THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joy-ful Noise was a contempo-rary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young peo-ple, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will cul-minate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forev-er impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us dur-ing our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL

NON-PROFITCAPITAL REGION – Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-pri-oritize. What better way than to begin a new volunteer opportunity! I am I can, a mentor-ing program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your stu-dent on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please visit our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at [email protected].

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

This is the time of year when gardeners get to reap the rewards of all the effort put forth in spring. There are vegetables to harvest and enjoy and flowers to admire and cut for bouquets. This is what it’s all about. Sure, there’s weed to pull here and there’s watering to do but, basically, these are the days we like to step back and smell the roses. During this quiet time, I’ll take a bit of a break too and let you (hopefully) enjoy the little story of how I was introduced to the Amaranthus family. One day many years ago, I was telling my girlfriend (now wife) Sharon about an Italian lady in Mont Pleasant who used to sell plants from her backyard garden and small greenhouse. The last time I’d been there was in the late 70s. It seemed unlikely that she was still at it but we decided to see if we could find it. Amazingly we did and, as I’d expected, it wasn’t really a going concern. I knocked on the door and the quiet old gardener answered the door. Sure, we could look around even though there wasn’t much left to see. Well, there was enough to see that we ended up picking her brain for 45 minutes. We bought a Voodoo lily and she let us harvest the seed pods of the purple malva that was growing everywhere. Just before we left I asked her about the large purple plants that were overgrowing a neglected raised bed. “You want some amaranth? Sure.” she said as she ripped a few of the 3’ plants out by the roots and rolled them up in some newspaper. Since it was a midsummer day of about 90 degrees, I was amazed by this rough treatment by someone who, it seemed, should know better. She must have picked up on the concerned look on my face, “You pop ‘em in and water ‘em, they’ll be fine.” We thanked her for letting us look about and for the plants and departed. By the time we got home, the bare root amaranthus were a wilted mess. “Pop ‘em in and water ‘em, they’ll be fine.” Seemed wildly optimistic at that point but, I did as I was instructed. After I’d popped them into a whiskey barrel planter, I soaked the soil and sprayed the foliage with water (which you know I HATE to do). Almost as an afterthought, I poked some stakes into the soil and tossed some burlap over them to shade them from the hot afternoon sun. ‘Oh well,’ I thought, ‘I can always throw them out tomorrow.’ The next morning, I was out in the yard putzing about with some other garden chore when I remembered the sad amaranthus in the barrel. ‘Might as well toss them in the compost pile.’ I thought. When I flipped the burlap back, lo and behold, the amaranthus looked as if it had been growing in the barrel all summer! This little experience taught me two valuable lessons. First, when an old Italian gardener tells you something, believe it! Second, for a durable, 3’ purple annual, nothing beats amaranthus. So, we enjoyed our barrel full of amarnathus for the rest of the summer and even saved some of the seeds. Sharon started a couple of dozen under the grow lights the following March so we’d be able to enjoy them for another season. They sprouted quickly and grew like weeds. Perhaps it was an omen. By the time planting season came around, the amaranthus were out of control in their little plastic packs. Even with all the ripping and tearing I had to do to separate them, they recovered nicely and took off like a shot once they were in the ground. By mid-June, it was apparent that there had been no need to start any indoors. The barrel they had been planted in the year before was choked with “volunteers”. Not only that, they were sprouting in the cracks between the patio pavers and in the lawn in a 4’ radius all around the barrel. As the season progressed, I began to notice them popping up in all sorts of odd places throughout the yard and gardens. I could only assume that the birds had had a hand in all this. With so many seedlings, I’ve been able to experiment. Purple amaranthus are a great contrast to the taller artemisia’s silver foliage. I’ve planted them around the base of my 3’ purple cannas for a “wall of purple”. Since I love silver, blue and purple in the garden, I’ve had a great time with my self-sowing purple amaranthus. Imagine how enthused I was when I saw something called ‘Elephant Head Amaranthus’ in a seed catalog. More next week. This all occurred about 20 years ago and I’m still enjoying the amaranthus and the malva (Zebrina as it turns out) in my 2015 garden. Thanks for the read.

Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and un-wind. But fences also may lead to disputes with neighbors if installation is not carried out with etiquette. Always place the fence within your property lines, which can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbors of your intention to erect a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outward to the street and to neighbors’ yards. In ad-dition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighborhood eyesore that irks your neighbors.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW? Feng shui is the practice of arranging a home or of-fice environment so energy flows gently and smoothly throughout the building. Many homeowners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environment that is free of stress. The basis for feng shui is that everything in a given environment has an energy known as “chi.” Proponents of feng shui believe chi not only flows through the body but also through the

environment. When a home environment negatively af-fects this flow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to health problems, financial troubles or domestic strife. This is why feng shui adher-ents do not allow clutter to accumulate in their homes, as they feel clutter can stag-nate energy flow. In addi-tion, feng shui adherents avoid homes with long, dark hallways or poorly lit stair-cases, as they feel such areas negatively affect the flow of energy in a home.

DID YOU KNOW? Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, biosol-ids are carefully treated and monitored residuals formed at sewage treatment facili-ties. They may be recycled into fertilizers to stimulate plant growth. Biosolids may help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Biosol-ids can be safe to use, but homeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have been treated to reduce the bacterial content and are ap-proved for use in production agriculture. Home garden-ers may want to avoid bio-solids in vegetable gardens because of the potential for heavy metal content seep-ing into the produce.

REDUCE PESTICIDE POLLUTION AT HOMECommercial farms are often blamed for the vast array of contaminants that find their way into water supplies and the soil itself. But home-gardening enthusiasts may also be contaminating water and soil through the use of pesticides.

Data from Green-NetWorld, an environmental advocacy group, indicates Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Pesticide use is a pro-lific problem. More than 100 active pesticide ingredients are suspected of causing cancer, gene mutations and birth defects. In addition, a growing list of pesticides may disrupt the immune and endocrine systems and have long-term impacts on infants and young chil-dren. Research indicates that many pests targeted by pesticides will eventually develop resistance to these pesticides, rendering the chemicals useless.

One way to reduce chemical pollution at home is to find alternatives to pesticides. • Investigate reduced-risk pesticides. The United States Environmental Protection Agency is examining pesti-cides that pose less risk to humans and the environ-ment than existing pesti-cides. Homeowners con-cerned about pesticides can visit www.epa.gov to learn more about reduced-risk pesticides. • Use biopesticides. Biologi-cal products, also known as biopesticides, can play a role in a more sustainable food chain. These control agents include fungi, bacteria or viruses and can be applied like chemical pesticides but do not leave toxic residues. Furthermore, they are rela-tively inexpensive to pro-duce.• Look to the kitchen. Dish soap can be an effective pest killer. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray

around the exterior of your house and on plants that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small flying insects.

Catnip is another natural pesticide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosqui-toes.• Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt on the leaves of

plants in the garden can keep away animals, such as deer or groundhogs, that would otherwise de-vour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs

and snails.

Before homeowners turn to chemical pesticide applica-tions, they can explore many natural remedies to keep un-wanted pests at bay.

HOME ADDITIONS: UP OR OUT?Homeowners hoping to ex-pand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the fi rst they will have to make is which direc-tion to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, increas-ing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.

Professionals urge prospec-tive remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each expansion option, including which direction to build.

One of the fi rst consider-ations is land space. Build-

ing horizontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another fea-ture. Proximity to neighbors and the dimensions of your property will also help to de-termine if expanding hori-zontally is a good idea.

Building codes and neigh-borhood requirements also must be considered before making any renovations. Some municipalities may have rules in place that gov-ern renovations. Add-ons may not be allowed to ex-

ceed certain height limits, nor may structures be built within a certain number of feet of property lines.

Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to contend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the prem-ises at a certain point. Also, extensive renovation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether it’s to shore up the structure, clean up after the renova-tion or repair ceilings, dry-wall and other components where levels meet.

It may seem easier to ex-pand outward, but this requires laying additional foundation for the new

building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be necessary if your home is structurally sound and can bear the weight of the addition.

Building out typically in-volves the least disruption to your life and the existing space. Homeowners should keep in mind that any reno-vation will require permits or variances. In addition, if the project increases the value of the home, home in-surance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin. Homeowners need to consider whether to build up or out when they

add on to homes.

Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier life-style. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon trans-form into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several win-dows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their energy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggish-ness, which can compro-mise workout routines. In addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unneces-sary items that will only be a distractions during work-outs. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mir-ror, which can help men and women focus on their move-ments and ensure they are performing exercises cor-rectly. Homeowners build-ing a home gym also should consider fi nding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on ellipti-cal machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeowners should con-nect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to fi nd space for a mini refrigerator in the gym,

which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a workout.

A fl at roof is more prone to leakage than other roofs, so homeowners may need to routinely inspect their fl at roofs for any areas of water penetration. Another way to prevent leaks is to install gutter systems correctly. Gutters should not be hung completely level, but angled toward the roof’s downspouts and drains. This angle will better facilitate water fl ow. fl ow.

WATERING TIPS TO PRODUCE HEALTHY LAWNS

Summer is a season for land-scaping, and homeowners who live in regions that get especially hot in the sum-mertime often worry that their lawns won’t make it through the dog days of summer looking lush. But lawns don’t have to suc-cumb to the sizzling sum-mer sun. Oftentimes, the right watering strategies can help homeowners nurse their lawns through the hot-test months of the year, en-suring the lawns make it to autumn looking as green as they did back at the height of spring.

• Reconsider when you’re watering. Come summer-time, homeowners may want a glass of water at high noon, when temperatures seem to be at their hottest. But you and your lawn are different, so the best time to satiate your thirst is not necessarily the best time to water your lawn. Watering in the middle of the day is often ineffective, as water tends to evaporate quickly in the afternoons when tempera-tures are peaking. Nighttime watering can contribute to the growth of fungus, which can create an entirely new set of headaches for home-owners. Morning watering sessions tend to be most ef-fective during the summer-time, as temperatures tend to be cooler in the morning, leading to less evaporation. Less evaporation means all that watering isn’t going to waste.• Reconsider your sprinkler. If you can’t afford an in-ground irrigation system, which many landscaping professionals feel is the most effective and efficient way to water a lawn, then you likely will rely on a sprinkler to keep your lawn looking lush through the summer months. When choosing a sprinkler, look for one that shoots water out horizontal-ly as opposed to vertically. A vertical sprinkler system is more vulnerable to wind and evaporation than one

that shoots water out hori-zontally, so make sure your sprinkler system is sending water into your lawn and not into summer breezes.

• Avoid overwatering. How much water your lawn needs in the summertime depends on a host of factors, includ-ing where you live and how often rain falls in that region. Overwatering can promote the growth of fungus and adversely affect your lawn’s root system, making it diffi-cult for roots to grow deep. Speak with a local landscap-ing professional to deter-mine how often you should water your lawn each week.

• Strategically position your sprinklers. When choosing where to put down your sprinklers, hook them up to your hose, turn them on and then watch to see where the water is going. Areas that exposed to sun

are most in need of water, so make sure the bulk of your water isn’t going to shaded areas beneath trees. In ad-dition, make sure you aren’t wasting water on sidewalks, patios and driveways. Sprin-klers should be positioned so none of the water they’re shooting out is landing on surfaces that don’t need water. It sounds simple, but too often homeowners drop their sprinklers down, turn them on and then walk away without waiting to see where the water is landing. Position sprinklers or adjust sprinkler heads so all the wa-ter is landing on your lawn.

Keeping a lawn lush and green at the height of sum-mer requires homeowners to adopt effective strategies. Such a strategies can make the difference between a lush landscape and one that succumbs to summer heat.
