LUCIA GIVES A TASTE OF WHAT MAY BE TO COMEFILLY BEATS THE BOYS TO TAKE OUT WELLINGTON STAKES

The exciting filly Lucia Valentina

(Savabeel) delivered on her early

promise and gave a glimpse into

what could be a mouthwatering

future as she landed the Wellington Stakes

(Gr 3, 1600m) at Levin yesterday.

Stephen Marsh’s three-year-old saw off

the colts, lengthening her stride impressively

to prevail over Glorious Lad (Falkirk) by

almost half a length, with Lucky Feather

(Darci Brahma) a length further back.

Delighted connections predicted the

best is yet to come from the filly out of

the Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Staryn

Glenn, who capped a perfect day for the

team having followed up the earlier victory

of stablemate Barbaric (Pins) in the Levin

Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

“We’ve had a good day and got both the

features and I’m rapt to do it with two horses

really going through the grades,” Marsh said.

A NZ$60,000 purchase from the 2012

New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling

Sale by Bruce Perry Bloodstock, Lucia

Valentina (3 f Savabeel – Staryn Glenn by

Montjeu) is raced by JML Bloodstock, whose

colours were also carried to victory in the

New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)

by Atlante (Fastnet Rock), and was making

only her third appearance, having won a

1200 metre maiden first-up at Tauranga

before being denied racing room when sixth

at Te Rapa.

“She’s obviously very talented and she

should be unbeaten,” Marsh said. “We went

out with a plan to ride her a bit cooler and

Leith Innes rode her beautifully. He got her

out and presented her in the middle of the

track and she picked up really well.

“She’s gone 1200 metres, 1400 and

now a mile and when she gets to 2000

metres and further she’ll be even better.”

Lucia Valentina is a half sister to the

Group Three winner Malandrino (Darci

Brahma) who raced in Hong Kong as Best

Show. Her dam is a half sister to the Group

winner Silky Red Boxer (Casual Lies) and the

stakes placed Gretchen (Bahhare) and Go

with Fritzy Boy (Brilliance) a further half-length back in third.

Marsh has never doubted Barbaric’s talent and it is only been a

case of whether the five-year-old’s troublesome feet and joints would

allow him to realise his potential.

The Cambridge trainer tagged him as a potential Group One horse

some time ago and the gelding’s performance yesterday suggests he

could be on the verge of cracking the big time.

“He’s definitely a Telegraph horse and that’s where he’s been

aimed for a while and now he’s right that is where he’s headed,”

Marsh said.

Bred and raced by Goodwood Stud, Barbaric (5 g Pins – Burnzees

Magic by Kinjite) has won five of his 11 starts, amassing NZ$74,161

in prize money, during a career that has been regularly interrupted by

injury. Marsh attributed maturity and a lengthy break following his last

preparation, which ended in April, as the two key factors behind the

horse’s current soundness.

Barbaric didn’t leave the gates brilliantly in yesterday’s race and

was then squeezed back before rider Matt Cameron was able to get

him into the clear at the top of the straight.

Pacemaker Eight Schillings set a solid clip in front and was

holding a strong gallop in the closing 100 metres before Barbaric

thundered home wide out to nail him right on the wire.

“I didn’t want to be that far back, but he never jumps that well

and the others came across and we got shuffled back,” Cameron

said.

“He’s really come right and feeling good. Stephen’s done a great

job with him.”

Out of the winning mare Burnzees Magic (Kinjite), Barbaric

is a half brother to one winner whilst his third dam is the Railway

Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Ajasco (Pakistan II) who produced

seven winners including Silver Liner (Sovereign Edition), who also won

the Railway Handicap. This is also the family of the South African

Champions in Petrava (Imposing), Hoeberg (Maroof) and Princess

Victoria (Victory Moon).

The difficult decision to geld Ninth Legion (Fastnet Rock)

is being justified by solid recent performances from the

four-year-old, who lines up in today’s Festival Stakes

(Listed, 1500m).

A promising youngster, Ninth Legion raced well against Pierro

(Lonhro), All Too Hard (Casino Prince) and Epaulette (Commands) as

a three-year-old, including a fourth in the 2012 Golden Rose Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m).

But his focus had already begun to shift from the racetrack to

the fillies and at the end of last autumn, owners Segenhoe Stud had

him gelded.

“It’s a hard call because you’ve got a Fastnet Rock colt that’s

showing a lot of promise and you either try to get a racehorse, or you

end up with nothing,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

“Everyone thinks they’ve got a Fastnet Rock colt so they can

have a stallion but that doesn’t always work.

“To Segenhoe’s credit, we gelded the horse and this prep has

been fantastic.”

Ninth Legion heads to Rosehill in winning form after scoring over

1350 metres at the same track last start when he stalked the speed.

At his previous start he went down by the barest of margins

to Tromso (Lonhro) in the Ladies Day Cup (Listed, 1400m) at

Hawkesbury on 7 November, a run which followed a solid first-up

fifth to Famous Seamus (Elusive City) in the Lightning Handicap

(Listed, 1100m).

While he is yet to win beyond 1400 metres, Hawkes has no

qualms over Ninth Legion coping with 1500 metres on Saturday.

He finished fifth from a wide gate in the TJ Smith (Gr 1, 1600m)

as a juvenile under then-trainer Anthony Cummings and was runner-

up to Toydini (Bernardini) in the Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) over

Saturday’s distance in the autumn.

“It’s probably right up his alley now he’s a bit older, a bit wiser

and he’s wanting to be a racehorse,” Hawkes said.

Ninth Legion has drawn barrier four in the Festival Stakes which

has attracted a full field of 15 plus three reserves.

The race is a traditional lead-up to the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) run at Randwick 14 December and the main summer

target for many of Saturday’s runners, including Ninth Legion.

One horse who will not be pressing onto the feature mile is early

Festival Stakes favourite Terravista (Captain Rio).

Trainer Joe Pride confirmed the gelding would be spelled after

Saturday with a view to the autumn.

WALTER PLAYS DOWN JACQUINOT BAY EXPECTATIONS

Jacquinot Bay’s (Galileo) first-up record is flawless but his trainer

Guy Walter is keeping a lid on his expectations heading to Rosehill.

The six-year-old will be up against a strong field of sprinters

in Saturday’s Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m), including his

stablemate Straight Albert (Magic Albert) who is returning from an

injury-enforced break of more than a year.

The winner of six of his ten starts and two from two when fresh,

Jacquinot Bay’s autumn carnival was cut short when he failed to

measure up in the Doncaster Mile Prelude (Gr 3, 1600m) won by

his now-retired stablemate Skyerush (Super Jet).

“He does have a good fresh record but I’m not sure if he’s got

the speed over 1100 metres,” Walter said.

“Straight Albert is coming back from a tendon injury and he may

also find them a bit quick. I’m very happy with both of them.

“Straight Albert has had two preparations since the injury and is

in great shape but time will tell. His work has been really good but

it’s hard to know until you put them under race pressure.

“And I want to see Jacquinot Bay back in winning form before we

make any ambitious plans for him.”

A late bloomer who did not race until he was a late four-year-old,

Jacquinot Bay was beaten just once in his first seven starts.

Straight Albert, the winner of seven of his 19 starts, strung

together four wins in late 2011 and early 2012 including the

Goulburn Cup (1600m) and the Gosford Cup (Listed, 2100m).

He has not raced since the 2012 Newmarket Handicap at

Newcastle (Gr 3, 1400m) in March but has had two barrier trials,

the latest when third to Jacquinot Bay at Goulburn earlier this month.

Peter Robl rides Jacquinot Bay while Blake Shinn partners

Straight Albert.

Last-start Rosehill winner Heart Testa (Testa Rossa) heads the

TAB’s fixed odds market at $3 ahead of Safeguard (Exceed And

Excel) at $4.20.

Safeguard is a dual Group Three winner of the Kindergarten

Stakes (1100m) the Vain Stakes (1100m) and the Peter Snowden-

trained colt was last seen when sixth at the Flemington carnival in

the Earl Grey Stakes (registered as Century Stakes) (Listed, 1000m)

won by Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice).

The Tattersalls December Foal Sale stepped up a gear

on the second day with the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross)

half-sister to Spinning Queen (Spinning World) selling

for 320,000gns and the major indicators all up on the

corresponding session last year.

The turnover was up 24 per cent to 6,825,700gns for the 202

lots sold whilst the average and median rose 27 per cent and 35 per

cent to 33,791gns and 27,000gns respectively.

Lot 761, a Sea The Stars half-sister to the Sun Chariot Stakes

(Gr 1, 1m) winner Spinning Queen, became the top priced filly foal in

Europe this year when knocked down to Charlie Gordon-Watson for

320,000 guineas.

“This is one for the long-term,” said Gordon-Watson. “She is a

beautiful filly, one of my picks of the week, a great mover and there

is everything to like about her.

“It’s a lovely family - the half-sister Spinning World is in good

hands, as is Gallipot. I also really believe in Sea The Stars and feel

that he will come good.”

Underbidders included Hugo Lascelles, Philipp von Stauffenberg

and John Clarke, who was taking instructions over the telephone and

who provided the final opposition to Gordon-Watson.

The filly was sold by Newsells Park Stud, who also consigned the

Darley shuttle sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill) colt out of the Listed

winner Jane Austen (Galileo), Lot 762, that was knocked down to

John Ferguson for 130,000gns.

It was in this ring in 2007 that Charlie Gordon-Watson secured

the Cadeaux Genereux (Young Generation) colt out of Artisia (Peintre

Celebre) for 55,000gns. Subsequently named Red Cadeaux, he

is now the winner of almost £4,000,000 in prize money in an

international career that has seen him victorious in the Hong Kong

Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) as well as runner-up in the Melbourne Cup (Gr

1, 3200m) twice, as well as the Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

So it was no surprise to see Gordon-Watson secure that colt’s half-

brother, Lot 626, by Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo), offered here by

Drumachon Stud for 220,000 guineas after seeing off a determined

John Ferguson.

“He’s for Ronald Arculli, Red Cadeaux’s owner,” said Gordon-

Watson. “Red Cadeaux has paid for him, after all he’s won

£4,000,000. I also feel that Teofilo is a top sire.”

On the racecourse the Dansili (Danehill) colt Zoffany got closer

to the legendary Frankel (Galileo) than most of his contemporaries

when second by three quarters of a length in the St James’s Palace

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot and his first crop of foals have been

very well received in the sale ring. None more so than Lot 660, a

colt out of the Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Mount Crystal, who

was knocked down to Camas Park Stud’s Timmy Hyde for 130,000

guineas.

The sale represented a great result for her consignors Stringston

Farm, who bought the daughter of the Group One performer State

Crystal (High Estate) for 24,000gns carrying this foal at the 2012

Tattersalls December Mare Sale.

Two other shuttle sires each generated 90,000gns, with first

Haunui Farm’s Iffraaj (Zafonic) having Lot 619 knocked down to

Liam Norris, while Blue Gum Farm shuttler Canford Cliffs (Tagula)

colt, Lot 788, went for the same price to Yeomanstown Stud.

Norris said afterwards: “I hope I don’t look silly next year. I thought

I’d have to go big to buy him but the sire has had a good season, the

mare was 90-rated and we’ll bring him back from Clairemont next

autumn.”

The Steven Burridge-trained Goliath (Darci Brahma)

continued his winning ways with victory in the S$95,000

Kranji Stakes B over 1700m on Friday night.

Ridden by Corey Borwn, Goliath scored by a length-

and-a-quarter from Meaisin (Zabeel) with Flying Tempo (Royal

Applause) the same margin back in third place.

Goliath has now won four of his last seven starts which included a

dead-heat victory with stablemate Joyous Express (Danehill Express)

on 3 November.

Burridge said Goliath had pulled-up sore at the end of his last

campaign, which saw him successful in a 1700m Class 4 Stakes on

31 May before going for a break.

“I’ve got to thank farrier Paul Summerville and Dr Curry Keoughan

here at the Turf Club for their work with this horse,” said Burridge.

“He pulled-up lame after the last win back in May and we just

couldn’t find what was wrong with him. He spent time in the stable

and these guys tried different things and eventually he came good.

“He’s found his form again and he’s done a good job tonight.

He just keeps getting the job done but I just don’t know how far he

can go.

“While he’s in form and racing well on the Polytrack we’ll keep

him on that for the moment and hopefully we’ll pick up a few more

wins with him.”

Brown gave Goliath a good run in transit having him placed in

third position behind Flying Tempo and Joyous Express on settling

down.

With a moderate tempo, Brown had Goliath travelling well and he

allowed the gelding to slide up to the share the lead just on turning

for home. He took over with 200 metres to travel before holding off

the late challenge of Meaisin, who looked like making a race of it

with the victor but in the last 100 metres Goliath proved far superior.

Brown said he has been surprised with how Goliath had turned

his form around since riding the gelding at his first run back after the

break back in early October.

“We had the perfect run tonight,” said Brown. “We were up there

out of trouble and even though the pace was a bit muddling he was

well relaxed.

“In the last month he’s really been a different horse. He wants

to put himself into the race and then attack the line at the finish.”

Goliath, a four-year-old New Zealand-bred by Darci Brahma

(Danehill) out of from Beautiful Reward, has won five of his 17 starts

for Jupiter Stable with all five victories coming on the Polytrack.

Friday night’s success took his prizemoney past the

S$200,000 mark.

Analysis: Lucia Valentina travelled comfortably in eighth place on

the rails in the 11-horse field, improved between runners nearing

the 600 metres and pushed wider into clear running shortly after

straightening, where she was giving the leader about four lengths.

She then came with a quick, late run to score going away by a

long neck, putting up a good effort to win and looks a smart filly.

Glorious Lad raced outside the leader, challenged strongly at the

200 metres and took a narrow lead at the 100 metres only to be

caught on the post for a sound second. Lucky feather raced be

hind the leader, challenged on the inner at the 200 metres and

kept fighting on to hold third, beaten a length and a quarter. Dezig

nator led the field until half way down the straight and held on

for fourth, beaten a length and a half, while the favourite, Gobi

Ranger, had a good trip in fifth place between runners and chal

lenged shortly after turning for home but he only kept battling on

from the 200 metre point to finish fifth, beaten three and a half

lengths, after appearing to have every chance.

2010 f. by Thorn Park. 2011 f. by Nom du Jeu.

Analysis: The favourite Barbaric was ridden patiently from barrier

three and settled just past midfield racing in about ninth place,

between runners. He was giving the leader about six lengths coming

to the 400 metres, finally got into the clear at the 200 metres and

produced a very good final sprint to grab a last-stride win. Eight

Schillings drove through to take the lead and settled nicely in front.

He held the lead on straightening, responded well to riding and

looked the winner when narrowly in front at the 100 metres, only to

be headed right on the post for a nose second. Top weight, the nine-

year-old fritzy Boy had a good trip in third spot on the rails before

challenging strongly on the inner at the 200 metres. He then fought

on gamely under his top weight (59kg) for a close third. Captain Kirk

raced outside the leader, challenged strongly mid-stretch and kept

battling on for a sound fourth, beaten length and a half.

Analysis: The John Thompson-trained filly Another Prayer followed

her recent Newcastle Maiden (1850m) success with a good effort

to score in a photo-finish here. She had a nice trip in third spot on

the rails but was hemmed in on straightening before easing across

heels at the 200m. She then switched back to the rails and came

with a late bid to grab a narrow but good win, running the 1800m

out well. She looks the makings of a very handy staying filly. The

Gai Waterhouse-prepared frespanol travelled nicely back in fourth

place, one off the rails, before moving up three wide rounding the

home turn. He looked the winner when he took the lead at the 200m

but was caught in the last stride for a nose second.

Analysis: Devil Miss had a good run in fifth place on the rails, eased

out passing the 400m where she was giving the leader about four

lengths. She put in a quick run from the 200m, hit the lead at the

100m and won comfortably at post by just over a length. Chicago

was sixth one off the rails, challenged at the 200m and battled on

quite well for second.
