeLast Friday Ron Lake put me through my pac-es at The Oval. Ron, who is a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer, has been providing Canowindra residents with fit-ness sessions since he qualified earlier this year. He first moved here three years ago after deciding he wanted somewhere with quiet roads and a peaceful lifestyle. An avid cyclist, he is keen to renew his license with Cycling Australia to race again next year. “I’ve been cycling since I was 15 so that’s my main passion, although I’ve always been interest-ed in diet and fitness” says Ron. When he’s not pedalling, Ron invests some of his time teaching multiplications and subtractions as a math tutor. “Health and a good education are the two greatest assets that anyone can have” he says. Ron’s enthusiasm shines through when he is training, which encourages you to try your best. A recent success story was a local mother and daughter team who lost 11 kilos

between them in only 8 sessions. Another lady who has been going to sessions has a very pleased doctor at her progress so far. “The endorphins give you a kick, a natural high that makes you feel invincible. After a while you begin to look forward to sessions which become easier as you become strong-er” Ron says. The personal training sessions include one-on-one coaching, healthy eating recommendations and tailored exercise rou-tines depending on what the person’s goals are. “I ask them what they want to achieve, usually it’s toning up, losing weight or just getting healthy. Then they write a food diary so I am able to make suggestions when nec-essary as to what they might like to change.” Ron has full confidence in his method to helping you achieve a better body. With the right diet and a program of exercise there are no negatives” he says, “it’s a win, win, win situation!”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…The countdown to Christmas is officially on, and if you haven’t started decorating already don’t despair as there are many quick and ef-fective ways to get your home into the spirit of Christmas. One of the things I love the most is find-ing some rustic tree branches, spraying them with white paint, adding simple bows to the branches in different colours and placing in a tall vase on the table as your centerpiece. You could also use baubles as an alterna-tive to ribbons or why not use both! Try and choose a colour scheme that tones with your dining room.

Another idea is to entwine sprigs of fresh pine, holly and some small twigs that have been sprayed white with fine wire. Tie a rib-bon around the wire so it’s hidden and tie it around your table napkins, adding a special touch to a Christmas dining table. Those of you that own a mantel piece have every opportunity to have garlands of fresh flowers adorning your home for Christmas. This idea can also be used along the centre of a table. Now this takes some work, but the end result is well worth it. Once again you need to spray some small twigs in white and gather lots of fresh pine and any other green foliage. Try and use foliage that doesn’t fall apart too easily or you could use gum leaves and gum nuts to add that creative Australian touch. Start wiring them together in lots of small bouquets. You will need a piece of thick cord measuring the width of your mantel piece plus 80cm for the sides. With fine wire it’s best to start attaching the small bouquets to the thick cord, making sure you overlap each bouquet, as you do not want to see the cord. I find tying one end of the cord to a chair and the other end to another chair helps as it makes the cord taut. It’s a good idea to make this garland 1 or 2 days before Christmas Day so it still looks fresh when you unveil it. When the day ar-rives you can poke some fresh flowers or wrap some fairy lights through the garland to give it an extra special touch. To be extra festive, other items you can use include cin-namon sticks, dried orange slices and silver ribbons. There will be more Christmas decorative tips in next month’s Phoenix.

Be A Cool Customer This Christmas…

Want to cool down this summer? Then the Daikin Split System is one of the best prod-ucts on the market. It is approved by the Na-tional Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program and has many features and benefits. The system reduces humidity in the room, while maintaining the temperature as much as possible, and sound levels are able to be monitored when in a room. Some of the features include the new inverter DC Mo-tor which shortens the system start up time, enabling the room temperatures to be reached quicker and constantly maintained, minimising temperature fluctuations and providing greater efficiency. Essential in to-day’s world is the ability to reduce the peak power consumption and reduce energy con-sumption when not in use. It also is able to provide a ‘draught free’ room and offer night quiet mode and quiet indoor operation. One of the benefits of the system is its ability to self-diagnose a problem, with malfunction codes displayed on the liquid crystal panel of the remote control for fast and easy fault diagnosis. Kilby’s have stocked this brand of heating and cooling systems for many years and can easily come out and give you a quote to get this in prior to Xmas. After all, no one wants to be sweating over Christmas dinner! We all have plans for Xmas and one of those is always to have photos of the children to

give to our ever supportive grandparents. In addition, we always have prints or something that we want framed, as that extra special Xmas present. Craig Peters, from Canow-indra Picture Framing said,” I have a large range of framing available, from normal framed prints, boxed frames, silhouettes to enhance artwork, mirrors, canvasses, and anything made to measure.” “There is still time to come in and see me and I will be able to assist you get this done in time for Xmas. There is nothing nicer than to receive something which is personalised and has a lot of thought and care going into the finished product.’ As some of Craig’s cus-tomers say, “you won’t be disappointed!” S & S, known better as Sam and Steve are the go to boys when you need renova-tions, improvements or building some rooms on. They are both local boys and just seem to get on with the job, as one satisfied customer commented. Wheth-er it be a new bath-room, a new deck or just something small, you will be assured of a great job by Sam and Steve, the S & S team.

RURAL ROUNDUPCatching Up With Richard Kinsela…

Richard Kinsela, from Kinsela Farm Supplies CRT in Canowindra, reflects on this year’s harvest. “At the moment the farmers are well into harvest, with wheat starting to come in at Eugowra and Canow-indra in a week or so. There are some farmers still harvesting can-ola, although most will probably finish this week”. Crops of canola have been hitting .8 or .9 to the acre, a very good yield for the year. At the moment, a lot of the farmers are purchasing grain protection packs –this protects the grain when it goes into storage and ensures that weevils and other nasties don’t get into it. An essential product if you are planning on storing your grain until later in 2015. Richard continued, and said, “we are the agents for Bushmann’s tanks, and we have sold around 4 in the last couple of weeks, as people plan ahead to ensure that they have an adequate water sup-ply. We also stock a range of calpeda pumps for household, domes-tic and for farm use.” Get down to Kinsela Farm Supplies for all your general hardware needs and stockfeed for horses and chickens.

IMAGE: Suzie and her Mum Margaret, who celebrated her 88th birthday on Tuesday with dogs Brewster and Tess

A New Beginning For A Brave LadySuzie Crosbie has been through hell and high water over the past year. A chef and professional nanny by trade, Suzie was left homeless after the infamous Blue Mountain bushfires raged through her neighbourhood in Blackheath last October. Suzie had literally minutes to escape before her house was en-gulfed. “It was a vortex of fire, I was in the fire truck with the sprinklers on which saved our lives. Everything happened so fast.” Luck-ily her Mum also got out with her husband though tragically her cats, geese, ducks and chickens perished, despite Suzie’s best ef-forts to save them. After her husband decid-ed to abandon them and not wanting to leave her 88 year old mum to work full time, Suzie was at a loss at what to do next. “Dot (Cain) rang me up and said ‘what the %$#@ are you going to do with your life!’” she laughs “I told her I’d always wanted to own a B&B and the next minute it was organised.” Suzie had visited Canowindra on and off for around

six years, but had not seen herself living here. “If someone had told me a year ago that my whole life would change and I’d be living in Canowindra I’d have told them they were mad.” Suzie has been amazed at the kindness her and her mum have received, “people just kept on giving, I had 19 tooth-brushes at one stage.” She has emerged from the flames a stronger woman and after six months of living in Canowindra, Gran-tham House is up and running as a B&B at 33 Rodd Street. “I want people to treat it like home, spoil themselves!” Suzie’s son, Harry, currently lives in South Korea as a teacher and hasn’t seen the new house yet, though he will be home for Christmas. “After living through trauma you learn that people have to accept you for who you are” says Suzie. We hope you enjoy this new chapter of your life in Canowindra.

In The Running For A Cure

Alison Stephens is gearing up to run 250km over 6 days this June. The race, which will take place in the heart of the Australian Out-back the Simpson Desert, is known as the Big Red Run and Alison is running it for a big reason. This year Alison’s nephew was diag-nosed with Type 1 Diabetes and she is aware of families in the Central West having happy, healthy children one day and a life long ill-ness the next with very little warning. She is no stranger to running, competing in the Big Coast Run in October at Botany Bay and win-ning the 30k race in an amazing time of 2 hours 37 minutes. “From those events, I am now embarking on a run with a purpose, not of winning but of finishing and experiencing what it is like to not be living life in my com-fort zone. I am sure my expectations will be blown away” says Alison. She hopes to raise $3000 for the cause. Alison has paid for the event herself and believes that commitment to training and the pain she’ll endure is noth-ing compared to the inconvenience of being diagnosed with a lifelong illness. Alison says “I first came across the Big Red Run in early 2014 when I had a desire to run in the Aus-tralian outback but was put off at the thought of raising for a cause I had no connection with. After Lachie (nephew) was diagnosed, my husband said to me casually ‘I guess the run is back on’ I knew instantly I had his sup-port.” If you are a local family and believe in this great cause or have a family member living with Type 1 Diabetes, please contact Alison to show your support and she can think of you along the way on 0408876930 or email [email protected]. Dona-tions can be made at - https://bigredrun.everydayhero.com/au/alison We wish Alison the best of luck.

Imperial Hotel Lives Up To Its NameThe Imperial, or “Impy” as its better known, has been given a major makeover. “The Jeffs family, who I took over from, have made the venue look very nicely presented” says Da-vid Oliver, Manager. “It’s a family friendly pub, a great place for Christmas functions.” The new food options now include 2 menus, a bistro, gourmet menu for something a bit special and a pub classics menu that was re-leased for summer but will be staying follow-ing its success. David and the team have tried to change the vibe of the beer garden by adding antique furniture and encouraging people to use the space, “we want them to relax” says David. In

his past work life David was a Sports Admin-istrator and had a big passion for rugby. He became more involved in hospitality in the summer and took over the running of the Im-perial in July. “It’s been great, I’m definitely glad I took it on. It’s good to be able to come to my home town for my official venture and the supports been fantastic.” David will still be able to enjoy sports though as The Impy is the major sponsor for the local rugby un-ion team, the Eagles. The staff at the Impe-rial are encouraging everyone to give them a call to get Christmas bookings in before reservations run out on 6341 2588.

A special con-gratulations to Ron and Sandy on making it to the final. On Sat the other semi-final saw Ron & Sandy def V Mirto & J Middleton 33-31 in a tight game. Women’s BowlsA most enjoyable day was had by all at Tenpin Bowls in Orange. Some didn’t play very well, but that didn’t matter at all. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch at Kelly’s Hotel afterwards. So much fun was had, it’s going to become an annual event!

At Pennant practice four bowls each were played, 2 to a long kitty and 2 bowls to a shirt kitty. 12 players took part; Diane Slattery, Nancy Morrow, Shirley Robson, Dianne Moon-ey, Colleen Crump, Libby Balcombe, Ellen Petty, Radka Tatterson, Betty Jenkins, Jenny Middleton, Jean Roth and Karen Cox.There was one game of social pairs played Bobbie Turner & Heather Hoad against Moyna Rue, Margaret Gosper and Maureen Baillie. Two teams competed in the Young Cherry Festival Triples on 18th & 19th November. See you on the green next week when a sponsored triples game will be played.

Swimming ClubThe pool was the coldest place to be on Friday afternoon with over 60 swimmers lined up for the 25m freestyle. The Cleary family were the stand out improvers as dad Ben smashed his

PB by 8 seconds, mum Kristy obliterated her by 7 seconds while son Oscar improved his PB by 5 seconds. The Spoon semis and final will return next week. Four lanes of eleven swimmers lined up for the relay and came down to a fingernail as lane five edged out lane four by 0.2 second. Taking home the winners pennants were Ben Cleary, his first swimming prize ever, Finlay Rowston, Regan Hughes, Claire Wright, Josie Mitchell, Marshall McKay, Eliza Mitchell, Damon McKay, Mia Earsman, and Connor Munroe.

CricketCanowindra A Grade hosted Morongla for the John Guthrie Cup. Cano won the toss and elected to bat, opening with Ben Schaefer and Brendan Traves. They got Canowindra off to a great start with an opening partnership of 86 before Brendan was dismissed for 30 in the 10th over. Matt Harrison continued with Ben Schaefer until he fell with 83. Jac Devlin and left hand batsman Matt Harrison put on 14 runs in 3 overs with Canowindra going to drinks after the 20th 3-147 . Together Jac Devlin and Matt steadied the side with 40 more runs. Pat Ken-nedy, Jj, N Traves, Tim Star and Nick Daily con-tinued with Canowindra posting a final score of 240. It was then Morongla’s turn to bat, and Canowindra’s Brendan Traves got the first break. Nick Traves was next to strike with the ball in the 7th over, followed by Ben Schaefer in the 12th over. Connor Crook and Sam Mc-Naught put together a strong partnership of 84 runs in just 8 overs and put Morongla in a good position to win 3-170 at drinks after 20 overs. After drinks, Canowindra’s leggy G. Singh got the big wicket of S. McNaught 84 and then Connor Crook 76. Canowindra put the pressure on Morongla which saw a massive collapse losing their last 6 wickets for just 25 runs, bowled out for 236 giving the win to Canowindra with just 4 runs . Ben Schaefer was man of the match, and the result puts Canowindra top of the ladder.
