GOLD TRAILS SHOWCASE OUR RICH HISTORY A new website, www.goldtrails.com.au is to be launched featuring NSW’s gold rush history and promoting historical attractions of the region. Aimed at both locals and visitors to our region, the Gold Trails website will be formally launched by Katrina Hodgkinson, the Minister for Primary Industries and Minister for Small Business, at the Lambing Flat Festival, a Gold Trails event, in Young at 9am on Saturday 9 March. The launch will be followed by the unveiling of interpretive signage at significant nearby Gold Trails sites in Young, Murrumburrah and Binalong. Gold Trails links 17 local government areas and two National Parks and Wildlife Service sites located in the Lachlan Fold Belt, the main geographical region for gold discovery in NSW. It stretches from Hill End in the north to Kiandra in the south; Yass in the east to Forbes and West Wyalong out west. Cabonne Country features prominently in the website. The importance of the Ophir region as the first discovered field in 1851 is well documented. So to is the legendary story of Frank Gardener’s Gold Escort robbery near Eugowra in 1862. Years in the making, the project came about through the formation of a regional forum, now incorporated as Gold Trails, whose aim is to engage local communities in promoting the gold rush history of the area. The development of this website was possible, thanks to the support from the NSW Government and its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, through the 2011/12 Regional Tourism Product Development Program.

To the editor... Please give me space in your paper to express my concern for the adult bike riders who ride along the Long's Corner Road. There are often three or four in a group, men or women. They ride three or four abreast and take up over two thirds of the road and do not hear the sound of a vehicle coming up behind them. This evening there were two groups, I had to pull onto the grass to get past the men, when i was near the ladies one pulled off onto the wrong side of the road where her bike became unbalanced. Had she fallen off she could have been hit by the car. This road is a 100KPH road, and has no centre line. My concern is that if these riders do not learn and obey the road rules for bicycles, there could be a very nasty accident. Thank you. Jamie Whiting, Burdett

To the editor... Well, once again, I’m not surprised. I really think Cabonne Council have reached an all time record of doing half a job. With the road works to the tip, they missed the bit that matters between Wenz and Leneva Lanes. A while ago they put in new kerb associated with the new Country Link bus stop, now they’re stretching it to the intersection. Wouldn’t it have been nice if they’d remove the old railway line, and replaced the kerb for the whole section of that part of the street to start with. And then, after tinkering with the road outside the Age of Fishes museum, they get a contractor to reseal the shopping section of Gaskill Street, but miss out the busiest and worst intersection. I guess someone will eventually notice the poor condition of the rest of Gaskill St back to Ferguson St. Wouldn’t it have been nice when they knocked down the toilet block and put up a sign that toilets were at Morris Park if a map to direct visitors to where Morris Park was included. Is there any limit to how incompletely they can do a job? Does anyone at Council have the capacity to take a ‘big picture’ look? Stephen Tamplin, Canowindra

“The Gold Trails project and the resulting website is testament to the committee, and is just another example of regional cooperation in championing tourism in regional NSW”, explained Cabonne Tourism and Promotion Officer, Glenn Mickle. “The website is a key component of a much larger project, aimed at generating interest in the rich history of our area” said Mr Mickle. “Many of our villages are steeped in gold rush history and bushranger stories. We have wonderful locations, legends and people. The Gold Trails initiative is a great way to share these stories. “Over the next couple of months iPad kiosks will be installed in visitor infor-mation centres and attractions through-out the Gold Trails region. People will be able to use the iPad to access the Gold Trails website to plan their travel, download the interactive pdf, and learn more of our golden heritage. Some road-side billboards will be erected to promote awareness of the Gold Trails” explained Mr Mickle. The website provides people with a complete chronology of the gold mining story in central and southwest NSW from 1851 into the 20th Century. The chronology, drawn from newspaper articles and NSW Department of Mines reports, captures an extraordinary history of bushranging and the cultural tension associated with the presence of Chinese on the goldfields. Featuring evocative images of the different eras, the historical component of the website should become an excellent tool for school students and others look-ing to improve their knowledge of our region’s fascinating history. Every goldfield has its own trail – every goldmining family their own story. There’s nothing like being there to explore the different experiences on offer at each of the trails’ best-known gold centres. The website provides people with a com-plete picture of the various Gold Trails, with maps, historic information and de-tails of historic attractions in each town and village. An interactive pdf file can be downloaded for use as a portable field guide in areas with no internet coverage. The Gold Trails project will seek to attract future state or federal tourism funding to expand the project and cater for new members. The group is exploring funding opportunities in the commercial sector. Follow the Gold Trails and discover the heritage riches underpinning the towns, villages and landscapes of NSW.

A $15,000 LIFT FOR BALLOON CHALLENGE A hot air ballooning event expected to bring more than 13,000 people into Canowindra has received a $15,000 boost from Cabonne Council. The town will come alive in the last week of April when it hosts the Canowindra Challenge, featuring the 18th Australian Ballooning Championships. The event’s significance in bringing visitors into Cabonne Shire and publicising the region prompted the council to allocate a large slice of its events assistance program to its promotion and advertising. The money will be spent on television advertising, printed marketing materials, promotional activities, data collection, visitor statistics and logistics. Now in its fourth year, the Canowindra Challenge will bring the national ballooning championships to the town for just the second time from Saturday 20 to Saturday 27 April 2013. International balloonists and the best pilots in Australia will take part in a week of competition. As well as the premier ballooning event in the country, the Challenge will have an exciting program of support events including a balloon glow spectacular, wine and food evening, markets, photographic exhibitions and rugby match. Based on last year’s figures, organisers expect about 8,500 visitors from outside the Cabonne area and 4,500 from within the shire while as many as 300 caravans and motor homes are expected to stay in the town for up to eight days. The Canowindra Challenge is being promoted on television, radio and in print and social media, as well as through visitor information centres in NSW and Victoria.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Canowindra Balloon Challenge is calling for volunteers to become involved in this unique annual event being held from Saturday 20 to Saturday 27 April 2013. Volunteers will be required to assist as a part of target teams that measure the pilot’s marker drops, a person to remain at the hall whilst balloons are out flying, and other supporting roles especially at the Balloon Glow. Contributing to the event adds a whole new dimension to the enjoyment, as well as providing you with invaluable experi-ence. The younger generation would benefit from the experience, and would be particularly desirable for future employers. Become part of this event by calling please contact Arthur on 0408 416 034.

SCHOOLKIDS BONUS Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and students with the costs of primary and secondary school studies. If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could be eligible to receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and half paid in July. The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund (ETR) and is a much simpler system. You no longer need to collect receipts and payments are made automatically so you don’t have to wait months to make a claim via your tax return. Check your eligibility by visiting australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus and if you think you might have missed out on the January payment, contact Centrelink – either in person at a Centrelink-Medicare Office or by calling 132 468.

BAN LIFTED FOR 100 MILE DINNER An alcohol free zone at a Molong park will be suspended for one day for a major FOOD Week event. Cabonne Council will lift the ban on the town’s Village Green on Monday 15 April 2013 to enable it to host the 100 Mile Dinner – one of FOOD Week’s signature events. Previously held in Canowindra, the dinner is being held in Molong for the first time this year. The alcohol free zone prohibits people from bringing alcohol onto the village green or consuming it on the land. The fifth 100 Mile Dinner hosted by the FOOD Week Committee, the event celebrates regional produce and wine brought to diners by chefs, cooks and vignerons from the Cabonne area, Cowra, Mudgee, Orange and Young. Meanwhile, Cabonne Council has allocated $500 from its events assistance program to the Canowindra@home group for the inaugural 100 Mile Lunch at Canowindra on 14 April 2013. Another FOOD Week event showcasing the region’s seasonal produce and wine, the lunch will be held on the grounds of the Age of Fishes Museum and is expected to attract 200 guests.

SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS The Adult Survivors of Child Abuse - Cowra Support Group was formed early 2011 under the umbrella of the Cowra Neighbourhood Centre to assist survivors of any form of child abuse and their family and friends to find options to heal. The group does not seek to replace counselling nor is it about counselling. It provides information on existing resources: books, organisations, help-lines, websites, articles, strategies, peer support, workshops, and access to professional counselling. The group respects your privacy: there is no need to disclose your name, there is no need to tell your story. The group meets every month on the first Friday of each month. Each meeting is held in a safe environment in Cowra. Professional counselling staff will be available if needed – in a separate room, in all privacy. Each meeting is structured as follows: a welcome to new members, an update on items discussed at the previous meeting, an update on upcoming workshops and events focusing on healing, followed by sharing of resources and discussions on healing strategies. Informal chats, and tea/coffee breaks occurring at times of your choice whilst respecting the group. What if you are interested to join? It is better for you and for the smooth and safe running of the group meetings that you fully understand the group’s objectives and be introduced to some group members prior to attending for the first time. Contact Pascale on 02 6342 1612, have a chat, and assess whether this group is what you are looking for. You will also be given the opportunity to meet with one or more group members prior to attend-ing your first meeting. This will make your first attendance within our welcoming group, a safe and enriching experience.

Coalition launches Online Higher Education Working Group: Strengthening Australia’s higher education and research sectors is an essential part of the Coalition’s plan to build a more diverse, world class, 5-Pillar economy. International education is Australia’s fourth biggest export and our largest services export industry, making it a crucial part of our economy and society. The growth of online learning presents both an opportunity and challenge for higher education institutions and the economy more broadly. At the same time, we must be vigilant to protect our universities’ strong higher education record, international rankings and reputation. The Coalition is establishing an Online Higher Education Working Group to examine how Australian higher education institutions can capitalise on the potential of online learning without placing this major export earner at risk. The Working Group will examine the key issues and challenges related to the development of online higher education in Australia. While universities will continue to offer traditional higher education models, we need to be willing to embrace the opportunities of online learning. Submissions to the Working Group are invited from universities and other higher learning providers, academics, students, relevant organisations and the public with submissions closing on 30 March 2013. Local community services visits: was unable to attend the official opening of the FoodCare store in Glenroi recently, so I popped in for a visit last week. The store is located at the Glenroi Community Centre and is now open every Tuesday from 9:30am to 1:30pm. The attached photo shows what people can get for just $10. To access the service a Centrelink card/Pension Card/Veterans card is required. Today I had the pleasure of visiting the Bathurst Meals on Wheels. The Bathurst facility is one of the major Meals on Wheels operations in NSW, providing frozen meals for one third of the State, as well as meals for locals. In 2012 they produced 180,000 meals, and in the week leading up to Christmas they produced a massive 8,375 meals, which is certainly impressive. These community services are vital for many people especially at a time when the cost of living has increased significantly. Tractor drivers required for Camp Quality fundraiser: It’s not every day that tractors are chosen as the form of transport to get around the central west, however that’s what the 2013 Camp Quality Tractor trek is all about. This important fundraiser will see 30 odd tractors trek through the towns of Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney, Newbridge, Rockley, Oberon, Meadow Flat, Portland, Yetholme, Bathurst and then returning to Orange. The event is happening on September 19 to 21 and the call-out for tractor drivers is happening now. So if you’re interested in having a bit of fun while raising funds for this wonderful charity contact Graeme Eggleston on 0428 270 447 or visit www.mycampqaulity.org.au/tractortrek.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 4 March 2013 Farmers in the Dubbo electorate are set to benefit from new drought management measures introduced by the State Government. I am confident that these new drought measures will better assist farmers prepare for and subsequently manage the impacts of future drought events here. NSW has clearly taken the lead in this important challenge facing agricultural industries. It is the first State to implement changes to its drought assistance package following the release of the national drought policy framework in October last year. While farm businesses and rural communities are often very exposed to the full effects of seasonal conditions, drought policies in the past have not been particularly helpful in preparing farmers for the risks they face. Farmers previously had to wait for the trigger of their district being ‘drought declared’ before a range of subsidies could be accessed. This was often too late for many as their feed supplies were dwindling, water tanks were running low and saleyards had already received an abundance of drought-affected stock. The new approach will focus on supporting farm business preparedness and risk management programs in addition to offering in-drought measures. A new Regional Assistance Advisory Committee will be the key body advising the NSW Government on the new farm business management and resilience program. The Committee will oversee the development of new monthly Seasonal Conditions Reports, replacing the old state drought declarations and provide a strategic advisory tool to help farmers prepare for the seasons ahead. A State-wide Seasonal Conditions Report will be supported by a set of Regional Seasonal Conditions Reports, based on the new Local Land Services regions. I am pleased to confirm that the Government will continue to provide $840,000 per annum in funding to the Rural Financial Counselling Service until 30 June 2015. The Rural Support Worker program has also been extended until June 2014 while transport subsidies will be made available to assist in specific cases of animal welfare. These new drought measures could not have come at a better time for farmers in certain parts of the electorate. Peak Hill in particular has been edging closer to being drought declared in recent times. This announcement will indeed be welcome news to many local farmers struggling with drought-like conditions. Local government representatives from the electorate met with State Treasurer Mike Baird last week to discuss progress with the Cobbora Mine proposal. It followed his visit to Dubbo last November and ensured that participating councils left the meeting with greater confidence knowing that a decision on the future of the mine will be reached before the end of May. That greater certainty over development of the mine will help with encouraging business and investment in the region. The Treasurer has extended an offer to work closely with councils to identify other infrastructure and economic stimulus opportunities in the event that the project is delayed by the decision in May to reduce the effect upon those communities waiting for the mine to come on line. Dubbo girls are set to shine at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in a few weeks time. The electorate will be well represented with three of its local showgirls featuring in the final of the competition. I was in Eugowra two Saturdays ago to witness strong performances from all competitors in the zone six final of the 'The Land' showgirl competition. I was impressed by the commitment and composure of these young women representing their local show societies. They all share a passion for regional New South Wales and are wonderful ambassadors and role models for their towns. This electorate is indeed fortunate to be blessed with an abundance of remarkable and talented young women looking to represent it at the Sydney Show. Each of the 22 showgirls demonstrated why they deserved to be in the competition and I am glad that I wasn't given the difficult task of having to narrow the choice down to three. The girls selected by the judges to represent their respective show societies in Sydney were Kennedy Tourle of Dubbo, Hannah Barber of Parkes and Eugowra hometown favourite, Lydia Herbert. Kennedy Tourle works for the NSW Rural Fire Service and is also involved with the family farming business. Hannah Barber is completing a Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching courses at Charles Sturt University. Lydia Herbert is a veterinary science student at the Wagga campus of CSU. I know that Kennedy, Hannah and Lydia will proudly represent their families, show societies and the Dubbo electorate in Sydney this Easter.

TEAMWORK CONTROLS BUSHFIRES Teamwork developed between the Rural Fire Service and Cabonne Council played a critical role in controlling three bush fires in the Shire. The Council’s General Manager Andrew Hopkins said the Canobolas Zone RFS and the council had worked extremely well as a team in combating fires at Long Point, Baldry and Nangar during January. “Without the excellent work of RFS volunteers and the strong relationship between the service and council, the out-comes could have been heart breaking,” Mr Hopkins said. Canobolas Zone RFS incident Controller Steve Smith said the council’s support, particularly in providing earthmoving and road building equipment, had been crucial in fighting the fires. He praised the council’s preparedness and the skill of the equipment operators. Mr Hopkins said the RFS’s advanced warning of the fire dangers enabled the council to have operators and plant on stand-by, stationed at strategic locations.
