VAUTOUR LIGHTS UPCHELTENHAM IN OPENER

Festival winners rarely come as impressive as the WillieMullins-trained Vautour in yesterday’s opener, the Gr.1Golden Miller Novices’ Chase, where he ran his rivals raggedfrom the front, jumped impeccably and scored by fifteenlengths with his ears pricked, in the colours of Rich Ricci. The six-year-old son of Rathbarry’s Robin Des Champsmade the running, accompanied by Irish Saint (Saint DesSaints). The Noel Meade-trained Apache Stronghold(Milan) made ground from the back to mount a challengearound the home turn, but Vautour quickly put daylightbetween them and skipped to an easy victory from Meade’scharge and Valseur Liso (Anzillero), who were separatedby a short head, and Irish Saint who stayed on for fourth.

Second on his two starts in France, before joiningMullins, Vautour has only tasted defeat once, atLeopardstown on Boxing Day and this was his fourth winat the highest level, having scored in the Deloitte NoviceHurdle, Supreme Novice Hurdle here twelve months ago,and the Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle.

Mullins said: “I’ve always loved this horse, from the timehe won here last year. I just couldn’t get him back [to thatform] and I’ve had to really work hard at him for the pastthree weeks to get him back into that shape today, butthat’s probably what he needs – just hard work. I’veprobably been minding him too much all season. I madesure he did plenty of work and I don’t like doing that, buthe needed it because he wasn’t coming into form and itwas a bit ‘do or die’, but he did come right.

“I was just hoping he would get over the last two[fences]. The race is over turning for home and it’s just aquestion of jumping, and he absolutely flew them. I don’tknow what was going through Ruby’s head after AnniePower the other day, but I think he just committed andsaid ‘here we go’, and was bang, bang over the last two. He’s definitely a Gold Cup horse.”

Bred in France by Haras de Saint Voir and PatrickJoubert, who were also responsible for Wednesday’s Gr.3Coral Cup winner Aux Ptits Soins (Saint Des Saints), heis out of the tough mare Gazelle De Mai (Dom Pasquini),who won nine races on the flat, six times over hurdles, including the Grande Course de Haies de Bordeaux, andfive times over fences, from 39 starts over six seasons, and has produced three other winners of twelve races. She is a full-sister to the Grand Steeplechase de Bordeauxwinner Lord Pasquini.

A dual bumper and hurdle winner as a four-year-old, hewas runner-up in the Gr.1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle thefollowing year, before winning the Gr.2 West YorkshireHurdle at Wetherby in November. This season he has beenplaced in the Gr.2 Long Distance Hurdle and Gr.2 CleeveHurdle on his last start.

An emotional Greatrex said: “I believed in the horse, butI was struggling with him early season. When he cameback in I was having trouble with him with his wind, and Isent him away to be tested, and he then went and won atWetherby and won well. So I thought the people who werelooking at his wind didn’t know what they were on about.

“After that I struggled with him and I thought we’d go tothe Cleeve and we’d see, and he wasn’t right. So we hadit [wind operation] done. I’d like to say a big thank you tomy head lad Graham Bains, who does everything with thishorse. We knew he was spot-on. But I’m small. I’ve got 75horses in the yard and we’re breaking through.”

Sheehan said of the race: “That is what dreams aremade of. He jumped off well but I had to get at him just toget my way, so I could get in front. He jumped brilliant anddid everything right. He was full of running and I didn’tknow whether to squeeze on earlier, as he had so muchrunning in him. He’s done everything right, but I was justwaiting for a horse to fly past me and beat me. He’s donenothing wrong today in my eyes. He pings off this sort ofground. When I pulled him up after the race, he still hadmore running in him. He doesn’t know he’s had a raceeven though this is a World Hurdle.”

Owned by Jill and Robin Eynon, he was bred byJosephine O’Callaghan and sold by Ballyhampshire Stud

at Tattersalls Ireland as a three-year-old to Grove Stud for€13,000. He is out of the unraced Nosie Betty(Alphabatim), who is a full-sister to the Gr.1 DeloitteNovice Hurdle winner Mr Noise. row tackling the last. Call The Cops prevailed to giveAndrew Tinkler his second Festival victory, with UniqueDe Cotte (Voix Du Nord) a length and three quarters awayin second and a further three quarters of a length to TheTourard Man (Shantou) in third.

Henderson said: “The way it was going, I thoughtsomething was going to come and nail us and it has donethe past couple of days, but the horse has done well. I’mdelighted for Matt [Morgan – who owns Call The Copsalong with his wife Lauren], as it’s not been easy for himthis season. We started off thinking Sign Of A Victory wasgoing to do the business for him and I thought he wasseriously good, but things got messy in the winter. I’mthrilled for them.“It’s also great for Andrew [Tinkler], who has been

fantastic. People think he’s part of the back room with us,but he’s not, he’s certainly in the front of the room atSeven Barrows and he deserves it. I thought Dawalancould be the one for this race on the ground [finished16th], but Andrew has done it well and he’s been a star foryears. We’ve had seconds and thirds this year and they’verun well, but it’s nice to finally get that winner.”

The winner of a bumper and maiden hurdle as a four-year-old, he landed a novice hurdle at Ludlow last April

and was fourth to Brother Brian in a qualifier at KemptonPark in November. He opened his account this year with awin at Doncaster twelve days ago and that penaltyenables him to get into yesterday’s race.

Bred in Ireland by Martin Donnellan, he was sold atTattersalls Ireland as a store for €24,000 and later thatyear at the DBS Newbury Sale to Stephen Hillen for£50,000. He is a full-brother to Beggars Cross, who wona bumper on debut at Huntingdon on Wednesday and theyare out of the dual winner Ballygill Heights (SymboliHeights), who is out of an unraced half-sister to the ListedGalway Extended Handicap Hurdle winner No Tag (Torus).

Make A Track(Hernando) and Champion Court (Court Cave) took thefield along and Bass pushed Darna to lead at the secondlast. Going clear, he saw off the challenge of Monetaire(Anabaa) up the hill to win by a length and a quarter, withRawnaq (Azamour) getting the better of Buywise(Tikkanen) for third.

Bailey said: “It’s great. The Martins have had horses withme for a long time and we paid a lot of money for thishorse – for us anyway, we paid £120,000 for him. We’vehad lots of problems with him; he’s had leg trouble and threewind operations. COLLINS HAS A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER

James Collins rolled back the years when guiding Knight’sParade (Dark Angel) to a one and three quarter lengthvictory in the St Patrick’s Derby at Cheltenham thisafternoon. The race, which is run in aid of the InjuredJockeys Fund and supported by the Amateur JockeysAssociation, has become a favourite at The Festival and hasraised more than £1.2 million for charity since its inception.

Collins was Champion Conditional Jockey in Ireland in1989 and his class showed in the saddle, bringing theGordon Elliott-trained five-year-old through with a smoothrun to collar Hayley O’Connor and Hurricane Ridge(Hurricane Run), as the pair battled up the hill.

“That was great,” said Collins. “He’s a great horse. Ineed to thank Gordon Elliott and the Bodhran Syndicatefor letting me ride him. It was easy! There was no betterman to get him ready. It’s fantastic and even sweeter, as Iwas riding for my old boss Dessie Hughes and also PatsyByrne, two great people at Cheltenham for years. We’vebeen coming here for years as punters – it’s brilliant. Whata day! I’d like to thank the Injured Jockeys Fund. It’s greatto raise money for such a good cause. I’d also like to thankTony Martin and Eric McNamara who let me ride out to getfit. It was a fabulous day.”

O’Connor, who works as a member of Ladbrokes’ PRteam, was over the moon with the performance of HurricaneRidge. “That was brilliant – I had so much fun!” sheenthused.

Twenty-one horses, of which the majority came from theIrish point-to-point field, were offered and 18 (86%) foundnew homes. Turnover of £1,362,000 was down 19%, whilethe average price also fell, dropping 28% to £75,667.However, a glance at the prices paid for the offered lots asfoals, yearlings or stores suggests some decent profitswere made, and vendors seemed happy.

One horse made £200,000-plus, compared to three lastyear, while five lots made a six-figure sum.

Brightwells was fortunate in year one to stage the eventon a relatively warm evening that drew a big crowd ofinterested spectators – last night it was decidedly chillier, and few of the Festival’s racegoers who stayed to watchproceedings saw out the trip.

From £100,000 upwards Kirk, who was standing withMullins and French agent Pierre Boulard, and Drew, surrounded by members of David Pipe’s team, includingjockey Tom Scudamore, pressed the price up. Kirk got inthe all-important £200,000 bid and, after deliberating,Drew increased his offer to £205,000 and his opponentdeclined any further interest.

Five-year-old Champers On Ice (a Points of View pickin yesterday’s EBN) scored at The Pigeons on Sunday, making amends for unseating on his first outing inFebruary. He was trained for owner Alan Harte by Kildare-based Fabian Burke, who trains at the Towerview Stablesyard of owner Edell Logan. Her husband, Joey, said: “Weknew he was a really good horse – from the day we brokehe showed lots of scope, and he won a schooling bumperat Fairyhouse which confirmed the promise. We boughthim privately from Harry Fowler and Peter Molony –tonight’s sale is brilliant for the yard.”

Drew looked suitably happy with his purchase, saying: “Hewas very impressive when he won and I like the sire, RobinDes Champs, and I particularly liked the dam’s performance[Miss Nova, a winner of six races and dam of four winners].He fits the bill and looks a nice sort. It was fantastic to win arace here yesterday, and I hope to do it again.”

GET OUT THE CHAMPERSSales-ring battles in the open air cannot match the tensionof a close encounter in an auditorium, but a tusslebetween two heavyweights for £205,000 top lotChampers On Ice (Lot 18) was intriguing nonetheless.

Swinging punches on behalf of Team Willie Mullins wasHarold Kirk, the trainer’s emissary at sales auctions, whilehis opponent was the cool and smartly-dressed figure ofracehorse owner Bryan Drew. Mullins may have saddledsix winners this week, but Drew had bragging rights inWednesday’s Weatherbys Champion Bumper when hisMoon Racer – a Brightwells purchase – landed the spoils.

Sutton Manor (Gold Well) (Lot 22),who joins Willie Mullins after selling to Harold Kirk (Ce).

BOWE HITS THE TARGETHarold Kirk was defeated in his attempt to buy top lotChampers On Ice, but he gained a very smart looker inSutton Manor (Lot 22), who was offered by Colin Bowe’sMilestone Stables. A winner at Lingstown on Sunday, thefour-year-old will join Willie Mullins’ stable with a £125,000valuation – his half-brother, Relic Rock, is a dual bumperwinner while the further family includes such stars asBadsworth Boy and Fundamentalist.

Kirk said: “He’s by a very good sire in Gold Well, whowas a brother to Montjeu, a stallion with whom I’ve hadplenty of luck. This fellow looked smart and camerecommended by Colin. Hopefully we will bring him backhere next year for the bumper.”

Bowe had earlier sold another six-figure lot whensecuring £110,000 for Crazyheart (Lot 7), a winner atTallow on Sunday. The four-year-old son of Alhaarth costowner Sean O’Neill and agent Tom Malone just €7,000 atGoresbridge in May 2013.

James Nolan, assistant trainer to his brother Paul, signed for the gelding, then said: “He’s a lovely horse, butwe’ve bought some nice ones off Colin. When he won onSunday he was ridden by Barry O’Neill, who is a goodfriend of mine and told me he felt the horse was the realdeal. He’ll probably end up as a partnership horse.”

A smiling Bowe said of Crazyheart: “He was bought as acolt, so we cut him, gave him some time off, and we’vebeen well-rewarded. He won nicely on Sunday – I’mdelighted with the price.”

BROMLEY GAINS MOST-ACTIVE AWARDThe most active agent during the sale was HighflyerBloodstock’s Anthony Bromley, who secured five lots, headed by Minella Awards (Lot 10), who made £120,000.

Given the gelding’s name, it was no surprise to see JohnNallen as trainer and consignor – he bought the son ofOscar as a foal for €11,000 from Jimmy Mangan, andsaddled him to finish second at Tallow last month.

Bromley said: “He’ll be going to Nicky Henderson. Oscaris one of my favourite sires and this horse was beaten bythe narrowest margin on his only start. The horse who was20 lengths back in third, Polymath, came out and won atthe weekend.”

The next horse into the ring, Jessber’s Dream (Milan),fell to Bromley’s bid of £55,000, leaving Denis Murphy’s

yard bound for Harry Fry, while Semper Invicta (Lot 14)also dropped into the Highflyer agent’s clutches. Anothermember of Colin Bowe’s Milestone Stables draft, the four-year-son of Shantou made £90,000 and will soon beplying his trade with Champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

Jamie Codd, fresh from winning the Walwyn/Muir Chaseon The Package, led up Oldgrangewood (Lot 17), whomhe rode to victory at Lingstown on Sunday (another Pointsof View selection). Bought for €15,000 at Goffs LandRover Sale last year by Codd, the son of Central Parkwas another to leave Denis Murphy’s stable afterBromley’s £70,000 bid secured the prize.

Codd said: “I bought him last year because he had agood step, a nice front leg and was athletic. I’m veryhappy with the price we got – it’s profit, and that’s alwaysgood.”

Dan Skelton will train Oldgrangewood, revealedBromley, while the young Warwickshire trainer also takesRobin Of Locksley (Lot 5). Skelton’s £72,000 bid resultedin a nice profit for Martin and Deirdre Hassett, who boughtthe son of Robin Des Pres for €9,000 at Goffs LandRover Sale in 2013.

A point win at Nenagh and a place in a Navan bumperwas enough to impress Skelton, who headed agent JerryHogan for Robin Of Locksley. “He had a tough enoughrace at Navan, so we’ll give him some time off,” saidSkelton. “He’ll race for Joe Tierney and Simon Kauntz –Simon is a new owner to my yard.”

HENRY SCORES FOR LACEYTom Lacey is well known as a vendor of British pointers, but, having taken out a licence this season, he was able tooffer a bumper horse last night.

CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL

OLD FAVOURITES RETURNTO CHASE GOLD CUP GLORY

A large field of 17 are due to contest this afternoon’s£550,000 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the final Gr.1 of thisyear’s Festival.

Among the runners are the 2014 first, third and fourth –Lord Windermere (Oscar), The Giant Bolster (BlackSam Bellamy) and Silviniaco Conti (Dom Alco), as wellas the 2013 winner Bobs Worth (Bob Back) and dualFestival winner Holywell (Gold Well). Of these, SilviniacoConti is the clear form choice from this season, the PaulNicholls-trained nine-year-old having won the Gr.1Lancashire Chase and finished second in the Gr.1 KingGeorge VI Chase this winter. Lord Windermere hasfinished third twice in Gr.1 company this season behindDon Cossack (Sholokhov; also declared but third inyesterday’s Gr.1 Ryanair Chase) and Boston Bob (BobBack; also reopposes) in December and behind fellowGold Cup participant Carlingford Lough (King’sTheatre) just over a month ago. Bobs Worth has only hadfour starts since his victory two years ago, and the onlyone since his fifth last year was when he was last of thefinishers in December’s Gr.1 Lexus Chase atLeopardstown. Six of the seven in front of him run here,

including the first three, namely Road To Riches (Gamut),On His Own (Presenting) and the four-time Cheltenhamwinner Sam Winner (Okawango). Holywell, a Listedhurdles winner here two years ago and a Gr.3 winner lastyear, went on to win a Gr.1 at Aintree in April and, after twodefeats this season, warmed up with a bloodless victory ina small race at Kelso last month.

After finishing fourth behind Holywell at Aintree, ManyClouds (Cloudings) has won three from three, includinghaving Holywell back in third early last November,Houblon Des Obeaux (Panoramic) and last year’s Gr.1RSA Chase runner-up Smad Place (Smadoun) in arrearsin the Gr.3 Hennessy Gold Cup four weeks later, and TheGiant Bolster a well-beaten fourth here in January.

Besides the aforementioned Boston Bob and On HisOwn, Willie Mullins also runs Djakadam (Saint DesSaints), who has won three of his five starts over fences, including an easy victory under topweight in January’sThyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park.

Even more of an unknown quantity over fences is thehighly-regarded novice Coneygree (Karinga Bay). TheMark Bradstock-trained eight-year-old was a dual Gr.2winner on this course over hurdles in the 2012-2013season, but was off the track for the best part of two yearsuntil making all to win a Gr.2 over fences at Newbury inNovember. He followed up with a 40-length win atKempton Park on Boxing Day and again made all to winthe Gr.2 Denman Chase at Newbury in early February fromHoublon Des Obeaux. This chap has had his own way insmall fields this season and the Gold Cup is a notoriouslyhard race for a novice, so it will be a terrific achievementif he can beat these seasoned rivals in the top race of themeeting.

HENDERSON STRONG-HANDEDIN SEARCH OF TRIUMPH

The final day’s action starts with the Gr.1 Triumph Hurdleand 17 four-year-olds, almost all of them bred for the Flat, are due to line up for the two miles and one furlongcontest. Nicky Henderson has saddled the winner a recordfive times and has three of the top five in the market, allFrench imports. His Peace And Co (Falco) has won allthree starts – at Clairefontaine last summer, a DoncasterGr.2 in December by 19 lengths from Starchitect, andJanuary’s Gr.2 trial here, in which he beat Karezak(Azamour) by three lengths. Hargam (Sinndar), aLongchamp Flat winner, finished second on his hurdlingdebut here at Cheltenham (idled when in front after thelast and was pipped at the post), before beating Karezakand Stars Over The Sea (Sea The Stars; reopposeshere) over this course and distance four weeks later, andthen beat Starchitect by six lengths at Musselburgh on 1stFebruary. Henderson’s other runner Top Notch(Poliglote), bred for the jumping game, is unbeaten in fiveruns over the smaller obstacles, two in France and three inBritain, though none at Stakes level.

Willie Mullins also has three in a race he won back in2002 with Scolardy. The last filly to win was Snow Dropin 2000 and the only one in today’s lineup is his PetiteParisienne (Montmartre), a Flat winner in the FrenchProvinces last May who defeated her stablemate and thefavourite Kalkir (also by Montmartre) in last month’s Gr.1Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown. The pair are

joined by Dicosimo (Laveron), an Auteuil winner inOctober who made a successful Irish debut at GowranPark in January.

Beltor (Authorized) has won both his starts overhurdles, including last month’s Gr.2 Adonis Hurdle atKempton Park, Devilment (Cape Cross) is two from threeover jumps, though in more modest contests, Baraka DeThaix (Dom Alco) disappointed last time after finishingthird in a Gr.2 here in November, and Pain Au Chocolat(Enrique) has won both his races since coming over fromFrance, including a defeat of fellow Triumph runner OldGuard (Notnowcato) at Sandown Park on 31st January.

COMPETITIVE FIELDFOR STAYING NOVICES

The staying novices get their turn in the Gr.1 Spa Novices’Hurdle over three miles and Willie Mullins has a quarter ofthe 20-strong field. His Black Hercules (Heron Island)won a Gr.3 over this trip at Cork, last month’s Thurlesrunner-up Milsean (Milan) was a three-mile point-to-pointwinner two years ago, Measureofmydreams (Shantou)beat Milsean over two miles and six furlongs in January,Arbre De Vie (Antarctique) has won his last two overshorter trips and Avant Tout (Agent Bleu) was fourth lasttime after winning a small race at Tramore.

The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Blaklion (Kayf Tara)is the only course and distance winner in the field, havingeasily won a Gr.2 here in December, and he has twicefinished close behind Wednesday’s Gr.1 runner-upParlour Games this season. Last time, he was caught onthe line by Caracci Apache (High Chaparral) in a three-mile Doncaster Gr.2 and that gelding looks the best of theNicky Henderson pair in this race, though his stablemateOut Sam (Multiplex) is unbeaten in two runs at a lowerlevel and is clearly improving.

The Nick Williams-trained Tea For Two (Kayf Tara) haswon two of his three starts since finishing behind Out Samin November, including a wide-margin victory in the ListedLanzarote Hurdle at Kempton Park, albeit off a low weight.Gordon Elliott’s No More Heroes (Presenting) was a Gr.2winner over two and a half miles at Navan two starts back,Definitly Red (Definite Article) and Fletchers Flyer(Winged Love) were first and second, separated by half alength, in a Gr.2 at Haydock Park over this trip, andMartello Tower (Milan) is a dual Gr.3 winner over threemiles this season.

Vautour became the sixth Gr.1 winner at the meeting forthe almost unstoppable Willie Mullins and did so inspectacular fashion. Just headed by Irish Saint (SaintDes Saints) over the first two fences, he then took up therunning and put in an exhibition round of jumping. Askedto quicken again after the last, he sprinted clear to win by15 lengths with his ears still pricked. Vautour ended last season – and his hurdling career –with a Gr.1 hat-trick in Leopardstown’s Deloitte NoviceHurdle, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at this meeting andPunchestown’s Champion Novice Hurdle. He started overfences with a defeat of Clarcam at Navan in November, but was then comprehensively beaten by the same horseat Leopardstown on Boxing Day when he made severalmistakes in the very testing conditions. He was well incommand last time at Leopardstown when the nearest ofonly two rivals fell, and Mullins commented afteryesterday’s race that he had worked the horse hard overthe last three weeks to get him to full fitness. Yesterday’svictory takes Vautour’s record to eight wins and threeseconds from eleven outings.

His sire Robin Des Champs ran five times over hurdlesat Auteuil, winning four of them, and has stood since 2009at Glenview Stud, where his fee is listed as private.
