Legendary musical producer David Foster is headed to Jakarta on the 27th of October and he will be performing a long list of award winning hits for all his fans at the ballroom of Ritz Carlton Hotel Pacific Place. Ticket prices range from Rp1million up to Rp7.5million.

If you thought the Jakarta Jam just wasn’t rocking hard enough for you, well get your neck muscles ready to head bang to Hardcore Punk/Metalcore band hailing from New Haven, Hatebreed. The cooperative efforts of Fulltrek.com and promoter Lian MIpro are bringing members Jamey Jasta (Vocals), Wayne Lozinak (Guitar), Frank Novinec (Guitar), Chris Beattie (Bass), and Matt Byrne (Drums) to perform at Hall Basket GBK Senayan Jakarta on the 27th of October. Get your lungs ready to scream as the guys of Hatebreed are prepared to thrash Jakarta and leave everyone’s ears bleeding.

Be swept away by the melodic harmonies of saxophone maestro Kenny G when he heads to Jakarta on the 26th of October to perform at Central Park Ballroom. Velvet Productions will be the ones responsible for bringing Kenny G to the stage and have set ticket prices ranging from 600K to 5 million rupiah. This won’t be Kenny G’s first time to the capital as he has played for the Jakarta crowd several times before, and this time he’ll also be promoting his latest album titled “Heart and Soul”.

Eight professional DJs will represent their country of origin to battle out their deck spinning skills and prove who the best in Asia is. Indonesia is lucky to be the host of this year’s competition, showing its claws as one of Asia’s most happening party spots. Apart from the DJ bout, guests will also be entertained by DJ Romy and AudioNauts (DJ Ruben & Vicky). For more information on the event, contact Ruben (081387325411) or Vicky (02199990979).

The much anticipated 25th Anniversary Concert by Malaysian singer Sheila Majid has sadly been pushed back from the scheduled 23rd of September date to early next year. Andy Soekasah, the Producer of TIS Communication, the promoters of the event, has made a statement about the concert cancellation, saying in a press conference that due to the non-conducive political climate between Indonesia and Malaysia, the gig had been rescheduled. Fans who purchased tickets can contact 08121007564 or 8282137 for more information on ticket refunds, and also on the date of the rescheduled concert.

5If you haven’t heard of the latest band to take the world by storm in a heartbeat, you’re definitely missing out. Temper Trap, whose lead vocalist hails from Indonesia originally, are an Australian band gone international and they’ll soon be bringing the live sounds to Jakarta. Members Dougy Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne, Lorenzo Sillitto and Toby Dundas released their debut album last year titled “Conditions” and now they are set to spread their wings to distant shores. In doing so, Temper Trap have cut a deal with Ismaya Live to perform in Jakarta on the 12th of November, right after a Bali show. Get set for some soaring vocal melodies and a killer live sound.

ANCOLFRIDAY

8 OCTOBER 5PM

HAve BeeNGrinding together a mix of 60’s rock and the classic grunge infused sounds of the 90’s, The Vines took both their home country Australia and the rest of the world on after their first 7 inch EP release ‘Factory’ pushed the single into NME’s number one spot in 2001. Craig Nicholls (guitar / vocals), Patrick Matthews (bass) and David Ollife (drums) formed their initial sound throughout the 90’s as they performed grunge covers around their hometown. After the success of the first EP they were flown to LA where the album ‘Highly Evolved’ was locked down. With its release came 1.5 million sales, worldwide success, top chart positions and Rolling Stones covers, not to mention a large amount of fans. The band went on to win an Australian ARIA Award for “Breakthrough Artist” for their single Get Free in 2003, and were nominated for “Best Group,” “Best Rock Album,” “Best Cover Art” and “Breakthrough Artist”. After a stack of touring, the band hit difficulties which led to a slow period and some battering by media. In recent years though, with new player Brad Heald on board, The Vines have been pushing their feet back into the doors of music festivals and February of this year began recording their fifth studio album, though a release date is not yet set.

ARe NOWDespite the dark patch, years of experience and stage presence have kept these guys glued to the music and you can be guaranteed that they won’t disappoint when it comes to a live show. Nicholls vocal style is one well worth hearing as he shreds it Kobain style through a festival sized PA system, so don’t miss the chance to see them and a stack more major talent on the stage at Java Rockingland.

For some of you, the name Margaret Leng Tan might not ring any bells. However, in the world of classical music, Margaret Leng Tan is known as a one of a kind pianist who works in the contemporary field. Born in

Singapore, Margaret was the first woman to earn a doctorate from Julliard as well as a classical music artist who is known for her work as a professional toy pianist. She performs around the world on her 51cm high toy piano (klavier kinder). It is no coincidence that Margaret loves these toy pianos so much. Thanks to the famous composer John Cage, whom she met in 1981, Margaret

| 041beatmag.com

was soon in love with the sound of this toy piano. She also became an expert on John Cage music through her relationship with the composer, that lasted to his death. John Cage himself, an American composer, was known as one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde music scene, and for his non-standard use of musical instruments. Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th Century.

It was in 1993 at a thrift store in the East Village in New York, where Margaret bought her first toy piano, which cost only US$45. The 45cm high, two octave little toy thus became the instrument to deliver 1948 Toy Piano Suite.

Margaret is never far from her toy pianos. She favors music that confronts and defies the established boundaries of the piano and has collaborated with like-minded composers such as Somei Satoh, Tan Dun, Michael Nyman, Julia Wolfe, Toby Twining and Ge Gan-ru; she is also a favorite of composer George Crumb.

Margaret Leng Tan has established herself as a major force within the American avant-garde; a highly visible, talented and visionary pianist whose work sidesteps perceived artificial boundaries within the usual concert experience and creates a new level of communication with listeners. Embracing aspects of theater, choreography, performance and even “props” such as the teapot she “plays” in Alvin Lucier’s Nothing is Real, Margaret has brought to the avant-garde, a measure of good old-fashioned showmanship, tempered with a disciplinary rigor inherited from her mentor John Cage. This has won Tan acceptance far beyond the norm for performers of avant-garde music, as she is

regularly featured at international festivals, often records for adventurous labels such as Mode and New Albion and has appeared on American public television, at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

Joining the Salihara Festival for the first time, Margaret will present Sonic Encounters: The New Piano - An exploration of new possibilities for the piano and toy piano. Works by the famous “Three Cs” - John Cage, Henry Cowell and George Crumb,

along with some other works from the next generation such as Somei Satoh, Toby Twining and Erik Griswold, are also on Margaret’s list to perform.

Festival Salihara (now the third), can be seen as the crème de la crème of Salihara’s curators’ choices, as they put together the best possible from the respective fields and contexts. It is a cornucopia of presentations

and performances, displaying twelve troupes from Indonesia and abroad with world-class quality. This year, the highlights range from a Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim lecture on “freedom and its enemies” to a premiere of “Tan Malaka” – an operatic work by poet Goenawan Mohamad and composer Tony Prabowo. The 3rd Salihara Festival runs from the 23rd September to the 20th October.

INDUSTRI REKAMAN:

LETIH, LELAH, LEMAH, LOYO LAGI LESU

Di masa sekarang, ketika melihat pemandangan toko kaset/cakram digital membludak dilimpahi pengunjung jangan dulu direspons

girang.

Page 43: The Beat Jakarta 23

| 043beatmag.com

[RUDOLF DETHU]

Aquarius Pondok Indah, one of the biggest record stores in Indonesia and located in the South of Jakarta, will soon be closed. The shop, first opened in 1995, has simply run out of business. Mid-August saw them start selling tens of thousands of items in their collection with a massive discount. A few months before that, in February, Aquarius Surabaya, after operating for 7 years, went bankrupt and Aquarius Dago, which used to be one of the coolest hangout spots for kids who lived in Bandung, was shut down in December 2009 after 19 years of guts and glory. Disc Tarra, another national record retail chain, consisting of 78 stores to be precise, is apparently in a similar situation, and although they haven’t closed any of their stores yet, some in significant cities like Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar, have been resized, some down to 50% smaller. This phenomenon, most people believe, is caused by the digital trend. MP3s and iPods have taken over the world. They are more popular than cassettes or cds and walkmans or tape recorders, and piracy is exacerbating the problem. Even the gigantic-size record stores like Virgin have lost the add-on ‘Megastore’ in their title, switching now to become Virgin Store only. Tower Records, once considered a major influential music institution in their hay day, called it a day in 2006. With the many DVD and CD shops that line many of Indonesia’s streets, the Indonesian Government must come up with a strategy to put a stop to piracy and illegal copies. If they fail to do this, the countdown to music armageddon will continue...

What music are you into at the moment? Right now, I’m into all kinds of music, as I always have been — good music which is made with LOVE. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? The first record I bought was from Michael Jackson. Because I wanted to be able to do the “Moonwalk” like Michael did... hehe... What is your all-time favorite album/s? Why? My all-time favorite album is and will always be Grace by Jeff Buckley. It’s just simply amazingly beautiful. The way Jeff sang. The way he wrote the songs. His guitar chords. He was a singer/songwriter and a magician at the same time. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Never did it. Coz I always checked it out before I decided to buy one. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I wanna be the Dalai Lama. Coz he always smiles. What album do you choose to start your weekend? Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall. And song you choose to end your weekend? Ray La Montagne’s Three More Days.

Sandhy is currently on tour promoting his latest self-titled album, which consists of his new songs and his previous releases in Europe.

Setelah terakhir kali merilis album penuh Magnet!

BB’s Bar, Menteng, lokasi dimana pesta diadakan, berubah menjadi lautan manusia. Kafe nan sempit itu ultra kewalahan menampung luapan pengunjung. Konon tak pernah sebelumnya BB’s sampai sebegitu membludak.

Magnet!.

Setelah sebelumnya Petroff (R.I.P.), Alfi Chaniago, Elta Emanuella, Dian Maryana, sempat duduk di kabinet The Upstairs, jajaran birokrasinya di masa sekarang berupa trio: Jimi Multhazam (biduan), Andre “Kubil” Idris (gitar), Beni Adhiantoro (drum), dibantu oleh personel non-tetap yaitu Khrisna (kibor) serta Pandu Fathoni (bas, synth).

Ayo bergegas menyambangi YouTube untuk menyaksikan Menaralara!

Almost a year after releasing their 3rd full-length album Magnet! Magnet!, The Upstairs are back with their newest single and video, Menaralara.

“Going Back To My Roots” – STFU, track yang laris di berbagai lantai dansa.

These two weeks are not that great for machismo and testosterone levels. The camp ‘Madame X’, the weepy ‘Eat Pray Love’, and the super romantic ‘Going the

Distance’ will send most of the straight guys home for more football and beers. Girls, and all those in touch with their most feminine sides, please use www.blitzmegaplex.com to arrange your movie-watching schedule!

MadaMe X

Comedy, Action, Fantasy. Director: Lucky Kuswandi. Writers: Agasyah Karim, Khalid Kashoogi. Cast: Amink, Marcell Siahaan, Ria Irawan, Robby Tumewu, Ikhsan Himawan, Saira Jihan, Vincent Rompies, Titi DJ, Sarah Sechan, Shanty, Fitri Tropica, Joko Anwar.

Cross-dressing Adam, who works in a cheap beauty salon, has to face his destiny to become a superhero(ine) who will defend the weak, the minority groups, and the god-forsaken ones. ‘Madame X” is a kick-ass Indonesian comedy with fresh ideas and hilarious scenes. It may pay a little too much attention to today’s social and political issues, yet the overall movie is great; camp, and entertaining. A good debut by young director, Lucky Kuswandi.

Singkatnya: roman picisan abad 21.

eat Pray Love

Drama, Romance. Director: Ryan Murphy. Writers: Ryan Murphy, Jennifer Salt, Elizabeth Gilbert. Cast: Julia Roberts, I Gusti Ayu Puspawati, Hadi Subiyanto, Christine Hakim, Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup, Violet Davis, James Franco.

memang agak berbahaya bagi derajat ke-macho-an.

What would a woman like Elizabeth Gilbert do to fix her life after a divorce? Move on? Enjoy singlehood? Of course not. She took the most bizarre and illogical way to cope with her life: eating like mad in Italy, praying like there’s no tomorrow in India, and learning about love in Bali. This is the movie version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s popular memoir. Sure, we’re going to see ‘Eat Pray Love’, just because we’re curious about how Hollywood will capture Bali, and how Christine Hakim and other Indonesian talents interact on screen with Julia Roberts. But as for the story? It’s just another chick flick like ‘Sex & The City’, minus the fashion, minus the sexual puns, and plus the “profound insights on the meaning of life and love” … yawn! Now, did I or didn’t I just burn those Paulo Coelho and Deepak Chopra books?

‘Going the Distance’ is as simple as the title. It’s a story of long distance love between Erin (Barrymore) and Garrett (Long), in San Francisco and New York City. This film is our choice for a movie date… friends of Garrett and sister of Erin represent the audience’s voice, who say that such a relationship is impossible. Yet, it is Barrymore and Long’s charm and chemistry that will make us believe they could be the exception.

GoinG the distance

Romance, Comedy. Director: Nanette Burstein. Writer: Geoff LaTulippe. Cast: Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason

Sudeikis, Christina Applegate, Ron Livingstone.

“Going the Distance” adalah sebuah kisah sederhana yang sangat akrab dengan gaya hidup saat ini: kisah cinta jarak jauh (yang sebenarnya tidak jauh-jauh amat!)

Erin (Drew Barrymore) dan Garrett (Justin Long) benar-benar saling terpikat sejak pertemuan pertama mereka.

KEMANG FISH & CHIPS

SHOP

Kemang is an area in Jakarta where there are a lot of things going on at once. You have your boutiques, specialty shops, beauty salons,

cafes, clubs, and of course, restaurants. But I always have a fond memory of this one particular place. I remember going to Kemang Fish & Chips Shop when I was a young boy with my late father. It was in this tiny eatery that my father introduced me to a simple dish called “Fish and Chips”. He told me that it was one of his favorite meals during his travels abroad.Located at Jalan Kemang I, Kemang Fish & Chips Shop has been around since the mid-‘90s. It was then owned by a British expatriate, but about 2 years ago, a local gentleman by the name of Rahadi Arsyad took over. Rahadi spent most of his childhood in Sydney, where he too grew fond

of this simple dish. With his experience working at 5-star hotels in Jakarta and Bali, he runs this place as a ‘labor of love’.

I don’t think it has changed much since the ‘90s. When somebody says ‘lack of

ambience’, another says ‘decidedly simple’. The color blue dominates the room and there are only a handful of tables inside this small restaurant. On a recent lunch visit with a friend, I saw just a couple of small parties of diners and the place looked full. From their conversations, I

Page 59: The Beat Jakarta 23

| 059beatmag.com

could tell that they were long time fans of this establishment. I also saw a good number of people ordering take outs for lunch. And despite the small staff, I can see that they do deliveries as well.

Now about the food. Rahadi told me that the premium quality dory fish are specially imported from Vietnam. But the one thing that I personally love about their fish and chips, is that the potatoes are hand-cut and fried to perfection. No frozen supermarket French fries here! The fish and chips come in three sizes: ‘Admiral Feast’ (48K), ‘Captain’s Meal’ (38K), and for the little ones, ‘Sailor’s Bite’ (28K).

As well as the speciality dish, they also have an Aussie-style Burger (35K), a delicious twist to a traditional hamburger, topped with beetroot and

egg. And in keeping with the Australian theme, their Meat Pie (35K) is also gaining popularity among the customers. To cool off, go for the fresh juices (15K). You can choose between Guava, Strawberry, or Star fruit. But, should you feel like indulging a little bit, try their Milk Shakes (16K) or Thick Shakes (20K). Strawberry, Chocolate, or Vanilla, all full of goodness…

I remember sitting in this small but warm eatery with my father years ago, where he told me unique stories about his overseas travels. And how a simple man like him could forget his (very Indonesian) craving for rice for just a little while, with a simple, tasty meal like fish and chips. Thanks, Dad. I’m having this one in honor of you!

Another traffic jam… It is an all-too-common occurrence in Jakarta. And Jalan Radio Dalam is no exception. It is one of the busiest streets in South Jakarta. But that night, I wasn’t

going to let it get to me. I was quite hungry, so I decided to find myself a place for a bite to eat.

I passed by this roadside food stall so many times, but this was the first time I actually stopped. “Sate Padang Salero Ajo” is a brightly-lit warung located on Jalan Radio Dalam. This place has become the new place to go for some good West Sumatran-style sate in Jakarta. Every time I pass by, I always see quite a number of cars parked nearby and a good amount of customers inside, so I can tell that this is a popular place, which speaks volumes about the food.

sate

As I entered, the fragrant smoky smell of grilled meat and the aroma of the spices welcomed me. I ordered one portion, and although the place was packed, in less than five minutes the skillful staff brought me ten sticks of Sate Padang with some ketupat (rice cake) on a plate topped with banana leaf. A blanket of yellow-brown sauce and a dash of fried shallots add color and texture and only heighten my anticipation of this wonderful dish.

For those that don’t know exactly what Sate Padang is, Wikipedia explains it well: “Sate Padang is a dish from Padang and the surrounding area in West Sumatra, which is made from cow or goat offal boiled in spicy broth then grilled. Its main characteristic is a yellow sauce made from rice flour, mixed with spicy offal broth, turmeric, ginger, garlic, coriander, galangal root, cumin, curry powder and salt.” And believe me, this one is one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The meat is tender, and the sauce has just the right amount of kick. The right blend of herbs and spices, not just chilis, is the key here. For Rp 15,000, you’ve got a great deal for your dollar here! If you feel like it, try the spicy cassava crackers (2K) and dip them in the sauce for a yummy accompaniment.

Sate Padang Salero Ajo was featured in a main national newspaper recently. It is the brainchild of Asril Tanjung, a native of Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. He actually started his business in the mid-‘70s but after a small setback in 1998 during the political rioting, he decided to rebuild from scratch. After helping with his brother’s stall (Ajo Ramon, another popular Sate Padang place at Pasar Santa), Asril reopened his warung in its current location in January 2008. Business has been good ever since. And to keep up with the times, he even created Sate Padang Salero Ajo an e-mail and Facebook account!

The traffic has eased a bit. With a happy tummy, it was time for me to go home. But not before I ordered another portion, to go. I just can’t get enough!

There have been whispers for quite some time that Lanvin would be the next design house to collaborate with Swedish retailer H&M,

although the news was not confirmed until this fortnight. Speculation suggests that this will be one of the best design collaborations from H&M, though we don’t want to belittle those with Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, Comme des Garçons and Sonia Rykiel. Still, we couldn’t help but feel excited upon hearing the news! This collection will be designed by Lanvin’s artistic director, Alber Elbaz, and menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver, and will be released on 23rd November in around 200 H&M stores worldwide. The good news is that the design collaboration will include both womenswear and menswear. A

preview of the collection will be available on 2nd November via a special film available at www.hm.com.Alber Elbaz’s comment on the collaboration was: “H&M approached us to collaborate, and see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less. I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public. This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world.”

Check out the H&M Facebook fan’s page for a video link about the new collection. By Amalia, Editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

A little birdie told us that the new Chloé Eau De Parfumes will finally launch in Indonesia at the end of next month. We’re excited, because

somehow, Chloe scents never fail to emanate the aura of feminine chic that most of us are dying to have. It embodies a nonchalant attitude and individuality, that is unique to each woman. The new scent from Chloé is described as a fresh

As for the scent, you could not expect anything far from feminine with a twist here. There’s a classic scent of rose, which turns into

something translucent and warm, at the same time playful and seductive. The duo of perfumers, Michel Almairac and Amandine Marie worked together to give birth to Chloé’s beguiling, liberated essence through a combination of floral powdery notes, hints of peony, lychee and springtime freesia. Here’s what they said about the Chloé fragrance:“The scent is young, fresh and romantic. It’s something that will always be in style.”- Clémence Poésy, Actress.“The Chloé fragrance is very sexy, floral and unique. It’s modern, romantic, fresh and light - it is for every Chloé woman, yet it feels personal at the same time.”- Anja Rubik, Model. “I’ve been collecting vintage Chloé pieces for years – there is something soft and very pretty, gorgeous and not too precious about them. The fragrance feels very similar; it’s almost edible, it’s beautiful – I keep on smelling it and taking it in, and I love the bottle; it feels nice in your hand.”- Chloë Sevigny, Actress.

and feminine fragrance suited to a free spirit with an utterly innate sense of chic. Because Chloé wants to portray rich and varied personalities, they chose three women to represent the Chloé spirit. Although they differ as individuals, they share the same self-assurance, energy and irreverence, balanced by a natural beauty and elegance.

sensual side of rose is revealed much later as the flirtatious head notes drift away. The rose is accompanied by heady magnolia and lily of the valley, as well as a subtle scent of warm amber and elegant cedarwood.

Chloé will be formally launched at Sogo Plaza Senayan on 24th-28th October, with the 50ml available for Rp 995,000 and the 75ml for Rp 1,250,000.

Entang Wiharso’s solo exhibition can be considered a large scale presentation in more ways than one as it features 20 works of art,

many of which are of king-sized proportions. The works featured consist of oil paintings, water paint pieces, art installations, interior art installations and videos.

The name of the exhibition is taken from one of Entang Wiharso’s works of the same name which depicts the paradox of a loving relationship; foretelling how a passionate relationship can develop into feelings of possession and how this emotion envelops into a desire to dominate. Through this masterpiece Entang expresses how love can become a person’s weakness and also how this emotion can bring out the animal rage of a person as well.

Many of the installments in this exhibition feature how the power of a simple emotion, in this case the feeling of love, can bring out many other different emotions in an individual. Through this

exhibition, Entang tries to employ a social message regarding authority, criticizing on how a small group can overpower a larger mass of people or a community.

Through years of artistic experience, Entang has developed his understanding of the realm of art and according to his perspective has found the meaning of art. In his own words, Entang states “Expressing art is rooted from emotion, combined with a sensibility influenced by reason and esthetic sensitivity. This has the capacity to ascend through ones morals and ethics.”

Entang’s upcoming solo exhibition curated by Jim Supangkat titled “Love Me Or Die” will be held at Galeri Nasional Indonesia from 21st of October to 31st October.

It’s strange that the defining of an FDJ (Female DJ) on many advertisements for events up until today is still done in this modern liberal age of women’s emancipation. The announcement of an FDJ is meant as a selling point as many guys are sure to head to a place with a woman spinning on the decks compared to the opposite sex. DJ’s of Indonesia are uniting to rid this sexist divide and hope that all DJ’s be them male or female will not be judge by their sex and be respected based on their skills.

You now feel a strong pull towards something new and different in your life. Not only do you have a better chance of success, but the fun and enthusiasm is infectious. If you are given a chance be sure to make the most of it, with dedication you'll have success. A newcomer may stir your interest in a particular subject or will reignite an old flame. If you are determined to make your mark and impress others, take care of your image. If you have been feeling emotionally neglected or physically isolated, expect the void to be filled. You are emerging from an emotional cloud and, with Venus in your sign, will enjoy harmony and happiness. Something that was not to your liking could take on a new slant, when you realise the full potential of the offer.

There may be an urge to live in the moment and be less inclined to worry about trivial issues. You will be happiest when you feel loved and needed, hence you should mix with people who hold you in high regard. Present time will boost your ego and enthusiasm, and a venture you start will be both successful and satisfying. If you feel young at heart, it suggests that a night out is the ideal setting for locking eyes with your lover. The energy is fairly light-hearted and you will fare better if you skim the surface of the situation. Creativity and colours are sure to grab your eye and you will do something wonderful with them. If you feel emotionally isolated or physically tried, indulge yourself and nurture your own needs.

Uncertainty and delays have several advantages, they finally enable you to get to the bottom of complex problem. Your wisdom and foresight can be used in positive ways by passing on advice to others or avoiding past mistakes. A twist of fate or common sense decision helps to make your life easier or happier. If you've been bewildered about something or someone, you'll feel more certain about what action to take. Your self-awareness is finely tuned and you have the ability to pull ideas, resolutions and tactics out of the air. You will want to get ahead and will figure quick and clever ways to get around things. Take your time when it comes to making important decisions, as you will need to be comfortable with the outcome.

You may discover that your suspicions, fears or worries were unfounded and your anxiety levels will plummet. Pause and reflect on aspects of your life that need to be developed or improved. It may be time to mention something that you've been keeping to yourself. You will be feeling stronger and more able to communicate. Your intuition will be spot-on, so use it to sort out any issues that have recently held you back, or confused you. A window of opportunity is about to open, allowing you to expand on an idea or network with new people. There may be some doubters to deal with, but you will put forward a convincing plan or argument. People you enjoy spending time with bring you out of your shell and validate the choices you made.

Financially, no matter how much opposition there may be to your ideas, you will persevere and succeed in achieving your ways. A perfect time to examine financial and investment strategies and review situations. Respectively, you have a chance to put your talent and intelligence to the test in boosting your financial income. There is a lot of interesting and invigorating information available to you to build up on your finances. Follow your financial instincts without being distracted, as something exciting could happen to influence an important financial decision. Your changeable attitude and ability to see how fortunes are being made will lead to very successful decisions.

Don’t let emotional matters hold you back. Focus on where the money is and how you can make more of it. A sudden change in a partnership may surprise you, but the end result will be to your advantage. Refine your thoughts, review current obligations and consult with close ones about future financial situations. Financially stop talking about what you want to do and start doing things to increase your wealth. Use this period to study situations that can open new doors to opportunities for you financially. Your ideas will be on grand scale, but your means and abilities to carry them out may not be enough. Don’t make a commitment just yet. You will discover that you are worth more and may be able to get the same results on your own.

You'll be highly tuned to the material world and you will also have a greater awareness of your body's needs at this time. This period begins with you resolving to make more money and achieve more success, but not until you've had a chance to bargain-hunt. Financial goals can be reached with some planning. An urge to own things, rather than rent or window shop is growing stronger. Material issues come to the forefront and the message is you must be shrewd to succeed. Material comfort and personal happiness will be high on your list of priorities, and the more monotonous chores should be put on the backburner. You can expect to have the last laugh when slowly but surely others warm to your plans.

This is your time to shine and there will be more money coming your way to support your plans and goals. You might opt for a mini-makeover or break or seek out that promotion, pay increase or luxury purchase. Financially, you'll need to draw the line with a special occasion or gift before it gets out of control. It is a period that is filled with many exciting and wonderful opportunities. Be prepared to grab success and ride it into the future with enthusiasm. You'll be in a money-making mode. If you follow through, the accomplishment you make will be lucrative. Planets usher in many wonderful opportunities, though you need to pick and choose with care. You should get the financial ball rolling now or you could miss out on an opportunistic investment, income boost or creative enterprise.

Perfect time for catching up on old email or other messages that need replies. Every now and then you need to just clear them all away, even if that means just deleting and forgetting about them. It's a good time to sit down and rethink recent developments. Your ability to focus is strong and you ought to be able to figure out a few new angles that will make you glad you spent the time. Your opinions are hardly set in stone, though you do like to see hard evidence before changing your mind -- that is to say, you're eminently sensible. You meet someone new who turns you around on some subject. Emails are efficient and convenient, but the best way to get across a message is still to talk it out in person.

You've plenty to say right now and exactly the right words to say it. It's a great time to communicate your needs to whom ever is at hand -- they are much more likely to be receptive to your needs. You may need to make a few calls or send a few emails to track down that one person you need to reach. If it's a long-lost relative, you may surprise your family with your tenacity and resourcefulness! Your way with words is quite powerful now and you may find it much simpler to communicate your feelings and ideas, especially if you take a bit of time to focus your thoughts before proceeding. Try not to let other people interfere with your plans -- as long as you are able to express yourself clearly, you should be able to get your way.

A softening of your stance or views helps you see someone in a more positive light. You are among the lucky one, you may cash in on someone's absence, blunder or cancelled deal. Because you are in an affable life cycle, there will be no malice in information exchanged or passed on to others. Start by discussing your concerns and follow up with direct action. Planet is about to impact positively on relationships. An opportunity may present itself and while you are realistic about the temporary nature of it, you will be powerless to resist. Contact with someone you've been struggling to stay in touch with will open communication lines. You are in a caring sharing cycle and rather than shooting from the hip, you will wisely consult with others before making major decisions.

Romance and love relationships are strongly favoured this period and you can make use of the awareness that surrounds you to enhance your love life. Show them some sensitivity and generosity and they will do the same for you if the tables are turned. Do as you would be done to. Nothing is more important to you than a fillip of gossip and you seek the company of people who share your gift of gab. Now is not the time to procrastinate, but to take action and work on your plans and ideas for excellent results. A trip will take you to a place that will inspire you to move forward with financial plans that you have been contemplating. A certain amount of travel is indicated and something that you have been longing for will happen at this time. Your persuasive ability will help you gain the support you need. A trip will lead to someone from your past.

You could rub others the wrong way if you come on too strong in your dealings. Offer respect, despite disagreement, to a mate whose point of view isn’t congruent with your own. A discussion about ideals seems confusing at first, but eventually you achieve greater clarity. No need to rush and stay flexible in discussions, remember no need to get hot with words. Your combined energies should turn to other topics, particularly related to travel or study. You may be sensitive or reactive to the words of others, so choose your company wisely. Stick to light conversation and avoid being drawn into discussions of delicate topics. Try to steer clear of sensitive people and situations and any form of emotional drama.

You may be more resourceful and observant, but should be cautious about crossing the boundaries of courtesy. Expect the adrenaline to be pumping as you make decisions on the run or talk your way out of tricky situations. You could be inclined to say too much or exaggerate events, but most people will enjoy your flamboyant ways. The planets are causing some ups and downs and you will need to find clever ways of solving problems. Keep your ear to the ground and you’ll pick up valuable clues; there may be a situation where you’re not always in the loop.Insensitive comments or hurtful criticism could cut deep and will either damage a relationship or make you try harder.

When placed on the spot, you should have no trouble coming up with clever responses. It will be easier to organize your routines, schedule and keep track of appointments and events. You have the communication skills to express your feelings without coming across as overly sensitive. Whether you are playing the role of peacemaker or nurturer, others are likely to hang on your every word. The barriers that have prevented good communication between you and a friend or family member will be lifted. Fortunately, you have natural charm and a way with words that should help captivate those you encounter. Present onward motion allows you to reaffirm plans, pick up where you left off in a relationship, or reassess goals.

It would be a good idea to speed up talks involving a transaction or changeover - so that you can get a clearer perspective. Keep all your options open and watch for subtle signs along the way. Try to blend into the background. Whenever you are in doubt, follow your instincts and heed advice from the people around you. You may come up with innovative ideas that will be adopted by friends and colleagues. You will achieve more by being wily and agreeable than challenging people with your ideas or opinions. This would be a good time to settle down for long talks where the details will be brought into clear focus. You are likely to be one step ahead, anticipating events and making snap decisions on important issues.

You will have an inbuilt sense of right and wrong, which should come in useful when dealing with matters of the heart. Someone may turn to you for advice and your wisdom will prove invaluable. You’ll pursue a personal interest that is close to your heart; stay grounded if you want to do this earnestly. Rather than making your usual matter-of-fact decisions, you’re more inclined to act impulsively and speak from the heart. Some may consider you single-minded but if you have a good idea or a strategy is working, there is no reason for change. A choice or sense of obligation may weigh heavily on your mind but you will ultimately do the right thing by everyone. The power of positive thought is your greatest asset.

A choice or sense of obligation may weigh heavily on your mind but you will ultimately do the right thing by everyone. Where logic has failed, you may now decide to follow your heart. You will soon feel more relaxed and peaceful. The planets sharpen your senses and provide insight into a situation that has puzzled you for some time. The power lies in your hands, the challenge is to use it wisely in matters of heart and conscience. A hobby will be personally rewarding. Your goals get back on track and you’ll have plenty of gusto. You have a better handle on the situation and are clear in your own mind about your feelings and expectations. Affairs of the heart should take priority over other matters.

Capricorn

Feb 19 – March 20 Jan 21 - Feb 18 Dec 22 - Jan 20

If you’ve been at odds with someone, your efforts at reconciliation will go swimmingly. Everything will be copasetic between you and a loved one if you’re open with each other. Do not make plans or attempt to put ideas into operation without first consulting your partner. By looking at life from the point of view of others, it will bring a happier relationship. If you can learn to compromise or treat others as equals, life will become even more harmonious. Just be careful that you do not cross the line between being helpful and intruding in someone’s life. There will be less need to compromise in a partnership and more opportunity to express your feelings. You have the power to bolster someone’s confidence.

The key is to take events in your stride and where necessary, take the senior role in a partnership. Others will appreciate your sincere efforts. Start as you mean to continue in a relationship, business venture or routine and you will have the basis for a successful outcome. If there has been unresolved tension in a relationship, make an effort to clear the air and start afresh. If you recently lost faith in someone you thought you knew well, perhaps it’s a good time to re-establish trust. Remember to treat others as equals especially if you expect understanding and fairness from them. A serious approach will win you points and buy you time. A chance to develop something that will help others is looking very positive.

The positive way to work with your energy is to take the next step towards empowerment in your own life. This has a wonderful effect on people around you. Whether others are relying on you in a personal or professional sense, your knowledge and expertise stands you in good stead throughout. If you are concerned about your reputation, status or social popularity, bear in mind that first impressions will count the most. You will find it easier to tackle that daunting task or reach an amicable compromise, and all should be well. Others may rely on you to pick up the slack but you will happily oblige for the good of a common cause. Work issues and your reputation come into sharper focus, so be aware of your image and actions.

This is the time to become more concerned about the outcome of things, as this will get your creative juices flowing and teach you how to simply go with the flow. By large, you are in an extremely fertile period and you are poised to bring a new personal or professional interest to fruition. This is the time your career insights will be revealed - you will be able to act on situations to bring great success to achieving your goals. Everything may appear to be running smoothly and as long as you concentrate on work and getting along with colleagues, things should be fine. You will be able to go back to work and will be able to handle your responsibilities because you feel the world is your oyster and your goals are not pipe dreams, but are workable, viable plans.

Your input will be invaluable and the bonus will be that the more you give out, the better you will feel about yourself. The good news is that you will be given a second chance and the missing pieces of a puzzle should fall into place. Life works in mysterious ways and a coincidence or twist in circumstances could be a turning point for you. You are soon to enter your zone of expansion, you are about to emerge from self-imposed exile and socialize more. Different people and situations will mean different things to you. Each have their own merit and are worth devoting time to. You possess a new inner strength and will be heartened by positive feedback from friends and loved ones. It may seem contrived, but you must play the role others expect of you.

You will thrive in a supportive environment but may feel out of your depth in unfamiliar situations. Someone you connect with in the near future could be the catalyst for a fresh start. You may be pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback you receive from friends and family members. Surprisingly, you are likely to derive great joy from helping people resolve personal issues and engaging in healthy debates. Increased energy flow or an unexpected helping hand could come at an opportune moment. The hope factor is high, making you unusually optimistic about your chance for success in a personal or business venture. Helping others will bring the highest rewards. Be generous in a practical way and everyone, including you, will prosper.

Bali’s Spring CleaningOn the 20th of September, a total of 31 non-Government organizations got down and dirty cleaning up 19 spots around the island of Bali, reaching from the most northern tip of the island down to the southern point. It was a much needed sweep up as education is still needed in keeping Bali a beautiful island void of human scraps and garbage. Loads of trash was collected though, mainly consisting of plastics that have been recklessly discarded by ignorant people. Hopefully we’re all able to head towards a cleaner Bali as more people realize the importance of keeping the environment free of waste that cannot break down naturally. Nunie from the Rotary Club in Nusa Dua said: “We need to return the island to its once clean and serene state,” and also said that the event was part of a larger campaign which would also introduce organic waste tanks. “A simple way to manage our waste.”

As the Sun Sets…Being on the West you’re on the right side of the island when it comes to watching the sun sink into the ocean, so why not watch the show from a perfect location? Here are a few spots well worth visiting at the end of the day…

1. Rock Bar Quickly becoming one of the most talked about bars on the island, The Rock Bar slid onto the sunset scene last year and stole the show with its incredible location. At the base of a cliff and seeming to hover just out of reach of the crashing ocean waves, it boasts a beautiful view out to sea and further around the coastline, making it a perfect sunset spot and well worth the drive out through the Jimbaran area. There’s a huge selection of cocktails available along with light food and if you’re after a meal, being part of the Ayana resort means there are restaurants available to move on to also. Due to the popularity of this spot though, don’t be surprised if it’s packed out when you get there so be prepared to wait your turn for the inclinator! The way the Rock Bar is lit up at night is also well worth checking out so if you’ve missed sunset, you still won’t be disappointed...

2. Klapa If you’d prefer to be further up the cliff face, Klapa is the place to be. In a beautiful area of rolling hills, white sandy beaches and beautiful turquoise-colored water with perfect surf, this is a great spot to watch the sun sink into the ocean as you sip away at a cocktail from one of the bars, the large outdoor area or the infinity edged pool. You’ll feel like a million dollars wherever you choose to kick back. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights see home bands and DJ’s giving the place a smooth soundtrack to suit the occasion and there are plenty of big events to keep your ears posted for.

3. Envy Head down to Holiday Inn Baruna Resort and you’ll find this fantastic restaurant right on the beach and open to the public. Open from 11am ‘til midnight, there’s plenty of time to stop by for some food and an ocean view but the magic moment is definitely as the fiery ball weighs heavy in the sky. Resident DJ’s Nanda and Buche get their grooves into play from 5:30 daily except for Tuesday which sees an acoustic show by live band Cakrawala Akustik. This is also a great place to bring the kids as you can supervise them on the sand while you relax at one of the outdoor tables.

4. Double Six Beach If you want to stick to the Seminyak area and feel the vibe of a beach busy with locals and tourists alike, head down to Double Six beach and grab yourself a chair to laze back in. The beach is packed with vendors selling drinks and food and there are plenty of restaurants behind the beach to widen your options. There are also plenty of activities available such as surfboard hire if you feel like being active. Otherwise ‘people watching’ is generally the chosen sport. You may get hassled to buy jewelry or sunglasses a little more than you like but it comes with the territory. For something slightly quieter, head to the left for the same views at the Padma section of the beach.

Opening its doors on April 16th of this year, the New York Sports Bar and Diner couldn’t have chosen a more optimum

time to kick things off, due to the onslaught of football fans (or ‘soccer’ fans, for any non-British readers out there) that overtook Bali’s bars this summer, all hunting for the biggest screen and the coldest beverage.

With a Mudslide Milkshake in my mitts (25K), made from chocolate ice cream, syrup, fresh cream and Oreo Cookies no less, I sit in a red leather booth surrounded by an array of sporting memorabilia and the sweaty, determined faces of legends such as Babe Ruth and the Manchester United squad. The booth seats seem so American to somebody who has never set foot in the country, and whether

FROM FRANK SINATRA TO JAY Z AND ALICIA KEYS, EVERYBODY HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS. BUT WHAT WOULD BALI’S TAKE ON THE BIG APPLE BE LIKE? TOSCA HEADED TO THE DISCOVERY SHOPPING MALL TO FIND OUT…

it’s like this there in reality or not, I’m quite caught up in the novelty of it all. Having said that, there is nothing ‘novelty’ or superficial about the bar itself. It’s been finished to a very high standard, and has achieved the balance between themed sports bar and something classier rather well. It really is heaven for somebody who wants some quality food in a cool, comfortable environment and to take in some serious sporting action. Because you’re never going to miss a second of the action in this place. If you haven’t parked yourself in front of one of the pull-down big screens for special events such as the World Cup games, then practically every other seat in the house has a flat screen TV mounted on the wall nearby. Running low on your beer? Not a problem – keep watching on one of the three TVs behind the bar.

I arrived here shortly before sunset, and was surprised to see that NYSBD is a massive missed opportunity for sunset-worshippers. A spacious outdoor seating area, just down from sister venue Oceans 27, overlooks Kuta Beach at the southern end and is a prime location to catch the last oranges, pinks and purples of the day. Including this outdoor area, the seating capacity here is 150, making it a great place for a function of any kind.

Perusing the menu, I see all kinds of snack and tapas style foods – the perfect accompaniments for watching the sport on screen, which ranges from the everyday (rugby) to the bizarre (arm wrestling). Remarking on this to Chef Rio Nadjamuddin, I point out that I wasn’t aware arm-wrestling was popular enough to be televised, and I’m told that arm wrestling, along with yoyo competitions and hot-dog eating contests are all going to be adding to the competitive nature of the bar in the not-too-distant future, when participants can win prizes, and, I imagine, provide some pretty funny free entertainment for the other patrons.

My conversation with Rio then turns to the food. Rio provides a splash of authenticity to the cuisine here, as although Borneo-born, he spent several years living in New York and working as a cook there. And although the menu features many things you can find elsewhere, such as burgers, pork ribs and pies, he warns me not to expect the norm… everything here is homemade. And when Rio says “everything”, he really means everything. From the burger patties and desserts, right down to the bread used for the burger buns, it’s all done in-house. Impressive.

Tempted by the Build Your Own Burger option, we eventually opt for the New York Burger instead (52K) and the Chile Con Carne (65K), followed by Key Lime Pie (20K). Immaculately presented, the Burger comes literally stacked with fillings and is 100% meat, with none of the other stomach-turning unmentionables that you often find padding out the burgers of other outlets. I soon find that trying to list the contents of this meal is an exercise in how long you can hold your breath for. Stuffed in there with the juicy, medium-

grilled meat, is bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion, with sides of fries, coleslaw and lightly battered onion rings. And it tastes gooood. Turning my attention to the Chile con Carne, I find that once again, Rio was right. It doesn’t taste the same as your run-of-the-mill Chile – it has a real kick, packed with extra fruity heat, and is served with every Mexican topping you can think

of, such as cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream and nachos. Luckily for me, our Beat photographer doesn’t seem to possess a single sweet tooth, so it’s up to me to polish off the homemade Key Lime Pie, which is zesty and refreshing on the palette, complemented by the scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Completely full, I waddle out feeling even more guilty for eating so much when I pass the unwavering gazes of so many fit and healthy sporting stars. I decide to head to the nearest sports shop for that new pair of training shoes. It’s a start at least…
