FACELIFT FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL You may have noticed that our Vinnies was closed over the last few weeks for a well earned coat of paint. In the planning for seven years through Head Office, the unfortunate timing for the closure at the beginning of Christmas shopping had to be adhered to in case another lengthy wait be endured. In response to the closure, our wonderful Vinnies volunteers are closing only two weeks over the Christmas break rather than the usual three, closing from 12noon Saturday 22 December 2012.

Another change at Vinnies is that large furniture items are no longer accepted or available from the store due to limited space and current OH&S standards. Some basic essential furniture items will be available in flat pack form such as tables and chairs. If required, please ask for more information at the counter. Pam Dunford along with her team of volunteers would like to thank the community for their patience during the closure, and hopes to see you in the store again soon.

Ovendried Cherry Tomatoes Cherry tomatoes, washed & halved Salt Olive oil

Preheat oven to 100oC. Line a baking tray with foil, place tomatoes cut side up, touching each other, on foil. Sprinkle with salt & bake in oven for 2-3 hours until completely dry. Remove from oven & cool before packing into sterilised jars, topping with olive oil. Seal & store in fridge. The flavour develops over time, however once opened use the jar within a week. Variation: add fresh herb & garlic when bottling for different flavours. Great used for bruschetta toppings.

CABONNE COMMUNITY TRANSPORT CHRISTMAS RECESS

We greatly thank our volunteer drivers for their untiring efforts during the past year and wish all our valued clients and volunteers

a merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year.

To the editor... The Canowindra Hospital Auxiliary has once again had a very successful year, rais-ing money to cover the purchase of equipment for our Hospital, which includes two commode chairs and one specialist commode chair valued at $988.00, also through the generosity of the family of the Late Judy King we have been able to purchase a lovely oil painting which will be present to the palliative care unit for display at the Canowindra Hospital, we are also in the process of purchasing a Vaccine Chiller for the Emergency Department at the Canowindra Hospital valued at $2,150.00, we held a very successful Christmas Hamper raffle on the 24th November, the winners of the raffle were Mrs Hamer 1st prize and Louise Hodge 2nd prize, congratulations to these lucky people. Without the support and generosity of the Canowindra community we would not be able to achieve these benefits for our Hospital. The President, Mrs Peggy Beath and the Committee of the Hospital Auxiliary would like to take this opportunity to wish the people of Canowindra a wonderful Christmas and a bright, happy and healthy New Year. Regards, Jenny Weaver - Canowindra

L-R: Pam Dunford - President Canowindra Centre, Judy Watt, Annette Walker & Kim Neville some of the wonderful volunteers at Vinnies (I'm not sure who the lady is top left...sorry! Jo)

WHERE'S WALLY? In an unfortunate turn of events, the Mick Thomas & Squeeze Box Wally Show to be held at taste Canowindra next Tuesday night has been cancelled. Squeeze Box Wally, Mark Wallace, suf-fered a serious accident involving a roof and the ground, breaking an arm and shoulder. Bob Craven of taste Canowindra, ensur-ing that the sold out show must go on, has enlisted the talents of local musicians Nerida Cuddy, Bonny and Julie Wythes. These great ladies have played together before at gigs at taste, including the popular folk@canowindra series. The ticket price is now $55 per person and Bob encourages those who have paid to see Mick and Wally already to contact him to discuss arrangements. Bob sincerely apologises to his loyal cus-tomers for the inconvenience and is quite concerned for Wally who has two jobs, muso and taxi driver in Melbourne, both of which he will be unable to do for the next few weeks. Also, it is a dreadful time of year to be incapacitated. Contact Bob or Margaret at taste Canowindra on 02 6344 2332 or [email protected]

A HEARTY RESULT On Saturday night 80 people, eight of whom trekked over from Cowra, attended the Trivia Night to support Canowindra Pool’s fundraiser to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator. Lisa and Jarrod are proud to say, "The funds for this purchase have been raised thanks to the generous community in which we are all a part." The winning table Lynne, Stephen and Stewart Russell, David and Liz Grant, Nick Carne, and Jeevan Khurana from Canberra received vouchers from Saffi Clothing & Accessories, Canowindra Trading Post, Lawrence’s IGA, Jo Bell’s Therapeutic Massage, The Plague & I, Belubula Butchery, Canowindra Pool and Canowindra Newsagency. David Watts won a hamper when his ticket was drawn for the lucky door prize. He was also the winner of the container holding 267 lollies in the guessing competition. By some amazing method of fortune Tara Grant managed to pick the elusive joker winning herself a watch donated by the Canowindra Pharmacy. Lynne Russell outbid others in attendance to win the half hour balloon flight donated by Aussie Balloontrek. The ‘Romantics Pack’, including an absolutely beautiful bunch of flowers from Leanne’s Flowers, and a $50 voucher from the Feedlot Restaurant at the Canowindra Hotel, went to auction and was snapped up by Bowling Club staff member Mick Holdsworth. Winners of the raffle included Trevor Gaut who won a $100 voucher from Canowindra Comprinting; Wayne Beecher received a $60 Gaskill Greens voucher; Leanne Cartwright won the photo frame from Federation Fotos; and Dina Thompson’s table were thrilled when she won an NAB cooler bag and tea towel pack from Bill Paul’s Carpet Centre. The 'Men’s Gift Pack' donated by the Canowindra Pharmacy was won by Dylan Cartwright, and Julie Middleton was over-joyed to win the Reed Diffuser from the Bendy Street Emporium. The final game of the night, 'Process of Elimination', saw Dina Thompson win her second prize of the night, a Galliano Pack provided by the Canowindra Bottle Shop With the help of cash donations over the past few weeks from Canowindra CWA, Phil Gersbach and Melissa Lazarou, Nina Kallas, Mary and Michael Finn, Lois McCaffrey, Jeanette Wheeldon, and Colin Chick, we managed to raise a total of $2,810. Jarrod and Lisa would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came to support the night, the Canowindra Bowling Club for providing the room, and to Chelsea Holdsworth, Jo Carne, Leanne Cartwright, Anthony and Sammy Durkin for helping out on the night.

SECURE IN THE KNOWLEDGE... Senior Constable Greg Trevoars was very impressed with the number of people who attended, and issues that they raised at the Home Security Presentation held on Monday. Around 30 residents turned up for the talk which covered many aspects of home security to maximise safety. A number of people booked SC Trevoars to attend their residents in the new year for a home assessment. Some issues that were clarified were the contact numbers to report different incidents: 000 - for emergency situations, where a life is in danger, a crime is taking place, or in time critical situations; 02 6344 1300 - irresponsible or dangerous driving, hooliganism, vandalism or any antisocial behaviour where a local police presence is required but is not life threatening. If this number is unattended it will transfer automatically to Cowra Police Station, and if their phone is unattended it will transfer to Orange Police Station. This ensures that your call WILL be answered by a police officer and a vehicle can be despatched. 131 444 - if you have been a victim of crime, after it has been committed. For example, if you notice your home has been broken into and the perpetrator has left. If in doubt on what number to phone, call our local police station on 02 6344 1300 or 131 444. SC Trevoars, in his role as Home Security Assessment Officer, offered the following tips for families going on holidays over the Christmas break:  Have a friend or neighbour look after your house for you, either house-sitting or checking every day;

 Use sensor lights externally, and internal lights on a timer for the evening;

 Advise local police the dates you will be away by calling 02 6344 1300. This information will be disseminated to officers on duty.

A follow up meeting is being planned for early 2013, and it is hoped that our local constabulary will attend. Further information will be included in The Phoenix in January. The HACC Office and Crime in Canowindra facebook page would like to thank SC Trevoars for presenting information to help our community focus on safety.

PRESCHOOL PERFORMS AT MOYNE Canowindra Kindergarten Preschool's Tuesday Class spent the morning entertaining the Moyne residents with their ‘End of Year Celebration Concert’. It was a marvellous opportunity to join others in the community and share the joy of song and dance with each other. This was an extremely fun morning for our children to see some familiar faces, perform for others, and the residents to meet some children in our community. The Preschool would like to thank Barry

Burn and Allan Shepperd for driving the bus for the excursion. Also thanks to Melissa Thurtell and Amber Meurs from Moyne who took the time to show the children around the facility and talk with them about their work at Moyne with the residents. A special mention for those who supported our recent Christmas Raffle. The winner was Kevin Middleton, second Ronan Murphy and third Ian Duguid. The raffle raised $600 which will go towards upgrades to the service.

BALLOONS PREPARING FOR LIFT OFF 2013 The Canowindra Challenge, incorporating the 18th Australian National Ballooning Championships, are fast approaching. The event is once again being hosted in Canowindra with the competition starting on Saturday 20 April 2013. Organisers of the event have challenged themselves to deliver a bigger and better event with local community support growing in anticipation. Accomplished balloon pilot and inter-national competition director, David Levin has agreed to return as the Event Director. David was able to familiarise himself to the flying conditions of Canowindra and surrounds earlier this year meaning he will be well placed to set challenging tasks to assist competing pilots hone their skills for 2014 World Championships. Next year competitors have the chance to not only win the Canowindra Cup, but the winning pilot and first runner up of the Nationals will automatically qualify for the 2014 World Championships. Once again there will be ancillary events for all to enjoy - Balloon Glow and Night Market, the chance to WIN with a “key grab” competition, Awards Dinner and much, much more.

To assist in delivering a fantastic event, event organisers, Canowindra Challenge Inc have appointed Adloyalty Pty Ltd, a Canowindra based Marketing Agency to manage event promotion and sponsor-ship drive. This will ensure additional crowd size and attendance from the greater Central West region and beyond. Canowindra Challenge Inc would like to canvass the community for a worthwhile nomination for the 2013 Balloon Glow Charity. Last year the event raised money for the Read Triplet’s to afford new wheelchairs. The charity will be required to man the fundraising drive, and the event organisers will promote the fundraising drive through community announce-ments prior to and at the Balloon Glow. Event organisers are proud to announce that 15 teams have already registered with further enquiries being fielded weekly. If you are an interested pilot/team then we do encourage you to register as soon as possible so assistance can be extended in finding you suitable accommodation. For more information please contact either Jan or Graham on 02 6344 1819 or for event accommodation please call Fiona on 02 6344 1008.

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT! For the last few months, Chris Cuddy has been working in Canowindra High School as a student welfare officer under the federally funded National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program. Chris has been doing some amazing work in the High School which has been appreciated by the whole school community. In 2013, this funding will employ the Student Welfare Officer for 10 hours per week. With your help, this can be increased to two full days per week by raising a further $10,000. Any donations made before the end of 2012 will be matched so that for every $4,000 raised, $1,000 will be donated by major donors. Donations can be made through mychaplain.org.au or you can pick up a donation form from Canowindra High School or from Reverend Jono Williams. All donations made this way are tax deductible. Get behind our local Student Welfare Officer to help their work in supporting our young people and strengthening our local community.

CANOWINDRA RETIREMENT VILLAGE Cabonne Council will work with a committee trying to establish a retire-ment village in Canowindra to find a way forward for the stalled project. The committee has been working for several years to build self-care aged units on a site in Mill Street, adjacent to the railway station. The committee was well advanced with plans with UnitingCare, the Uniting Chu r ch ' s commun i t y s e r v i c es organisation, to construct the units, but was informed two months ago that UnitingCare did not wish to proceed. The council has provided considerable assistance to the committee to help it acquire the land and meet its upfront costs, including the provision of an interest-free $100,000 loan. The loan was to be repaid in February 2011, but the council has extended the repayment period. Mayor Ian Gosper said a committee representative met recently with council, seeking help to advance the retirement village and the council's Community Services Committee was keen to find a way forward. "The best outcome for the project and for council would be for it to advance provided it was found to be economically sound," Cr Gosper said.

CABONNE'S AUSTRALIA DAY AMBASSADOR The first woman to run continuously around Australia will be Cabonne's Australia Day ambassador next month. Sarah Mycroft achieved the feat in 2010, running more than 14,700 kilometres in just under eight months and wearing out 15 pairs of running shoes along the way. The marathon running mum was accompanied by her four-year-old daughter Bonnie and two-year-old son Austin on her "great adventure." Sarah will visit Cumnock, Molong and Eugowra as part of a busy day of celebrations in Cabonne on Saturday 26 January 2013. Council representatives will attend all award presentations in towns and villages not included in the official itinerary. The full timetable for Cabonne villages will be published in The Phoenix early next month.

Tony McGrane Way project comes to fruition: After 14 years of campaigning, the Tony McGrane Way near Tullamore is finally sealed, and I congratulate the local community on their dedication to seeing this project finished. Last week, work began to complete the $3.2 million sealing of the 54km local stretch of road - part of the Hillston to Eumungerie Roadlink Project. When in Government in 2007, I was able to commit funding to this project, so it was very pleasing to be there to see the finishing stages of the project. Congratulations to the hard working Tony McGrane Way (Main Rd 354) Committee for their tireless effort to see this road sealed – a campaign they began in 1998. Finally good news in the NDIS debate: I was pleased to finally see some headway in the long awaited delivery of a National Disability Insurance Scheme at last week’s COAG meeting, with a firm commitment from the NSW and Federal Governments for a full state-wide rollout of the NDIS by 2018. As the former Minister for Community Services, I know very well the need for greater support for people living with disabilities and their carers. My Coalition colleagues and I supported the Productivity Commission's original work on the NDIS, the one billion dollars in the last budget, the five launch sites, the legislation and now today's agreement. NSW achieved what they had sought at COAG - if the Commonwealth had taken a more positive approach this agreement could have been achieved sooner. The agreement shows what can be achieved when the Federal Government adopts a constructive attitude in negotiations with the States rather than the adversarial approach of the last COAG meeting. Coalition eBook launch: Last week, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott launched the Coalition’s book A Strong Australia, and I urge local residents to download the eBook and read for themselves about the Coalition’s positive plans for a strong and prosperous economy and a safe and secure Australia. It’s a free e-book which details all of the Coalition’s plans to help Calare families and make the economy stronger. It’s the plan for government the Coalition has been developing to give everyone the hope, reward and opportunity that we need and deserve. A Strong Australia can be read on your iPad, iPhone, Kindle, Kobo e-reader as well as being available as a PDF from www.liberal.org.au or www.tonyabbott.com.au, and I do hope many local people take the time to read this e-book.

CANCER COUNCIL WALKS THE WALK: Cancer Council NSW is dedicated to ensuring that no-one faces a cancer diagnosis alone. With a local office based in Orange, Cancer Council NSW is a charity whose mission is to defeat cancer by engaging the community. It is often the staff and volunteers at Cancer Council that encourage local residents and businesses to fundraise and advocate for cancer, but on 15 December, the tables will turn. Camilla Barlow, pictured, Community Relations Coordinator for Cancer Council Western NSW, has given herself the challenge to raise $10,000. Camilla will have her locks shaved if she reaches this amount. Camilla has prepared herself to have her head shaven to further demonstrate her commitment to the cancer cause. “Its more than just raising much needed funds for Cancer Council’s research, support, prevention and advocacy programs, I decided to shave my head to also raise awareness amongst my friends” said Camilla at Cancer Councils local Orange office. “A 20-something year old girl without any hair tends to turn a few heads – it’s a very visual thing – so I hope I’ll get more people my age seeing what I am doing and thinking about what they can also do to help beat cancer”, she said. If you would like to support Camilla and see her reach her target please go to http://nsw.cancercouncilfundraising.org.au/shave4change to contribute and watch the funds rise. Want to do something yourself to help beat cancer? Visit www.doyourthing.com.au There are many ways you can easily raise money for Cancer Council NSW - such as shave your head, hold a garage sale, quit smoking, have a competition at work or compete in a fun run.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 10 December 2012

Significant road work is currently being undertaken to seal a section of the Tony McGrane Way between Tullamore and Narromine. Regular road users would know that this seven kilometre stretch of road has remained unsealed for a long time and was in need of urgent attention. Upon coming to government the NSW Liberals and Nationals were determined to honour the election commitment by sealing this section of the road. I was in Tullamore recently and took the opportunity to visit that section of the Tony McGrane way to inspect the work that had been undertaken and was impressed with the progress made. The official opening of the newly sealed section is anticipated to take place early next year. With Parliament behind me I am now able to focus entirely upon electorate specific issues and events. Like many people I always look forward to the run up to Christmas and the opportunity it presents to share in school celebrations of students achievements. Like last year I will be attending school presentations within the electorate. It's always rewarding to experience the sense of achievement demonstrated by students who have completed another year of their education. A recent visit to Buninyong School has served to confirm my view that this school is a shining light in what is sometimes an area of town that doesn't get a lot of favourable publicity. I was impressed by the dedication of the staff and the presentation of the school. I gained a real sense of community from my visit and the students looked happy in such an exciting learning environment. I am delighted that fifty community organisations from across the Dubbo electorate have lodged grant applications for funding under the NSW Government's Community Building Partnership (CBP) program in 2012. The 2012 Community Building Partnership program enables each electorate to submit for consideration projects seeking funding assistance for infrastructure improvements and new facilities. Applications for funding by community organisations submitted by the Dubbo Electorate totalled some $1.8 million. Although each application is worthy of support we simply cannot find funding dollars for each project this year. Unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to consider re-applying next year. Three volunteer run community museums in the Dubbo electorate are among museums across the state sharing in over $50,000 of NSW Government funding. Canowindra's Age of Fishes Museum will receive $1,566 towards installation of an interactive touch screen. The Canowindra Historical Society Museum will receive $1,890 to install a sensor-activated sound scape in the shearing shed, and the Narromine Aviation Museum will receive $1,000 to upgrade its display lighting by purchasing LED lighting. Volunteer-run museums across NSW make an important contribution to the life of local communities, it's important they are recognised. Changes to the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) to be implemented from the beginning of next year will result in a simpler application process for patients claiming assistance. In 2011/12, some 12,774 patients and 6,579 carers submitted IPTAAS claim forms within the Western NSW Local Health District. The changes will eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy by making it quicker and easier to fill in application forms and extending of the application window from six to 12 months. Last year the NSW Government increased IPTAAS funding by $28 million over four years, representing a 30 per cent boost in accommodation subsidies and a 25 per cent boost in petrol subsidies.

Swimming Club First off congratulations to Amelia Holmes and Joe Coady who went to the Parkes District Carnival last Sunday and came away with some impressive results: a second and two thirds for Amelia in 50m freestyle, breaststroke and back stroke respectively; while Joe came third in 50m breaststroke and backstroke. Big improvers in the Spoon were Sammy Austin, Michael Coady 6 seconds; and Caleb Giger 7 seconds. The Spoon final was a cracker with under half a second separating the first four places. Anna McNamara emerged victorious in a PB of 26 seconds closely followed by Paul Sinfield 17 seconds; Stewart Russell 23 seconds and Will Wright 31 seconds. All personal best times! Lane 1 triumphed over the older swimmers in Lane 6, and taking home the brand new Comprinting designed relay pennants were Curtis Bennett, Joanna Balcombe, Anna McNamara, Chelsea Holdsworth, Alex Flannery, Claire Wright, Zac Giger, Michael McNamara, Cayless Dunn and Toby Fisher. Could all swimmers remember that roll call is at 5:45pm. In future swimmers turning up after 6pm may not get to swim.

TALE A CABONNE TIP FOR CHRISTMAS Looking to buy something cheap or different this Christmas? Why not head to your nearest Cabonne tip. You may think it is strange, but we are not talking rubbish. Well actually we are – rubbish that has been recycled and now gives Cabonne waste depots an amazing variety of goods for sale. Manildra and Cargo tips have the best selection of goods, while Canowindra has a plethora of lawn mower catchers. In fact, all Cabonne waste depots at Manildra, Cargo, Canowindra, Yeoval, Eugowra and Cumnock have recycled items that are usually priced between $2 and $10. Prams, strollers, bicycles, microwave ovens, barbecues, books, toys, crockery, timber and aluminium windows, exercise machines, bedside tables and bookcases are just some of the goods that have been recycled and resold. “At times we have even had a full set of golf clubs, a pair of snow skis in good condition, a brand new electric frypan still in its box and petrol whipper-snipper that started first pull,” Council’s Senior Environmental Officer Lex Stewart said. He said selling recycled goods reduced the amount of material going into landfill, which prolonged the life of the Shire’s tips. “That’s why we sell them at such low prices, with most items going for $5,” he said. But be warned, there is one drawback. “At those prices, we don’t give any warranties!” Lex said.
