CAPITAL DISTRICT - June 30th, 2014 marked the be-ginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of inner-city children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serv-ing New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Albany Area, NY, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is cur-rently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this summer. Fresh Air summers are filled with children run-ning barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit subur-ban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an inde-pendent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. DID YOU KNOW? Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for polli-nation, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amor-phophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rain-forests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get

a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract in-sects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves or true roots -- it’s basically one large flower.

Weed growth in a garden cannot only prove unsightly, but also ultimately harmful to plants and vegetables. When weeds appear in a garden, they have already begun to steal nutrients and water from surround-ing plants, and if allowed to grow tall, they can also block sunlight from reaching the plants. Unfortunately, weeds can be resilient, and there is no way to guarantee they won’t grow. But garden-ers can take several steps to limit the growth of weeds so the plants in their gardens can grow strong.* Work the soil regularly. When weed roots are removed from the soil, weeds die. But just because you hoed or tilled the soil last month does not mean new weeds won’t grow in and start robbing your plants of es-sential nutrients and minerals this month. The garden should be cultivated regularly, and you should pay particular attention to the soil after the garden has been watered. If weeds are allowed to go to seed, the garden can quickly be overwhelmed by them, as young weeds tend to grow in quickly and a little water might be all they need to sprout. So make a point to routinely cultivate the soil with a hoe or tiller, being careful when working on soil around growing plants.* Lay down black plastic. Some gardeners may want to avoid laying black plastic down in their gardens for fear that such a weed deterrent robs the garden of its natural beauty. While that might be true, the black plastic also robs many weeds of their ability to grow in. Some weeds may be espe-cially stubborn and grow in under the plastic, forcing their way through the holes cut into the plastic for the plants to grow through. But laying black plastic covering over the garden before it’s planted is often an effective way to limit weed growth.* Lay mulch in vegetable gardens. Mulch can serve multiple benefits in a gar-den. Many people find mulch aesthetically appeal-ing, but mulch serves more practical purposes as well.

Mulch made of organic materials, such as bark chips or grass clippings, is often too heavy for weeds to push through, making it difficult, if not impossible, for weeds to sprout in the garden. But mulch also con-serves moisture in the soil, strengthening plant roots as a result. Stronger roots can lead to a healthier garden.

* Cut down on plants’ elbow room. The more space between plants, the more room weeds have to grow. So decreasing the space be-tween plants can limit weed growth. But spacing plants too closely together can make it difficult for vegetables to grow in as well. Spacing recommendations will likely be included on packaging when buying seeds, but reducing those recommendations by an inch or two may allow the plants to grow in strong while limiting weed growth at the same time.

THESE ANIMALS MAY HELP YOUR GARDENPlanning and maintaining a garden requires a lot of eff ort, which can result in an aestheti-cally pleasing addition to the landscape. But that hard work can also fall victim to nature when local wildlife fi nd a garden too mouth-watering to resist.

In an eff ort to rid a garden of unwanted pests, gardeners may unwittingly scare away animals and insects that might just protect the garden from more ill-intentioned ani-mals. Not every creature that scurries is out to get prized petunias or to devour toma-toes. In fact, many can prove benefi cial to gardens.

BATSBats have a bad reputation, as people unnec-essarily fear bats because they believe them to be carriers of disease. But many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a hu-man. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour, so it’s easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance but also harbor po-tentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain rodents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in a yard.

FROGSFrogs and toads will prey on insects and make the local insect population more man-ageable. Toads eat mainly slugs, who feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Frogs and toads are attracted to water, so includ-ing a pond or another water feature in the garden will provide them with a habitat they like.

BIRDSWhile it is true that some birds can damage crops, many birds are content to feed on in-sects attracted to the garden, which helps to keep insect numbers in check. Chickadees,

for example, will dine on aphid eggs, while larger birds may prey on mice or other ro-dents or simply scare them out of the gar-den. Jays and mockingbirds are known to be feisty and can even deter dogs and cats from a yard. Hummingbirds will sip on the nectar of fl owers and help pollinate plants.

SNAKES

Snakes in a garden can be disconcerting to some people, but snakes are ideal preda-tors who feed on insects and rodents several times their size. Snakes are the right size and shape to invade the burrows of pest animals.

BUTTERFLIES AND BEES

Butterfl ies and bees are responsible for pol-linating the vast majority of plants. Avoid using pesticides that may diminish butterfl y or bee populations. A beehive right next to a garden may not be practical, but don’t make attempts to destroy it. Consult with a profes-sional beekeeper to see what can be done to move the beehive without destroying it.

Many animals and insects can be detrimen-tal to the health of a garden. However, sev-eral animals are handy to have around and should be welcomed to the landscape.

Fertilizing a lawn is a spring-time tradition for many homeowners. Winter can take its toll on a lawn, but fertilizer can go a long way toward helping a lawn re-cover from harsh weather. While lawn-and-garden en-thusiasts might know the ins and outs of fertilizing a lawn, novices might need a little help as they look to restore their lawns.* Find out what your lawn needs. Even novice green thumbers likely know that overfertilization can harm a lawn, and that’s a big rea-son many homeowners ap-proach fertilizing their lawn with some trepidation. A lush lawn adds to the curb appeal of a home, while a lawn that’s patchy or ap-pears to be poorly taken care of can lower property value. Before fertilizing a lawn, homeowners should determine the needs of their lawns. A soil test can deter-mine if the lawn has any nu-trient defi ciencies.* Don’t overdo it with ni-trogen. Fertilizing with too much nitrogen is a common mistake, as too much nitro-gen can be harmful, decreas-ing root growth and increas-ing a lawn’s susceptibility to disease. A slow-release fer-tilizer may be an option, as such fertilizers break down nutrients over a longer peri-od of time, which also allows homeowners to extend the intervals between fertilizing sessions. But a lawn can get nitrogen from other sources as well. Such sources include grass clippings or raked leaves left on the lawn after being shredded by a mulch-ing mower.* Consider using granules instead of spray. Spraying a lawn with fertilizer might seem like the easiest and quickest way to fertilize, but spraying is typically best left to the professionals. That’s because novices often struggle to evenly apply the

fertilizer when spraying, and many do not account for the wind when spraying fertil-izer. A traditional spreader that fertilizes a lawn with granules makes it easier for nonprofessionals to ap-ply the fertilizer accurately and evenly. Before fertil-izing with granules, read the package to determine if you need to water the lawn before application, as some fertilizers are only eff ective when applied to a lawn after it has been watered. Also, be sure to fi ll the spreader on asphalt instead of the lawn. Chances are you’re going to spill granules when fi lling the spreader, and such spills

can be harmful to the lawn.* Plan to fertilize several times. Some homeowners only fertilize twice a year, once in the spring and then once again in the fall. But fertilizer should be applied multiple times throughout the year, beginning in the early spring. The fi rst time to fertilize is when the soil tem-perature reaches roughly 55 F, which is often evident be-cause grass typically starts to grow again when the soil reaches that temperature. Fertilize again roughly a month after fertilizer is fi rst applied, and then do so ev-ery six to eight weeks after through October.

DID YOU KNOW? Many homeowners prefer the look and du-rability of real hardwood fl ooring. It can be exciting to install new fl ooring, and you may be anxious to start transforming a room. But

before diving right in, it’s necessary to accli-mate wood fl ooring to a home. Otherwise, you may end up with buckled wood or other problems. Hardwood fl ooring needs to sit

in the room where it will be installed for anywhere be-tween fi ve and 10 days or in adherence to the manu-facturer recommendations. This gives the new fl ooring time to adjust to the humid-ity level and temperature of the home. Natural wood shrinks and expands due to temperature fl uctuations, which is why it is essential to match the conditions in the home before working with the fl ooring. The boards can be acclimated in the boxes (with the ends opened) or outside of the boxes.

According to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM

(NAPS)—There’s good news for homeowners who want to reduce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Americans are paying more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire® brand of heating and air conditioning recommend the following:

• Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild temperatures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cooling system work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your family’s time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.

• Install a dehumidifier. Humidity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air comfortable.

• Perform regular maintenance. Clean air filters, seal any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstructions. According to the EPA, improper insulation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent.

• Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualified technician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak efficiency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more efficient replacement system, such as ENERGY STAR®–qualified equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

HOME TIPIf there is a custom tile or specific design that you really like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The finished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. For example, it’s possible to find a piece of marble or granite that would fit perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

DID YOU KNOW? More and more homeowners embracing a relatively new way to shower. Walk-in, or walk-behind, showers are doorless structures that are designed to give the shower a more open look. Walk-in showers are often appear larger than more traditional showers, and those that do take up more space do so to prevent water from spraying around the room. Though walk-in showers do not have doors, they do employ a glass partition to keep water in. Walk-in showers often give a bathroom a more modern look, but their role is more than aesthetic. In fact, many seniors fi nd it is easier to get in and out of a walk-in shower, something that could reduce their risk of falling and suff ering an injury.

Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Ex-cessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is

not absorbed by the lawn can result in run-off , which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and even-tually pollute streams, rivers and oceans.

In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more sus-ceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

DID YOU KNOW?

The backyard has become a go-to destina-tion for warm weather recreation. As the “staycation” has grown in popularity, more eff ort has been put forth in making the backyard a place where all members of the household can enjoy themselves. That means merging interests into one space. A pool may be competing for acreage along with a decorative patch of lawn. Some homeowners wonder if lawns and pools can be successful alongside each other.

Many question if chlorinated pool water poses any ill eff ects on the grass in the back-yard. In addition to splash-out of water dur-ing fun times in the pool, water also will be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will fl ood the grass when it is necessary to clean and “backwash” the fi lter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not.

Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlorine levels contained in regular tap water. You wouldn’t hesitate turning on the hose to water your lawn, so you shouldn’t be overly concerned about pool water splash-ing out of the pool, particularly if you are stringent about maintaining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can with-stand chlorine at high acid levels and is pret-ty resilient about self-correcting. Further-more, grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate the grass blades.

Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlo-rine will essentially be used up and pose no

additional threat to the surrounding lawn.

Some people have actually said that water-ing your lawn with pool water can be an eco-friendly way of curbing water usage. There-fore, it may be safely used on lawns and most fl owering plants. It is unadvisable to water vegetable gardens with pool water because of any trace levels of other chemicals that may be found in the pool water.

Homeowners still concerned about expos-ing their lawns to pool water can create a buff er zone around the pool. Inground pools are traditionally bordered by concrete or patio blocks. Place stone or mulch around the perimeter of an above-ground pool to catch any splashes and to create a barrier between the pool and the lawn. Also, direct backwashed water through a long tube and have it fl ow it to an area away from the lawn.

Pool owners who want to have vibrant grass likely don’t need to worry about chlorine damaging their lawns. In fact, the lawns may fl ourish with the extra watering.

CAN POOLS AND LAWNS COHABITATE PEACEFULLY?

In most cases, pool water will not damage lawns because the chlorine level is not high enough.

I answer a LOT of gardening questions and it is interesting to see the questions change as the season progresses. There’s one misconception that crops up every year as summer begins... the difference between “planting” and “transplanting”...and there is a HUGE difference.

Here’s a typical situation: A customer is looking at the selection of fl owering shrubs that are on sale and seems like they want to purchase some but then they’ll say this, “I should prob-ably wait though.” Then I’ll ask, “Why?”

“I read that you shouldn’t transplant shrubs during summer.” Over the years, I’ve heard this many, many times before and, quite literally speaking, the statement is true but that isn’t what they are talking about...there’s a major difference between “planting” and “transplanting”.

When you’re digging up and moving an already established tree or shrub, that’s called trans-planting. If you attempt this during the long hot days of summer when the plant is in the full fl ush of growth, you can send plants into fatal shock. TRANSPLANTING is best done while the plant is dormant during late fall or very early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.

When you shop in your local garden center, you are buying plants that were dug and potted much earlier when the plant was still dormant. When you bring your new shrub or perennial home you’re PLANTING, not TRANSPLANTING.

Many folks put off their planting until fall because they think that they shouldn’t do it now. If you have PLANTING to do, do it as soon as you can. Think about it...if it wasn’t possible to plant in summer, landscapers would be out of business.

OK, now that we’ve cleared up that bit of confusion, let’s take a look at how to properly plant a shrub or tree to avoid a deadly (for the plants) mistake many folks make.

I’ve also seen my share of dead shrubs and trees. Over the years a pattern has become emerged. 90% of the dead shrubs and tree I see failed because they were planted too deeply. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant. When the crown of the plant is below the soil and the bark at the base of the tree is covered with dirt, it will eventually die. Let’s go review correct way to plant.

Dig the hole only as deep as the root ball or the pot but twice as wide. If you’ve dug too deep so you need to fi ll it in a bit. Avoid suffocating the tree by NOT burying the trunk or stem under the soil. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to be visible after planting. I used to add bone meal to the bottom of the planting hole. These days I’ve switched to something better. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup of Bio-Tone. Bio-Tone contains bone meal plus other great ingredients for start-ing a strong root system. If the soil is extra sandy, add peat moss to help improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture.

Next, place the tree into the hole and check to make sure I’m at the proper planting depth. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground.

Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant between what is above the ground and what is below) is at the proper level, fi ll in the rest of the plant-ing hole.

This is the point where inexperienced gardeners OFTEN make another mistake. When you dig a hole, then fi ll it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. Many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy, like tucking the plant in or some-thing. DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. Water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations.

You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch piled in a volcano shaped mound around the trunks of trees. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe. Thanks for the read!

A CAR’S WIPERS NEED CARE TO KEEP THINGS CLEAR

(NAPS)—Windshield wip-ers may be among the most overworked and underap-preciated equipment on your car.

For example, while drivers depend on their wipers for visibility in rain, sleet and snow, many don’t pay at-tention to them until they can’t see clearly out of the windshield. As a result, say experts, they end up endan-gering their own safety as well as that of fellow travel-ers.

“Windshield wipers take a beating—not just because of normal use, but also ex-treme temperatures, ultra-violet light, car waxes, tree sap, road tar and even pol-lutants,” says wiper specialist Chris Vermette.

A good rule of thumb is to replace blades at least year-ly, or as soon as you notice a streak, skip or smear. It’s an easy do-it-yourself project, but damaged wiper arms and motors may need pro-fessional attention.

Signs Of Wear

The most common signs and causes of worn wiper blades include:

• Streaking: The rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks, or there is debris on the windshield.

• Skipping: The blade devel-ops a curvature from dam-age or lack of use.

• Wearing: Excessive use and rounded—not squared—rubber edges.

• Splitting: Rubber deterio-rates and separates from the frame because of sun and

solvent damage.

Tips On Preserving Blades

While no wiper blade lasts forever, ACDelco Profession-al Service Center Program technicians recommend these tips to prolong blade life and preserve your vis-ibility:

• Clean your windshield at every fi ll-up.

• Wipe the rubber blade with a damp paper towel to re-move loose dirt.

• Never use windshield wip-ers to remove ice from your windshield. The stress can damage the blade as well as the motor. Use an ice scraper or defroster.

• In the winter, pull up wip-ers to prevent the squeegee from icing and sticking to the glass.

• Use a quality washer sol-vent; cheap ones are full of alcohol, which dries the rubber.

(NAPS)—Many drivers fi nd that if they want to make their car last, it pays to put it fi rst. Taking good care of your car means you are more likely to avoid problems, both now, while you’re driving it, and later, when you sell it.

To improve the life of your vehicle and its price at resale, it’s a good idea to get it serviced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be highlighted on a Carfax Report as a “well maintained” vehicle. Keep track of the service history so you can prove you did the right thing to prospective buyers.
