Service Star Awarded to Christina DicksonSARATOGA SPRINGS/GANSEVOORT – Saratoga Hospi-tal has named Christina Dickson, of Gansevoort, the August Service Star of the Month. Christina, a Patient Care Coordina-tor for Urgent Care at Wilton Medical Arts, has been a valued employee since January of 2012. She was recognized for her dedication to Saratoga Hospital’s LEAN initiatives—which recognize areas of potential improvement and creates systemat-ic implementations for change—as well as for her enthusiastic work ethic. The Service Star of the Month program recognizes employees and volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide great service to our patients, visitors and staff. A hospital-wide celebration was held in her honor. (A)

Books for Troops Needs to Raise Money; Books are PlentifulCAPITAL REGION – Thanks to your incredible response for our need for books, we have received a tremendous amount of books within a very short time and will be receiving thousands more from 3 additional book drives in November. As a result, we want to thank you for your generosity, but ask that dona-tions to Books for Troops be given in the form of monetary help instead of book donations. $12.50 sends a box of books overseas. However any amount will help. Additionally, Books for Troops will be trying to raise money by having a Bake Sale on Election Day, November 6 from 9am-6pm at the Halfmoon Town Hall. There will be NO book sale at this time due to con-gestion issues. Instead we will be selling raffle tickets for a 43” Samsung plasma TV. The price will be $5/ticket or $10/3 tick-ets. Drawing will be held on December 2. If you cannot make the bake sale, you can purchase a ticket for the TV by send-ing the amount of your ticket(s) to Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, and Clifton Park, NY 12065. Checks can be made out to Books for Troops. Please write on the check-- Raffle Tickets. (You will receive a receipt.) To hear how grate-ful the troops are for these books you can go on line to www.booksfortroopscp.webs.com. (P)

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and col-lected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn gener-ated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption

fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, re-move the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our Amer-ican flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are giv-en to Veteran Homeless Shel-ters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded War-riors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nurs-ing Homes and Veteran Hos-pitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully ac-cepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected]. (A)

This is the time of year when I like to start some Amaryllis bulbs so I’ll be able

to enjoy the flowers during the holiday season. Amaryllis also make a great gift! If you’re

thinking of purchasing one for someone (or for yourself), be aware that Amaryllis bulbs

offered can vary widely in size. Usually the price will reflect the size and quality of the

bulb. Try to get the largest bulbs you can find; even if they cost a bit more. A larger bulb

will produce more flowers AND you’ll be more successful getting it to re-flower in years to

come.

The Amaryllis or ‘Hippeastrum vittatum’ is commonly sold in “kit” form; with

a pot and soil included. Amaryllis is a member of the larger ‘Amaryllidaceae’ family that

includes clivia and nerine, popular bulbs grown in summer flowerbeds. Another unexpected

member of the Amaryllis clan is the agave. Native to Mexico, the agave is famous for its’

use in the production of tequila. Your ‘Hippaestrum vittatum’ hybrid Amaryllis is descended

from plants that grow naturally in Peru.

Amaryllis flowers range in color from pure white to wine red and every variation

in between. Banded, striped and bordered have been developed, transforming an already

striking plant into an extraordinary specimen indeed! It isn’t uncommon for the flower spike

to rise 2 1/2’ above the top of the bulb and produce flowers 7” across...a real show stopper!!

When you unpack your Amaryllis bulb, inspect the bottom and remove any dead

roots. Be careful to leave any live ones. The pot should seem too small for the bulb. It

should only be an inch or two wider than the widest part of the bulb.

Plant so that 1/2 to 1/3 of the bulb is exposed above the soil and water thoroughly.

Place your potted Amaryllis in a warm spot (on top of the refrigerator works for me). Don’t

water it again until you notice the flower stem starting to emerge from the top of the bulb.

When this happens, move your Amaryllis to a bright location and keep the soil lightly moist

(not soggy wet). The flower spike will grow very quickly with noticeable growth occurring

each day.

When the huge flowers open, you may want to move your Amaryllis to a cooler

location (as low as 50 degrees) to prolong the show of flowers. After the flowers are spent,

cut off the flower stem. By now leaves have probably started to emerge from the bulb. To

get your Amaryllis to flower again, it’s important to promote this leaf growth. Think of the

leaves as solar collectors that convert sunlight into energy that’s stored in the bulb for the

next flowering cycle. Bright light (but not direct sun) is the source of next year’s flowers.

Keep the soil lightly moist and feed with a soluble plant food like Peters (no, no relation)

about every two weeks. The best way to strengthen your Amaryllis is to sink the pot in a

semi-shady flowerbed outside when things warm up next summer. Sink the pot into the soil

so that the exposed part of the bulb is almost covered. Before frost, bring your Amaryllis

inside and allow it to dry-out completely. Keep dry and store at 60 to 65 degrees for at least

a month. This dry storage period is necessary to stimulate your Amaryllis to begin its next

growth cycle. Remember, Amaryllis like to be potbound so, leave it in the same size pot for

two or three years. Thanks for the read.
