Term 2 Week 5 24 May 2011 Dear Parents and Caregivers, Last week I attended an in-service on ‘Digital Citizenship’ which brought to my attention the level of my ignorance and naiveté in matters related to use of digital technologies. As someone who accepts a substantial degree of responsibility for providing access to appropriate staff and student learning opportunities, informed citizenship of this digital age cannot be ignored nor its importance underestimated. I’d like to share some of my learning with you in this newsletter because, as parents, you too must have contemporary knowledge and understanding of the scope, potential and pitfalls inherent in our own and our young people’s participation in online life. Firstly, a little about citizenship…..Citizenship, of course, comes with rights and responsibilities and when commitment to an appropriate balance of these exists, societal and personal health and safety are nurtured. On the other hand, when one comes at the expense of the other, breakdown of the group' s health and well-being surely follows – sooner or later. The problem with the digital world is its growth is so constant and rapid that awareness, articulation and enforcement of the responsibilities (appropriate, responsible, moral and ethical use) have not kept pace with avenues for participation. The following NINE ELEMENTS OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP provide a framework for considering appropriate, responsible and ethical participation in the digital world: 1. Digital Access – Full electronic participation in society. Can all users participate in a digital society at acceptable levels if they choose? 2. Digital Commerce – Electronic buying and selling of goods. Do users have the knowledge and protection to buy and sell in a digital world? 3. Digital Communication – Electronic exchange of information. Is there an understanding of the digital communication methods and when they are appropriate? 4. Digital Literacy – The capability to use digital technology and to know when and how to use it. Have users taken the time to learn about digital technologies? Do they share that knowledge with others? 5. Digital Etiquette – The standards of conduct expected by other digital technology users. Do users consider others when using digital technologies? 6. Digital Law – The legal rights and restrictions governing technology use. Are the users aware of laws (rules, policies) that govern the use of digital technologies? 7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities – The privileges and freedoms extended to all digital technology users and the behavioural expectations that come with them. Are users ready to protect the rights of others to defend their own digital rights? 8. Digital Health and Wellness – The elements of physical and psychological well-being related to digital technology use. Do users consider the risks (both physical and psychological) when using digital technologies? 9. Digital Security – The precautions that all technology users must take to guarantee their personal safety and the security of their networks. Do users take the time to protect their information while creating precautions to protect others’ data as well? Education in these requirements of digital citizenship begins in the very earliest days and must go hand in hand with participation in the online world, into the future. I now understand, more fully than ever before, that we must be more intentional and strategic in this educational work, both at home and at school. Have a great week everyone. Dear Parents/Caregivers, The Virtue for this week is LOYALTY in honour of National Reconciliation Week which starts this Thursday, National Sorry Day. National Reconciliation Week is an annual celebration held each year from 27 May to 3 June. It celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The week-long celebration gives our school the opportunity to explore how all Australians can join the national reconciliation effort.

This year’s theme is Let’s Talk Recognition. Reconciliation involves building positive, respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians, enabling us to work together to close the gaps, and to achieve a shared sense of fairness and justice. The ultimate goal of reconciliation is to build strong and trusting relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians, as a foundation for success and the enhancement of our national wellbeing. The choice of the virtue LOYALTY coinciding with Reconciliation Week is to honour the commitment made to the reconciliation process.

Loyalty is unwavering commitment to people and ideals we care about—being steadfast during good times and bad. Even when others disappoint us, we are resilient and forgiving. We invest in our relationships and do what it takes to keep them whole and strong. We stand by our true friends no matter the cost, while not allowing blind loyalty to lead us into trouble. Above all, we must be true to ourselves and loyal to what we know is right.

The Practice of Loyalty: I am practising Loyalty when...

• I give support to people and ideas I believe in; • I am a friend through good times and bad; • I stick to my commitments unless I have a really good reason to

change them; • I forgive mistakes; • I don’t allow misplaced loyalty to endanger me; • I don’t allow others to come between me and something or

someone I care about.

I am grateful for the gift of loyalty. It nurtures my commitments.

Further information about Reconciliation Week can be found on the website http:www.reconciliation.org.au. God bless,

Being Nice-what does it mean? • Not talking about people behind their backs • Not talking about people in front of their backs • If you see somebody struggling with something, help them • Put yourself in another person’s place before you criticise • If the lift door is open and there is only one space left let someone else get on • When driving, if someone puts their indicator on don’t speed up, slow down and let them

in • Smile, speak to people, and say good morning. • If you have never been a nice person or you need more practice, try these steps-

1. Take yourself out of the equation, no ego needed. 2. Try to look at the other person’s point of view 3. Just listen 4. Put personal preference aside 5. Learn to love people 6. Do unto others- Jesus gave us the most comprehensive plan for being nice.
