Cracked walls and limited space maysoon be a thing of the past at the Bela-Bela municipal offices. The municipalityhas been revamping and reorganizingtheir office during the past month in itsbid to improve accessibility andservices.According to municipal spokesperson

Matome Sebelebele the decision torenovate was largely due to thebuilding’s deteriorating state and itsinaccessibility to the disabled.“At the moment we are trying to prettify

our offices,” said Sebelebele. “Crackshave started to occur and the paint ofthe building is old and dilapidated. Thereis also very little or no space for thedisabled to approach the offices.”Sebelebele said that a decision

regarding possible expansion of theiroffices will be taken place in the nextfinancial year. He added that serviceshave not been disrupted or put on holdduring the renovation process. The relocation of the local traffic

offices to the license testing facilities inVan der Merwe road is expected toprovide some relief for the municipaloffices, as there is now more spaceavailable for municipal employees.

We are living in a world in flux.Every day, the world we seechanges around us. We haveaccess now to technology ourparents couldn’t even imagine, andour society is so far from what ithad once been that it might as wellbe an alien planet.A hundred, even fifty years ago,

the very idea of a cellphone wouldhave been unimaginable. A devicein your pocket that can maketelephone calls anywhere in theworld? Preposterous! Where arethe wires? And let’s not evenmention what modern smartphonescan do. The size of your hand, and it can access the entirecollected knowledge of the humanrace. If there’s a stranger sensation in

life than reading the oldestsurviving science fiction novel, which was written in the year 200,on a cellphone, I can’t imagine it.Today, we have access to so

much knowledge. There arecourses available, entirely for free, which can teach you very nearlyanything. Places such as EdX andKhan Academy are dedicated tothe free spread of knowledge andcompetency. At EdX you can takea course on any subject you like, from Genetics to Ancient ChineseLiterature, while at Khan Academyyou can learn skills at your ownpace, entirely free. There is so much knowledge

available to us that we just need toreach out and grab. And that is why the world is

changing. The generation after usis going to grow up surrounded bythe constant flow of knowledge, butthe problem with that muchknowledge is that it is confusingand people, when confused, tendto bunker down.People who are confused, or

scared, or angry, tend to seek outthose who feel the same way aboutthe same things as they do, andthe result is a sort of echo-chamber effect, where all youknow is what you want to know.It is vitally important that we

challenge ourselves. That we leavethe comfort of those who think likeus and try to find out why thosewho differ think differently. Weneed to go out into the world —whether the real world or thevirtual one — and try to see theother guy’s point of view.We have to make an effort to see

another point of view, look at thequestion from every angle, or werun the risk of becoming monkeysin a cave, screaming our opinionsinto the black and taking theechoes for agreement.

The President of the United States,Barack Obama, gave his annualState of the Union address onTuesday.During his speech, he made

reference to a number of things thathe would like to implement during hislast year in office — America ishaving elections in 2016 and hecannot run for President again. Some of the things he would like to

see, he said, is universal healthcare, free education and betterequal rights.Immediately, some people reacted

with cynicism, saying that the Statescould not afford universal healthcare, or two years’ free college forevery citizen. Universal health care, they said, is a pipe dream and cannever be fully achieved. Theyhandily ignore the fact that first-world nations such as the UnitedKingdom, France, Japan, andCanada all have working healthcaresystems where the patient neednever pay a cent directly to thedoctor or hospital. Health care, afterall, is what they pay their taxes for.Citizens of the United States also

pay taxes for medical care. However, the United States’ healthcare system is in such a shamblesthat, for the price of a kneeoperation in the States, you can flyto Spain, live in Spain for nearly ayear, have the operation and flyback home again. Their healthcaresystem is bloated and inefficient, and there is no recourse for theunemployed and the poor. Even wein South Africa have a better systemthan that!Universal education is another

thing that the cynics scoffed at. ‘It’ssimply not possible to educate everyperson in the nation. Freeuniversities are a pipe dream!” theycry. They handily ignore nations likeGermany, which not only offers freetertiary education to each and everycitizen of Germany, but to anyperson, no matter what their origin, provided that they can speakGerman. In Germany, interestinglyenough, for a period of about tenyears universities were not free, asthey had always been. Thestandards fell so badly that thegovernment was forced to step in.We’re still working on the

education thing, but we’ll get thereeventually. The point here is that cynicism and

defeatist attitudes will bring you nogain, and may do you great harm. Why not be optimistic instead?
