LATISHA KOETTING/DEMOCRAT Emma Kostopolus teaches Girl Scouts from the area about the country of Egypt at Thinking Day 2012 at First Christian Church on Feb. 23. Though Emma Kostopo- lus, of Sedalia, is a busy col- lege student, she makes time to help some special girls. Kostopolus joined Girls Scouts when she was in kindergarten. She feels Scout- ing is a good opportunity for girls to learn new things and to make new friends. Despite the fun she was having when she was young, she quit Girl Scouts in the fifth grade be- cause several of her friends were older and were in differ- ent troops. “A lot of people really don’t realize scouting contin- ues after the fifth grade,” she said. However, she found she missed it and returned as a volunteer a few years later. She has gone on to receive the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. This is the equivalent to Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. “Scouting is important for older girls so they can de- velop leadership skills and get experience that can be used in other areas of their lives,” she said. About 5.5 percent of eligi- ble Girl Scouts achieve this award. Girls must do 50 hours of leadership either in Girl Scouts or in the community. She earned her Silver Award by helping the Brownies. “Those girls became Jun- iors and I decided to step up and lead the troop,” she said. Every Thursday night she meets with the girls of Troop 290 for 90 minutes. She plans the programs and activities for the troop. Destiny Clancy, 10, of Sedalia, is one of the girls Kostopolus works with. Des- tiny said having her as a leader was amazing and it changed her life. She had been thinking about quitting but Kostopolus made scout- ing fun and made her feel special. “She’s trying so hard. She’s coming down here all the way from college to help us learn stuff that some peo- ple have never learned be- fore,” Destiny said. Alexis Bassett, 11, another Junior said having Kostopolus as a leader “means that I know that we’re going to have fun no matter what we do.” While at the helm this year, there was something special Kostopolus desired. “I wanted my girls to do Thinking Day,” she said. “I remember Thinking Day as one of my favorite activities when I was about their age. I wanted them to get experi- ence in taking charge and helping girls their own age and younger.” Thinking Day is a celebra- tion where girls plan activi- ties with global themes. The girls of Troop 290 each picked a country and taught other Scouts about their coun- tries through cuisine, crafts and facts. “It’s a lot to ask of fourth and fifth-graders,” she said. “I think they did wonder- fully.” Besides the leadership hours, Kostopolus also had to do a community service proj- ect to get her Gold Award. She did a community-wide literacy drive in the fall of 2011. She had drop boxes at several libraries and churches and collected 700 books which she gave to the Sedalia School District 200. “The Gold Award is a lot of work, but it’s really re- warding. It’s nice to know that I gave back to the school district that I was once a stu- dent in,” Kostopolus said. She also mentioned how the award looks good on col- lege applications and can help with scholarships. Kostopolus graduated from Smith-Cotton in December and is attending the University of Central Missouri. She is double ma- joring in philosophy and mathematics. Though she doesn’t know what her schedule will be next semester, she would like to keep working with the Girl Scouts in some capacity. As for the girls in Troop 290, she would like to see them all continue with scouting and become active leaders. “I would like to see them get their Silver and Gold awards ideally one day,” she said. “I know if she can work hard enough to do it, that I can too,” said Alexis. Women Rising: How WomenWill Learn, Work and Start

Businesses In The 21st Century(NAPS)—Women have become more vital to America’s prosper-

ity than ever. Without their activity in the U.S. workforce, the econ-omy would shrink by 25 percent.

A new book by the vice president and managing director ofApollo Research Institute finds that women’s contributions to man-agement, small business and job creation are at an all-time high. In“Society 3.0: How TechnologyIs Reshaping Education,Work and Society,” Dr. TraceyWilen-Daugenti describeshow women’s changing rolesand rising rates of education-al achievement are helpingthem master the challenges ofcareer while maintainingwork/life balance.

A former Silicon Valleyexecutive, Dr. Wilen-Daugenti says that morewomen leaders are emergingas societal perceptions evolve.Rising numbers of Americans now believe women should be themajor family breadwinner, she writes, and men are assuming a fair-er share of home and family duties to compensate.

Although women still earn only 77 percent of what their malecolleagues earn for comparable work, they bring home 44 percent ofU.S. household income. They fared better than men during theGreat Recession, however, with only 25 percent of layoffs affectingfemale employees. And women-owned firms are responsible forover 23 million jobs and $3 trillion in annual economic impact.

Women are finding creative ways to bust stereotypes whilelaunching satisfying careers. Self-employment is one path; 35 per-cent of all solo entrepreneurs are women, and their numbers areincreasing by 23 percent annually. “Women can also stand out byentering traditionally male-dominated careers such as science, engi-neering and computer technology, where salaries happen to behighly competitive,” Dr. Wilen-Daugenti says.

Education is helping to close the gap. Women are now earningmore higher degrees than men. And more female managers holdbachelor’s or master’s degrees than do male managers. “Thesetrends position women to prevail in a competitive future,” says Dr.Wilen-Daugenti.

Q: I am so happy that USANetwork's"Fairly Legal" is finally back for an-other season. Can you give me any scoopfor season two? -- Violet F., via e-mail

A: I spoke with "Fairly Legal" co-starVirginia Williams, who plays Lauren Reedon the hit legal drama, and she gave mesome spoilers.

"We get to see more facets of Laurenthis year, which is great," Virginia said."We get to see her at home, for example.Everything still revolves around Reed &Reed, but we do see glimpses of Lauren athome: coming back from a jog, going on adate, having some sort of a life outsidework. We get to see her with her hair down, literally and figuratively. She's still quiteguarded and protective and exacting andstylish and brilliant, but she's a lot morecomfortable with her position now.

"Last season was all about Lauren prov-ing to everyone else that she was capableand that she wasn't just a trophy wife," shesaid. "She could get the job done and couldlead the firm. This season we see that shenot only is extremely capable, but the firmends up being better off than it was evenbefore Teddy died."

***Q: I heard that there is going to be

another singing-competition show airingthis summer, I think on ABC? Can youtell me about it? -- Clark F., via e-mail

A: "Duets" is the latest vocal-competi-tion show to hit the small screen, and it isindeed airing on ABC. Currently lookingfor contestants (abc.com/casting), this showstars Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Li-onel Richie and Robin Thicke, who willtravel the country looking for undiscoveredtalent to be their proteges, as well as duet

partners.***

Q: I still miss seeing Leah Remini on"The Talk." Any chance she'll return? --Hazel D., Akron, Ohio

A: Not if Sharon Osbourne has any say,and it appears she does. Leah told fans onTwitter that "Sharon thought me and Holly[Robinson Peete] were 'ghetto' (her words),we were not funny, awkward and didn'tknow ourselves ... She had us fired."

Understanding how current of air affects wildlife key

to successI hate wind. I do understand that the movement of air from

areas of high barometric pressure to low ones isan essential component of keeping our planetinhabitable.

But wind haunts my fishing and hunting somuch that I think it has to be deliberate.

I suppose I could stay home when trees withtrunks I can’t begin to reach around are swaying.

That’s what I usually did back when I waswriting full time.

Nowadays, time devoted to other interests inaddition to writing has forced me to look forways to cope with conditions I once wrote off asintolerable.

When fishing from the bank, a small- tomedium-sized stream — preferably one with-out channels — provides enough protectionfrom the ill effects of high winds to minimizeany need to compromise with the elements.

These streams can be refuges for anglers whoprefer to fish from boats.

Anglers who prefer to anchor crosswise to thecurrent may be limited to areas where the windand the current are moving in the same direction.

Ponds and small impoundments with goodaccess for bank anglers are great places to fish onwindy days.

Since protected coves, points and windblownshorelines will be within walking distance ofeach other, it doesn’t take long to determinewhere most of the body of water’s active fish areholding.

Or at least it doesn’t if the angler equips himor herself with lures suited for use under adverseconditions.

For example, no one other than a bona fideexpert should attempt to use a fly rod anytimewind speeds reach double digits.

The same could be said for casting light, bulkylures. Instead, stick with jigs, inline spinnerbaitsand streamlined crankbaits.

Unless the fish are really biting — which theysometimes are — boating on a major reservoirwhen wind speeds exceed about 20 mph isn’tmuch fun for the passenger, and it’s no fun forthe person operating the boat.

Given that the boat is up to the task, it can bedone by preplanning launch sites as close to thearea to be fished as possible.

Although I’ve done it before and probablywill again, I can’t in good conscience recom-mend boating on a large river on a windy day.

Travel can be deceptively easy on stretcheswhere the direction of the wind and the currentare the same, but around the next bend may be astretch where the wind and the water are movingin opposite directions.

This creates large waves, the crests of whichare much closer together than they would beunder similar conditions on a lake.

As a general rule, land animals share myopinion of wind.

Deer, for example, depend on their senses of

scent, hearing and sight for both communicationand survival.

As wind speeds increase, scent disperses inunpredictable patterns, hearing becomesimpaired and moving vegetation confusesvision.

Moderate winds shift deer into protected val-leys and downwind slopes, but they may remainactive.

High winds cause deer to hole up in the heav-iest available cover where they often remainimmobile even when closely approached byhunters.

I’ve personally observed squirrels misjudgeleaps from one tree to another and wind upfalling unceremoniously to the forest floor.

They give every indication they didn’t enjoythe experience.

Limbs being whipped back and forth by highwinds add all but impossible complications tosomething that must be difficult under the bestcircumstances even for natural acrobats.

Squirrel hunting when the winds exceed 25mph is usually futile, because the animals willstay in their dens all day.

If the high winds persist for several days, hunger will force the squirrels to make brief for-ays for food, but they’ll spend most of their timeclose to or on the ground and will be exception-ally wary.

From a hunter’s perspective, the way birdsrespond to wind varies with species.

In the spring, male turkeys are so preoccupiedby the urge to breed that they may respond to thefact that high winds make it harder for them to beseen or heard by prospective mates back in thetimber that they spend more time in open fields.

Unfortunately, they instinctively know thatthe sound of their gobbles won’t carry as far as itwould under calm conditions, so it’s difficult toget them to move away from their display areaeven in response to a call.

Waterfowl can be an exception to the rule thatwind is detrimental to success outdoors.

Migrating flocks ride the strong north windsthat often accompany cold fronts.

By the time these birds reach Missouri, they’re ready to find a place to feed and rest.

Crop fields and flooded oak flats provide theformer and protected pockets on bodies of waterof every type and size provide the latter.

Well, I’ve managed to fill my allotted spacewith ways to make fishing and hunting if not bet-ter then at least possible when the wind’s howl-ing.

So have I changed my mind? Let me put itthis way: I hate wind.
