Are you wanting to be the best you can be?

My name is Brigid Mackenzie and I graduated from Stella in 2015. I am an experienced high school and primary school tutor, and I am looking to tutor Stella girls who are striving to do their best and to improve at any level. In 2015 I received a 96.10 ATAR and the highest band (6/90%+) marks in HSC Ancient History, Modern History, Studies or Religion II and Advanced English. I am happy to tutor girls from Year 7 to Year 12 in any of the branches of these subjects, as well as junior Science and HSC Biology. If you or your daughter are interested, please feel free to contact me for more information at [email protected].

HEAD LICEThere has been a confirmed case of head lice. Could you please check your daughter's hair for head lice, and if you find them, please treat your daughter before they return to the school.

A good method to check for lice is: 1. Brush and detangle your child’s dry hair with an inexpensive hair conditioner. 2. Once your child’s hair is detangled, comb the conditioner through their hair with a good quality head lice comb. 3. Wipe the conditioner from the head lice comb onto a paper towel or tissue. 4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs. 5. If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated before they return to school.

The following website should be read for effective treatment of head lice:- http://www.mhcs.health.nsw.gov.au/publicationsandresources/pdf/publication-pdfs/diseases-and-conditions/5570/doh-5570-eng.pdf

Stella CommunitySLEEP OUTFriday, 7 September, we held a $5 Mufti Day along with our annual Stella Sleep Out where all money raised will be shared between the Good Samaritan Kinder School (the money will be taken to the Kinder School in the holidays by the Year 11 girls who are involved in the immersion) and the Good Samaritan Inn, Melbourne.

From these two events we raised close to $7,000. Well done to all who donated on Mufti Day and participated in the Stella Sleep Out.

'It was cold! It was a reality check' - Molly Lennon (Year 11)

‘It created a sense of community as we were working together to support a great cause. It showed the reality of sleeping rough with a small meal and sleeping on a hard floor' - Sophia Van Rooyen (Year 11)

'It was eye opening- I’ve never done anything like this before. It was a wonderful way to give back to the community! I want to do it Again next year!' - Emily Foresto (Year 10)

‘This was my third time at the ‘Stella Sleep Out’. It’s good to experience what other people experience in their daily lives”'– Ashleigh Broe (Year 12)

R U OK DAY On Thursday, 13 September all of the girls were greeted at the gates by some of the Senior students and staff who are raising awareness today around this very important day and reminding us all to connect with those around us, start a conversation and ask - R U OK?

Mental health is an important issue that we try to tackle and destigmatise through real conversations and equipping students with strategies to deal with the difficult situations they may face. This is the focus of RUOK? Day but is also embedded into our wellbeing programs for each year group and is addressed throughout the year. As our College Captain stated in the assembly, "No-one is alone at Stella - there is always someone to talk to. Don't be afraid to reach out to a friend, teacher, Head of Year or our Counsellor." SAILING NEWSStella Sailing Program Takes to the Water

Summer is around the corner signaling the beginning of another Stella sailing season. Stella Maris and Middle Harbour Yacht Club offer all students from Year 7 to Year 12 a Sailing Program which is fully accredited with the national body, Australian Sailing.

Sailing is offered in Term 4 and Term 1 on Wednesday afternoons from 4.00pm to 6.30pm at MHYC (on the Mosman side of the Spit Bridge).

Discover Sailing programs are designed for both novice and experienced sailors. They take the student from complete beginner status through to a level of competency that includes using spinnakers, trapeze, skippering and the fun and challenge of racing. These programs can be conducted in Pacers, 420s and International Cadets. Experienced sailors are offered an Instructor Training Program which includes powerboat training, first aid and employment opportunities to successful participants. Certificates of completion for the various course levels are provided at the end of each Term.

Our sailing students love the opportunity to regularly sail around Sydney’s beautiful harbour with other enthusiastic, fun and friendly students. They appreciate that the instructors are very experienced, fully qualified to teach across all skill levels and ages and create challenging but enormously rewarding experiences.

Please contact Ann O’Brien [email protected] for more information or if you would like your daughter to participate for free in the first session, 17 October.

A diagram summarising the programs offered by Middle Harbour Yacht Club is below:

DRAMA NEWSNone the Wiser A group of five young nuns, the Sisters of Benefaction, hires Stonegate Convent in the lower Blue Mountains where they convene and prepare their mission of daily visits into the wider Sydney community. One unprepared day, a pair of nuns from the Order of Magnus, ever diminishing in numbers, arrives seeking succour and a place to stay to gather their circumstances and prepare their own mission.

Graciously, the Benefactions welcome the Magnusites, accepting their offer of a modest contribution for board and lodging. But all is not as it appears and ructions ensue.

What might the trouble be? Anthony Booth’s None the Wiser, Year 11 Drama’s major production for 2018 is a delightful situation comedy, replete with misunderstandings and secrets kept. It performs for one night only at 7.00 pm next Wednesday 26th September in our own Star of the Sea Theatre.

All are welcome and admission is free. You’ll love it.
