Membership Matters – We are a busy club: this summer we participated in the Oceanside Sandcastle event; we have just finished a successful Rose fundraiser, we’ll be occupied with Story Book Village and perhaps the Christmas Home tour in the remainder of the Fall season; planning starts for the Spring Ball soon; Radical Readers should be starting as early as December, and this happens while work on our various Service Committees will be ongoing; also with the AGM coming up we need people to think about stepping up to take on club leadership positions. Sunrise Rotarians At Work

Roses From Rotary 2015 This year was special; it was a fundraising event that we all felt some ownership of as the accolades were handed out at this mornings meeting. Deserving special mention were the co-chairs, Allan and John; Ken who, with help from son Adam developed our on line capability; Deb who engineered an incredible partnership with Save On Foods; Gord, Doug, and Ron who together sold more than 150 dozen Roses and emerged as our top 3 sales persons; finally to all of the other members who shared in the sales and the deliveries, congratulations for a job very well done.

Susan has forged a relationship with BLT that will see our members volunteering at Story Book Village on an ongoing basis. Tonight many of our members will be on hand from 5:30 until 7 pm for a family Halloween special event.

Ahoy all you Radical Reading participants, Deb says things could get underway in early December; stay tuned.

If my math is correct, children born around Halloween were conceived in the dead of winter, could it have something to do with long winter nights……or?

Ø Ian Lindsay celebrates a birthday on October 31st Ø Sheila Hepton celebrates her birthday on November 1st Ø Bill’s birthday is November 2nd Ø John celebrates the day after Sheila on November 2nd, and Ø Steve also celebrates his birthday on November 2nd

Or, was it a trick or treat on that dark winter night?

Three guests this morning; our guest of honour David James; David’s friend and fellow citizen volunteer Pat Jameson; and soon to be inducted into our club Deanna Breneman.

Welcome David, Pat and Deanna!

n May those assembled here today stay focused on, and positively contribute to, the objectives we have for our fellow human beings:

o Peace o Tranquility o A true unity of humanity o Freedom from hunger, from oppression, and from sickness, and o The freedom to choose our own destinies.

May we also reaffirm our commitment to our simple Rotary Four Way Test and to high ethics in all we do.

Stuart chose as his Rotary Moment topic the saga of our Rotary motto the Rotary Wheel:

o In 1905 Harry Ruggles, a printer and one of the original five Chicago Rotarians came up with the symbol of a Wagon Wheel to symbolize civilization, motion and service in action.

o In 1906 engraver Montague Bear added images of clouds to the wheel to depict that the wheel was in motion

o In 1911 another change saw a Rotary Club Banner added and Rotary replaced by Chicago.

o In 1913 gear cogs were added and Chicago was replaced by Rotary and for the first time International Association was added.

o By 1922 there were over 50 different designs in use and at that time it was decided to develop an official Rotary emblem.

o In 1923 a gear wheel with 24 teeth and six spokes was adopted; this symbolized that the machinery of Rotary was able to perform work in the world. Later it was observed that the wheel was not effective as designed and a key way was added to signify that the wheel represented a worker and not an idler mechanism

o At the 1929 Convention, in keeping with the new blue and gold colour scheme the wheel was designed with these colours. The four blue bands surrounding the wheel represent the four avenues of service.

Stuart concluded his presentation adding a personal observation that the Rotary Wheel represents a humanitarian organization in motion, doing good work in the world. We are all the cogs in this big wheel, which is our entire planet moving continuously round and around. So as the Rotary wheel turns and we spread good will, friendship, peace and hope in a world where conflict and despair are far to common, we need to realize that what goes around comes around.
