“It’s not ideal that this has happened

right on the eve of the sale, but we’re all getting through it OK,” Vandyke

said after buying the session-topping filly.

“It’s a buyers’ market at the moment because of the uncertainty and

risk.”

Vandyke approached vendor Dale Anderson of Bahrinna after

the Sebring filly failed to reach the $150,000 reserve and the trainer is

confident his purchase has the credentials to provide a significant return.

“I was waiting for the filly to hit the reserve and she never got there, so

I went and saw the owners (and bought her privately),” he said.

“If she went through a

January sale, she would have

brought a lot more. She’s a

quality filly and you have got to

love the Sebrings.

“The possibilities for the

return on a Magic Millions QTIS

filly is greater than almost any

other sale because QTIS is an

amazing scheme…especially for

a filly.

“On top of that, we have got

the Magic MIllions races (that

she is eligible for). She is a beautiful filly out of a stakes-performed mare

and I think she’s good buying at that price.

“I haven’t syndicated her yet, so there’s shares available.”

Catalogued as Lot 63, the filly is the first foal out of the Tony Gollan-

trained Nudgee Stakes (Listed, 1200m)-winning mare Tina Melina (Jet

Spur) who was successful six times in 17 race starts.

His stable star Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) had also been passed in at

the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“And so was Yankee Rose, my other best

horse,” Vandyke added.

The QTIS sale, operating under remarkable circumstances, reverted

back to similar figures achieved in 2017 where the average was $28,412

and the median was $20,500 at the completion of the auction.

The 2018 sale experienced an extraordinary surge, averaging $44,832

with a median price of $25,000, which was triggered by incredible demand

for the progeny of Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) after his first crop two-year-

olds came out flying.

Last year’s sale, after 300 lots were sold, averaged $33,187 at a median

of $24,000, while yesterday’s session averaged $29,034, down 12 per cent

year on year, with a median price of $20,000 achieved. The clearance rate

was sitting at 68 per cent last night.

“Under the circumstances and in the current climate with a lack of

confidence about, for the results to hold up reasonably well, I think it was

a satisfactory day at the least,” Magic Millions managing director Barry

Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I think the vendors have come here to meet the market and do their

best to sell their horses in most cases. At times during the day they were

getting well rewarded for their sales and other times the buyers were

finding plenty of value out there.”

“From a Queensland trainers and owners’ perspective, the quality

of horse we had to sell and what these horses race for through the QTIS

scheme, it’s a huge opportunity to get in under the odds and have a lot of

fun for the next few years racing these animals.”

Magic Millions implemented procedures and strategies to ensure

the company complied with a government edict not to have more than

500 people on the complex. The general public was also banned from

attending.

“The day went very smoothly from our perspective. We took a lot of

guidance (from governing bodies) and we put a lot of measures in place

to create the right environment to hold a horse sale under the current

guidelines,” he said.

“The cooperation from the buyers and the vendors was obviously

sought after but it was greatly appreciated.”

Spirit Of Boom colts a highlight for EurekaEureka Stud, the home of Queensland’s leading stallion Spirit Of

Boom (Sequalo), sold the next two highest-priced lots yesterday, both

colts by the McAlpine family’s resident sire who sold for $130,000 and

$120,000 respectively.

Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan, who trained Group 1 winner

Spirit Of Boom, bought Lot 199 late in the day for the $130,000 figure,

with the colt carrying the same cross as his talented stakes-winning mare

Outback Barbie.

The fourth living foal for the winning mare Eureka Moment (General

Nediym), the colt is a grandson of the Group 2 winner Kapsdan (Kaapstad)

who was the joint top New Zealand filly of 2003-04. Eureka Moment’s two

foals to race, by Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) and Onemorenomore (Red

Ransom) are both winners.

Fellow Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida also struck yesterday, landing

the Eureka Stud-offered half-brother to exciting stakes-placed three-year-

old Gem Of Scotland (Rothesay) for $120,000.

The Spirit Of Boom colt’s Rex Lipp-trained half-sister has won six of

her ten starts and $415,000 in prize-money.

“I really like Spirit Of Boom as a stallion and I liked that he is a half-

brother to a Listed-placed filly, who I think is a very good horse,” Schweida

said.

“He is just a lovely horse, very athletic and I thought that was about

the right price for him.”

Catalogued as Lot 39, the colt is the fifth living foal out of the unraced

mare Star Of Kristle (General

Nediym).

As well as Gem Of Scotland,

she is also the dam of three

other winners, two of whom

have won at two. Further back,

the colt is from the same family

as champion Victorian stallion

Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and

Group 1 winner Microphone

(Exceed And Excel) who both

hail from the branch of his fourth

dam Miss Entertainer (Vain).

Schweida said the

atmosphere at yesterday’s QTIS sale was like one he had never experienced

before.

“It’s been a struggle today, given the circumstances - there was no

public allowed and it is the weirdest sale I have ever been to,” he said.

Eureka Stud’s Harry McAlpine said buyers at the complex were

willing to put their hand up but remained circumspect given the general

economic conditions that have seen billions of dollars wiped off the share

market in recent weeks.

“There were buyers here and obviously (Magic Millions) were

restricted with how many people they could have on the complex,” he

said.

“But everyone I spoke to wanted to

buy because it was good buying. However, at the same time they were

a bit apprehensive about the economics of selling them on to other

people.”

On Eureka’s two six-figure colts, McAlpine said: “I think the Gem Of

Scotland factor certainly helped as she looks quite a handy horse and he

was a lovely colt and there was plenty of competition for him.

“There was plenty of money for him (and the one Tony Gollan bought)

but some by Spirit Of Boom from the older pedigrees were a bit tough and

I think that was probably the theme of the sale.”

There were two other yearlings sold yesterday to reach the $100,000

mark, with a Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) colt from the Lyndhurst Stud draft

selling to Eagle Farm trainer Desleigh Forster.

By the same sire as this season’s boom Queensland two-year-old

Rothfire, the colt is the second living foal out of the winner Ultimate

Rush (Sequalo) who is a sister to Group 2 winner Burdekin Blues. He was

catalogued as Lot 75.

Hong Kong-owned, Victoria-based A List Stud’s Chris Lee purchased

the other $100,000 lot, a son of the Darley stallion Epaulette (Commands)

offered by Kenmore Lodge.

Catalogued as Lot 186, he is the second living foal out of the three-

time winner Dolphus (Dylan Thomas) who ran fourth in the Gold Coast

Bracelet (Listed, 1800m) as a three-year-old.

AUSTRALIA

Tagaloa on target for SlipperCo-trainer Trent Bussutin believes Blue

Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa

(Lord Kanaloa) has improved for his second

placing in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

at Randwick and is in top order for Saturday’s

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill.

"He'll strip very fit for the Slipper," Busuttin,

who trains in partnership with Natalie Young,

said. "He had one soft gallop leading into the

race after his Blue Diamond win and racing him

in the Todman means we don't have to be hard

on him. Otherwise it's a month between runs

and you're just doing it on the track. He got a

bit lost that way round so I'm certainly glad we

ran him to give him the experience under race

conditions, rather than just working him. It also

means we don't have to do too much with him

now, just keep him happy."

Thermosphere to back up at RosehillMagic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner

Thermosphere (Exosphere) will line up in the

Golden Slipper with James Cummings aiming

to repeat the double he achieved with Kiamichi

(Sidestep) last year. Cummings prepared

Kiamichi to beat Microphone (Exceed And

Excel) and Lyre (Lonhro) in the 2019 Golden

Slipper in a trifecta for Godolphin-owned two-

year-olds. "She (Thermosphere) turned up the

heat in the Group 3 Magic Night on the weekend

and proved she could handle the pressure,"

Cummings said on Godolphin's website. "The

team are excited to see if she has what it takes

to improve enough in the Golden Slipper, the

hardest two-year-old race on the calendar."

Godolphin will also be represented in the

$3.5million contest by Anthony Freedman-

trained Hanseatic (Street Boss).

Cellsabeel secures Slipper startFormer favourite Cellsabeel (Hinchinbrook)

has gained a run in the Golden Slipper after

Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Barbaric

(I am Invincible) was ruled out. Co-trainer Paul

Snowden said yesterday the colt would not run

at Rosehill due to the likely to heavy track. The

Snowden stable will still have Dame Giselle (I

Am Invincible) and King's Legacy (Redoute’s

Choice) in the Slipper. The Ciaron Maher and

David Eustace-trained Cellsabeel finished a

close third in the Black Opal behind Barbaric

and his stablemate Bartley (Written Tycoon),

leaving her one spot outside the top 16 for

the Slipper. Maher and Eustace are likely to

have four runners with Saturday’s Pago Pago

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Prague (Redoute’s

Choice), Muntaseera (I Am Invincible) and

Away Game (Snitzel) set to join Cellsabeel.

Rosehill Guineas next goal for Shadow HeroMark Newnham is planning to run dual Group

1-winning three-year-old Shadow Hero (Pierro)

in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) despite

also nominating him for the weight-for-age

Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on the same card.

The gelding was the $3.50 favourite yesterday

for Saturday's Rosehill Guineas, which is one

of five Group 1 races on the Golden Slipper

program. "He'll run in the Guineas," Newnham

said. "I put him in the Ranvet just in case the

Guineas ended up 16 runners and he came

up with barrier 16 or something and the other

ended up with five or six runners, but I'm 99 per

cent sure I'll be running him in the Guineas."

Gytrash among William Reid nomsGordon Richards’ Black Caviar Lightning

Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Gytrash (Lope

De Vega) is among a host of Group 1 winners

nominated for Friday’s William Reid Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. Gytrash won

the Lightning Stakes at Flemington last month

before finishing third to Bivouac (Exceed And

Excel) and Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) in the

Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at the same

track. Richards believes the early pace and the

way Gytrash handles the track will be crucial to

his chances. "They didn't go hard early in the

Newmarket and I thought it was a bit like a sit

and sprint," Richards said. "He went OK and

beat a lot of them home but I just thought you

didn't get to see his best. I think he needs a bit

of pace on up front. I'm not sure whether The

Valley will be the right place for him but that's

where the race is so we'll have to go there.”

McEvoy joins RosemontRosemont Stud yesterday announced the

appointment of Widden Stud’s former

nominations and marketing manager Ryan

McEvoy as bloodstock general manager.

McEvoy will join Rosemont having spent 15

years at Widden where he has overseen the

launch of leading stallions such as Sebring

(More Than Ready), Northern Meteor (Encosta

De Lago), Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and more

recently driven the marketing and nominations

behind the likes of Group 1 stars Trapeze Artist

(Snitzel) and Written By (Written Tycoon).

“Widden has largely been my life for the last 15

years and I consider myself incredibly fortunate

to have had the opportunity to work in such an

organisation,” McEvoy, who will assume his

Moody grantedtrainer’s licenceFormer champion trainer Peter Moody is set to

return to Victoria's training ranks after having

his licence application approved by Racing

Victoria on Friday. Moody, who has not trained

for the past four years after surrendering his

licence following a drawn-out cobalt case

which saw him suspended for six months, is

able to return to training as soon as the relevant

paperwork is submitted. Earlier in the year it

was reported that Moody had plans to take up

to 40 boxes at Pakenham.

Classique Legend to rejoin BridgeClassique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) is set

to return to the care of Les Bridge after plans to

ship the promising sprinter to Hong Kong were

shelved. The four-year-old was one of 15 horses

aboard a plane destined for Hong Kong which

failed to leave Australia over the weekend. It was

the third time Classique Legend’s departure

has been delayed since entering quarantine

and this latest setback has prompted owner

Boniface Ho to abandon his plans to move the

sprinter to Hong Kong.

Eagle Farm to host midweek meetsThe Brisbane Racing Club has received

permission to swap two midweek meetings

from Doomben to Eagle Farm in return for two

Saturdays in the coming weeks to ensure the

best racing surfaces for the winter carnival. Two

midweek meetings will be transferred from

Doomben to Eagle Farm (March 25 and April

13) while two Saturday meetings will go from

Eagle Farm to Doomben (March 28 and April

11). Eagle Farm will race this Saturday where

the rail will be out nine metres. “The scuffing

(at the March 7 meeting) was a result of the

leaf tissue being weakened by weather-related

disease – the profile and root health of the track

remains in great shape,” Racing Queensland

track specialist Mick Goodie said.

Griffiths fears for viability if racing shuts downAustralian Trainers’ Association (ATA)

president Robbie Griffiths yesterday called on

racing to be "vigilant and do our bit" to keep the

fast-spreading coronavirus out of the industry.

Griffiths also applauded the decision to race

behind closed doors and added that a lockdown

in the industry "could cripple a lot of people".

Griffiths told Racing.com: “Any industry, if there

is an outbreak, then it’ll be a 14-day lockdown

which could cripple a lot of people. It’s not an

easy task that everyone is trying to achieve.

If we are all vigilant and do our bit, if we can

prevent the virus from entering our industry,

then we’ve kicked a massive goal if we can do

that. If we can keep racing it’s a massive plus for

us. If everyone follows good hygiene policy and

do whatever the government and governing

bodies are going to do … then hopefully we will

dodge a big bullet.”

Provincial qualifier moved to NewcastleThe postponed Gosford Polytrack Provincial

Qualifier scheduled for last Saturday will now

be run at Newcastle on Thursday. Original

scratchings will be reinstated, with the field

limit 14 plus four emergencies. Horses will

remain in the same barrier as allocated at

Gosford, but a new saddle cloth order will be

allocated this morning when acceptances are

taken.

Racing continues with restrictionsHorse racing will continue around the country

with strict conditions on attendance and

participation. Saturday's Golden Slipper

meeting at Rosehill, which would normally

attract a crowd of more than 20,000, will be

restricted to 500 necessary personnel as per

government guidelines on mass gatherings

in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Trainers, handlers, vets and farriers will be

allowed on course along with stewards and a

limited media presence. The same restrictions

are in place in Victoria and Queensland and

also apply to trackwork and barrier trials.

RV announces new measuresRacing Victoria, which introduced restrictions

for last Saturday's Caulfield meeting, has now

imposed conditions on jockeys riding interstate

including that they not fly on commercial

airlines. Jockeys who ride interstate will need

to travel to and from those meetings by private

vehicle or charter flight to be able to compete

when they return to Victoria. A number of

Victorian riders are scheduled to ride at the

Golden Slipper meeting in Sydney. "Only

essential Racing NSW and Australian Turf Club

staff, some licensed racing participants, and

a restricted number of broadcast and media

representatives will be permitted to attend,"

the ATC said. "Owners and Australian Turf

Club members, along with general admission

customers, will not be allowed entry."

Albury Cup carnival to go aheadThis week’s two-day Albury Gold Cup carnival

will go ahead on the NSW-Victoria border

without crowds. Racing NSW yesterday

announced that the well-known carnival, which

features the $200,000 Albury Gold Cup (Listed,

2000m), will take place on Thursday and Friday

with just participants being allowed on course.

However, the non-TAB picnic race meeting

at Ardlethan in the Southern District region,

scheduled for Saturday, has been abandoned.

Owners banned from Cranbourne Training ComplexOwners have been banned from attending

the Cranbourne Training Complex in a bid

to stop an outbreak of the coronavirus at the

vital training facility in Melbourne’s south east.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil

Bainbridge confirmed the directive included

jump outs staged at the club, with a session

conducted yesterday. “In an effort to protect

the health and wellbeing of our participants, we

would like to advise that owners and other non-

Racing Victoria licensed individuals should

not attend the Cranbourne Training Complex,

effective immediately, without the approval

of club management,” the statement read.

“I strongly encourage trainers to notify their

owners that until further notice they should

not attend the Cranbourne Training Complex,

including any on course stables at the site.”

The Melbourne Racing Club has also enacted

similar measures.

Picnic meetings abandonedWhile professional racing is continuing in

Victoria and NSW with significant measures

in place including public lock-outs, Racing

Victoria has announced the final five meetings

of the picnic race season in the state have been

abandoned. They were scheduled to be held

at Alexandra (March 21), Healesville (March

28), Mansfield (April 4), Balnarring (April 11)

and Swifts Creek (April 12). Racing NSW also

announced yesterday that picnic meetings

at Ardlethan (March 21), Tullibigeal (March

28) and Cootamundra (April 4) and the non-

TAB Trangie meeting (March 21) had been

abandoned.

Apprentice race called offThe impacts of coronavirus have also seen the

National Apprentice Race Series heat at Doomben

abandoned. It was felt it would be unfair for

apprentices to travel from around Australia to

Queensland and risk exposure to the virus. The

$45,000 Benchmark 68 will remain on tomorrow's

program as scheduled and will now be conducted

under standard conditions. A Racing Queensland

spokesperson said a decision on all future legs of

the 2020 Series was expected to be determined

later this week by the participating racing

authorities. Queensland leads the series after a

win by Adin Thompson in Perth and a third by

Dakota Graham in Hobart in the first two heats.

There are two other heats besides Doomben, at

Sandown and Murray Bridge, in abeyance. The

series involves apprentices from all states except

NSW as well as New Zealand and Singapore.

Andrew Adkins injured in barrier trial incidentJockey Andrew Adkins suffered a wrist fracture in

an incident in a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday

when his mount broke through the starting

stalls. Adkins was taken to hospital where he

was found to have suffered an undisplaced wrist

fracture. He was due to be released from hospital

yesterday and is scheduled to see Racing NSW’s

Dr Duckworth for a check-up today.

Vale George DalyGeorge Daly, a leading Ascot trainer for more

than three decades, died on Saturday night.

Among the notable horses he trained were

Jacks Or Better (Curravilla), whose haul of 19

wins included victories in the Railway Stakes

(Gr 1, 1600m) and Winterbottom Stakes (Gr

2, 1200m) in 1995, and Surtee (Memento), a

multiple stakes winner a couple of years earlier.

Having undergone hip surgery in 2012, George

stepped back from training but enjoyed further

big-race success with his brother Wally, when

their gelding Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) won

the Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1. 1200m) and

Memsie Stakes (1400m) in 2017 in the care of

Lindsay Park Racing.

Hasahalo sets online recordNew Zealand One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) winner Hasahalo (Savabeel) has broken

the record for a horse sold online as she was

purchased by China Horse Club for NZ$670,000

from the Gavelhouse website yesterday. She

was catalogued as Lot 1. Gavelhouse also

held the previous online sale record when

Consensus (Postponed), who was sold in foal

to Iffraaj (Zafonic), made NZ$622,500 to Yulong

Investments. The sale occurred at Gavelhouse’s

December auction.

Derby winner heading to SydneyNew Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner

Sherwood Forest (Fastnet Rock) and third-

placed Scorpz (Charm Spirit) were among a

shipment of horses set to travel to Sydney from

Auckland last night which was postponed for

24 hours. The two are set to contest Saturday’s

Rosehill Guineas as a lead-up to the Australian

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) two weeks later. "It is going

Tuesday night at this stage," Sherwood Forest's

trainer Tony Pike said. "The hold-up was just

over the professional grooms getting clearance

to be classified as crew, so they can come in

and out of Australia and New Zealand. They

have had verbal clearance, but the airlines want

written clearance.”

Tyler duo could also head to AustraliaRiverton trainers Kelvin and Aimee Tyler remain

hopeful that two of their runners will still be

able to take up Australian targets after solid

performances at Trentham on Saturday. Dual

stakes winner Lightning Jack (Per Incanto) placed

in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m), while

Feel The Rush (Proisir) finished third in the New

Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). “The long-term plan

at the moment is to take them to South Australia

for the Oaks and Derby, but with everything

happening around the world at the moment I

guess things are up in the air,” Kelvin Tyler said.

“We will just have to see how things pan out or

whether we just send the horses. When you have

got horses at home you can’t be sitting in isolation

for a couple of weeks. It is certainly going to make

things difficult moving forward.”

Group test awaits Lord BouzeronManawatu trainer Chrissy Bambry will step

Lord Bouzeron (Burgundy) up in class for a

tilt at the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) at

Awapuni on Saturday week following his win

at Woodville on Sunday. “He keeps raising the

bar,” she said. “The more we throw at him, the

more he steps up. He is bred to get over a trip

and I think the Derby distances and further

won’t be a problem for him.”

Australian trip off for Mozu Ascot The Japanese challenge for the Doncaster Mile

(Gr 1, 1600m) was abandoned yesterday after

connections of Mozu Ascot (Frankel) and My

had already entered quarantine in Tokyo but

a change in conditions surrounding travel and

coronavirus mean they will now no longer be

aimed at Randwick.

INTERNATIONAL

British racing to gobehind closed doors

All race meetings in Britain from today until

the end of March will take place behind closed

doors, the British Horseracing Authority has

announced. A statement by the racing industry

steering group said the intention was for

scheduled race meetings to take place wherever

possible, warning that some may have to be

cancelled. It said every effort will be made to

notify customers and the betting industry at

the earliest opportunity. With race meetings

due to happen every day — and in the light of

possible staff absences, including in critical

roles, and in order to protect industry staff and

support the wider effort to free up critical public

services — the steering group said the aim

was to agree a schedule that was sustainable.

The plan was agreed yesterday by the sport’s

tripartite leadership, including the Racecourse

Association, The Horsemen’s Group and the

BHA.

BHA hit by suspected coronavirus casesThe BHA was yesterday forced to shut down its

head office in London after a small number of

suspected cases of coronavirus among staff.

The building, which also houses Great British

Racing (GBR), the Jockey Club and Racecourse

Owners Association (ROA), has been closed

until further notice and will now undergo a

deep clean. A BHA spokesperson said: "The

office at 75 High Holborn will be closed to all

staff and visitors from Monday, March 16 until

further notice. This is due to a small number

of office-based BHA employees self-isolating

with mild symptoms that could potentially be

consistent with coronavirus, but which are

not confirmed. All office-based staff are being

asked to work remotely as a precaution."

Racing suspended in FranceFrance yesterday became the first major racing

nation to suspend the sport after a meeting between

France Galop and Le Trot. All meetings have been

cancelled from today until April 15, a period that

covers a key section of Classic trials on the Flat. The

two governing bodies convened a special session

of their two administrative councils on Monday,

just 72 hours after moving all racing behind closed

doors. The suspension comes against a background

of emergency meetings between the government

of President Emmanuel Macron with health and

defence chiefs, with further measures to limit the

movement of people under discussion.

BY TIM ROWE | @ANZ_NEWS

Inglis last night reaffirmed its plan

to conduct next month’s Australian

Easter Yearling Sale as scheduled on an

invitation-only basis in the face of heavy

restrictions imposed by authorities that could

dent the depth of the buying bench due to the

growing coronavirus outbreak.

“The safety of our clients and staff is

paramount and as such we will strictly abide

by all state and federally-enforced guidelines in

regards to Covid-19,” Inglis managing director

Mark Webster said in a statement.

“At this stage, based on government

guidelines, the Easter Yearling Sale will be

restricted to 500 people on site at any one time

and will be an invitation-only event.

“To remain under 500 persons in

attendance each day, restrictions will obviously

be required

“We will continue to work with government

officials, health experts and our clients to

determine the most practical way to conduct

the sale and achieve optimum results for our

vendors and buyers.”

The Easter sale catalogue of 514 yearlings,

collectively the best-bred and credentialled

group of horses to be offered to market in

Australasia this year, are set to go under the

hammer at Inglis’ Sydney complex at Riverside

Stables of April 7 and 8.

Online bidding will be key in ensuring a

competitive buying bench was assembled for

the Easter sale, Webster said.

“Technology will play a critical role in

maintaining our global marketplace for this

sale, and will assist international buyers to

participate from afar,” he said.

“Our online bidding services have now

been in use for ten years and are very robust

and easy to use and I have no doubt they will

be of great benefit to everyone involved in this

sale.

“On-farm yearling inspections in the

Hunter Valley and around Australia are

taking place as normal and we encourage all

prospective buyers and agents to see as many

of the yearlings as possible prior to the official

start of Riverside inspections on Wednesday,

April 1.

“This will not only assist in buyers’

preparations but also help ease any strain on

capacities at Riverside in the lead-up to the sale.

“This is an ever-evolving situation and we

will provide further updates in coming days.”

There has been pressure from some quarters

to push back the date of the sale, but Webster in

yesterday’s ANZ Bloodstock News said he did

not believe it was “a realistic option to delay the

sale and hold it in the middle of winter when

perhaps the pandemic may worsen”.

Prominent breeder Matthew Sandblom,

a shareholder in Newgate Farm and the

proprietor of Kingstar Farm, weighed in on the

Easter sale debate yesterday.

He called for on-farm inspections to be

held in the lead up to the Easter sale before

online bidding is used on the scheduled dates

to auction the 514-lot catalogue of yearlings.

To enable the on-farm inspections,

interstate vendors would transport their

drafts to Hunter Valley so buyers can view the

yearlings, he said.

“About six to seven days out from the

sale date all farms open for inspection. In the

morning they would have, at pre-set times,

parades of their full drafts,” Sandblom wrote.

“In the afternoons people could have

selected parades of the horses they are most

interested in.

“Farms would also add as much info as

possible about each yearling online including

photos, videos, selling points, x-rays (and)

scopes.”

If such measures were not implemented,

Sandblom warned: “This crisis is going to go on

for months, so if something like the above is not

done there will be no sale at all this year.”

BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU

Sheng Li Superstar (Harbour Watch)

lived right up to his name with a

brave front running effort to win his

first Group race in Macau in taking

out Sunday’s Spring Trophy (Listed, 1500m).

Sheng Li Superstar was fired out of the gates

by Luis Corrales who quickly showed his rival

jockeys he was intent on leading; with Lover

Paradise (Canford Cliffs) surrendering the front

Corrales was then able to steady the speed in

the back and take control of the race.

Race favorite Pearl Green (Fastnet Rock)

was always handy in second spot under Fausto

Henrique and came to win the race soon after

straightening, however Sheng Li Superstar

showed great tenacity to fight back after being

headed to prevail on the line by a head from

Pearl Green, with Bring Me Speed (Sebring)

three quarters of a length away in third.

Prepared nowadays by Stanley Chin,

Sheng Li Superstar made it win number seven

in Macau with five minor placings from his 15

runs, and lifted his prize money to over HK$2

million.

A son of the unbeaten Harbour Watch

(Acclamation), Sheng Li Superstar was formerly

trained in Victoria by Henry Dwyer where he

won a Geelong Maiden on the all weather track

by six lengths from four runs in Australia.

The now five-year-old has been a real

bargain for his owner Mr. Frank Wong with four

brilliant wins on the sand, and now three on the

turf in distances from 1050 metres to Sunday’s

1500-metre event.

The win gave Panamanian born Luis

Corrales a treble for the afternoon in taking out

the first three races.

Corrales won the first of the day the Class

5 & 6 over 1500 metres on Peter Leyshan’s

promising three year old King Of Champions

(Foxwedge), who donkey licked his opponents

to win by three and three-quarter lengths.

Rivalry (Pierro) from the Victor Chan stable

was the second winner for Corrales, when he

did a good job from barrier nine to worry pace-

maker Thar (Exceed And Excel) out of victory in

the Class 2 & 3 over 1200 metres.

After Sunday’s treble, Corrales, a former

four time Champion jockey in Macau, is in

equal first spot with Roger Yu on 23 wins.

Brazilian Fausto Henrique is in third spot on

20, with Frenchman J B Hamel in fourth on 19

victories.

No jockey has been riding better in recent

weeks then Frenchman J B Hamel who booted

home another winning double on Sunday’s

racecard.

Hamel pulled off a surprise win on the

$181.00 longshot Gorgeous Bomb (All Too

Hard) who scored an easy victory in the Class 2

& 3 over 1200 metres.

Prepared by Danny Wong, Gorgeous Bomb

beat Electroplate Alloy (Golden Archer); with

Draft Camp (Dream Ahead), who was shooting

for four straight victories, close up in third.

Gorgeous Bomb is a former New Zealand

galloper that raced there as Copper Mine when

trained at Cambridge by Catherine Cameron.

Copper Mine won two of his ten runs in New

Zealand at Ruakaka and Te Rapa, both at

1200 metres, and placed second on two more

occasions.

Sundays win and his run time suggest the

son of All Too Hard (Casino Prince) will more

than pay his way in Macau.

Association One (Red Jazz) from the Stanley

Chin yard gave Hamel his second win for the

day when he produced a perfect ride to win the

Class 3 & 4 over 1800 metres.

Irish bred Association One was having his

seventh run in Macau but was for Sunday's race

stepping up to a suitable distance for the first time.

The gelding had raced in the UK under the name

of New Orleans where he had 13 runs for a win at

Wolverhampton and placed on five other occasions.

Hamel enjoyed his biggest day in Macau

with a four timer on February 22 and followed

that up with another four winners over the 6th

and 7th weekend race meetings.

Mission Dragon (Reliable Man) was

another good winner on Sunday when he raced

away for a big win in the Class 5 & 6 over 1200

metres under Fausto Henrique.

Trained by Patrick Lee, Mission Dragon

ended up in the box seat in transit before

powering away from his rivals over the last two

hundred to win handsomely.

Mission Dragon was a NZ$60,000 purchase

at the 2018 Karaka Ready To Run Sale and

judging by his easy victory Sunday, will

certainly pay his way in Macau.
