Let it snow….please!
According to Environment Canada, Lake Ontario is 23cm lower than the 100-year average
and a further 24cm lower than last year. We need one of those good old-fashioned winters that most of us
remember from childhood with loads of snow and cold weather. I never thought I would say this, but bring
on the snow!

From the Bridge…
Exciting New Year!
Happy New Year and we trust everyone had a Merry Christmas with friends and family over the
holiday season.
Well we are into a new year with a new Executive with lots of new and interesting ideas to enhance
the value for your membership in your yacht club. The first few months have always laid the
ground work for the coming season. However, it may take us a little longer to set some things in
motion. While extremely competent, your Executive is in need of time to work out some of the
kinks with these eager people. Procedures and past history are important to maintain and reflect on
experiences. Plus with time commitments we are juggling some of the job functions to make it
easier on the Executive member. However, this will not take us long as we will have had two
meetings by mid-January.
The Executive is evaluating our social program for 2013. We may stop doing certain activities and
it is hoped to have a few new ones start. If you have any ideas or comments, please forward them
on to Tracy Russell, Social Director, or myself.
We are in the process of redesigning the membership form. We want to get it to one page and we
are in need of membership support for our activities. It is hoped to have it posted on the website by
mid month.
Please remember to check in on the website for our calendar events. Garry Cooke is planning on
having Pub Nights again and Outdoor Day is scheduled for February 3rd. Yes it is a week earlier in
hopes we will have ice on the pond for a game of shinny and pleasure skating.
I am certain we all have the Toronto Boat Show marked on our calendars. Please take a moment to
drop by our advertisers' booths to say hello. Remember that The Store was purchased by Fogh
Marine last year and Morten Fogh is renewing advertising this year. Other advertisers that you
may see at the boat show are Bridge Yachts, Sea Tech Marine, Klacko, Natural Marine, and North
South Nautical Group.
We would be remiss if we did not thank our other advertisers. They are Above the Waterline,
SeaShell Services, Dundee Private Investments (Joe Lindo and Joe D'Aurizio), The Landing,
Investors Group (Glen Weatherdon), Royal Lepage (Nicole and Gary Vandervelde), and Park
Place.
Remember members can advertise free in Scuttlebutt, so if you are looking to buy or sell, please
take advantage of this perk.

Thank you to everyone who contacted me with their favourite applications. Keep those
ideas coming!
DragQueen
DragQueen is a simple to use anchor alarm. It provides both distance and GPS accuracy
alarms along with an alarm delay. The alarm is loud and has an
annoying tone that will hopefully wake you at night if your anchor
starts dragging. This application is available in both Apple and
Android versions which allows it to be used on a number of
devices. I have read some reviews that recommend that you have a
clear view of the sky when setting the alarm, but please make sure
you check your volume settings and have plenty of battery left on
your device before trusting it completely. You may also want to
have a back-up anchor alarm before trying any new application for
the first time. This app is used by quite a few of our members and is
available free from the itunes store and is developed by the
ActiveCaptain people (more on this couple in a future Scuttlebutt).
ShipFinder
Ever wonder what the name is of that Freighter or Tanker that you
can see in the distance when you go over the bridge or are out sail-
ing in the Lake? Well, I would recommend ShipFinder to tell you
the name, stats and destination of any of the large commercial ves-
sels out on the lake. This applica-
tion is consistently ranked in the
top 10 of navigation apps and is
very easy to use. The App offers
live tracking in many ports world-
wide. Allows you to see ship route
trails and will also display pictures
of the ships. I have found this App
to be quite accurate and informa-
tive.
Available for $4.99 from the App store. Compatible with
the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Requires IOS of 4.3 or
later and has been updated to allow for the iPhone 5’s big-
ger screen.

January Race Report
Garry Cooke
Another start to the boating year begins with the launch of the Toronto Boat Show from January 12th to
the 20th . I try to go every year if my work schedule permits. It is a great place to meet fellow sailors,
attend seminars and find new products on the market. In past years there have been seminars ranging
from single handed sailors, world cruisers, chartering information etc. Check out the seminar
schedule, and arrange your visit to the show to fit. This year the show has scheduled 140 seminars
including topics from ‘buying your first boat’, cruising & voyage planning, storm avoidance, children
on boats, the Volvo Ocean Race, single handed racing, electric engine conversion and more. For a
schedule of all seminars, click on the link on page 9.
The new racing rules of sailing are published this month, and will be in effect for the next few years
(2013-2016). I will likely run some discussions on the rule changes at future pub nights if there is
enough interest.
We need to confirm members participation in the coming season; would you please refer to the para-
graphs below entitled “Participation at FPYC.
GHYRA Regatta 2012-13
The GHYRA week sailing event was a large success this past year, and the wrap-up night details are
listed below. The plans for 2013 are under way for the week of July 6-11, 2013. We are looking for
volunteers from both our club and HBCN to support this event, for the annual one night stop-over at
Fifty Point. (For those of you who are not familiar with this event, it is a week-long regatta between
member clubs around the western end of Lake Ontario. There is a racing fleet as well as a cruising
fleet, and each day is a race or sail to a different club, with entertainment, food etc. provided at each
club. Go to www.ghyra.org for more information).
"GHYRA 7th Night Party" on Thursday January 17th, at The Oakville Club starting at 7pm.
Some of the highlights:
Meet up and reminisce with friends from our 2012 event;
Attend the launch announcement and find out the route, cruising and racing plans along with the
social events planned for the 2013 event;
Get access to the advance 2013 registration for 2012 participants;
Enjoy Hors’douvres along with complimentary Martini's;
Trophies on hand for photo ops with the winners, and slide show with content from the inaugural
event;
Orders will be taken for inaugural Year GHYRA Regatta Week 2012 golf shirts, samples of which
will be on hand.
Please go to the link to book your ticket, the cost is $15 per/head.

This picture was taken at high res-olution and has been cropped. The file size is several hundred
kilobytes (kb) and will show well in any publication either on the web
or in print. In order to provide a photo of this quality you should send the file as an attachment directly from your pictures directory on your hard
drive. Photo sites such as Flicker or Picasa will cut the resolution
and render your photo useless for publication.
This picture was taken at high resolution but reduced in size to about 50 kilobytes (kb) and you can see the deterioration of the
quality. When taking your pictures al-
ways use the highest resolution possible and then you can re-duce the size afterwards; you cannot increase the resolution
on a photo after the fact. Keep the pictures coming and
let us know if you need any help with resolution.
They Didn’t Use The Photo I sent In! By Paul Charles
Scuttlebutt is fortunate to receive many photographic submissions from members. Unfortunately often these photos cannot be used because the resolution is too low What is resolution? You won’t see it on your monitor but it is the number of pixels per inch in a photo that determines resolution. The higher the resolution, the clearer the photo will be in the final publication. Have a look at the two pictures below and compare for clarity and detail.

Meet your New Executive……. My name is Chris Almeida and I am one of your Cruising Directors. My wife Sarah and I have been together for 14 fantastic years and married for 7 years. We have been
sailing together since we purchased our first boat when we were 20 years old. Needless to say, sailing
has been a huge part of our lives. Our 3 year old son Miguel also loves sailing and spending time on
the boat. Miguel actually learned how to crawl on the boat while we were vacationing in the
Thousand Islands for 3 weeks in 2010.
Prior to Fifty Point, we moored our boat in Oakville and were members of OYS. We made a point to
sail over to Fifty Point a couple times a year as it truly was one of our favorite places to visit. We
have now had our boat Boa Vida III at Fifty Point for 3 years and are moored on E18.
Over the years cruising on the lake, we have made a lot of friends. So once a year I organize a cruise
with all our friends to a Yacht Club and we all sail in from different clubs around the lake and get
together for a great Portuguese feast and party! When I was approached asking if I had any interest in
joining the Executive, the Cruise Director position immediately appealed to me.
Looking forward to seeing everyone for another great boating season!
