Chris Pursehouse, the State Community Strengthening Manager for NSW, based in Albury outlined the next steps, positive about the support shown by our town, "It looks like we have a committee to push forward. The next steps are up to the committee. "The campaign should kick off in earnest within the next four to six weeks." The Canowindra Business Chamber, then headed by David Cullane, has been inves- tigating the option of a Community Bank model for Canowindra for some years, with the initial meeting being held with representatives of Bendigo Bank in June last year. After a public meeting was held in October 2012 it was decided to proceed with the project. Now, under the guidance of Chamber President Eddy Wilkinson, a group of enthusiastic people have gathered to continue the momentum of the project, which if found to be feasible, may take up to three years until fruition. Human governance is irrelevant to natural processes but anywhere nature does not guide mankind, landscape function is reversed to dysfunction making desert, & human decisions always have made desert, reducing vegetation & most local species (desertification), over historical time. The restoration of whole landscape function is the prerogative of all the other species that serve nature & ourselves as servants to support our needs, together in community making multiple species habitat in common by natural increase, as well as evolving together with land & water as “peak function” (production). Microbes, plants & animals co-evolve with soil & water, productively together. It is only when the natural order is dis-turbed continuously, that devolution occurs, as in our present day. Restoration Ecology (“Landsmanship”) is in reality, simply producing MORE naturally & putting back MORE naturally of what people take away, just as nature does with-out human intervention. Nature farmed our land far more productively of all species, soil & water than we have, before we arrived & will again after we die out, as a species. It is time in our modern day, to naturalise our wonderful natural country of Australia, for all our peoples benefit by applying the principles of L O R E (nature’s unchanging laws) as our own species living practices to our own land at scale, in small or large, independent, self organising, self sustaining communities where all the ecological skills of living & working are in vogue & well understood, to shrink the manmade desert (Nature thinking paradigm). And where most of what is produced locally & nationally is used locally & nationally with a surplus over for others, without encouraging the excessive export of our natural resources (industrial thinking, paradigm), from farm, nation or continent that is really, massive erosion of our natural resources. For nature works for each of us as we live, especially in rural Australia, regardless of any human control, by artificial practices, regulations & laws invented to build (a now faltering) civilisation (supporting artificial life styles). The decline of our civilisation has been simply brought about over time by most of our people generally & an overzealous bureaucracy & big business (good & true people though they all are). It is unfortunate that most modern day people only have a shallow ecological understanding (not knowing enough) of how the natural land & water systems (ecosystem) work for FREE when functional, without human inter-vention. The more we experience government spending, (funding) restructuring & changing names of institutions but not changing people, the more we know that our civilisation is in collapse mode. The more we experience the individual freedom, behaviour & natural increase of all species present (increase of natural resources, locally), then the more we know that a new & positive human world is naturally evolving as the natural ecology of where we live. It is my wish that I see all healthy, wealthy Australians self employed happily, locally where they each live on the land in functional country (as ecosystem) that naturally supports them & their families, in every way, with a surplus over for others, as nature intends abundance to be. To the editor... Natural paradigms of thought are all but extinct. People tend to think in paradigms stemming from an original theme or mind set, ie. Cultural beliefs. Inadvertently our modern civilisation has taught our people all the disciplines that support this artificial industrial civilisation we now have in Australia, without a supporting study of the Earth’s surface evolution & the natural ecology. People generally in our day have lost their nature consciousness, without realising in confusion that we as a species are an integral part of the nature of Earth that supports all of life as a natural continuum, where we live, too. The definition of Science is; “The Study & Under-standing of Repeatable Natural Phenomena”. Ecology is the fundamental Science from which all Science develops. Human decision has “created” such an industrialisation of our country over the modern era, that in our modern day & over my own life time, farmers have been converted from being natural producers to being artificial consumers (I was as well - once) of manufactured products as well as consuming soil & water at an unprecedented rate. Our water & our food are artificially supplied & processed now & water quality & nutrient density of food that grantees our health, is now lost in human occupied Australia, especially in urban living societies. Modern day Agricultural Science, has been based upon the human logic of government stimulated export industries & monetary economics & Agriculture is now a failed industrial science using more natural resources, than it produces in a self made desert. Agriculture has failed to feed all the people living, has failed to make more soil & has failed to make more water available locally wherever modern day agricultural concepts are practiced, & has failed to make more money for farmers, worldwide. Whereas “Farming” using natural processes or eco-logic (Nature thinking as ecology working), does feed all the people & all the species living locally, does make more life on the land, does make more soil each year & does make more water available wherever people live. And Farming naturally does make more money for farmers, by reducing costs & increasing profits, where they farm naturally without spending money to buy anything in, to “farm” the natural increase of ecosystems (systems thinking, paradigm). Also “Farming” is the only business in the world that has a FREE supply chain, drawing down excess atmospheric gasses, to naturally increase species & soil as well as hydrate the land, using natural processes. Although not publicised very much yet in the all pervading media of our day, we farmers can just by “reading our own country” using our now deeper ecological understanding, learned in practice & a better knowledge of natural physics, can farm naturally engaging “task specific” plants & animals of our choice. On our own land we can also realise just how the land, water & species works functionally of its own volution as an ecosystem, (the new discipline of Restoration Ecology as farm practice) & that everyone living in functional valley landscapes can now have FREE food, FREE water, FREE energy, FREE housing, FREE transport & FREE habitat in common, using what we have locally without seeking licences or permission from institutions or spending much money.

CANOWINDRA HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM

The recent AGM of the Canowindra Historical Society resulted in Peter Burnheim being elected as the new President. Peter has worked with the Society providing IT expertise for some years and said he is looking forward to the opportunity to be involved in its strategic direction for the future. "Members have done a great job in collecting and researching the community’s history for more than four decades," Peter said. "Recently the Museum received an award in Collection Management from Museums & Galleries NSW. We’re hoping that this acknowledgement of the Society’s work will encourage new volunteers to become involved." With that in mind the Society plans to regularly advertise job descriptions so community members will know exactly where help is required and can consider matching their skills with those jobs. POSITIONS VACANT Museum Guides: If you enjoy talking to people and you have an interest in history this is the volunteer job for you. It includes welcoming visitors and giving an overview of the displays. New volunteers will be trained and placed with experienced guides while learning the ropes. Hours are flexible. For more information phone Anne 02 6344 1817 or call in at the Museum adjacent to Memorial Park on Gaskill Street.

REGISTER YOUR TEAM Graham Rice's team "NewsEGGency" has thrown down the rolled up newspaper and is challenging other teams to register...so get ready to have some kooky family fun at the Canowindra Fitness Path EGGcellent Games being held at the Sports Oval at 4pm on Easter Saturday 30 March. Julie Middleton and the intrepid Fitness Path working group have been diligently putting together some unique games to appeal to everyone. So grab your granny, pop, niece, nephew, neighbour or church minister, and register your team of eight TODAY (or tomorrow, but do it SOON... and if you aren't able to participate, you can come along on the day to EGG on the competitors!!!) It is rumoured that one event involves boxing gloves, an enormous cardboard box, packing peanuts and a goat! Other challenges have mysterious names which include: “Eggcentric”, “Easter Basket” and “Crack ‘em Up”. You don't need to be fit, you don't need to be athletic and you don't need to be sporty, however you need to be clothed, preferably in an Easter theme, and you need to LOVE having fun, lots of fun. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Dressed Individual (Easter theme), Best Team Name and Most “EGGcellent” Team Overall. There will also be alternative activities and games for younger children so they don’t miss out if their parents are in a team. After the games there will be a barbecue and bar at the rugby club starting at around 6pm. Teams of 8 can register now for $80 per team at the Newsagency, Health Centre or by contacting Julie Middleton on [email protected]. A form will also be available on our new facebook page www.facebook.com/CanowindraFitnessPath If you would like to be involved but are unable to get a team together, please put your name down at the Newsagency with a contact number and the Fitness Path working party will organise you into a team. Teams are encouraged to be at the Oval by 3.30pm to ensure a smooth start.

The Hon John Cobb MP

Federal Member for Calare FEDERAL ROUNDS Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security

Monday 11 March 2013

Better support for Calare mums and dads: Following on from International Women’s Day last Friday, the Coalition has outlined its plan to help mums and families get ahead, boost workforce participation and improve productivity. We will help new mums spend more time with their babies and later continue their careers by offering them a fair dinkum paid parental leave scheme based on their real wage rather than the minimum wage. All women who meet the current work test will be better off. For example, women on the average full-time wage will be more than $21,000 better off. We will provide flexibility for fathers to take two weeks paid parental leave at their current wage, or the minimum wage, whichever is greater (providing a payment up to a maximum $5,770 for the fortnight). The Coalition will also help parents meet the challenges of balancing work and family by helping to make child care more flexible and affordable. We will immediately task the Productivity Commission to undertake a Review into child care to ensure parents have access to more accessible and more affordable child-care. The Coalition has already released proposed terms of reference for a Review. This will be particularly relevant in Calare, where childcare shortages have been a concern for many parents. We will work with state and territory governments, as well as child care providers, to improve the implementation of the National Quality Framework and ensure that child care centres can focus on caring for children rather than filling in government forms. Peacekeepers to be honoured: I was pleased that the Council of the Australian War Memorial has agreed to include peacekeepers on the Roll of Honour. It will now recognise all those Australian Defence Force personnel who make the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their nation be that sacrifice on warlike, non-warlike or peacekeeping operations. Since 1947, thousands of Australians have served their nation in peacekeeping operations right across the world. Forty-eight of them have made the ultimate sacrifice but, because of the type of mission they were undertaking, were until now deemed ineligible for inclusion on the Roll of Honour. Last week’s decision to ensure these names are etched in bronze on the walls of the Australian War Memorial is the right decision and comes as this nation prepares to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac. The surviving families of the 48 men who gave their lives can now take comfort in the knowledge that their sacrifice will be forever remembered by their inclusion on Australia’s Roll of Honour. Community Partnerships Program – Wallerawang to Orange: TransGrid has recently released their Community Partnerships Program which provides funding support to initiatives that deliver lasting benefits to communities in areas where it has committed to major projects. In 2012, the program delivered a total of $48,000 in funding support to 12 community initiatives across the Western Sydney Supply Project and Manildra to Parkes Project areas. I encourage not-for-profit organisations within the Local Government Areas of Bathurst, Orange, Lithgow and Cabonne to look into this funding avenue. For more information about the Community Partnerships Program, please visit www.transgrid.com.au/partnerships or my website www.johncobb.com.au.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 11 March 2013 It comes as no surprise to discover that the Dubbo electorate includes some of the safest drivers in New South Wales revealed in figures recently compiled by Roads & Maritime Services on the take up rate of half price drivers licences. The State Government announced last year that motorists with clean driving records of over 5 years standing would receive a discount of 50% on the cost of their licence renewal. I'm delighted to hear that Dubbo ranks second in the State for the number of motorists given the discount. The figures compiled by Roads & Maritime demonstrate that more motorists from the Dubbo electorate have taken up the offer at a greater rate than anywhere else in the State bar Port Macquarie, with 1059 drivers of Dubbo's 28,060 licence holders granted a discount. We were actually number one on a per capita basis given that Port Macquarie has a larger population and only just fell short of pipping them on the take-up rate for discounted licences. Each year, hundreds of people are killed on NSW roads due to risky driving behaviour. The ‘Fair Go for Safe Drivers’ scheme provides a saving of up to $81 off the cost of a licence for drivers who do the right thing during a five year period. This incentive rewards good driving behaviour while encouraging greater numbers of drivers to get behind the scheme. 'Fair Go for Safe Drivers' has been developed in response to community calls for NSW motorists to be rewarded for safe driving. Of the 4.3 million drivers registered in NSW, 2.1 million are eligible for the discount. More than 157,000 drivers have taken advantage of the discount since it was offered in July last year. The fact that across the State 86,808 women have taken up the discounted licence compared with 71,130 men will no doubt lead to further debate over which gender is safer behind the wheel. Based on this result, the girls hold a clear numerical advantage over the boys. I believe that it is only fair that we reward drivers who do the right thing on the road. This scheme leads to a win-win situation whereby everyone benefits: the individual motorist who pays less for their licence and all road users who encounter less reckless driving behaviour as a result. Drivers in the Dubbo electorate have more than their fare share of additional hazards and obstacles to contend with, such as kangaroos and adjusting to vastly different road surfaces. This pleasing result speaks volumes for the skill, patience and judgement of drivers in the Dubbo electorate. Last week I had the pleasure of announcing Trudy Hanson as the Local Women of the Year for the Dubbo electorate as part of the 2013 NSW Women of the Year Awards. The Women of the Year Awards showcase inspirational stories of commitment, sacrifice and extraordinary achievement. Trudy was nominated for her out-standing work in supporting people during times of loss and handling their grief. Trudy is the driving force behind the National Association of Loss & Grieving (NALAG) which was born out of the Granville train disaster. Women like Trudy are fantastic role models and I hope this recognition of her commitment to helping people in times of need helps to inspire others. The highlight of my week however was attending the unveiling of a headstone at Narromine Cemetery in honour of Aboriginal Tracker Jimmy Nyrang. James “Jimmy” Nyrang was employed as a tracker by the NSW Police Force between 1900 and 1902. He played a prominent role in the tracking of Jimmy Governor who was wanted over the murders of the Mawbey family at Breelong, near Gilgandra on 20 July 1900. He died in 1928 near Narromine and was buried in the Narromine Cemetery where his grave was marked with a white timber cross. The formal headstone unveiled by local police to acknowledge the work he did with the force also includes the symbol of his aboriginal totem, the possum. Orana Local Area Command worked closely with the Narromine Ngurra Mayin Elders for the 12 months in preparation for last week's commemoration service.

SWIMMING CLUB Brighter weather greeted medley champion-ships and the swimmers actually got to swim after championships were over. Champions will be announced on presen-tation night which is only two weeks away. Winners will be unveiled after the AGM and before a barbecue which will wrap up the season. Back to the Spoon this week where the eventual winner dropped his time by 5 seconds overall, but never by more than 2 seconds at a time. Sammy Austin won the spoon by just over half a second from Talitha Stanley and Sammy now has a PB of 32 seconds. Belly Flop winner was Dominic Smyth who, though light in weight, executed a Perfect 10 of a flop. The relay was won by Lane 5 as Mitchell Stanley held off all challengers on the last lap. Taking home the relay pennants were Ryan Ellis, Eliza Mitchell, Taylah Cahill, Julia Stanley, Chelsea Holdsworth, Wade Kinsela and Josh Flannery. This last week of swimming is the 400m freestyle so all those endurance swimmers be ready for the 12 laps by 5:45pm on Friday night.

WESTERN CHALLENGE LEAGUE TAG DAY Twelve teams are already confirmed for the Ladies League Tag ‘Western Challenge’ to be held at Tom Clyburn Oval Canowindra Saturday 23 March. It's shaping up as a bumper day with some of the finest female athletes across the Western Region showcasing their League Tag skills. Confirmed teams so far are Canowindra Tigers, Cowra Magpies, Young Cherry-Pickers, Cargo Blue Heelers, Molong Bulls, Orange Hawks, Orange Cyms, Bathurst St Pats, Blackheath Blackcats, Eugowra Golden Eagles, Condobolin Rams, & Grenfell Goannas are all primed to make an impact on the challenge, now in its third year. The Carnival at Canowindra continues on from Parkes in 2011, won by Canowindra Tigers, and the Bathurst Carnival in 2012, won by Bathurst St Pats. The day is expected to start around 11am, and organisers believe there may be more entries, with nominations closing on Friday 15 March. A full draw and extra information will be available in next week’s issue of The Phoenix. The game of League Tag has proven to be a real winner and Western Region Manager Peter Clarke was glowing when he spoke about the success of League Tag in the Central West, “The popularity of league tag continues to grow. "Establishment of competitions in the Woodbridge Cup, Lachlan JRL and Group 10 has seen female participation increase from around 100 registered players in the Western Region in 2009, to more than 400 in 2012. "This growth is reflected in the nominations for the Western Carnival at Canowindra with 12 clubs participating. The introduction of League tag has created various benefits to clubs in the Western Region, the CRL continues to encourage more clubs to get involved.” For the traditionalists who love their rugby league, there will also be a men’s rugby league trial on the same day at Canowindra, which will see the Canowindra Tigers take on the Robertson Spuddies in their annual clash. That game will kick off at 12pm and be played on Field 3 at Canowindra, with the ladies holding centre stage on the main ovals. A raffle will be run on the day with all funds raised going to the Morgan brothers trust.

Above (L-R): Sophie Phelan (Tiny Tots), Laura Atkinson (Under 7s), Jackson Stacey (Under 9s), Scout Stacey (Under 6s) and Elise Watson (Under 6s) with Club President Andrew Phelan.
