Another was Humphrey Bogart, perhaps the best of the early film stars. Singers Annie Lennox, Dido, and Alannah Myles were all born on Christmas Day. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at Bela-Bela didnot erect shacks behind the town’s municipal offices, despite vowing to do so during the December holidays. Before the official start of the festive season the political

party’s coordinator Neo Moloko and convener, SelloMosweu said that they plan to erect as many as 50 shacksdue to Extension 8 residents being evicted by the Red Antsin June last year. Moloko said that the EFF planned to erectshacks to accommodate some of those who were lefthomeless due to that incident and blamed the localgovernment for not making provisions.“Since these evictions, no provision has been made for

these people, and only ANC supporters are now livingthere,” he said. The BEAT received a copy of the referendum from the

EFF which had allegedly been sent to the town’s mayor,Lucas Nhlapo. The referendum demanded that, among others, Nhlapo

apologise unconditionally on behalf of himself and theMunicipality for “all the suffering that was caused duringthe last evictions which took place by the Red Ants inExtension 8”.

It was further demanded that Nhlapo should providealternative land for those who were evicted and that theywill be prioritized above anybody else together with atimeline of when that will take place as there are still quite anumber of households homeless as a result of the evictions. The referendum further demands that Nhlapo will ensure

that no further land evictions will be implemented under hiswatch unless alternative land had first been provided forthose currently living on the land to relocate to, and 14 daysmust be allocated for them to relocate to the alternativeland.Nhlapo was requested to reply to these demands in

Salusoord greendespite waterrestrictions

Water sprayers are running at Salusoord atBela-Bela despite the fact that waterrestrictions are currently in effect. Most of the people who live in Salusoord

are pensioners or municipal employees. The water restrictions, which were put in

place by municipal manager MorrisMaluleka, forbid the use of garden hosesand sprayers. Residents are only allowed towash their cars using buckets of water, andschools need to apply to the municipality towater their sports fields.Fines of R1 500 may be assessed on

residents in violation of the restrictions, ortheir water may be cut off.The reason for the water restrictions are

the water shortages which took place in thearea in 2015.Reporters from The BEAT’s sister paper

Die Pos visited Salusoord on Tuesday, 5January, where they saw at least threehosepipe sprayers going full steam. Theowners of the residences were not at home.A source told the reporters that certain

residents leave their sprayers running allthrough the day while they are at work.Although these residents have beenreported to the municipality, officials havenot yet come out to remonstrate with theoffending residents. The reporters managed to discover that the

units where the sprayers run constantly, allegedly belong to the municipalemployees.A representative of the municipal manager

said that the message about the waterrestrictions was clearly communicated andanybody who sees another person misusingwater should report the offenderimmediately.

The new year has arrived!2016 is here, and while nobody is going to

say that all your baggage from 2015 andbefore should suddenly grow wings and flyaway, a new year is always a chance tostart, more or less, from fresh.

It’s a chance to reinvent yourself, to be abetter person than you were last year.

New Year’s Resolutions are a good way ofdoing that. Make a little list of things youplan to do in 2016. It can be big things: “Iam going to finish my novel! I am going todo a course in Engineering! I am going toread 100 books this year!” or it can besmaller things: “I am going to stopsmoking! I am going to lose weight!” It caneven be things that are completelyintangible: “I am going to be kinder. I amgoing to be wiser. I am going to be braver.”

The last three there, they’re veryimportant. We should all strive to be wise, and to be kind, and to be brave. They’re thethree things most likely to make the world abetter place.

We should strive to be kind in our dealingswith other people, other races, and otherreligions. We should strive to be kind tothose less fortunate, to those who are

A new page

different, and to those who are strange. Weshould strive to be kind in small ways everyday, and in big ways when the opportunitypresents (and the opportunity will present,if you are looking). We should strive to be wise, and know that

‘different’ does not mean evil. We shouldstrive for wisdom and know that life is not azero-sum game — If you have more, thatdoes not mean that I have less. We shouldstrive to be wise, and remember that life ismore strange and wonderful than we canever imagine. We should strive to be brave, and be a

voice for those who cannot speak up forthemselves. We should strive to be brave, and stand up to oppression, no matter whatface it wears. We should strive to be brave, and stand between the innocent and thedarkness.Nobody can be kind all the time, or wise

all the time, or brave all the time. Everyonehas their moments when they wonderwhether it’s really worth all the effort. But when you make your lists of

resolutions for 2016, remember these threethings. Trying to hold to these resolutions, even if you do not always succeed, is thebest path to being a better person.Best wishes and good luck for 2016 from

The BEAT.
