1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

March 1, 2020

Page 2: Stella Maris...2020/03/01  · Books are available. Any questions, contact Jason Vaughan 843-883-3044. FIRST LENTEN SOUP AND SANDWICH EVENING Sponsored by the Stella Maris Women’s

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people,

This Wednesday at 6:15 we celebrate our first Stations, Soups and Sandwiches for Lent of 2020. We pray the Stations of the Cross at 6:15, then adjourn to the Hall for a light supper at which there will be baskets for cash donations for those in need. At one fell swoop, we can pray, fast, and give alms. For this Wednesday, we look forward to soups and sandwiches provided by our Women’s Club.

Please remember this Friday, like all Fridays of Lent, is a day of abstinence from meat. Mother Church encourages voluntary acts of penitence, especially on all Fridays, made holy as the day on which Christ died on the cross.

Something ancient, something new: We are blessed with many young families and it is heartening to see them engaged in the faith, wanting the best for their children. This coming Saturday evening, a group is sponsoring a “St. Joseph’s Party” from 6:30-8:30 in the Sedes Sapientiæ, our building at 1112 Middle Street. There, I will bless a Saint Joseph altar and attendees can learn about the St. Joseph altar and how to erect one in the home. Also materials for a domestic novena (nine days of prayer) will be available for families to pray at home on the days leading to the Feast of St. Joseph (March 19). The tradition of the St. Joseph altars is very strong in Italian culture and is a place to gather food for others and celebrate the saint who provided for the Holy Family. Over the years, you have heard me quote one of my professors who once set out to study the survival of Judaism, always a minority religion, frequently persecuted. His conclusion was that domestic ritual had been a key to Judaism’s ability to endure. The Sabbath observance, Passover and other rituals are centered in the home and the family. Please do consider this devotion to St. Joseph for your family. It’s been around a long time, but is new to us as a parish.

Friday of this week is First Friday. This means the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar all night Thursday (Nocturnal Adoration). Eucharistic adoration is a rich, quiet form of prayer, sometimes it just mean being with the Lord substantially present under the appearance of bread. I urge people to try it. Bring something spiritual to read, if you like, or quietly make the Stations of the Cross on your own, but mainly just be there. I think you will find it a very peaceful hour and a good Lenten devotion. If you plan to attend, please sign up for an hour on the list in the vestibule of the church. Don’t let modesty keep you from signing your name; it helps the priests know which hours are well-covered and which might need us to be there.

And, finally, a first for this column: does anyone who knits have any leftover remnants of yarn? We have a parishioner who uses them to make small lap blankets and no longer has a source. If so, please drop them off at our parish office.

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY

Join us for Sunday Scripture study. We meet from 10:30 to 11:20am in the front room of the Sedes Sapientiæ (small white cottage across the street from the church). We will be studying the Acts of the Apostles. Books are available. Any questions, contact Jason Vaughan 843-883-3044.

FIRST LENTEN SOUP AND SANDWICH EVENING Sponsored by the Stella Maris Women’s Club

Stations of the Cross will begin at 6:15pm Wednesday, March 4th, followed by a soup and sandwich supper in the parish hall. Women of the parish are asked to cater the event. Sandwiches and soups should be brought to the hall before the start of the Stations of the Cross. Please put your name on crock pots, ladles, or any plates you may bring, and pick up your dishes and pots after the meal or the next day. Please, NO DESSERTS. It is Lent. If you wish to include your recipes, we would love to have them.

STELLA MARIS WOMEN’S CLUB

The Stella Maris Women’s Club will meet on Tuesday, March 3rd; refreshments 6:30-7:00pm followed by our speaker Anita Ibbott, and then a short business meeting. Anna’s talk, “Stations of the Cross – Can We Follow Jesus in His Footsteps to the Cross?” will be a perfect mini Lenten Retreat. We hope to see ALL women of the parish and bring your friends.

BIRTHRIGHT For Mothers and Newborns

This Lent, we have a donation bin for Birthright in the parish hall. Please bring mom and baby items (large maternity clothes, newborn diapers, wipes, onesies, crib sheets, towels and rash ointment) and put them in the bin for families in need. A full list is located in the bin. Thank you.

COLLECTION FOR THOSE IN NEED... NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

The St. Vincent de Paul society will be accepting donations after all Masses on March 7th and 8th. Your offerings are carefully used to help those in the parish and local area in need of temporary assistance. Please call our confidential helpline, or encourage others who may need assistance to do so. Our number is 843-814-1229. In addition, we have flyers in the back of the church and hall explaining more of how we can help. Thank you for your past support which has been a blessing to so many.

CELEBRATE ST. JOSEPH

Stella Maris families are invited to celebrate Saint Joseph, one of the great saints and patron of the Universal Church! In accordance with the ancient Sicilian tradition, food will be brought to St. Joseph’s altar in the Sedes Sapientiæ (1112 Middle Street) on Saturday, March 7th, to enjoy in his honor. Families will be given materials to celebrate his feast day in their homes including a Novena; there will be games, arts & crafts, a scavenger hunt and escape room as well as food, wine and soft drinks. This is a free event but you need to RSVP to Ann at the parish office at 843-883-3108. (Hosted by Catholic Young Adults of Charleston.)
