from the PrincipalDear Stella Community,Stella Day Today as a school community we celebrate Stella Day and there is much to give thanks for. This year we remember the founding of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan 160 years ago and celebrate our Stella Maris College community, 86 years in existence. We are grateful for the gift that the Sisters of the Good Samaritan have given us by founding this school community on the northern beaches of Sydney based on the Benedictine Good Samaritan values of peace and justice, hospitality, community and stewardship. Now as the only girls’ Catholic school on the peninsula, we continue to work with young women who will make a difference in the world, our Stella Girls.
Thank you to the many students and staff who help make Stella Day a success including the Student Representative Council led by Charlotte Mackenzie and Indiana Garlick, Ms Blaikie and Ms Metcalfe. Thanks, too, to the Mission Team and the Performing Arts staff and students who made the morning liturgies such meaningful events for the girls. Community days such as these are important in building a connected school, where all students know they have an opportunity to contribute and belong.
Remembering the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum In a recent article in The Good Oil, the e-magazine of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, an interview was posted with Garigarra Mundine, a descendent of the Wiradjuri/Bundjulang/Kamilaroi and Gumbayngirr nations and a former student of St Scholastica’s College, Glebe. In the interview Garigarra discussed the campaign to achieve recognition of Indigenous Peoples in the Australian Constitution.
When asked if she was hopeful of what the future can bring for Indigenous Australians and for the country as a whole, Garigarra’s answer was a positive one. Garigarra replied, “Oh yeah, I really am hopeful. I’ve been lucky enough to be selected as one of the ACT’s representatives for the National Indigenous Youth Parliament to be held in Canberra during Reconciliation Week. Young Indigenous leaders are coming from all around the country to share ideas and hopes for the future. Funding Update The NCEC has released an Inquiry into the Australian Education Amendment Bill 2017. It calls on the government to consider measures such as replacing the use of the SES with a more precise measure of capacity to contribute and reviewing the indexation increases after 2020.
At the same time, the Broken Bay Catholic Schools Office Director of Schools, Peter Hamill, has informed parents in the local systemic schools that this government decision will have an impact on their schools. Local Catholic schools have had significant fee increases and face additional increases over the next ten years. The federal government decision will change the nature of education in Australia in the future.

World’s Greatest Shave
Vanessa Morgan, Year 12 made the brave decision to shave off her curly locks to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation.
Vanessa independently raised over $2500 and our community gathered to cheer her on as they witnessed the shave on Tuesday during lunch. We are proud of Vanessa’s courageous, compassionate heart!

Stella Maris College is an independent girls’ college founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan in 1931. The school operates as part of Good Samaritan Education and our sister schools include St Scholastica’s, Rosebank, Mount St Benedict, Mater Dei and Lourdes Hill. The College offers an outstanding secondary education with a diverse and flexible curriculum. Our educational philosophy draws on our Benedictine spirituality and the story of the Good Samaritan, guiding our girls to find balance and stability in their lives.

The College Board is looking for experienced professionals who have skills and experience in areas such as governance, project management, social justice, law, finance, risk management or human resources and an interest in supporting girls’ education in a faith-filled Catholic environment. Stella CommunityYear 10-12 Social Justice ForumLast week a group of Stella girls were lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit Mount St Benedict College and partake in an evening dedicated to social justice. The evening’s focus was on climate change and its interactions with nature.
We were privileged to hear a keynote address given by the 2007 Australian of The Year: Tim Flannery. Mr Flannery provided us with an eye-opening depiction of the effects of climate change globally. Although the statistics were unfortunate and shocking to us, he then followed on to give us insight as to how to combat climate change and how internationally we can all come together, thus, finishing his presentation on a more hopeful note. Hearing of his achievements and perseverance in battling climate change was inspirational and we sat in awe at the accomplishments that this individual has achieved so far in his lifetime.
We also participated in two workshops on the night - our first being an Aboriginal workshop that gave us a more in depth understanding of how nature and Aboriginal identity are interwoven and what a great influence the status of nature has on indigenous lifestyle and mindset.
In between workshops, we were given the chance to converse and share our ideas and newfound knowledge with members of our social-justice-pursuing community (whilst munching on yummy burgers). Our second workshop was an in depth informative talk that challenged us to learn about the biodiversity in the community that we live in and to further educate ourselves about Australian nature.
We ended the night with a speech from the school captain of Mount St Benedict College that asked us to question ourselves as individuals on issues facing our world and how we can work towards a better society. Overall, the entire experience was extremely rewarding and broadened our mindsets on the natural world around us and the impact we have on our planet’s wellbeing. Kiara Donlevy, Year 11

MissionMISSION NEWSMercy Foundation Youth Awards 2017 Video Competition is open.
The Mercy Foundation Youth Awards is a video competition aimed at developing the advocacy skills of students, encouraging them to become more informed about social justice issues and inspiring them to consider what action they and their community can take to protect the rights of vulnerable people in our community.
The focus of the awards this year is Human Trafficking and Slavery in Australia, specifically the issues of human trafficking and slavery in domestic servitude, restaurant work and agricultural work.
The Youth Awards is open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12.
Important Dates: The competition closes on Friday 23 June 2017.

The Geography Teachers’ Association of NSW/ACT organises an annual competition for students and schools to foster an enthusiasm for Geography through engagement and rewards.
The emphasis of the competition is the use of fieldwork and the gathering of primary and secondary data as core skills in students’ study of Geography. Students can enter the competition as individuals or in groups.
The competition categories are: 1. The Geographical Fieldwork and Research Competition – open to all students from Year 7 to Year 10. 2. The Dr Don Biddle Places and Environments Study (Years 9 and 10 only) 3. The Susan Bliss Cross-Curricular Priority Awards 4. The Dr Maurine Goldston-Morris Civic and Citizenship Awards
Entries must be submitted either by mail or online by Friday, 24 November 2017.

LEARNING ENRICHMENT NEWSStudents have many and varied learning enrichment opportunities at Stella Maris College.
This includes in-class extension tasks, intra/inter-school competitions plus national/international competitions.
International Learning Enrichment Opportunity The ICAS Writing and the ICAS Science tests are available for all interested students. The ICAS tests are suitable for the students that enjoy competing in an international academic sphere. We have limited copies available for the enthusiastic student who may nominate themselves, be nominated by their guardian, or nominated by their teacher. ICAS is the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

Inter-School Learning Enrichment Opportunity - Da Vinci Decathlon Teams Four Stella Maris teams attended the da Vinci Decathlon at Knox College. Da Vinci is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code-breaking, art and poetry, science, English, philosophy, creative production, cartography and general knowledge. Competition was fierce but enjoyable.

Performing ArtsPERFORMING ARTS NEWSCongratulations to our Dancers Company Jazz were awarded 1st place in the I'd Rather Be Dancing Eisteddfod on the weekend and Company Contemporary received a Highly Commended for their performance of 'Chess'.
Special mention goes to Year 12 students Elle *, Elisha Maguire and Claire Busse who finished choreographing and polishing the routines in preparation for the Eisteddfod.
Congratulations to Tilli McMahon in Year 7 who recently won the 12 year old girl singers category in the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod.

SPORT REPORTNSWCCC Soccer Congratulations to the Stela girls who represented Broken Bay at the NSWCCC Soccer Championships this week. All of the Stella girls played very well and the Broken Bay team was unlucky to miss the Bronze medal play off on a count back. Well done to Bella Huggins, Nell Breslin, Tegan Biasi, Jade Phillip and Kirra Bullman.
NSW Water Polo Congratulations to Tasma* who represented NSW at the Australian All Schools Water Polo Championships in Noosa last week. Tasma had a great week and her team was successful in winning the title!
