HMT Announces Summer Programs for Children & TeensSARATOGA SPRINGS - Home Made Theater is pleased to announce their 15th summer of programming for children ages 8 through 17. HMT’s classes are an excellent opportunity for children and teens to use their creativity and talents during their summer vacations, while building their self-esteem and confidence in a nurturing and supportive environment. HMT welcomes back returning instructor NYC actor/director Paul Sigrist and is pleased to introduce David Macaluso. Space is available for all four week-long ses-sions: Theater Games (July 8-12), The Foundations of Good Singing (July 8-12), Improvisation (July 15-19), and Shakespeare for Young Actors (July 22-26). No experience necessary. Theater Games meets Monday through Friday from 9:30a.m. – 12pm. in the Saratoga Spa State Park Administrative Building (on the back side of the Spa Little Theater), and is taught by David Macaluso. The remaining three classes meet Mondays through Fridays from 1–3:30 p.m. at Bloom: A Movement Space at 153 Regent Street in Sara-toga Springs, and are taught by Paul Sigrist. The class fee per week session is $140. Those who register by May 31st will receive a $20 discount. All classes are limited to 15 students per class. 2013 TRASK: Preserving Saratoga Springs Through Art Announces Honorary Co-Chairs SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is pleased to announce Mayor Scott Johnson and Julie Johnson as the honorary co-chairs of 2013’s TRASK event. Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weeds and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day week-end will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. .

Hopefullybythetimeyou’rereadingthis,I’llhavefinallygottenmytomatoesplanted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sun-light. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PRO-VIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETUATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION.

Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time(andprobablymoneytoo)creatingabeautifulflowerbedorvegetablegardenwa-tering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” misting theflowers.WhileitcreatesalovelyvisualeffectfortheTVviewer,itisoneoftheworstpossible things you can do to your plants. Why?

Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to re-place moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”?

Inthevegetablegarden,problemswithplantsthatproduceflowersbutneverset fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washesthepollenoutoftheflowers. Withoutthispollen, thebeescan’tpollinatetheflowers.Nopollen,nofruitorvegetables.

There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commer-cial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil whilewettingtheleavesandflowersaslittleaspossible. Soakerhosescandothisinpermanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging bas-kets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers haveNObusinessanywhereinaflowerorvegetablegarden.Yourhandheldspraygunhas no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.

Abraham Lincoln leading Whipple City ParadeGREENWICH – President Abraham Lincoln will be leading the Whipple City Parade to honor this year’s theme of Friday Night at the Movies, as the film “Lincoln” was nominated for 12 Acad-emy Awards and won 2 Os-cars this year. Cal is a very nice 2-year old brindle mixed breed boy. Upon 1st meeting, he’s a very

nice boy. His foster says that he gets along well with both cats and dogs.

Teddy is a very sweet-natured, older Pomeranian but he is plenty perky!

He is thought to be anywhere from 8-10 years so he would be eligible for our

Senior to Senior program (free to a Senior Citizen). He is mostly blind but gets around fine and would be a great companion for

someone looking for a lovey buddy. Teddy was found in a dumpster!

Despite this cruelty he endured, he has a very friendly disposition, likes to be petted

and have his belly rubbed.

Sylvia is a 3 year old beauty. She is friendly, playful, and fun!

Sonya is playful, curious, and friendly. She is good with other cats in her foster mom’s house and also with the dogs. Sonya likes

Community Appreciation Day & Open HouseGLENS FALLS - The Main Office of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company will host a Community Apprecia-tion Day and Open House on Friday, May 24, featuring tours of the new South Street building, food, and fundrais-ing activities to benefit the Queensbury Relay for Life. Festivities are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the down-town Glens Falls campus, in the courtyard between the new and old buildings at the corner of Glen and South streets. Tours of the Bank’s 20 South Street expansion will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be games with prizes, popcorn, balloons, a carnival clown, and hot dogs and drinks for a $1 donation from noon to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life of Queensbury, which is an overnight walk to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Soci-ety. Other fundraising activi-ties will include a bake sale, a raffle for a picnic basket filled with barbeque items, and the sale of luminarias to be decorated and dedicated in honor of loved ones who have battled cancer. During the relay, luminarias circle the track and provide light for participants as they walk throughout the night. Glens Falls National Bank offices host Community Apprecia-tion Days throughout the year as a way to show apprecia-tion for their neighbors and assist local causes. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emer-gency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose.

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

Choosing A Vehicle

Buying a new automobile, be it a brand new car or a pr-eowned vehicle, is a consider-able investment. Some buyers agonize over which automo-bile to buy, while others tend to stick with the same make or model for years on end.

Regardless of which group buyers fall into, there are some things all consumers should consider before buy-ing their next vehicle.

* Driver needs: A large sport utility vehicle might be your dream vehicle, but it might not be the most practical car to start parking in your ga-rage. When examining your vehicle needs, ask yourself what you use the car for. Is it just a vessel to get you from point A to point B? Do you routinely use your vehicle to take your children and their teammates to and from soccer practice? Is your commute long or short? Each of these things should factor into your decision. For example, if your commute to work is especially long, then perhaps a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle is the most practical choice. However, if you routinely carpool or use your car to get the kids to and fro, then a larger vehicle with a more roomy interior might be the best bet regardless of its fuel efficiency.

* Budget: Your budget is perhaps the biggest thing to consider when shopping for a new vehicle. Many buyers intend to finance or lease a vehicle, and sites such as Edmunds.com can help prospective buyers estimate what their monthly car payment will be. The larger the down payment you’re able to make, the less your monthly payment will be. In addition, those who intend to finance their vehicle purchases should consider the length of their finance agreement. You might be able to finance a vehicle purchase in as little as 12 months or as long as 72 months. The longer your agreement, the less you will be paying each month. However, you will pay more interest the longer your agreement is and your payment is likely to be the same in the 72nd month, when the vehicle has significantly depreciated in value, as it was in the first month when the vehicle’s value was at its peak.

* Lease or buy: The decision to lease or buy is something to consider. Leasing allows drivers to drive a brand new car for far less money than if they were to purchase the vehicle outright, and the terms of a lease are typically far shorter than those when buyers are financing, which allows drivers to get a new vehicle more often. Buying or financing a vehicle has its advantages as well, most notably that you will be making payments for something you’re eventually going to own. In addition, buying or financing gives consumers more flexibility, as they’re allowed to sell the car whenever they choose without penalty, something that is not

allowed under many lease agreements. In addition, there are no mileage restrictions when buy-ing or financing, while such restrictions are typical when leasing a vehicle.

* Insurance: Some vehicles are more expensive to insure than others. Insurance companies base insurance rates on a host of factors, but those vehicles that have the strongest safety records and are less likely to be stolen tend to cost less to insure. How much you will pay to insure a vehicle also depends on how you will be paying for it. Lenders typically require borrowers who are financing or leasing a vehicle to fully insure the car, which costs considerably more than basic insurance coverage that drivers who buy their vehicles outright tend to choose. Weigh the costs of insuring different makes or models before making your purchase.
