Cont. from page 1The next award went to Canowindra Rugby Union Club for Community Group of the Year and was presented by Con Guihot to Allan ‘Westy’ Wyburn and Graham Rice, complete with pretty flowers! Westy said “I’d like to thank the Club members and everyone who has supported the Club.” The ‘Pythons’ as they are better known, have been operating since 1974 and have donated to numerous causes over the years including raising over $10,000 for the McGrath Foundation in 2012 and donating $1000 to the Sports Trust for a defibrillator. Mark Brown, a long serving ‘py-thon’, said “it’s great for the Club, great for all the people involved. The Club has put a lot of effort into the community and it’s nice to be recognised by Cabonne Council.” The last award of the day went to Tommy Jeffs for Best Australia Day Window Display although Tommy was unable to attend the ceremony. Marion and Lucy were then invited to cut the Australia Day cake and Reverend Williams rounded the presentation off with a chant of, “Aussie Aussie Aussie!” The revelry contin-ued throughout the day in peoples back gar-

dens and the towns drinking establishments. The Canowindra Hotel, which had a Bogan theme for the day, held its annual gum boot and thong throwing competitions in Memo-rial Park and boat racing competitions in the beer garden. Happy Australia Day to you all and we hope you’ve all recovered.

Country Labour Candidate Calls For Trans-parency Over Caves Controversy- Country Labour Candidate for Orange, Bernard Fitzsi-mon has called upon the NSW Minister for Wa-ter to immediately release the scoping study for the proposed new dam on the Belubula River. The plan is for the dam to be constructed on top of the environmentally sensitive Cli-efden limestone caves, home to 400 million year old marine fossils and an endangered spe-cies of bat renowned for its insect controlling capabilities. “Growth is great; growth at any cost is not… Well over 2 million dollars of NSW taxpayer funds will be wasted on this scoping study for a dam that should never be built” says Mr. Fitzsimon, “there will be no benefit for downstream and upstream farmers, water us-ers, regional communities, industries or Mur-ray Darling system flows” he added.

Farm Planning For 2015

With a good, wet start to 2015 and more rain predicted it’s time now for the local farmers to start planning what equipment and hay and grain feeders they need for this year. For all farmers’ planning it’s worth noting that Lachlan Steel Power Tools Plus has been servicing Cowra and the surrounding areas for over sixty years and they offer a lot more than the name suggests. “Lachlan Steel doesn’t represent everything we do except steel sales, Power Tools Plus will hopefully become more dominant over the next year,” says Manager, Jerone Bodiam, “of course around here we’ll probably always be known

as Lachlan Steel!” he joked. They provide in-dustrial equipment and power tools as well as being a Ranbuild dealer who design and build all kinds of standard garages and sheds as well as custom sheds to any size. There is a workshop on site so any manufacturing modifications can be completed quickly and easily. They also build trailers and Ute trays and have been producing the renowned Cow-ra Lick Feeder and other farm feeders for 30 years. “We have sheep ramps, fencing wire, all rural based products. Our workshops give us the ability to modify and manufacture quickly. We have very competitive pricing and will have for the long term” says Jerone. Current specials include 10% off all hay and grain feeders for the month of February. For anyone working in a rural or farming back-

With s ummer drawing to a close and the kids just about back at school, now’s your chance to grab a bit of ‘you’ time.

January is the time for summer sales, hit the shops to snap up marked down stock for great savings. The new season autumn clothes will soon start to appear in the shops and colours to look out for are black (of course), winter sun and alpine blue sitting alongside blazing orange and fir cone brown, all teamed back with matt or metallic. For a truly indulgent treatment, head to Verde Spa in Forbes. Owned by Sophie Petropoulos, this environmentally friendly business is unique in its commitment to eco-friendly products (plus you always leave feeling fabulous.) I was given a voucher for Christmas and chose the Organic Body Co-coon Wrap Treatment. This treatment gives you a full body exfoliation to eliminate dead skin and stimulate the blood flow, leaving skin silky smooth and complexions glow-ing. After this a deeply moisturising mask is applied to your whole body, before you’re wrapped in a cocoon of foil which allows the products to soak deeply into the skin. I en-joyed a cleansing shower afterwards before being massaged with organise body butter

and body oil. All products are organic and when I came out I felt like I was floating and very relaxed. For any fans of E.L. James’s novel ’50 Shades of Grey’, the raunchy book is coming to the big screen in Orange in early Febru-ary (just in time for Valentine’s Day). Popular among housewives the world over the trailer, which shows a glimpse of the exploits of Mr Grey and Miss Steele, looks good- but be wary! Perhaps not the best movie for a first date, and definitely not one to take your mum or grandmother to! Our next edition will fea-ture a Valentine’s wish-list to point hubbies in the right direction, remember gents…happy wife, happy life!

What Women Want...

At this time of the year, mums all around Australia struggle to find new and inventive ideas on what food to send the kids to school with. The main aim is to have an empty lunch box when your little ones return home and an added bonus is to sneak healthy foods into their lunch so they’re not loading up on sugar. Donna Hay has suggested these two recipes which can be prepared ahead of time so you have one less thing to worry about in the mad morning rush.

Apricot and Coconut Balls

• 1 cup dried apricots• 1 tblspn honey• 1 cup shredded coconutPlace apricots, honey and ¼ of the coconut in a food processor, then blend until mixture

is well combined. Using wet hands, roll ta-blespoons of the mixture into balls, and then in the remaining coconut to coat. Refriger-ate until needed. Makes 10. For some extra fun the kids can help you roll the mixture – they are more likely to eat their lunch if they have helped prepare it.

Zucchini, Cheese & Pasta Slice

• 1 ½ cups small pasta• 3 medium zucchini grated• 1 cup ricotta• 1 cup grated cheese• ¼ cup vegetable oil• 4 eggs• 1 cup SF flour• Salt and pepper • Grated cheddar for sprinkling.

Preheat oven to 180C- cook the pasta in salted boiling water for 8 minutes. Drain. Place the pasta, zucchini, ricotta, cheese, oil, eggs, flour and S & P in a bowl and mix well to combine. Spoon into a lightly greased 20 cm x 30 cm tin lined with non- stick bak-ing paper. Sprinkle with extra cheddar, and bake for 30-45 minutes until golden. Cut into squares. Serves 8-10. This recipe keeps well in the freezer, making it a perfect last minute lunch! Don’t forget to add in some dairy and a wa-ter bottle for hydration, Lawrence’s IGA has poppers on specials at only $1.79 this week! If you’re a kitchen whizz when it comes to kid’s food, please send your recipes into us and we will include them in next week’s issue.

Just a Short Drive to

WellingtonThe Phoenix team were spoilt rot-ten on their trip to Wellington last week thanks to Tourism Manager, Kellsey Melhuish. Kellsey was kind enough to show us around, reveal-ing that there’s much more to Wel-lington than just caves…After a year of hard work and an extensive refurbishment, The Cow and Calf is open for business! Kelly, the new licensee, was a former pastry chef and has brought her skills to the Cow and Calf kitchen. The entire build-ing has received a new look, with black and red décor in the restaurant and hotel areas and high, wooden benches in the bar. The pub also has a large, modern conference room, complete with projector plus 20 guest rooms, perfect for people who want to stay in a clean, modern hotel for a budget price. The bar is decorated with quotes from the hi-larious movie classic, Anchorman, cow skin chairs and glass topped tables and leads out into a spacious smoking area. Hermitage Hill sits as a sentinel on the hill overlooking Wellington. The boutique country retreat and function centre was constructed in 1904 as a hospital. Owner Nigel Logue has worked at the Dorchester in London, the Sheraton in Perth and has opened up around 8 hotels over the course of his career and now has managed create the perfect country geta-way, “we saw the potential of Wellington; it’s the geographical centre of the Central West, the hub of the wheel!” he says. Giving us a tour, Nigel shows us the kitchen (formerly the operating theatre) and the guesthouse which was the nurses’ quarters (now adorned with

rich cream and golden décor, disabled facili-ties and king and queen beds.) There is also a former isolation ward, which now comes com-plete with a luxurious four poster bed. Sitting down to have dinner in adjoining restaurant ‘The Grange’ Kellsey tells us that the dining area used to be the children’s ward where her dad recovered from a broken leg! The build-ing is French colonial in style and looking through the wooden slat blinds to the palm trees outside we could be sat in Singapore. Marilyn has been the proud owner of the Cactus Café for 16 years. A former school built in the Spanish mission style, the en-trance transports you to a shaded school yard in Mexico. “We wanted the name to reflect the style” says Marilyn, “my daugh-ter Beck had been to Mexico and we were brainstorming ideas. We kept coming up with Santa Fe or La Cruz but they just didn’t fit, then someone suggested cactus!” and as the saying goes, the rest is history. “People began giving me cactus for the garden” said Marilyn, “the building was also originally white so we caused a bit of controversy when we painted it orange.” The colours are part of what makes the Cactus Café such a joy to visit, earthy ochre walls and tiles mixed with cool blues warm a coffee drinker’s soul. Out-side you can sit on rustic wooden benches while being watched over by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside, you can shop for trinkets, clothes, toys and jewellery while waiting for your fresh juice or coffee. The Cactus Café’s history is weaved with Marilyn’s, adding an extra element hard to find in chain shops, “five of my siblings went to school here and now one of them is my barista!”

Twin sisters Kate and Abbey Lousick opened up St Louis Boutique for business in Wel-lington two months ago. Abbey, who is a for-mer teacher and Kate a former Health Work-er, had a shared lifelong dream to open up a business that reflected their love of all things fashion. “Our motto was, ‘if not…when?’” says Kate, “We finally worked up the courage and opened St. Louis Boutique.” Emblazoned above the entrance to the changing rooms is the saying ‘a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear’ which perfectly reflects the per-sonalities of Abbey and Kate and the friendly vibe of the shop. The name St. Louis is the fusion of inspiration from their Dad, who is nicknamed Louis and a copper sign they found 3 years ago in a little antique shop in Millthorpe (pictured below next to the girls).

The shop includes labels such as May the Label, Steele, Three of Something, Staple the Label, Finders Keepers, The Fifth Label, Style Stalker, Zed Alliance, M. A. Dainty, Ol-lie & Max and many more beautiful brands… plus jewellery, accessories, gifts, home wares and beauty products. “We didn’t want to restrict the shop to a certain age group, we want our products to be appealing to a wide range of people,” said Abbey. Before leaving we couldn’t resist buying a pair of hot, neon green earrings, we’re sure you won’t be able to resist either! Yahgunyah Cottage is the newest of a set of beautiful, self-contained dwellings in the heart of Wellington. It features 2 large queen rooms and 1 triple room, which sleeps up to nine people. The communal areas are open

plan giving the cottage a spacious and airy feel. Perfect for a family getaway or a ro-mantic break, yet close enough to the town centre to grab anything you need before you shack up. If you want to discover the ‘hidden gem of the Central West’ that is Wellington, events coming up include a Vintage Fair on 1st March (where men can search for the elusive part of their antique thing-gummy they hide in the shed) The Wellington Boot horserac-ing from 28th March and an Art Photography Textiles Exhibition by Kim Goldsmith from the 13th to 15th March. Add to this the beautiful historic walks in and around Lake Burrendong and you’ll be spoilt for choice in Wellington. Thank you Kellsey for showing us around!

Wow back to school already! Besides the kids being so eager who of us are organised to get them back there. It is going to be interesting times now as schools have a bring your own (BYO) device policy for computers. Choose wisely and check with schools and profes-sionals (not sales-people) before purchasing a device for students. Avoid cheap units or bargain specials unless you know they work, android devices may not work well especially in a high school environment.

The run of warm, humid and wet weather we’ve had lately really favours pests and dis-eases in our gardens. This month I’d like to run through the main pest and disease chal-lenges for gardens in our area and the best approaches to controlling them. There’s no one perfect solution for pest and disease control in the garden, but my philoso-phy is to minimise the use of chemical sprays (insecticides, fungicides)-you’ll get better nat-ural control and plant resistance to pests and diseases if you avoid using a “blanket” spray response whenever you start to see them. The main pests in my garden are aphids on roses and some fruit trees; borers in or-namental and some native trees; cabbage moth/cabbage white butterfly caterpillars on brassica vegies; christmas beetles on euca-lypt and silver birch trees; cherry slug on or-namental and fruiting cherry, plum and pear trees; mealy bugs on indoor plants; snails and slugs on vegies and annual flowering plants. Ladybird beetles, small birds and some wasps provide natural control for some of these insects as long as you don’t repel or kill these through over-use of chemical sprays. Keep plants fertilised and well watered-healthy plants will thrive and minimise insect damage. White oil is a low toxicity spray effec-tive against aphids and mealy bugs. Traps can be used to reduce the populations of some insects and snails or slugs. As a last resort, I sometimes use the low toxicity, natural insec-ticide pyrethrum spray. The main plant diseases in my garden are the fungus induced black spot in roses; downy and powdery mildew in roses, some fruit trees and vegies; and leaf curl in peach, nectarine and apricot trees. Where possible, look for shrub and tree varieties that are more resistant to these diseases. Avoid overhead watering onto the leaves of plants, especially in the evening and ensure good air circulation between plants by not overcrowding. Remove and burn fungus affected leaves from plants. As a last resort, spray the plants with a fungicide such as lime sulphur or triforine after winter pruning and if plants become affected by fungus.

Do dizzying heights give you a thrill? Is Phile-as Fogg your idol? Are you a lover of all things ‘balloon’? The Canowindra International Bal-loon Challenge is recruiting volunteer observ-ers for this year’s event now. Held from the 11th to 19th April, this is an exciting oppor-tunity to interact and become involved with competition hot air ballooning. The main objective of a balloon competition is to rank

competitors according to their skill in vari-ous flying tasks, and to reinforce friendship among aeronauts from all over the world. Observer’s main duties are to be impartial when recording particular positions, times and distances. Mrs Falconer, an observer in last year’s event, said “hearing the word ‘observer’ you think of somebody serenely watching. Being a hot air balloon observer is

Trades and Services

a bit more complicated and possibly should be called a hot air balloon ‘police person’ as what you are there to do is watch judiciously that all rules are followed by both the pilot and the crew.” Training in map reading, rules and respon-sibilities will be provided, plus lots of oppor-tunities to get together with fellow observers and balloon crews at social functions. For those travelling from afar free camping is available along with free entry to Night Glow and a ‘last supper’ to complete the exciting week. Once you’re a qualified observer you can have the opportunity to observe over-seas or all around Australia. “It’s a buoyant feeling being part of such a fun competition and it feels as though you have a second fam-ily” Mrs Falconer said, “I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a volunteer observer and look for-ward to April 12th for this year’s competition to begin!” The event lives up to the name ‘Balloon Challenge’ with the first challenge for observ-ers is to start work at 5am. Other challenges include climbing fences, searching for mark-ers and trying to orienteer and balloon spot simultaneously. But as a great philosopher once said, what’s life without a little chal-lenge? If you fancy being a volunteer ob-server this year, contact Amy at Volunteering Central West on 6332 4866 or email Jack at [email protected]
