To the editor... I watched a report delivered on ABC 7:30 tonight (21Nov12) in which an interview oc-curred with a person who had, ostensibly, visited both Nauru and Manus and gave his opinion on living conditions that might be ex-perienced by illegal immigrants. Well, folks, suck it up. My grandparents were drovers of sheep along the long paddock who lived without flowing water, air-conditioning, and slept on the back of a horse-drawn dray. The mother of my lovely partner lived in a tent with two babies in 45 degree heat along the woodlines of WA, among a host of similar families who suffered the same travails. Let us not also forget the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and women who over the years and battles who 'lived' under canvas in wet and dry conditions. A similar contemplation of the families who lived with their fettlers along the railway sys-tem that allowed the progress of Australia might also be salutary. I do not forget either the people who went into the bush to clear and cultivate the farms that are the well-spring of the food bowl products enjoyed by the moaners. To let these later interlopers seize the moment by playing on our guilt and, as a caring Aus-tralian people, to further their cry of 'foul' when they are uninvited and lob on our char-ity like sea-gulls at a chip bowl is tantamount to a slap in our collective face. A pox on them and let them be sent back to whence they came, along with the superior observers who have never experienced the conditions of the land from which they came, nor the reality of our past from where they (the Australian centric observers) sprang. Yours (very) Sincerely Robert Sherwood - Morley WA

To the editor... Vinnies Community Barbecue was held last Sunday 25th November & was another great success. Those who attended experienced great food, great company & great enter-tainment for the children. Even though the temperature soared, a great time was en-joyed by all. Many thanks are extended to Mim Loomes who opened our evening, the Vinnies volunteers, Kevin Smyth & Peter Dawes who prepared the fabulous food, Canowindra Bakery for the Christmas Cake, Ken McNamara for providing the venue & play equipment for the children, Peter Stacey who entertained the children. Thanks also to Toby and staff at the Belubula Butchery for their support, and Jo Gaigals for her continuous support through The Canowindra Phoenix & a very special thank you to those who came along to the afternoon & shared their time with us. PANEL CALLS FOR FEEDBACK ON DRAFT LOCAL LAND SERVICES BOUNDARIES From January 2014, Local Land Services will replace Catchment Management Authorities, Livestock Health & Pest Authorities and incorporate agricultural advisory services currently provided by Agriculture NSW. Stakeholders and community groups are invited to have their say on draft regional boundaries for the new Local Land Services by Friday 7 December on the Have Your Say website at: http://haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/locallandservices Chair of the Local Land Services Stakeholder Reference Panel, Natural Resources Commissioner, Dr John Keniry AM, said public input and feedback is key to getting the regional boundaries right. “After careful consideration, the Stakeholder Reference Panel has proposed a set of draft regional boundaries that create 11 individual Local Land Services,” Dr Keniry said. “These boundaries are an important building block for the establishment of the new model and it is important that farmers, landowners, our key partners and the wider community have the opportunity to provide feedback on what we’ve proposed. “These draft regional boundaries are the first of several proposals the Stakeholder Reference Panel will be making on various key features of the new Local Land Services, which include governance structures, rating framework and core functions." Local Land Services will be an integrated service delivery model that replaces Catchment Management Authorities, Livestock Health & Pest Authorities and incorporates agricultural advisory services currently provided by Agriculture NSW. This new approach to delivering services across rural and regional NSW links natural resource management to productive primary industries and will modernise service delivery at a local level through greater interaction and enhanced accountability to customers.

IMAGINE THAT! Canowindra Historical Museum and the Age of Fishes Museum were both Highly Commended in for Collection Management and Audience Development respectively, at the IMAGinE awards at the White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney on Friday night 23 November. Seventy museums and galleries from NSW and ACT were nominated across four categories with awards presented at a gala cocktail party where more than 100 delegates gathered to acknowledge the achievements of volunteers and paid staff. The IMAGinE awards celebrate the strength, diversity, innovation and dedication of organisations that make up the NSW and ACT museum and gallery sector, which includes the giants such as the Powerhouse Museum and Art Gallery of NSW as well as the smallest of our volunteer run museums. The Sustainable Collections Project was also Highly Commended in its category. The SCP is a three way initiative of Cabonne, Orange and Blayney Councils and is an annual regional museum program which supports volunteers though training, resource materials, marketing etc and has been of great assistance to Canowindra’s museums. CEO of M&GNSW, Michael Rolf, congratulated all paid and unpaid staff for their contributions, which continue to make the museum and gallery sector a strong and vibrant asset for the people of NSW and ACT. Let’s hear it for Canowindra!

HAPPY 34TH ANNIVERSARY! Johnny Lawrence and trusty sidekick Peter Watt will have been part of the Gaskill Street scene for 34 years this Wednesday 28 November 2012. Mr Lawrence is one of the largest employers in Canowindra and through the IGA has donated thousands of dollars over the years to community groups and projects. Recently Mr Lawrence and his team have extended opening hours over the weekends in response to the needs and shopping habits of customers. The new hours have become so popular it is being considered to keep them in place throughout the period of Daylight Savings. So when you're heading to a friend's place for a barbecue, or out to the dam for the weekend, stop in and stock up...shop locally. Lawrence's IGA is focused on high quality customer service, where else these days can you have your groceries carried out to your car for you? Another benefit of having a locally owned and managed supermarket is that if you can't find what you want, you can ask to have it ordered in, if it is on the extensive stock list. Orders are currently being taken for Christmas goods such as hams, turkeys, chickens, premade and beautifully presented deli platters for Christmas parties. Get in early as supplier's stocks may run low for popular items. Currently Customer Loyalty Points for 2012 can be redeemed. Remember that if you don't have a Customer Number you can ask to get one, or donate your points to Community Chest or the Canowindra Food Basket. Congratulations Johnny, Pete and the IGA team, thanks for all your hard work.

Stir Fry Mix Gaskill Greens' stir fry mix is sinfully easy. Fresh vegetables are chopped, bagged & refrigerated ready for you to take home & fry up in 2 minutes. Containing vegetables that may include capsicum, snow peas, wombok, onion, carrot, broccoli or bok choy, the variety changes with the season. For a quick & tasty side dish: in a wok or large frying pan, heat over high temp 2 tablespoons of Australian grown & processed canola oil, add a few drops of sesame oil for a nutty flavour. Throw in a couple of good handfuls of stir fry mix & stir the crackling veges for 2 minutes. Serve up with a dash of oyster or soy sauce. It tastes great with barbecue meat. For something different, add a hand-ful of cashews or peanuts in with the mix.

You are invited to the Canowindra / Cabonne Council Public Meeting

Gaskill Street Resealing Plan Wednesday 12 December 2012

in the Community Hall at 6:30pm Canowindra Services & Citizens Club

Andrew Hopkins, General Manager, and Rob Staples, Director of Engineering from Cabonne Council will present the plan for community consultation.

Please be prompt, and have your say on the plan...

LISTENING TO LOCALS Angus Taylor, above, the Liberal Candidate for Hume visited Cowra on Monday 19 November as part of a campaign across the twelve local government areas in Hume. During this campaign he is inviting every voter in the community to meet him to talk about the issues that matter most to them. Mr Taylor hosted a function at Cowra TAFE campus where he and Sussan Ley, Shadow Minister for Employment Participation, Shadow Minister for Child-care and Early Childhood Learning spoke, and where he talked with people from Cowra and the district about local issues. Mr Taylor said, “Monday’s function was a big success. I was delighted by the turn out and there was a great cross section of the community there, which was fantastic. My wife Louise and I enjoyed seeing some old friends and meeting many new people from Cowra. “The big message I am getting from locals in the Cowra area - and indeed all of the people who live in the towns around Hume - is that they are concerned about costs of living and the depletion of local services. Health (especially getting more doctors into the regions), education and the depletion of local infrastructure such as roads and rail are what I am hearing most about. “My focus in this election and beyond will be on getting money back in to the regions. Regional economies are once again the engine room of the Australian economy but they are not getting their fair share of the pie. In other words, we in the regions are punching above our weight for the country but not getting a proportionate amount of the money being spent on services.” Angus has taking his team on a meet and greet roadshow to each local government area within the Hume electorate. Nine have been visited already with four to go before Christmas. Each week his team visits the main town in the relevant LGA meeting with residents to find out what matters to them. This, in addition to the results of a community survey, is giving him a keen insight into the local issues right around the electorate. Some issues such as health, cost of living and infrastructure are common almost across the board in Hume. Others, for example the Barton highway in Yass, and TV reception in Crookwell, are very area specific. Cowra and Grenfell residents are mostly concerned about health and roads. There is also a lot of interest in the freight rail project, which Angus believes is very important for the district and regional NSW, and has been talking to Mike Foster of Council regarding this. Angus welcomes feedback from all Hume voters and invites you to call him on 0439 625 665 or via email

ELEVEN DEATHS IN FIVE DAYS Eleven people have died on NSW roads over the five days between Thursday 22 November and Monday 26 November 2012, prompting police to plead with motorists to slow down and drive carefully. The number of deaths on NSW roads this year has climbed to 348, prompting senior police to plead with motorists to ex-ercise extra caution on the roads in the weeks ahead. Commander of the NSW Police Force’s Traf-fic and Highway Patrol, Assistant Commis-sioner John Hartley, said motorists needed to be extra diligent and careful as the busy holiday period approaches. “The tragic loss of life we have seen over the last few days highlights just how quickly things can go wrong on the road,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said. “Motorists need to exercise caution and stick to the road rules at all times. Even the most minor of motorist errors can have tragic consequences. “The festive period is only a few weeks away and the roads will get busy as holidaymakers head for the north and south coasts. “Make sure you are able to enjoy the holiday season with your family. Drive carefully, obey the law and get to your destination safe and well.”

DEBURGER - DELICIOUS! Since opening in June this year Deburger Indian Cuisine has mesmerised Canowindra, not only with the exotic fragrance of different spices drifting along the main street, but the various dishes on the menu inside the restaurant. After a few weeks of tweaking opening times and becoming familiar with the expectations of customers, the staff have now settled into a comfortable routine. If you have never tried Indian food before, now is the time to try. Curry is perfect on a warm Summers day, remember India is a pretty hot place! Meals can be made to suit your palate, if you don't like it too hot, let them know. The beauty of the flavours lies in the combination of spices, it is only the chilli that packs the heat. Only closed on Mondays, Deburger offers various lunch and dinner packs from the buffet or you can order from the extensive menu. If you are in a rush, call them prior to picking up your meal on 02 6344 1148. Find Deburger Indiancuisine on Facebook, and keep up to date with weekly specials.

CANOWINDRA CWA GOES ONLINE The Canowindra branch of the CWA launched an online presence this week, going live with their website. Almost thirty members attended the Christmas Dinner on Thursday 22 November, at which the website was launched, rounding off a great year for the branch. The website aims to help members and others interested in the goings on of the branch to keep up with the latest information about upcoming events, reports from meetings, and the services that the Canowindra CWA can provide to the community, such as catering and hire of the hall. Given the success of the recent Spring Workshops, which aim to help local women share their many talents and skills with each other, the website will help promote and report back on next year's workshop series, which will include crafts, cookery, and computer skills. The branch is indebted to Conni Christensen for developing the site, and Nick Carne from Comprinting for hosting it. The website address is

UNIQUE CHRISTMAS CARD CHOICES The Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said he was blown away by the overwhelming response to his Christmas card drawing competition and had great difficulty selecting a winner. Mr Grant launched the competition last month, announcing that the winning entry would appear on the front of his 2012 Christmas card. "There were a great many schools involved and it provided a wonderful op-portunity to demonstrate the obvious creative talent of students from across the electorate," "I particularly enjoyed the entries that really entered into the spirit of the competition and its central theme of Christmas in the Bush." Mr Grant said. The lucky winner of this year's competition is Zarek Berger from St Augustine's Parish School Narromine. Zarek's artwork will appear on the Member for Dubbo's 2012 Christmas card in addition to receiving a $200 gift voucher for his efforts. "Zarek's entry was a clear standout favourite among this year's entries. His brilliant use of colour and the inclusion of animals that I see on my regular visits to Taronga Western Plains Zoo really caught my attention," said Mr Grant. Second place was awarded to Lily Steele- Park of Forbes Public School who received a $100 voucher. The third placed e n t r y c a m e f r o m P o r t i a Thompson of Macquarie Anglican Grammar School Dubbo who received a $50 voucher. "With over 300 entries, I was faced with the daunting task of choosing a winner. I wish I could reward each and every one of them for their efforts", Mr Grant said. Mr Grant has written to each student who en t e red the compet i t ion to personally thank them for their contribution. "This is the first year that I have run this competition. It has been such an over-whelming success that I can hardly wait to do it all again," said Mr Grant

The Hon John Cobb MP Federal Member for Calare

FEDERAL ROUNDS Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Monday 26th November 2012

Shop local this Christmas With less than four weeks to Christmas, and with gift shopping consuming our thoughts, I’d like to encourage the people of Calare to support small business and, where possible, shop locally for your gifts this year. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and it’s vital we support them where we can, unlike the current Gillard Government. I am passionate about supporting local business, and have strongly welcomed the Coalition’s plan to double the annual growth rate in the numbers of small businesses to around 1.5%. This is the rate of growth achieved by the Howard Government, and would mean adding approximately 30,000 new small businesses each year – twice the growth in small businesses under Labor. Federal Parliament draws to a close Federal Parliament is underway this week for the last sitting week of the year, before we head into the 2013 election year. The scandal-ridden Labor Government continues to draw attention away from the real issues facing people in Calare – like the soaring cost of living, and I for one am fed up with it, as I am sure many of you are. The weekend marked five years since Labor came in to power, and since then we’ve seen the cost of living soar, with power prices up 89%; we’ve seen 30,000 people arrive in Australia on 500 boats thanks to lax border protection policies and; we’ve seen a $70 billion Budget surplus turned into $150 billion in net debt. Needless to say, this will be a hectic and poignant week in Parliament, and I look forward to returning to the peace and quiet of Calare at the end of the week. Jenolan Caves cleans up at the 2012 NSW Tourism Awards Congratulations to the team at Jenolan Caves on its incredible success at the NSW Tourism Awards 2012 last week. Jenolan Caves managed to pick up three accolades: Jenolan Caves – Ancient Underworld won the award for best in Ecotourism; Jenolan Caves – Written In Stone won the award for best in Heritage and Cultural Tourism and; Jenolan Caves – Adventure Underground won the award for best in Adventure Tourism. What a great achievement for all those involved in Jenolan Caves. It goes to show how lucky we are to have such a fantastic tourist attraction right here on Calare’s doorstep.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 26 November 2012

This week marks the end of the Spring session of parliament. Like every other MP from around the state, I am looking forward to devoting more time attending to matters closer to home. I have said it before in this column, the best part of the job is getting around the electorate finding out what local people really think of the latest developments in government policy. I have found that one of the best ways of gauging community sentiment towards a recent policy announcement is to speak with constituents in their own surroundings. Admittedly there have been some difficult decisions taken in recent times, decisions that have been necessary to address a sluggish New South Wales economy. Some reform measures introduced this year involve substantial changes to the way services will be delivered in future. The recently announced initiative Local Land Services is one such reform. With any significant restructure there must regrettably be some job losses. It is equally true however that change often creates new employment opportunities. I have spent a good deal of time visiting other parts of the state hearing what those communities have to say about their water entitlements, how the native vegetation regulations work in practice, what timber towns are doing to deal with the reality of wood supply constraints. Each regional community is faced with its own unique challenges coping with economic and environmental change. The Dubbo electorate is no different in this respect. As I mentioned last week, many in the community were pinning their hopes of an economic revival upon the Cobbora Mine receiving the green light. I have no doubt that once the initial disappointment passes, most will come to realise that a decision to proceed with the mine at this time would have been financially irresponsible for the government to entertain. I know that budgetary constraints have forced some difficult financial circumstances upon both government and non-government schools from next year. Despite these recent difficulties, there are plenty of good reasons to feel confident about the future of region. This year we have witnessed the start of the near $80 million dollar redevelopment of Dubbo Base Hospital and significant progress with the Forbes and Parkes Hospitals. Upgrades along sections of the Newell and Mitchell Highways have undoubtedly improved driver and passenger safety. In fact the Dubbo electorate has fared pretty well with its infrastructure spend compared with elsewhere in the state. The next month will allow me to make a series of visits to different parts of the electorate to see for myself what else needs attention. It will also be an opportunity to tackle some fresh issues and to check on the progress of some perennial favourites. I expect that there might be a few school presentation days to attend along the way as well. Speaking of which, my most enjoyable task last week was choosing a winner from among 300 Dubbo electorate schoolchildren who had entered my Christmas card design competition. With so many entries it was a tough ask but I managed to narrow it down to the three best drawings, each of whom received a gift voucher. The winning design will feature on the front of my Christmas card which should be arriving in letterboxes in the next couple of weeks.
