Café worker Chase Johnson has appetite for volunteering Chase Johnson was spending his last official day at the Community Café rolling plastic sil- verware. As the diners came in around 4:30 p.m., Johnson smiled at them as he said hello. Some he recognized as regulars, others he hadn’t seen before. “I think the most im- portant thing about work- ing here is remembering that everyone deserves respect,” Johnson said. “They may be having a hard time right now, but we can give them a good meal and sometimes that’s all you need to feel better.” Johnson, who gradu- ated from Smith-Cotton High School Saturday, has been volunteering at the Community Café since his sophomore year. When he’s not at the café, he’s working as a host at Colton’s Steakhouse, par- ticipating in National Honor Society, DECA, math or science clubs, or playing basketball with his younger brother. But volunteering is where his heart is. “Some nights we’ll have more than 100 peo- ple show up for dinner, other nights is only 60,” he said. “It can be a little crazy, especially if I’m the only one here, but it’s really rewarding.” Salome Taylor, or “Ms. Taylor” as she’s known around the café, said Johnson “has a good heart in him. In the two years I’ve known him he always treats the people here like they’re human beings. He doesn’t over- look them and always chats with them.” In the fall, Johnson will attend State Fair Community College and take classes at the Uni- versity of Central Mis- souri. He plans to be a high school or college math teacher, though he doesn’t plan on quitting volunteering anytime soon. “It’s going to be really busy in the fall with col- lege,” he said. “But I don’t think I’ll ever stop volunteering. A good friend of mine is taking over as the student leader here so I know I’ll be back to see everyone and roll some silverware.” Johnson said he would miss the people at the café most, Taylor espe- cially. “You meet a lot of peo- ple here and get to know their stories,” he said. “Before I started volun- teering, I didn’t know what an impact a simple thing like a hot meal could have. But everyone is so appreciative and it really effects you.” Taylor said she’d miss Johnson’s work ethic, noting he often came in if no one else was avail- able. “If he wasn’t working (at Colton’s) he was here,” she said. “He’s al- ways willing to lend a hand or help if needed.” “I don’t think volun- teering is something I re- ally set out to do,” Johnson said. “I just sort of fell into it and really loved it.” By Emily Jarrett SYDNEY BRINK/DEMOCRAT Smith-Cotton High School seniors Chase Johnson, left, and Kourtlyn Henderson, rustle up some more drinks for late arrivals to the Com- munity Cafe after packaging some bagged meals near the end of a shift in January at the cafe, 417 W. “Be Burn Aware”(NAPS)—Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every

year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could havebeen easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is addressing this issue by focusing its annualyearlong burn awareness campaign on teaching children to “Be Burn Aware,” espe-cially at home.

“At Shriners Hospitals for Children, preventing burn injuries and providingburn awareness education is an ongoing, yearlong effort,” said Peter Armstrong,M.D., chief medical officer, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Our campaign, ‘BeBurn Aware,’ focuses on teaching children ways to avoid burn injuries at home.”

The campaign introduces two new child-friendly characters—Boots andBrewster—a caped, cuddly bear and a goo-gly-eyed teapot. The engaging duo is fea-tured in activity books designed for childrenages 3 to 12, and also a poster. In the materi-als, the pair leads children through the vari-ous rooms of a house, pointing out dangersand how to easily correct or avoid them.

The new materials are available at nocharge in both English and Spanish atwww.burnawareness.org.

Tips to Keep Children Safe• Use electrical outlet covers.• Have an escape plan, including two

exits from each room, in place. Practiceusing the plan. Have a designated meetingplace at a safe distance from the home.

• Install an appropriate number ofsmoke detectors—one near each bedroom, one at the top of each stairway and one near the planned escape route.

• Teach your children that matches are not toys.• Store all flammable liquids, chemicals and cleaners out of reach of children or

lock the cabinet.• Replace damaged electrical cords.• Do not leave lighted candles unattended.• Always supervise children in the bath.• The water in a child’s bath should not exceed 104° F. Set your water heater no

higher than 120° F.• Keep all hot items and anything electrical out of reach of children and away

from edges of tables and counters.• Keep pot handles turned inward; use oven mitts or pot holders. Keep clothing

from coming into contact with flames or heating elements.• Follow instructions and cautions for heating items in a microwave oven.• Do not handle hot items while holding young children.Shriners Hospitals for Children is a system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improv-

ing the lives of children. Four of the hospitals are focused specifically on pediatricburn care. Anyone concerned with keeping children safe can visit www.burnaware-ness.org for important burn prevention tips and information on how to order thefree materials, in English or Spanish.

For more information on Shriners Hospitals for Children’s pediatric specialtycare, visit www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.

My favorite pond has been yielding bluegillplenty big enough to filet for the 20-odd yearsI’ve been fishing it.

The last time I visited it, I tied on aweighted black wooly worm just as I haveevery other time I’ve been there.

But this time something was different. Nomatter whether I cast close to shore or towardthe middle of the pond — I can toss a fly a longway if I want to — only rarely did a keeperbluegill suck in my offering.

I stuck to my guns for 45 minutes and mightnot have stopped then had I not come to a sec-tion of the pond where trees on the bank madeconventional fly fishing difficult.

A light spinning outfit rigged with a 1-16th-ounce inline spinnerbait was close at hand, so Ipicked it up and made what was by this time ahalf-hearted cast.

A jumbo bluegill inhaled the little spinner-bait. My second cast produced the same result.

Then the bass took over. This pond’s bassare an exceptionally vicious lot, and it’s impos-sible to keep them off anything that shines orgurgles.

This wouldn’t be a day-ruiner for most peo-ple, but when I’m fishing for bluegill, I want tocatch bluegill.

Thirty minutes, 10 bass and only four morebluegill later, I stopped to think things through.

The most significant difference between thespinnerbait and the weighted fly was that theformer stayed at roughly the same depth duringthe retrieve and the latter didn’t.

I switched to an unweighted wooly worm, and the battle with the pond’s super bluegillbegan in earnest. I went home a happy anglerindeed.

I didn’t coin the term “one method Pete,”but, like many of you, I do have specific fishingtactics I sometimes overuse.

Weighted black wooly worms are only thetip of the iceberg.

Crappie fishing in the spring means sus-pending a black/chartreuse tube jig beneath afloat, and crappie fishing in the summer meanstight-lining minnows directly beneath the boat.

Round one with black bass is going to befought with either a white spinnerbait or a black6-inch plastic worm.

My catfish angling efforts replace what withwhere and when, namely in a river or streamwater level’s rising.

Using a scoped .22 rifle for squirrels and a.410 shotgun for rabbits are the only two one-method Petes I have when hunting season rollsaround. They are absolute even when I knowsome other method might put more game in thebag.

In one method Pete’s defense, every out-doorsman’s first-out strategy achieved that sta-

tus, because he or she can make it work farmore often than not. It really does make senseto start the day with something you have time-proven confidence in.

The problem with one method Pete is he’sall too often hard to put aside. That was myproblem on my bluegill fishing trip. Standingon that pond bank, I was — or should havebeen — well aware that big male bluegill areeither actively feeding or else guarding theirnests from dawn until dusk at this time of theyear.

On such familiar water, it shouldn’t havetaken me more than 10 minutes tops to figureout that there was something wrong with theway I was presenting my fly.

To make matters worse — or at least moreembarrassing — I had the means to defeat one-method Pete syndrome within easy reach.

I’ve always been afraid that it might be ille-gal to have only one rod and reel in one’s pos-session when in, on or near any body of water.

On this occasion, the fly rod I most wantedto use and the aforementioned spinning outfitweren’t the options I should have tried longbefore I did.

There was also a custom made outfit con-sisting of an 8-foot fly rod blank fitted with aspinning reel handle and guides laying in thegrass beside my tackle shoulder bag.

For bluegill, I use this combo to cast a flysuspended beneath a small float into the wind.(For the record, I know how to use a conven-tional fly rod to punch a fly into the wind, butit’s hard work, which is something I try hard toavoid while fishing.)

Unfortunately, in the grand old tradition ofdo as I say, not as I do, I’d tied an identicalweighted black wooly worm to the terminal endof the hybrid rig. Switching fly rods taught meabsolutely nothing about why I wasn’t catchingfish.

Looking back on that morning and countlessothers like it, I can’t help but reach a couple ofconclusions.

One of them is that, while one class of rodand reel is sometimes superior to another on agiven day, deciding to stubbornly stick withwhat you want to use is seldom the primarycause of a fishless outing.

The other is that being stubborn about thesize, color, style or any other characteristic ofthe lure you choose or neglecting to vary theway you present that lure can make all the dif-ference no matter what species of fish you hopeto catch.

Now if I can only remember them at leastuntil my next fishing trip.

Q:When will my favorite show,"Rizzoli & Isles," be back with newepisodes? -- Fred D., via e-mail.A: Angie Harmon and Sasha

Alexander will return for their thirdseason as Det. Jane Rizzoli and Dr.Maura Isles, respectively, on Tuesday,June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The highlyrated TNT series will air 15 all-newepisodes. And if you need to catch upon seasons one and two -- or just re-fresh your memory -- both are nowavailable on DVD for your viewingpleasure.

***Q: I signed that petition you men-

tioned in a previous column to helpkeep "AGifted Man" on the air,and I was wondering if it helped? Will CBS renew it? --Bonnie A.,Norfolk, Va.A: Sometimes online petitions work

("Friday Night Lights," "Jericho" and"Chuck" were saved from early cance-lation by rabid Internet campaigns),and sometimes they don't. In the caseof "A Gifted Man," it didn't; CBS de-cided not to renew the drama for a sec-ond season. Also on CBS's choppingblock: "CSI: Miami," "Rob," "Unfor-gettable" and "NYC 22."

***Q: For the longest time, I couldn't

even find "Cougar Town" on the TVschedule, then it returned, and nowI hear it's been canceled. Is thattrue? -- Stacie R., St. Paul, Minn.A: While it's true that ABC has

opted not to renew "Cougar Town" fora fourth season, Courteney Cox andgang will indeed be back for a newseason -- TBS has picked up the seriesand will begin airing new episodes inearly 2013. As of now, it's assumedthat all cast members will be makingthe move with the show to TBS. How-ever, Dan Byrd had already booked arole on the new untitled Louis CK sit-com pilot, and Josh Hopkins was set tostar in NBC's "Lady Friends." Both

shows will have to recast now that"Cougar Town" is going forward."Cougar Town" is the latest project

to join TBS's growing slate of originalseries. In July, TBS will launch "Sulli-van & Son," a new sitcom starring co-median Steve Byrne andexecutive-produced by Vince Vaughn,Peter Billingsley and Rob Long. Thisyear also will include the debut of"Wedding Band," a new scripted com-edy series starring Brian Austin Green,Harold Perrineau, Peter Cambor,Derek Miller, Melora Hardin, JennyWade and Kathryn Fiore.

***Q: Can you tell me what Ving

Rhames is doing now? I haven'tseen him in anything in a while. --Derek L., via e-mailA: Ving is all set to star in the new

David E. Kelley medical drama that isslated to premiere on TNT in summer2013. The series, called "MondayMornings," is based on the book byneurosurgeon and CNN chief medicalcorrespondent Dr. Sanja Gupta, M.D.The show is set in the fictionalChelsea General Hospital in Portland,Ore., and Ving plays the hospital'strauma chief. It also stars AlfredMolina, Jennifer Finnegan and BillIrwin.
