Dear Stella Community,

The events of this week remind us of the fragility of human life:

Olivia Learmont, Brigid Mackenzie, Lily Mills, Sophie Berry and Mrs Coyte returned from Gallipoli after remembering the 8,000 Australians who gave their lives for their country in that campaign.

An earthquake in Nepal left over 4000 dead and many injured and trapped in the rubble of their homes. ‘I pray for the victims, for the wounded and for all those who suffer because of this calamity. May they be sustained by fraternal solidarity’, Pope Francis said.

The execution of ten prisoners in Indonesia (including two Australians) saddened many and was condemned by the Australian government.

These incidents remind us that we should remember to always value life and to care for others. Appeals to assist the Nepalese community have been set up by Caritas - www.caritas.org.au, CARE - www.care.org.au and WorldVision - www.worldvision.com.au.

I wish to acknowledge the girls who represented Stella Maris College at local Anzac commemorations. Thanks to Matilda Gould, Angie Schroeder, Lucy Knowles, Emily Boyde, Lucy Eagleton, Gemma Williams and Isobel Schofield who attended the Manly ceremonies and to Newbie Redding and Caitlin Werakso who laid the wreath at Collaroy beach. We appreciate the efforts of the girls in representing the school at these important community events.

The first round of Student Learning Conferences were held this week at the Benedict Campus. Thank you to the parents/carers who attended with their daughters to discuss how we ensure good learning outcomes are being worked towards in all subjects. Thanks to Ms Molloy who ensured that the PTO booking system ran smoothly and for the patience of families in what was wet and miserable weather.

Finally, I would encourage all families to be involved in our upcoming P&F events. Firstly, the annual School Fees Raffle is almost sold out. Please check the P&F Committee Report for details on how to buy the last tickets. Secondly, the P&F Trivia Night, an important community event and a chance to meet other parents and the teachers, will be held on 16 May at the Benedict Campus starting at 6.30pm. Please come along and be part of the fun.

This week in Assembly as we reflected on the Anzac 100 Year Commemoration we prayed:

Go out into the world in peace. Be brave: keep hold of what is good. Never pay back wrong for wrong; encourage the faith hearted. Support the weak and distressed; give due honour to everyone. Be always joyful and give thanks whatever happens - for this is what God wills for you. Amen.

NOUMEA TRIP

On 28 March, four Year 9 and four Year 10 students as well as their teachers, Ms Murray and Mrs Ferguson, travelled to Nouméa, the capital of the French-governed Pacific island New Caledonia for 6 days and 5 nights.

We were able to practise our French skills every night as we dined in different restaurants as well as during the days which were spent at the aquarium, the local beach promenade amongst French locals, on a 'tchou tchou' open-train tour of the sights of Nouméa, and at a French shopping district where we bought French novelties for our families and French food for our hotel rooms.

We also went to The Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre, devoted to the culture of the indigenous "Kanak" people. The centre is an aesthetic amazement designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. There we learnt about New Caledonia's indigenous culture, language and food and were able to recreate a traditional dish which took over an hour to cook as it is heated underground.

Our last full day in Nouméa was spent on Amédéé Island, to

which we were endured a 50-minute catamaran ride. There we snorkelled in one of the world’s most admired reefs as New Caledonia's reef ranks second longest double-barrier reef in the world. We also went on a glass-bottom boat ride around the island to further view the unique marine life. We then watched a traditional dance and even offered our own Australian dancing skills to the occasion in return!

All in all, the trip to Nouméa was one that will remain a highlight of our schooling. It was both linguistically and culturally enlightening and fulfilling and served itself as an unmatchable experience.

A “STELLA” TEAM IN NSW STATE FINALS……a huge first!

Year 10 students, Stephanie Cramer, Alison Godbier, Grace*, Georgia Gullick and Rebekah Odgers competed in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge in late March. The ABBC is Australia’s only neuroscience competition for high school students. The were inspired by a recent guest speaker to learn about the brain, how it functions and the misconceptions about neurological and mental illness. This challenge tested the neuroscience knowledge of students on topics such as intelligence, memory, emotions, movement, stress, ageing, sleep, addiction, Alzheimer’s and stroke. Our students prepared for this competition by studying and discussing neuroscience during lunchtimes, as well as their own independent study.

This year, for the first time, we have a team of 4 girls who will compete in both the team and individual events in the State Finals of the Brain Bee Challenge on July 16 at the University of Western Sydney Medical Faculty. This is a highly competitive State Final that includes students from many of the selective schools in the state. Well done girls, your enthusiasm has

proved successful! We wish you well in the next round!

BBSSSA CROSS COUNTRY

On Wednesday 29 April, the Stella Cross Country team competed in the BBSSSA cross country carnival at St Ives Showground. It was a cold and wet day, and the course was made a little more interesting after the storms that hit us last week.

The Stella team had a great day. All of the girls competed enthusiastically. We had the largest girls team at the carnival, and some great results in all age groups. The highlight of the day was finishing 2nd in the overall point score, and gaining 1st and 2nd place in the 13, 14 and 15 year team events.

Well done to Millie Prior, Charlie Gilbert, Sophie Wickham, Tasma*, Naomi Scott and Nell Breslin who have been selected to represent BBSSSA at the NSWCCC Cross Country in June.

The following girls finished in the top 10 places in their races (a great effort, as some of the races had 80+ students in them):

A big congratulations to the whole team for their enthusiasm and fantastic running on a cold and wet day:
