a partnership between Antonio Caro and Gerard Augustin-Normand and will go into training with Jean-Claude Rouget. He is from a super maternal family and by a stallion who has already proved himself as a sire with Brametot this year.” This colt is the second foal out of the unraced Java Jazz (Singspiel), who is herself a half-sister to dual Listed winner and Gr.2-placed Puggy (Mark Of Esteem), the dam of Caro and Augustin-Normand’s Gr.1 Prix de Diane and Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Avenir Certain.

Vidal also purchased Lot 230, a filly by Le Havre from Coulonces Sales for €75,000. This filly is out of the triple winner Influence (Dansili), a daughter of the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner Moiava (Bering) and Vidal said: “She is a pretty filly who is well made, but looks more like she will be a three-year-old. I like Dansili a lot as a broodmare sire.”

Lot 297, a filly from the first crop of Charm Spirit presented by Coulonces Sales on behalf of Team Hogdala, was bought for €82,000 by SEP Ecurie Carlito and Co. Chantilly-based trainer and former jockey Yohann Gourraud, who did the bidding, said afterwards: “She is a lovely filly. I saw her this morning and I liked her a lot. She walks well and has a lot of strength. I had to go over my budget, but I was underbidder on another lot earlier and I didn’t want to get beaten again! She is for a partnership of owners.” This filly is the second foal out of her unraced dam Morning Bride (Danehill Dancer), a full-sister to the Gr.2 Railway Stakes winner Probably. Further down the page are Champions, such as Moonlight Cloud, Generous and Imagine.

Jean-Claude Rouget for Lot 321, a daughter of Evasive, who stood for a fee of €6,000 at Haras de Grandcamp at the time, from the family of Lope De Vega and presented by Haras des Capucines. This filly is out of the two-time winner Red Love (Gone West), who has produced two winners from four foals of racing age including the juvenile Red Line (Sageburg), who has won on three occasions and been placed at Listed level this year. “This is a family that I know well,” explained Pimbonnet. “She is bred to be precocious. Fabrice Petit loved her when he saw her and she was the one he really wanted to buy today.”

Sylvain Vidal went to €90,000 for Lot 235, a son of Rajsaman, who is based at his stud Haras de Monfort et Preaux. Presented by La Motteraye Consignment, this filly from the family of dual French Classic winner Avenir Certain was bred by Vidal himself. “He is for

Austin did the bidding on behalf of Farrington and she explained: “He will be trained by Martyn Meade, but the owner has yet to be decided. He is a lovely, big, scopey horse and we had to go a little over budget to get him. He comes from a very good consignor who always does a great job with their horses.” This colt is out of the twice-raced mare Santa Louisia (Highest Honor), who has produced three winners from four foals of racing age, including Listed-placed Duke Of Dundee (Duke Of Marmalade).

GALILEO FOALS HEADLINE NOVEMBER FOAL CATALOGUEA trio of Galileo foals headline this year’s Goffs November Foal Sale catalogue, which is now available online.

1,110 foals are catalogued for the five-day sale, which this year takes place in two parts. Part 1 of the sale will begin on Monday 20th November, with what were traditionally “Day 3” foals, building to a climax on Wednesday, 22nd November, when the top tier foals will be offered. Part 2 of the foal sale will take place on Saturday 25th and Sunday, 26th November, with the breeding stock sale taking place on Thursday 23rd and Friday, 24th November. The foals are catalogued together with a separate catalogue for breeding stock.

The Galileo foals will be offered by The Castlebridge Consignment and include a full-sister to the Gr.1 winner Johannes Vermeer, who finished a head second in the Gr.1 Ladbrokes Stakes at Caulfield last weekend, as well as Elizabeth Browning, who won the Gr.2 Kilboy Estates Stakes at the Curragh this year (Lot 541). Another headliner is a son of the Champion Sire out of the dual Gr.1-winning Australian race mare Melito (Lot 569), while the trio is completed by a filly out of another Southern Hemisphere multiple Group winner Fix (Lot 732).

The diverse sire profile also includes foals by Acclamation, Australia, Dansili, Dark Angel, Exceed And Excel, Fastnet Rock, Iffraaj, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Nathaniel, Oasis Dream, Pivotal, Sea The Stars, Siyouni, Society Rock, Teofilo and many more. Those most strongly

Much of her success has come on the Flat, but she also trained Izzo (Tertullian) to win a Gr.3 over jumps recently for owner Eckhard Sauren, for whom she also bought this colt. The second dam of this colt is Gr.3 winner Louve (Irish River), the dam of multiple Group winner and sire Loup Breton (Anabaa) and Gr.3 winner Lil’Wing (Galileo). Fey commented: “This colt had everything going for him, his character, the way he walks and his pedigree. We will see if he looks like being precocious once we start working with him at home.”

represented include Dandy Man (41), Camacho (33), Epaulette (31), Elzaam (30), No Nay Never (28), Zebedee (28) and War Command (27).

Among the first season sires featured are Free Eagle (25), Make Believe (23), Night Of Thunder (21), Gleneagles (9),Golden Horn (4) and Muhaarar (3), while significant numbers by Gutaifan (44), Anjaal (37), Hallowed Crown (33) and Ivawood (32) are also on offer.

The sale proved to be a leading source of pinhook profit once again at the 2017 yearling sales with examples including a foal bought last November for €56,000 that sold at the Orby for €500,000, a €46,000 foal that sold for €325,000, a €100,000 to €300,000 pinhook and a €68,000 November purchase that sold at the Orby for €320,000.

On the racecourse graduates were headed by multiple Gr.1 winner Ribchester, as well as a host of Group-winning two-year-olds, such as the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes winner Rajasinghe, Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner Barraquero and Fighting Irish, who won a Gr.2 in France last week, as well as the Gr.3 Autumn Stakes winner and Classic contender Ghaiyyath, who was Europe’s highest-price colt foal in 2015 when selling for €1.1 million.

Commenting on the launch of the catalogue, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said: “Goffs November Sale is a sale that goes from strength to strength each year, with the last three renewals providing the top-priced foals in Europe, and to be the only sale in the world to offer Galileo foals is a wonderful endorsement of the quality associated with the November Sale. We have received incredible support from Irish breeders once again, which has resulted in a catalogue of great strength and depth packed with potential at every level, be it for end users or those looking to buy to re-sell.

“Reacting to client feedback from both vendors and purchasers the format was revised to allow maximum inspection time for the premier foals and we believe those selling later in the week will also benefit from the knock on effect of being viewed during the sale.”

The November Breeding Stock Sale catalogue will be available online later today.

News in brief...TWIRL SUPPLEMENTED TO KEENELAND NOVEMBER SALETwirl, the Listed Hurry Harriet Stakes-winning full-sister to Misty For Me (Galileo), winner of the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and dam of this year’s multiple Gr.1 winners Roly Poly and U S Navy Flag, has been supplemented for the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, where she will be consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency as Lot 366A. The eight-year-old will be offered in foal to Curlin.

Hill ‘n’ Dale President John G Sikura said: “Twirl represents a unique opportunity to purchase a Stakes-winning, Graded-quality mare by the world’s leading sire Galileo, from arguably the most prolific current pedigree in the world.

“Twirl produced a beautiful filly by Tapit in 2017 and is in foal to leading sire Curlin. I don’t think there will be another mare presented to auction anywhere with this much quality and current relevance in Gr.1 racing. She is a jewel.”

FASTNET ROCK FILLY MAKES BLUE SAPPHIRE A FORMALITYThe Fastnet Rock filly Formality added the Gr.3 Blue Sapphire Stakes to her CV at Caulfield yesterday as the three-year-old proved too good for her rivals in the 1200m contest.

The winner of the Gr.2 Silver Shadow and Furious Stakes at the start of last month, she was well beaten in the Gr.1 Golden Rose on the 23rd September, but bounced back to win for the training partnership of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig. Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who blamed himself for her defeat in the Golden Rose, she travelled well in second before sprinting to the line and holding off the challenge of the Craig Williams-trained colt Jukebox (Snitzel) to win by a long neck, while Long Eagle (Zoffany) was a length and a quarter back in third.

She is owned by the Coolmore Syndicate, Paul Shanahan and MV Magnier and was a A$120,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft by Inglis, as agent. She has won five of her nine starts and earned nearly A$800,000 in prize money and her next target is the Gr.1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby day, where she will again take on the colts.

WE ARE SISTER WITH YOU MAKES ALL AT DEAUVILLEThe Gr.3 Prix des Reservoirs, the feature race at Deauville yesterday, which is restricted to two-year-old fillies who have not won a Gr.1, was won by the Freddy Head-trained With You. The daughter of Dansili dictated the tempo from the front and, having turned for home, showed an impressive turn of foot to go clear of the rest of the field and score by two and a half lengths from Altea (Siyouni). Prontamente (More Than Ready) was a further length back in third. This was just her second start, having won her maiden at Saint-Cloud last month by six lengths.

Owned and bred by George Strawbridge, she is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Prix de l’Opera winner We Are and a half-sister to the Listed Prix de La Cochere and Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr winner Dream Clover and the Listed Prix Saonois winner Incahoots

SMILING TIGER FILLY TOPS BARRETTS SALE FOR HULLThe Barretts Fall Yearling and All Ages Sale was headed on Tuesday by a daughter of California’s leading first-crop sire Smiling Tiger (Lot 94) from Stormy Hull and Ginger Samples’ Critter Creek Farm that was knocked down to Slugo Racing for €220,000. The yearling, already named Smiling Diamonds, is out of the Stakes-placed Slewdledo mare Carrie’s A Jewel, who is already the dam of the Champion Californian-bred Two-Year-Old Colt California Diamond (Harbor The Gold). She was bought by Steve Gasparrelli, who already has promising stock by the young sire and who bought last year’s $190,000 sale topper, which was a colt by Smiling Tiger out of Erica’s Smile from Woodbridge Farm.

Gasparrelli, who has about 20 horses in training with Mike Puype, was the leading buyer at the sale, purchasing two for a total of $305,000. His other purchase was Lot 147, a Californian-bred daughter of Slew’s Tiznow and a full-sister to the Gr.3 El Camino Real Derby winner Zakaroff, that was consigned by Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Thoroughbreds and cost $85,000.

Two other horses made six figures, headed by a daughter of the Gr.1 Pacific Classic Stakes hero Acclamation (Unusual Heat), Lot 159, from Harris Farms, agent for Stephen Ferraro. The yearling buy-back rate was 35 per cent, with 68 of the 196 through the ring not sold. Overall, 155 grossed $2,301,000 and averaged $14,845, compared to last year’s figures of 175 grossing $2,496,500 and averaging $14,266.

NEW RECRUITS JOIN PEDRO THE GREAT AT HARAS DE LA HAIE NEUVEHaras de la Haie Neuve has two new recruits in its stallion ranks for 2018 as it has announced the addition of the Listed Free Handicap winner and Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-placed Whiteclifsofdover, who will be the first son of War Front to stand in France, and Listed-placed hurdler Magneticjim (Galileo).

The Britany-based stud has been owned by Alain Regnier and he is handing over the reins to Tangui and Dorothee Saliou. They have also announced that first crop sire Pedro The Great (Henrythenavigator) will have his fee raised from €3,000 to €6,000 next year following a good start with his first runners. These include nine winners from just 35 foals and three black-type performers, including the Listed Criterium du Bequet winner Feralia, the Surfer Girl Stakes winner Fatale Bere and the dual Gr.3-placed Bonita Fransisca.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Whitecliffsofdover was bred in the US by Claiborne Farm and purchased for $1,150,000 by MV Magnier as a yearling from Keeneland. He won his maiden over seven furlongs on his second start in the August of his juvenile campaign and was placed in the Gr.3 Sommerville Tattersall Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on his only other two starts that year and he returned at three to win the Listed European Free Handicap. He is a half-brother to the Stakes winner and Gr.1 Beldame Stakes-third Endless Chatter (First Samurai), out of a winning full-sister to the dual Gr.2 winner, Gr.1 Florida Derby runner-up and sire Pulpit (A P Indy). The further family also includes the Gr.2 King’s Bishop Stakes winner and sire Tale Of The Cat and the European Champion Two-Year-Old and sire Johannesburg.

He will stand for a fee of €3,000.National Hunt prospect Magneticjim was trained by Pascal Bary

to win twice over a mile on the Flat at three and four and then went to Alain Couetil, for whom he won over hurdles and was also placed in the Listed Prix Jean Granel, a two mile two furlong hurdle contest at Auteuil. Bred in Ireland by Aliette Forien, he was sold by Reboursiere et de Montaigu for €500,000 as a yearling at Arqana to Societe d’Entrainement P Barry. went down by a head to Cloud Computing in the Gr.1 Preakness Stakes on his last start.

Casse explained: “Unfortunately we just ran out of time to get him to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. I could never get him completely over his foot abscess and it wasn’t possible to train him the way I needed in order to bring him back at the highest level, which is where he deserved to be. He’s an extremely talented horse that can do anything and he overcame a lot of adversity to achieve what he did. I still believe he was the most talented horse of his generation.”

Bred in Kentucky by Steven Nicholson and Brandi Nicholson, he was sold for $475,000 as a yearling at Keeneland to Oxley. He is a half-brother to the Listed winners Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy), out of the placed Sambuca Classica (Cat Thief). The second dam, In Her Glory (Miswaki), was also a Listed winner and she was placed in the Gr.1 Acorn Stakes and Gr.1 Gazelle Handicap.

“Classic Empire was an exceptionally talented two-year-old,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “He broke his maiden over four and a half furlongs in early May and ended his juvenile campaign winning a very strong running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, for which he earned a 102 Beyer speed figure. Not only was he the Champion Two-Year-Old, but he backed it up again this year with a Gr.1 win at three. His brilliance on the track is reinforced with a pedigree full of black type that traces back to Harlan’s Holiday. We couldn’t be more excited to be standing him.”

A fee will be announced at a later date.

RACING WELFARE NAMED OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNER OF CHAMPIONS DAYRacing Welfare will be the official charity partner of QIPCO British Champions Day, following on from the British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre last year. The charity will benefit from promotion

around the racecourse throughout the day and a bucket collection on the exits. In addition, Racing Welfare Ambassador Darren Bird – aka Birdie – will be creating a cartoon exhibit in the centre of the Ascot grandstand throughout the afternoon, with the resulting six canvas artworks to be auctioned in aid of Racing Welfare during and after the event. The auction can be accessed online HERE.

Racing Welfare is the only charity that supports the entirety of the workforce of British horseracing, from the stable and stud staff to those who work on the racecourses and beyond. Professional advice, practical help and emotional support is offered to those at the recruitment stage through to those in retirement. In 2016, more than 2,000 racing staff received support from Racing Welfare, a number which is increasing year-on-year. The charity also has more than 140 units of accommodation which are rented, at affordable rates, to young people entering the industry and to staff who have retired after dedicating their career to horseracing.

Dawn Goodfellow, CEO of Racing Welfare, commented: “We are pleased to have been named official charity partner for QIPCO British Champions Day following an agreement in July and have been working on a number of activities to highlight our work on the day. Not only will it help us to raise vital funds to support racing’s workforce, it also gives us the chance to demonstrate how important the team behind every Champion horse is to an audience of enthusiastic, engaged racegoers. As the tragic events of the weekend have shown, there is a small but ever-present risk when working with horses. We in racing owe so much to the staff who provide such amazing care to our racehorses.”

HOGAN AND HEFFERNAN WIN CURRAGH AWARDSDenis Hogan and Seamus Heffernan won the leading training and riding performances of 2017 at the Curragh Racing Awards on Tuesday night at Kildare Village. Attended by some of Ireland’s biggest names in racing, including Aidan O’Brien, Jim Bolger and Michael Kinane, as well as leading owners, like Luke Comer and John Corcoran, and many other leading figures, Hogan and Heffernan were the big winners on the night. Hogan was nominated for the victories of Tithonus in both the valuable Rockingham and Scurry Premier Handicaps, while Heffernan was awarded the accolade for his successful ride on Capri in the Gr.1 Irish Derby.

The Special Achievement Awards were presented to Curragh-based trainer Takashi Kodama following the success of Elusive Time in the prestigious Irish Cambridgeshire and to 17-year-old jockey Cian MacRedmond, whose first ride in a race was also his very first win when he won on Sweetest Taboo in August.

JANET CHAPLINBreeder and pinhooker Janet Chaplin died last week a tthe age of 87 at her home in Northumberland. Having spent most of her life at Blisbury Farm in Gloucestershire, running a herd of cows, she also kept a few mares at the farm and pinhooked a few foals each year. She bred the Gr.3 Europachampionat winner Flying Dream (Most Welcome) and the Gr.3 Arlington-Washington Breeders’ Cup Futurity winner Officer Rocket (Officer). She also pinhooked the three-time winner and Listed King Charles II Stakes-fourth Tumbleweed Pearl (Aragon), who became the dam of the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Gilded (Redback; dam of the multiple Listed winner and Gr.3-placed sprinter Fort Del Oro).

A thanksgiving for her life will be held at St Peter’s Church, Newbrough, near Hexham, Northumberland on Friday, 27th October at 2.30pm.

RACING ROUND-UPLISTED AND CONDITIONS RACES

PRIDE STAKES, 10F, 3YO+ FILLIES AND MARES, NEWMARKETThis was a strong contest, but nothing got to the 2015 winner Chain Of Daisies (Rail Link), who powered along the whole way as she likes to do, loving the good ground – the softest she will put up with. The five-year-old has previously won a Gr.3 and two Listed races and in this form she could do so again, provided she can find a suitable surface.

CARLINGFORD STAKES, 10½F, 3YO+, DUNDALKThere was a wide variety of ability on show, but another Frankel blueblood beating a 100-rated rival on her second start, albeit getting a lot of weight, makes this a result worth remembering. Three-year-old Goldrush is out of the fine mare Alexandra Goldrun (Gold Away), the winner of five Gr.1s over ten furlongs, and she stayed on well to gain the day inside the last furlong, looking as if she will get further and be a challenger in the decent programme for older fillies next season.

DARLEY EBF BOADICEA STAKES, 6F, 3YO+ FILLIES AND MARES, NEWMARKETThe ground had become a bit faster by the Saturday for this fair contest, with only two of the twelve rated over 100, but most in the 90s. Three-year-old Eartha Kitt (Pivotal), a useful handicapper but also second in a Listed race and third in a Gr.3, was a deserved winner of big black type after she got up close home, though she won quite snugly in the end. She is likely to stay in training and could add to her haul as she grows up.

ROCKINGHAM STAKES, 6F, 2YO, YORKThere was quite a wide range of ability in this as well, but its core was sound and Rebel Assault (Excelebration) looks a progressive sort, getting home over the six she needs, having been a bit weak before, but finding five too sharp at this level. She was game too, as she held the lead, lost it to It Don’t Come Easy (Kyllachy), who also battled well and achieved his best result, but then fought back and looked in control by the end. She might run again this year, but she will make up into a useful three-year-old.

NAVIGATION STAKES, 8½F, 3YO+, CORKTo call eight-year-old Brendan Bracken (Big Bad Bob) a standing dish in this race is an understatement, as he took it for the third time running on Saturday in the very soft ground, but not in his usual dominant style, rather after being held up off a decent gallop. He had to be rousted briefly, but won what was a very fair race with relative ease. He is particularly effective here, having also won the Listed Platinum Stakes here, as well as the Gr.3 Solonoway Stakes at the Curragh four years ago. He ran his only poor race in the Platinum this year, but he has been third in a Gr.2 and fourth in a Gr.3, so he is not just useful round the old Mallow track, though he will doubtless be treated in a fashion to get him back here next year.

EBF GARNET STAKES, 8F, 3YO+, NAASThis was a decent contest and provided a very close finish, as three-year-old Elegant Pose (Elusive Pimpernel) got up in the final stride to score by a short head and three-quarters of a length. The second, Making Light (Tamayuz), won the Gr.3 Killavullan Stakes last year, but this was her third Listed place this season and it must have been frustrating to see her denied right on the line. Elegant Pose is now three from four, her only reverse coming when third in a Listed race on her previous start. She may develop further next season and should be able to challenge at a higher level, especially against her own sex.

ANJAAL EBF BLUEBELL STAKES, 12F, 3YO+ FILLIES AND MARES, NAASThis was not a strong race, indicating the welcome initiatives to help stayers and Classic horses have a way to go, though overall it was about up to standard. Red Stars (Manduro) has knocked about at this level on numerous occasions, however, and this provided her second win at the grade, adding to a number of places. She enjoys give in the ground and is tough and genuine, and she may run in the November Handicap back at the track.

BECKFORD STAKES, 14F, 3YO+ FILLIES AND MARES, YARMOUTHTransferred from Bath, this was just about up to standard, but no more, though the winner is definitely worth her big black type. Aljezeera (Frankel) had been placed twice at Listed level and second in what was admittedly a weak Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes on her previous start; she was always going well and won with plenty in hand. She has every chance of improving over another winter and making up into a useful four-year-old who can challenge again at Group level, not least the Park Hill next season.

Skipping a generationWhen she retired to stud as a five-year-old in 1988 Gesedeh

seemed to have everything going for her as a potential broodmare. A rangy mare by the good broodmare sire

Ela-Mana-Mou, she had cost Sheikh Ahmed al Maktoum 200,000gns as a yearling. Sent to be trained by Michael Jarvis, she had been unraced at two, but had soon made up for lost time, winning her first two starts at three, including the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. Then, after being badly hampered in the Gr.1 Oaks on her next start, she had gone on to gain two further victories, including the Gr.3 Prix de Flore at Saint-Cloud and to finish runner-up in the Gr.2 (then) Sun Chariot Stakes.

Kept in training at four, she had failed to add to that score, but had run very creditably, largely in Group company, most notably when third to Mtoto in the Gr.2 Prince of Wales’s Stakes and in the Gr.2 Bayerisches-Zuchtrennen, both of which are now Gr.1 contests.

She possessed a notable pedigree too, being a half-sister to the top-class colt Ardross, who, in an era of exceptional stayers, had been a dual winner of the Gr.1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, besides winning the Gr.1 Prix Royal-Oak and being only narrowly beaten in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on his swansong.

Her dam Le Melody, a daughter of Levmoss, who completed the Gold Cup/Arc double and a brother of Ardross’s great rival Le Moss, had won her only two starts, over seven and ten furlongs, at two and three in Ireland. By that stage, she had already bred the Listed Trigo Stakes winner Karol, a son of Kalamoun, who was also runner-up in the Gr.2 (then) Rogers Gold Cup Ballymoss Stakes; and the Listed-placed Khozdar, who was by Nishapour. Later she was to breed the smart filly Larrocha.

Le Melody was out of Arctic Melody, who, in a season that was restricted by injury, had won her only three starts at three. Trained in Ireland by Paddy Prendergast Jnr, she won the Athasi Stakes, before venturing to England, where she gained a notable scalp when beating Aunt Edith by a head in the Musidora Stakes, with

the 1,000 Guineas winner Night Off finishing down the field. She had failed to add to that record when kept in training for another season, but had still managed to finish fourth behind Silly Season in the Lockinge Stakes and then sixth behind Pieces Of Eight in the Eclipse.

She had a surprising background for a filly of her class. Her sire Arctic Slave had been no more than a very useful middle-distance handicapper; and only when feeling so inclined. Timeform summed him up by saying, ”he has plenty of ability, but in nine cases out of ten hasn’t any intention of displaying it.” Despite that record, he had found a place at stud and went on to become a leading sire of jumpers and in due course became the broodmare sire of that great mare Dawn Run, the only horse to win both the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Arctic Melody’s dam, a dual winner over the minimum trip in Ireland, was by Mustang, who is best remembered as the sire of the Irish Derby winner Thirteen Of Diamonds, the King’s Stand Stakes winner Tangle, himself another good jumps sire, and the very good filly Munch, winner of the Cherry Hinton Stakes.

All good families have to start somewhere and Arctic Melody was to become a distinguished mare for the Prendergast family. Among her produce already then on the ground were the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Arctique Royale (Royal And Regal) and the dual Irish Listed winner Racquette (Ballymore), who was also third in the Gr.1 Irish Oaks. Both were to become excellent mares, Arctique Royale in particular, as did their winning half-sister Nilie, a daughter of Relko.

When Ardross was retired to stud in 1984, he had to overcome a growing prejudice against stayers. Timeform rightly predicted that, “unless he proves capable of siring high-class middle-distance performers – as the stayer High Line has done, for example – we fear that commercial breeders will quickly lose interest in him.” In the event, he did manage to come up with some smart performers,

Memorial Stakes at Newbury by six lengths at three, before largely fulfilling pace making roles for the remainder of that season. Kept in training as a four-year-old, she showed she stayed well, winning twice in handicap company at Goodwood and Kempton Park over 16 furlongs, and being placed in Listed company over 13 furlongs at Lingfield Park.

Retained for stud, Rumh has made a very promising start. Her first foal is the Shamardal filly Really Special, who won the Listed Montrose Fillies’ Stakes as a juvenile last season and was placed third in the Listed Meydan Classic earlier this year in Dubai.

Her second foal is the two-year-old Dubawi filly Wild Illusion. On Arc day, she made all the running in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac to beat the previously unbeaten Polydream comfortably. In doing so, she gave her trainer Charlie Appleby back-to-back wins in the race with homebred fillies, following on from Wuheida’s success last year. Wild Illusion was her sire’s 33rd Gr.1 winner, but she and Wuheida are his only juvenile winners at that level so far. His total of Stakes winners overall has now risen to 143, with the Darley-bred fillies Wild Bud and Crystal River, who is bred on the same Singspiel cross as Wuheida, winning Listed races in Germany and France over the last two weekends; and then Godolphin’s expensive foal purchase, the very promising two-year-old Ghaiyyath, appropriately landing the Masar Godolphin-sponsored Gr.3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday.

A smart winner on her debut for Appleby at Yarmouth, Wild Illusion had obviously learnt a lot on her only other previous start, when finishing third in the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale over the same course and distance as the Boussac behind Soustraction. Described as, “genuine as the day is long” by her trainer, she is seen by him as an Oaks prospect. It is to be hoped that the fates are kinder to her than they have been to Wuheida, who finished a close-up fourth to Rhododendron in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Opera later on the card. In a season abbreviated by injury, she has yet to add to her win last year, though she has been in the frame on all her four starts, all in Gr.1 company.

Whatever Wild Illusion’s fate, Gesedeh can thank her daughters for overcoming her own rather disappointing record, with four individual Gr.1 winners now descended from her.

notably the high-class German filly Filia Ardross, winner of the Gr.1 Preis der Diana; the very smart Alderbrook, winner of the Gr.2 Prix Dollar and runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Ganay on the Flat and winner of the Champion Hurdle over jumps; and the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes winner Karinga Bay. But, they were not enough to prevent him ending up as a jumps sire, and a very good one at that.

All then looked set fair for Gesedeh. As it turned out, her own stud record could not have been much more disappointing. In her defence, it was some achievement that she bred two winners by Arazi, an outstanding racehorse, but by comparison largely a bitter disappointment at stud. However, they were the only two winners that she managed to breed from eight foals.

It is frequently said that class can often skip a generation and so it was to prove with Gesedeh. Remarkably, no less than three of her daughters were to go on to produce Gr.1 winners. Her first foal, the unraced Dancing Brave filly, Dance On The Stage, was also the first off the mark, becoming the dam of the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby winner Robertico, a son of Robellino. The quite useful Elbaaha, one of her two winners by Arazi, followed. She was culled by Darley, carrying the future Gr.1 Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist, whom Godolphin bought privately after his four-year-old career – undoubtedly for considerably more money! The winner of eight of his eleven starts, including the Gr.1 International Stakes, the ill-fated Electrocutionist was bred on similar lines to Robertico, being by Red Ransom, another son of Robellino’s sire Roberto.

Lastly the Nashwan filly Reem Dubai, who was placed at three, completed the record by breeding the very smart Monsun filly Royal Highness, whose victories in the States included a win in the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes at Arlington, following a successful career in France, where she won the Gr.2 Prix de Malleret. She went on to become the dam of the smart French colt Free Port Lux (Oasis Dream), winner of the Gr.2 Prix Dollar and the Gr.2 Prix Hocquart.

Reem Dubai was also the dam of Royal Dubai, a daughter of Dashing Blade, who was the top-rated filly of her year in Germany, after winning their most important juvenile contest for fillies, the Gr.3 Preis der Winterkonigin. She in turn is the dam of Rumh, another by Monsun, who was acquired by Godolphin for 300,000gns as a yearling.

Monsun had a very good record with mares by Nashwan and his half-brother Unfuwain, whose dam was inbred to Feola, as was Authi, the sire of Monsun’s second dam. Rumh proved to be a pretty useful filly in her own right, winning her final start at two. She then went on to capture the ten-furlong Listed Lord Weinstock

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

ALOISIA ON TARGET FOR VRC OAKSAloisia (NZ) (Azamour) has shortened into A$3.50 favouritism for the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) after her victory in the Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

“We came here expecting her to run well, but her aim has always been towards the Oaks,” trainer Aaron Purcell said. “We’ll keep pushing on.”

OTI Racing manager Terry Henderson said the filly might start against Winx in the Gr.1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on her way to the Oaks, sighting she needed a start over the 2040m distance on her way to the Oaks’ 2500m.

“We’ll talk about the [Gr.1] Cox Plate seriously,” Henderson said. “It will be either that race or the Vase on the same day.”

From the only Southern Hemisphere crop of the ill-fated Azamour, who stood at Brighthill Farm near Hamilton, Aloisia is out of the former smart juvenile Queen Boudicca. She was a two-year-old winner and also finished third in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and sixth in the Karaka Million.

Aloisia was bred by her original trainer Jason Price, his wife Kelly and her brother Michael Hall.

The talented filly caught the eye of respected bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo, who negotiated her private sale to Terry Henderson’s OTI racing operation.

Transferred to the Caulfield stable of Ciaron Maher, Aloisia was an impressive winner at Flemington on her Australian debut, before finishing a luckless second in the Gr.1 J J Atkins Stakes (1600m).

55 STAKES WINS FOR IFFRAAJHaunui Farm shuttle stallion Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) picked up his 55th Stakes win as a sire over the weekend when Renfrew Street (GB) won the Listed Kolner Steher Cup.

The four-year-old mare won the 3000m race by three-quarters of a length.

Iffraaj has had a standout season with Gr.1 performers in both hemispheres. Three-time Gr.1 winner Gingernuts (NZ) and Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) winner Jon Snow (NZ) have been flying his flag in the southern hemisphere, while four-time Gr.1 winner Ribchester (Ire) has been doing the same in the Northern Hemisphere.

Iffraaj shuttles to Haunui Farm’s Auckland property where he stands for NZ$25,000+gst.

THIRD STAKES WINNER FOR RELIABLE MANTwo-year-old colt Erasmus (Ger) became his sire Reliable Man’s (GB) (Dalakhani) third Stakes winner after running out to a wide margin victory in the Gr.3 Pries des Winterfavoriten (1600m) in Cologne at the weekend.

Erasmus joins Narella (Ire) and Main Stage (NZ) as Reliable Man’s Stakes winners to date, with Narella winning the Gr.3 Zukunfts Rennen (1400m), while Main Stage was victorious in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m).

Reliable Man also has a number of promising gallopers threatening to feature in Classic races in Australia this spring.

They include Main Stage and Gr.1 place-getter Sully (NZ), who are both heading to the Gr.1 VRC Derby (2500m) on 4th November, while Lilas (NZ) and Reliable Dame (NZ) are set to tackle the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) on 9th November.

Reliable Man was a Gr.1 winner in both hemispheres, winning the Prix du Jockey Club (2100m) at Chantilly and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in Australia. He was also victorious in the Gr.2 Prix Niel over 2400m.

He stands at Westbury Stud’s Karaka property for a service fee of NZ$17,500+gst.

Aloisia winning the Gr.1 Thousand Guineas on Saturday.

Points of View WITH CARL EVANS

STAR PERFORMERBLUE FLIGHT (Fr), 5g,

Blue Bresil – Lover Flight (Saint Cyrien) O: Wilson Dennison, B: Patrick Boiteau, T: Colin McKeever

After showing some merit in two races in the spring, this horse returned looking an improved performer at Loughanmore on Saturday. He had finished second on debut at Portrush to Some Man, who subsequently made £165,000 at Goffs’ Aintree Sale, but failed to build on that when turning out a couple of weeks later. He was primed and ready at Loughanmore, however, where he landed an 11-runner maiden, quickening on the run-in to score cosily after a slow jump at the last which would have cooked a lesser horse. Runner-up The Some Dance Kid is another to note – he is out of a half-sister to the dam of sire Sir Prancealot. Blue Flight is a son of Blue Bresil, who moved from France and is about to stand his third season at Yorton Farm Stud. Blue Bresil has now had a couple of winners out of Saint Cyrien mares on this side of The Channel, and this horse is the third successful foal produced by Lover Flight, who won over hurdles in France. Her son is currently trained by Colin McKeever for Wilson Dennison, the duo who teamed up to prepare record-priced, but ill-fated, Flemenshill for his sole race before his £480,000 sale at Cheltenham.

RATH AN IUIR (Ire), 4g, Flemensfirth – Amathea (Exit To Nowhere) O: Milestone Syndicate , B: Godfrey Moylan, T: Colin Bowe €23,000 2013 Tattersalls Ireland November Sale by Richard Rohan consigned by Rathclogh House Stud €62,000 2016 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale by Colin Bowe consigned by Ballincurrig House Stud

Winning by a short head at Loughrea on Sunday this horse showed great determination, for he was just over a neck behind fellow four-year-old Passageway at the last fence, but battled hard under Ireland’s reigning point-to-point Champion, Barry O’Neill. The first and second have similar profiles, having shown promise in the spring and pedigrees that suggest they can win

more races. Buyers had a chance to secure this horse at Cheltenham’s May Sale, but he returned to Colin Bowe’s stable after bidding halted at £58,000. His dam won in France and has now produced seven winners, and she was a full- or half-sister to several Graded winners over jumps in France.

CANYOURINGMEBACK (Ire), 5g, Robin Des Pres – Hunters Bar (Treasure Hunter) O: Con McSweeney, B: Madeline Keane, T: Roisin Hickey €7,000 2015 Tattersalls Ireland August Sale by Con McSweeney, consigned by Bishopstown Stud

Backed from 10/1 into 3/1 when making his debut at Killeagh in January this horse finished a very promising third, but was not seen again at the races until turning up at Loughrea, where he duly landed the five-year-old maiden race. He was slick over the third and second-last fences and quickened up to take on second-placed Well Tom off the final turn under a waiting ride by Jamie Codd. The runner-up responded but could not get back at Canyouringmeback, who was an inexpensive store, but now worth a good bit more. His dam was tough and busy, winning three times from 46 starts before retiring to the breeding sheds, and while she has yet to produce a winner under Rules, her mating with Anngrove Stud’s Robin Des Pres appears to have resulted in a horse who could achieve that goal.

AMY MURPHY RACING OWNERS DAYHamilton Stables, Newmarket, Suffolk

Britain’s youngest trainer Amy Murphy opened the doors of her Hamilton Stables in Newmarket on Sunday for her first Owners Day – and did it in style. Welcoming over 70 guests, she started with a Champagne reception and paraded 22 of her string, including some new yearling recruits which are for sale or have shares available. Giving commentary with her bloodstock agent Matt Coleman, the pair gave an insight to each individual and expanded on the details given in the glossy brochure that was available. The yard was then open for visitors to have a look at the facilities available and to talk to Amy and the staff before a full sit-down lunch was served in the marquee. There is already the Amy Murphy Racing Club, which has enjoyed success with Entertaining Ben, but the day also saw the launch of ‘The Prosecco Club’ which is a new syndicate for women that is available for £99 per month + VAT and is starting out with Shan Dun Na Ngall, who has won three times since joining the yard last year.

Connaught Ranger (Finsceal Fior) was unable to win with his penalty in a median auction novice at Kempton on Saturday evening, but he came an honourable third behind Blue Mist (Makfi), who made a worthy debut and looks an interesting sort for next year, as he showed a pleasing turn of speed and scored easily despite being understandably green.

Marnie James (Camacho) had been freshened up by trainer Iain Jardine after a busy period which yielded a win in a quite valuable nursery at York and, under a useful claimer, he took over the running in a five-furlong novice on soft ground at Musselburgh on Monday a furlong out and was over three lengths clear at the line. This is his trip and surface, though he will not be easy to place after this.

All Out (Acclamation) was just that to defy her penalty in an EBF novice stakes over six at Windsor on Monday after giving Global Tango (Zebedee) and Spenny’s Lass (Bated Breath) a fair start, but the latter faded and she got up by a neck. She may well try and grab a bit of black type before the season ends, with the Listed Doncaster Stakes looking the most obvious target.

Although Bowditch (Nathaniel) has some speed elements in his pedigree, a step up to ten furlongs from a mile in an EBF novice on slow polytrack at Lingfield Park brought about enough improvement for him to win on his fourth start and sink the efforts of the second, Yabass (Lope De Vega), to carry his four-pound penalty to victory. It is fair handicap form.

A first–time hood did not enable Last Voyage (Eskenderaya) to shoulder his penalty to victory in a novice over seven at Kempton Park yesterday evening and he finished fourth, but beaten only a length and a half, behind Archie McKellar (Archipenko), who had shown a fair level of form on his two previous starts and got up after taking over a furlong out. He should make up into a decent handicapper.

2. ALTEA (Fr), 2f, Siyouni – Ensis (Zieten) O/B: Carlos Vazquez Gonzalez, T: Philippe Sogorb

3. PRONTAMENTE (GB), 2f, More Than Ready – Specific Dream (Danehill Dancer) O: Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard and Mrs A G Kavanagh, B: Newsells Park Stud, T: Fabrice Chappet

CONDITIONS RACESThe all-age event over ten furlongs at Chelmsford on Thursday evening was a very decent contest, run at a sound gallop. Victory Bond (Medicean) had to be switched after sitting fourth of five most of the way but managed to outpace the slow-starting Boynton (More Than Ready) by half a length, with Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) another half-length away in third. The lightly-raced four-year-old has not proved easy to place off his mark of 105, but now that he has proved to like synthetic surfaces, he might be useful over the winter.

The EBF auction race final over seven on soft ground at Naas was a fair conditions race, though with only one juvenile rated over 90 amongst the field of 16, but one without a mark sluiced home by six lengths without being extended after taking up the running a furlong out. Yulong Gold Fairy (Mount Nelson) had won a maiden at Galway on her third start when the Weld stable was not going well in early August and this was her first run since. This was undoubtedly an improvement and she will presumably head to Stakes races with a decent chance of making her mark.

Two of the five in an EBF conditions race over five on soft ground at Musselburgh on Monday stood out on ratings and six-year-old Alpha Delphini (Captain Gerrard), on a mark of 107 and the strong favourite, saw off four-year-old Ornate (Bahamian Bounty) by a length, with the two of them having it between them really. This confirmed Beverley form and he is an admirable credit to Bryan Smart.

NOVICE STAKES WITH WINNERSA number of winners saddled their penalties with success this week. Two winners slogged through the mud to have an EBF novice over a mile at Ayr on Thursday between them, before Wax And Wane (Maxios) gained the day from Lynwood Gold (Mastercraftsman). Both horses have a future probably and the winner even holds a Gr.1 Derby entry.

Morlock (Epaulette) could only finish third giving seven pounds to Main Street (Street Cry) in a novice on polytrack at Chelmsford over a mile, but it may turn out to have been a stiff ask, as John Gosden’s charge, who was fancied on his Newmarket debut, came from near last to first after being slowly away and driven along early, before scoring well. One could see him running in America eventually.

The EBF novice over five and a half furlongs at York on Friday on dead ground was not a great race, but Awesome (Bahamian Bounty) still deserves credit for making all and seeing off all comers. Barford (Big Bad Bob) achieved the same feat in a novice auction over a mile later in the afternoon, improving on his mark of 79 by about half a stone. He will not be the easiest to place, especially as he is not over big, but he is game.

Clairette (Al Kazeem) was another who could only come third under a penalty, this time in a fillies’ novice on slow polytrack at Kempton Park in the evening as future fair handicappers Cavatina (Lethal Force) and Scandaleuse (War Front) fought out the finish, the former prevailing by a head.

Air Raid (Raven’s Pass) finished fourth with his extra six pounds, as 77-rated Mont Kinabalu became another winner for Society Rock in the EBF novice over seven at York on Saturday, holding on well after taking up the running two furlongs out. Kevin Ryan sees him as a project for next season.

Many breeders now conduct their research online and your stallion advertising needs to take account of this.

We have built a fully comprehensive and responsive website that gives breeders the tools to conceive their mating plans on whichever digital platform they prefer, be it Desktop, Laptop, Tablet or Mobile.

Racing data will be updated on a daily feed and sales data will be updated a few days after the sale.

All data is being supplied by ARION PEDIGREES a long-established and well respected company which maintains a worldwide database of racing and sales results.

By advertising both on the site and in the traditional Thoroughbred Stallion Guide book, stallion owners really can get two bites of the same cherry.
