Dear Stella Community,

Parents And Friends Trivia Night

We remind you that the P&F Trivia Night will to be held this Saturday evening at Benedict Campus. You might like to read through the great list of prizes that are available and come prepared to contribute. We hope that you can join us for a great evening of entertainment. The staff is keen to compete with parents and to repeat their win from last year! Thanks to the P&F Committee for organising a great evening’s entertainment and prizes.

Student Learning Conferences

It has been a great pleasure to meet families during the Student Learning Conferences. The teachers are keen to establish good relationships with the students and families this year as we establish new understandings of the importance of learning and teaching at Stella. It is important that we use these opportunities to establish good work patterns at home and at school to achieve good outcomes for the girls. I look forward to meeting more of you at the last conferences to be held next week.

Interviewing New Stella Girls

I have spent much of this term interviewing students who wish to become Stella Girls. It is wonderful, but a humbling experience, when I find out that what impressed them most about Stella comes out of the conversations they have with students who volunteer to take families on a tour at our Open Evening. The connection that students have with the school is such a great aspect of our community.

Good Luck

To Newbie Redding who has been selected to represent NSW at the 2015 Australian Gymnastics Championships. She will be competing in Melbourne next week. We wish her all the best.

Prayer

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘I do not call you servants any longer because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last…’ (John 15:15-16)

Today’s prayer is evocative of our school aim and mission in its challenge to bear fruit. Our Stella Girls are asked to go out into the world to make a difference- we hope that the fruit they bear is a true and lasting contribution to the community.

SOCIAL JUSTICE FORUM

Monday’s Social Justice day took us to Santa Sabina College in Strathfield. We were welcomed warmly and split up into different table groups so we could socialise with other students. There were many schools from around Sydney and even one from Canberra!

A traditional dance of Kiribati was performed and we listened to speakers from Tuvalu and Kiribati that were involved in various non-profit organisations working toward raising awareness and preventing their island homes from being destroyed by the effects of climate change.

We discovered the dramatic consequences global warming and rising sea levels are having on these small islands; huge waves are destroying sea walls, freshwater wells are being contaminated with salt water and shorelines are eroding. The locals say that the sea is “stealing their land”.

The speakers stated that leaving their country would be a last resort because their land is extremely important to them. Their country and culture are their identity and they want future generations to be raised the same way true Tuvalans or Kiribatians would be.

After recess we rotated through four different workshops, which discussed the importance of being aware of climate change, buying fair-trade products where possible and what Australia could do for Tuvalu and Kiribati. We got to try some fair-trade chocolate and make beads out of recycles magazines. These workshops really emphasised how important is it to be aware of how climate change not only affects Australia but also small islands and how it’s crucial that we spread knowledge about the issues in Tuvalu and Kiribati.

For the last part of the day, we got back into our school groups and discussed ways in which we could aid in spreading awareness and helping the cause within our own schools. The seven of us decided that in order to help inform people of the concerns about Tuvalu and Kiribati, we would set up an Instagram and Facebook account seeing as almost everyone now uses these social networks. We decided to call it Stella Change and post things like statistics and information about the detrimental effects of climates change. We’re doing this in an attempt to stimulate consciousness about the environment.

All in all, the day was very informative and eye opening for all of us and we would definitely volunteer next year if we have the chance. We had a great day and not only did we make new friends and learn many new things, we are now all inspired to go forth and spread our knowledge to others and really make a different for the people of Tuvalu, Kiribati and the world.

EXAM TIME

A variety of assessment tools are used throughout the year in all subjects. Term 2 is traditionally exam time. It’s a time when students stop to consolidate and reflect on work covered so far.

Assessment schedules for all subjects are available on the Portal. These show the type and date of tasks. You will see that not all subjects will require students to do an exam in Term 2.

Students in Years 7 and 8 complete exams in class time. There is no exam block where they do exam after exam for days on end while regular classes are suspended. Teachers give students a notification sheet giving details about an up-coming exam so students can prepare well in advance and enter dates into their diary so they can organise a study plan.

Students in Years 9 and 10 do more formal exams in mandatory subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography. Again there is no exam block. Over a four day period, students will sit one exam per day. Other classes run as normal so less teaching time is lost. This changes in Term 4 for Year 10 where they are preparing to enter the senior school and an exam block is more appropriate.

The timetable for Year 9 exams is shown below:

The timetable for Year 10 exams is shown below:

If your daughter is absent on a day when there is an exam scheduled, please call Student Reception to report her absence as usual. She will do the exam in her first period back in class of that subject where the exam was missed.

The results of the exams and any other assessment tasks from Semester 1 will be reported on the Semester 1 reports which will be available on the Portal at the end of Term 2.

Students from Year 7-10 attend study skills workshops at the College to prepare for these busy times of year. Different techniques are demonstrated to make study time more effective and productive. The material covered in the workshops is available on Moodle for any student who wants to refresh her skills.

We wish all students well with Term 2 assessments.

BECOME A STELLA MARIS HOMESTAY FAMILY

Our Homestay Service is an important aspect of the College’s International Program. The aim of this service is to place our overseas students, who travel a long distance to come to Australia to study on their own, with quality and caring homestay families. The students are normally aged 14-16 years old and plan to pursue their studies for at least three years at Stella Maris College.

The overseas Stella students and their families value and respect this service – they think it is the best experience their daughters could ever have. To be able to live with a Western family and get to know the culture, cuisine and gain lifelong friendships is an integral part of their study journey. Therefore, the College’s International Program carefully selects homestay families by arranging to meet with them to ensure the home is suitable to accommodate the student and that Working With Children Check requirements are met. After approval, we provide homestay families with detailed information and guidelines to help them successfully host a long-term overseas student.

If you would like to enrich your family’s culture, teach your children inclusiveness and understanding, or create some international connections by hosting an overseas student, please express your interest by emailing me, Jiani Chen [email protected], with your name, your daughter’s name, home address and mobile number and I will be in contact with you.

Jiani Chen, International Program Officer

ALL LIBRARY LINKS REMINDER

All Library Links is divided into 8 tabs, which hold the necessary referencing, essay writing, plagiarism, paraphrasing and research guides. All Library Links can be found in Moodle - Stella Maris College’s Online Learning Management System.

Tab 1 - Quick links: Online access to Encyclopaedia Britannica

Year 10 are currently examining the significance of the Eucharist for the Catholic adherents.

Encyclopaedia Britannica is available to students online – available at home and at school. Encyclopaedia Britannica is a good place to start as it is a well-researched resource, and it is written for varying reading levels - Primary to High school. Contents on the left offers articles, images, videos, Web’s best sites, Ebsco, Primary sources and Ebooks.

NEW BOOK: REVIEW AND WHY I LOVE MY JOB

Thirst, written by Lizzie Wilcock, is a novel that I take great pleasure in recommending to students. “Karanda Hooke doesn’t need anybody or anything. On her way to her sixth foster home, a crash leaves her stranded in the outback with only a backpack, a bottle of water and a faded picture of the mother she hasn’t seen in years. This is her chance to escape her old life. There’s only one thing in her way… eight year old Solomon”. There are only 2 characters in this book but they hold the readers interest due to their spiky, loving, independent and vulnerable personalities. As well as being a compelling read, the reader gains useful survival tips in case one is ever stranded in the Australian Desert.
