From the Helm..A message from Commandant
Bud Albright- Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089
The Marine Barracks is now open.
By the time you read this our kitchen will be operational.
Your building committee is planning to have a pancake
breakfast each Saturday
Help will be needed. Pay attention to emails and other
forms of communication for dates & times.
We need a lot of small items for the building such as paper
towel holders and things of that nature. You can contact me
as to what we need. All donations will be appreciated.
While there are some minor items that need attention all of
the major work in getting the building livable is finished for
the winter. A committee is being formed to figure out how
and where to hang pictures and plaques. Any suggestions
from members will be welcomed. Don Myers is moving
along with getting our museum set up. If you have an inter-
est in helping with it contact Don. We do need some funds
for the museum as Don is trying to get some special items
for the museum. If you want to donate for the museum con-
tact Don.
The building will be available for rental for wedding par-
ties and things of that nature. Tom Ping will be handling
this part of the building’s operation. Contact him if you
have a need and he can give you prices and such.
Be a part of the plank owners group. If you need an appli-
cation contact me or any of the officers.
Many thanks to all of those of you who helped and donated
their time in getting the building livable. As I said in the
last newsletter I am not going to mention anyone by name
for fear of missing someone. You know who you are and
again thanks.
Rocky Kingery one of our newest members has been very
helpful in getting the building in shape. Rocky is a profes-
sional painter and drywall man. He is looking for work so if
you have some work that needs to be done contact me and I
will get you hooked up with Rocky.

From the Editor!
Hello Scuttlebutt Readers, and Happy New
Year. My name is Gary Nasby, and I am
proud to be assigned as your new Scuttlebutt
Editor. Some background on myself….. I
am married to my wife Lorraine, have 3 chil-
dren, and 10 grandchildren. I live in Lawrence with my
wife and English Bulldog, “Sarge”.
I retired from Verizon, after 38 years,
and moved here in August of 2008,
from Cleve-
land, New
York (north of Syracuse, on
Oneida lake where I lived),
when my wife’s job was trans-
ferred here. So far we find this
a great place to live.
I served in the Marine Corps from 1966-1970, stationed at
MCAS Cherry Point, NC, 2nd MAW, and at DaNang,
RVN from 9/’67– 5/’69 , 1st MAW , MOS-6234, leaving
the Marine Corps after 4 years with the Rank of SGT.
The rest of my working life was with the phone company
(AT&T,NYTEL,NYNEX,BELL-ATLANTIC,VERIZON).
Before I transferred here, I was attached to LZOLD-
CORPS 999, Camden, NY. There I held the offices of Jr.
& Sr. Vice Commandant, and at the Dept. of NY level I
was a Deputy Area Vice Commandant. I also transferred
my MODD membership from Kaskey Hayes Pound 283,
where I held the office of Smart Dog, to the Hiram Bearss
Pound 111.
So, now you know a little about me, and in the coming
months, I hope to meet many of you. Please email/snail
mail me with any stories, articles, pictures or ideas that
you would like to see in this, your newsletter at ……..

On Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 members of the James P. Farber Detach-ment #1183 answered Mayor Ballard’s call to help fight hunger in the Indianapolis area. At the Salvation Army’s tree of lights celebration, these Marines presented a token offering of a box of food, weighing about 40 pounds. In his speech, the Mayor thanked our Detachment for our continued efforts. On Saturday, we then delivered approximately $1,000.00 worth of food to serve two of the Salvation Army Centers. The Farber Detachment has run a food drive for the last three years delivering approximately 12,000 pounds of food to local pantries. Jeff Green

Plank Program “PLANK OWNERS”
Be Part of Making a Home for Marines and Family Members to Gather.
Be Part of Preserving our Heritage and Traditions Since December 1973, and the founding of the Marine Corps League Detachment in Indianapolis, it has long been a dream and goal for many long time members to create and maintain a museum and library in mid-America dedicated to Marines.
With your help we can achieve this goal The Marine Corps League of Indianapolis, in conjunction with the Marine Foundation of Central Indiana have taken on the awesome responsibility of contracting a building; this will be used as a Marine Corps His-torical and Family Center and home of the Hiram I Bearss Detachment, Marine Corps league and other Ma-rine Corps oriented organizations in Central Indiana. A Marine facility and gathering place!!! The League’s new home is at 3561 English Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. The building is being leased for three years with an option to buy at the end of the lease. While the building structure is sound, it will require some “rehabilitation and fixing-up”. Not to mention normal maintenance and operating expenses. We esti-mate that it will take a minimum of $30,000.00 for the rehabilitation and an annual budget of $20,000.00 to maintain the building. In the Unites States Naval Services, including the Marine Corps, being a “Plank Owner” is an honor, “… a “plank owner” is an individual who was a member of the crew of a ship when that ship was first commis-sioned. Today, “plank owner” is applied to members of newly commissioned units, new military bases …” Having the title of “Plank Owner” includes certain rights and privileges—including bragging rights of being part of the beginning of a new adventure for Marines in Indiana. For your generosity, you will receive an everlasting memory, as well as, the honor and title of “Plank Owner” for our new home. Your donation will help perpetuate the heritage and traditions of our Corps.

GENTEXT/REMARKS/
1. THIS ALMAR REINFORCES THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR CUSTOMS
AND TRADITIONS AND AMPLIFIES THE PROVISIONS OF THE REFER-
ENCE FOR RENDERING SALUTES AND HONORS TO THE NATIONAL
FLAG.
2. CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS PROVIDE A LINK TO THE PAST; THEY
BOND MARINES WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE WITH MARINES WHO WILL CARRY THE TORCH THROUGH THE FU-
TURE. ANY LOSS OF TRADITION OR IMPROPER OBSERVATION OF CUSTOM BLURS OUR IDENTITY AND WEAKENS
US AS AN INSTITUTION.
THROUGH THE FAITHFUL ADHERENCE BY COMMANDERS AND EACH INDIVIDUAL MARINE, WE PRESERVE OUR
IDENTITY AND REPUTATION AS A UNIQUE AND ELITE FIGHTING ORGANIZATION.
3. SALUTING. A RECENT CHANGE TO THE LAW HAS AUTHORIZED ACTIVE DUTY AND RETIRED SERVICE MEM-
BERS TO SALUTE THE NATIONAL COLORS, WHETHER COVERED OR UNCOVERED, INDOORS OR OUT. BY CUSTOM
AND TRADITION, MARINES DO NOT RENDER THE HAND SALUTE WHEN OUT OF UNIFORM OR WHEN UNCOVERED.
LET THERE BE NO CONFUSION; THAT HAS NOT CHANGED. DURING THE PLAYING OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM,
OR THE RAISING, LOWERING, OR PASSING OF THE NATIONAL FLAG, MARINES WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW NA-
VAL TRADITIONS AND THE POLICY / PROCEDURES CONTAINED IN REFERENCE (A).
SPECIFICALLY, MARINES NOT IN UNIFORM WILL FACE THE FLAG, STAND AT ATTENTION, AND PLACE THE
RIGHT HAND OVER THE HEART. IF COVERED, MARINES NOT IN UNIFORM WILL REMOVE THEIR HEADGEAR
WITH THE RIGHT HAND AND PLACE THEIR RIGHT HAND OVER THEIR HEART. WHEN THE FLAG IS NOT PRESENT,
MARINES WILL ACT IN THE SAME MANNER WHILE FACING IN THE DIRECTION OF THE MUSIC. IN CASES SUCH AS
INDOOR CEREMONIES, WHEN MARINES ARE IN UNIFORM AND UNCOVERED, THEY WILL FACE THE FLAG, OR
THE DIRECTION OF THE MUSIC WHEN THE FLAG IS NOT PRESENT, AND STAND AT ATTENTION.

Lugar, Hoosier soldier persuade Army to change burial process for enlisted soldiers
U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar, at the request of a Hoosier who has served in The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, spurred the effort for all ser-
vice members, regardless of rank, to receive full honor funerals.
Beginning in early 2009, enlisted service members will receive the same funeral honors as officers at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to the
previous rule that offered a firing party, bugler and chaplain, they also will have a caisson, band, colors team and escort platoon.
“I deeply appreciate Sergeant Durbin’s impressive service to our country and his tireless advocacy on behalf of his fellow service members,” Lugar
said while traveling in Russia. “This is an appropriate recognition for service members who have given their lives while serving our nation.”
The effort began in November 2007 when SFC Robert Durbin of Randolph County, Indiana, contacted Lugar. SFC Durbin, who has deployed five
times since September 11, 2001, requested full burial honors at Arlington for service members regardless of rank. SFC Durbin served as a Full
Honor Casket Team squad leader in The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
Through correspondence with the Army and SFC Durbin’s persistence, the Army announced the policy change on December 16, 2008 (http://
www.army.mil/-news/2008/12/16/15216-army-broadens-funeral-honors-at-arlington-for-soldiers-killed-in-action/). The Army is in charge of Arling-
ton National Cemetery.
Lugar, a former Naval intelligence officer, has strongly supported the military and veterans. In 2002, Lugar launched the Veterans History Project
in Indiana. To date, the Veterans History Project has preserved the memories of more than 8,000 Hoosier veterans in the permanent collection at the
Library of Congress – more than any other state.
