The new year had barely startedwhen Bela-Bela was left without powerfor more than two hours on Sunday, 4January.A transformer in Sutter Road caught

fire, which caused the outage.According to a spokesperson from

the technical department at the Bela-Bela Municipality, it appears as thoughsomeone was trying to steal cablesfrom inside the box. There were fewer power outages than

expected during the festive season, due to the success of load shedding. However, Eskom released a

statement recently which indicatedthat the odds are good that, if thedemand increases or one thereserves at one or more of the Eskomsub-stations becomes exhausted, loadshedding may return.

The early morning of Tuesday, 6 January 2015 saw students across thenation rushing to get their hands on a copy of the early paper to find outwhether they had passed matric. Photo: TK Mashaba

The national matric pass rate hasdropped to 75,8% in 2014. Not the bestresult we could have hoped for, but thatmeans that several hundred thousandpeople are now out of school, free andclear. What comes next? Some of you, one would hope, are

planning to go to university or college. That is a good path to choose. It allowsyou another three or four years tofigure out just who exactly you are, andwhat you plan to do with your life. It isto be hoped that most of you will makeit out the other side with qualificationsthat will help you to enter the careers ofyour choice and become productivemembers of society. Some others will probably go for

some other form of tertiary education, while the lucky ones may take a gapyear before moving on fully into adultlife. Some of you will move directly into

some kind of job, falling into adult lifestraight from school. If you are not sure what career you

would like to pursue, there areresources to help you. Unisa has aCareer Guidance website which willhelp you to find what you are lookingfor. It can be found atwww.unisa.ac.za/counselling (.)From all of us at The BEAT, we wish

you the very best in whatever futureyou make for yourself. We hope thatyou become, in time, and in whatevercareer you choose, the best version ofyourself. You are entering a new and exciting

phase of your life this year — the startof your life as adult human beings. It may be hard at times. It will certainly

be very different from what you’re usedto. There are fewer excuses allowed inadult life. More responsibilities. You willhave to learn to live your own life, takeresponsibility for your own successesand failures. Whether you succeed orfail from now on will be solely andcompletely down to you. It will be downto how hard you work, how well youperform. The choices you make inyour life will define it forever. That much responsibility is terrifying.

It can be a weight on your shoulders, weighing you down. Or if you allow it, itcan be an anchor, keeping you steady, keeping you on course. If you acceptresponsibility for your own life, there’snothing you can’t do.That’s all part and parcel of adulthood,

and that’s what you’re standing on thebrink of now.In the words of Peter Pan, “To live, is

an awfully big adventure.”

Many of our matrics this yeardid not make the cut. This isalways a hard time of the year, because as much as we rejoicefor those who have made it, ourhearts also go out to those whofailed. However, it’s not actually the

end of the world if you didn’tpass your matric. I know it mustfeel like it right now. Failingmatric feels like the end of allyour hopes and dreams, and it’sa terrible experience. But don’t lose hope! Many people who went on to do

great things never passed theirmatric — or the local equivalent. Our own president Jacob Zuma, according to his biography onthe ANC home page, does nothave any formal schooling at all.The British author TerryPratchett, who has written morethan 70 books which are sold inevery country in the world, leftschool at 16.It is not impossible to have a

good life without matric. It isharder, yes, but not impossible.Of course, there are many

options open to those who havenot made the cut this year. Youcan re-enroll in school, andhope to improve your marks nextyear. You can do your matricthrough a distance learninginstitution such as Intec, whichhas the added benefit that youcan start working while you doit, and support yourself. There are programs available,

for those who look, that helpthose without matric to obtainsome kind of usefulqualification. Perhaps you couldenroll in apprenticeship-stylecourses, or see if you can findsome kind of internship programin the career you would like topursue. There are alwaysoptions! There is always another road.

Doesn’t the saying say ‘Godonly closes a door if he opensa window’? You can stillaccomplish your dreams. It is a sad fact that the suicide

rate among young people spikesduring the early part of the year,as matriculants find that theyhave not made the cut and feelas though there is nothing leftfor them. There’s always a storyin the news of the young man orwoman who took their own life indespair.Don’t be one of those stories! If you feel as though you are in

danger of committing suicide, for any reason, please contactthe South African Depressionand Anxiety Group at 011 2344837 (8:00-20:00 Mondays toSunday) or, if you areexperiencing an emergency, phone them at 0800 567 567.They have trained peoplestanding ready to help you. Please don’t despair. There is

still hope.
