The Department of Transport in Limpopohave arrested a student at the LimpopoTraffic College at Manenu for fraud. The Internal Affairs Division of thedepartment carried out the investigation andarrest. A case docket was opened at theMutale SAPS.The student was expelled on 7 July after hepresented a falsified Senior Certificate(Grade 12 certificate). The Department of Transport in Limpopo hasappointed 250 Learner Traffic officials whoare currently at Manenu College doing theirtraining. All of them had to comply withrequirements set out as advertised (medicallyfit, in possession of a valid drivers license, grade 12 and no criminal record). All theshortlisted candidates were called forinterviews and later appointed as per therecommendation of the panels. Thesuccessful applicants were further advisedthat their appointment is subject to screening

and verification of their personal andacademic qualification. This process ofverification took place while the learnerswere busy with their training. It wasdiscovered that 3 of the students were notsupposed to form part of the programmebecause: two submitted a General Educationand Training Certificate, the certificate inquestion is not equivalent to the MatricCertificate and did not reach the specificscores which will render it similar to grade12.They should not have been shortlisted in thefirst place. The third student misrepresented his matriccertificate. He used a certificate belonging tosomeone else and tampered with the namesand ID numbers on the certificate. The tree students were expelled and theSAPS will continue the investigation into thefraud case that was opened against the onestudent.

The Road Traffic Act makes provision forexceeding speed limits in case of anemergency, the use of cell phones whiledriving and expemtion of wearing asafety belt for: “The driver of a fire-fighting vehicle, the driver of a rescuevehicle or ambulance, a traffic officer, amember of the South African PoliceService and a member of a municipalpolice service both as defined in section1 of the South African Police Service Act,

1995 (Act No. 68 of 1995), a member ofthe South African National Defence Forceand any person driving a vehicle whileengaged in civil protection in accordancewith an ordinance made in terms of theCivil Protection Act, 1977 (Act. No 67 of1977): Provided that he or she drives thevehicle concerned with due regard to thesafety of other road users”. Traffic officersare thus not breaking the law while doingany of these.

No parking? No problem!A reader from Burgersfort took thephotograph below and wrote this letter to theTraffic Chief in Burgersfort:“In Burgersfort if there is no parking availableyou can park on the pavements right in frontof the shops to do your shopping, but only ifyou are a traffic cop though. They are allowed to do whatever they want, but expect us to obey the rules? They can

park wherever and however they want, theydrive without safety belts, they are allowed totalk of their phones while driving - they areprobably also allowed to drink and drive? They will pull you over and then have theaudacity to ask for bribe money. No onetakes these traffic cops in Burgersfort seriousbecause of this. To me they are just one bigjoke!” - Janine, Burgersfort

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) thisweek said that they will push for a motion tohave Die Stem sections that has beenincorporated into the national anthem, NkosiSikelelel iAfrica, removed.EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi called for DieStem to be scrapped as it evoked memoriesof apartheid.Organisations such as the Azanian People’sOrganisation and the Pan AfricanistCongress of Azania do not include thesections containing Die Stem in the nationalanthem at their political party functions.Afrikaans singer, Steve Hofmeyr recentlycaused a stir at the Innibos Arts Festival inNelspruit when he sang Die Stem as part ofhis performance. Afterwards in an openletter on his facebook page he clarified thefollowing: “I still sing Nkosi Sikelelel iAfricaand I still stand up when it is being played. Ihave no need to have it replaced with DieStem”. He added that he is both Afrikanerand South African and that he will continueto sing Die Stem. This he did on his tour toAdelaide, Australia in the last week.AfriForum said that Afrikaners are oftenfeeling excluded as a minority group andremoving Die Stem from the nationalanthem will only be a tangible act showingthat they are being excluded. The ANC’s Thami Ka Plaatjie called itunfortunate that individuals want to erodethe gains made in 20 years of democracy. In order to change something like thenational anthem, the EFF will have to rallyup support from both the DA and the ANCas a two thirds majority will be needed toamend the Constitution.Platinum Gazette asked readers what theythink about the EFF’s suggestion forremoval of Die Stem from the nationalanthem and what their opinion is aboutpeople like Steve Hofmeyr singing it.

Mr Putiki Mohlala said: “The national anthemis alright, just keep it like it is. It is alright forSteve to sing Die Stem, just don’t try toreplace Nkosi Sikelelel iAfrica as thenational anthem”.

Ms Enicca Makofane said: “Our nationalanthem must stay like it is with Die Stem.We are one rainbow nation. There is nodiscrimination now. We are all together. No,I don’t think Steve Hofmeyr and others mustsing Die Stem the way he did. It will offendpeople”.

Mr Petrus Molopo, Mr Lucas Ramaila and Mr Pores Mapalakanye said: “Our nationalanthem is joining everyone together. We are all South Africans. We must not take away DieStem at the end. We must forget about this fighting. The national anthem must never be forone group only. We think we must only sing what we have today – people should not singDie Stem like Steve did”.

Mnr. Dion Rantho sê: “Dis reg net soos dievolkslied nou is. Ek het nie ‘n probleem metdie Afrikaans en Engelse dele van Die Stemdaarin nie. Afrikaans en Engels is moseintlik soos ons eerste en tweede tale. DieStem soos Steve dit gesing het is niks.Almal sing liedjies in hulle eie taal”.

Mr Willy Seloane said: “Our national anthemjoins people together. We are all togethernow. Just remember Mandela – he wantedus to be together – white, black, English,Afrikaans, Northern Sothu, it does notmatter. We are Africans. We must betogether and we must love each other. It isfine like Steve sang the song. We mustremember that song. We must rememberthe old things. People are sensitive aboutDie Stem, so people who remember it mustalso take that into account. I have a plan! They must sing Die Stem on Mandela’sbirthday and everyone singing it must givemoney and that must go to the poor!”

Mr Victor Malepe said: “No, they must nottake Die Stem sections away from NkosiSikelelel iAfrica. It is part of our history. Theycan still sing that song (Die Stem), as longas it is not intended to replace our currentnational anthem. Don’t sing it to offendpeople”.

Mnr Sam Mphogo sê: “Daai song (NkosiSikelelel iAfrica) is die song van die nation.Hy moet bly soos hy is. Steve Hofmeyr kanmaar Die Stem sing, ek het nie ‘n probleemnie”.

Mr Thomas Mahlatji said: “The way thenational anthem is, is like our culture. If theytake parts of the national anthem away therewill be discrimination. No, you cannot singDie Stem anymore. You have to let it go”.

Should Die Stem sections of our national

Mr Steve Ramaila said: “The nationalanthem is fine the way it is. As long as thepeople are not inciting each other I cannotsee why we cannot express ourselves. Ithink what Steve Hofmeyer did was to justexpress himself. What we don’t want isracism. Positive criticism is good, but wemust strive to build our nation”.

Mr Edward Lephoi said: “Leave the nationalanthem like it is. It represents our rainbownation. Everyone must feel integrated in ournew South Africa. As much as apartheidwas bad, it is not the fault of all whitepeople. You must live and let live. You mustknow where you come from to know whereyou are going. Singing Die Stem like SteveHofmeyr did? If it is not done in a maliciousway it is part of his heritage – he should beallowed to sing it. If it is not meant to doharm, why not? He was not trying topromote it above our current nationalanthem. It is part of our heritage”.

Mr Lemon Lubhimbi said: “Die Stem in ournational anthem adds value. It representsus all. It unites us. Leave it as it is. Thatsong (Die Stem) is very, very important.Steve Hofmeyr can sing it like he did aslong as he does not want to replace the newanthem”.

Mr Aaron Maredi said: “It must stay the wayit is (Nkosi Sikelelel iAfrica). It is very nicewith that ending. We must be tolerant. Weare used to our current national anthem. DieStem can be sung when it is not intended toreplace the current anthem. If SteveHofmeyr’s intent was to entertain and giveinformation about history, there is nothingwrong with it. Some of us don’t know all ofthat, so in that way it is good what he did”.

Mr Titus Maebela and Mr Fidel Dube said: “If they take those Die Stem parts off, it will besomething else. They must rather add languages such as Xhosa. We are a rainbow nation. If Steve Hofmeyr sang Die Stem simply to have it remembered there is nothing wrong withit”.

Mnr. Rudi Kemp sê: “Ek dink ons volksliedmoet net so bly. Dit is mos nou ‘ndemokratiese land. Dit het betekenis vir onsalmal – ons is mos nou een. Oor Steve? Dismaar Afrikaner wees. Dit is in sy bloed. Virdie ou garde sal Die Stem altyd onthouword”. By hom is Keegan.

Regs: Me. Daphné Rheeders en Mnr.Malan Meijer sê: “Dit moet net so bly. Almalken dit nou al – tot oorsese mense. MetInnibos kan iemand soos Steve Die Stemmaar sing. In daardie gees is dit goed. Hyhet die mense moed gegee dat alles nievergete is nie”.

Mr Tumedi Sekhukhune said: “Our nationalanthem is very important because itincorporates everyone. It makes everyonefeel part of South Africa. South Africaconsists of all kinds of cultural groups andthe message in the song (Die Stem) is notabout apartheid. People can still sing it”.

Did you know?Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika was composed bya Methodist school teacher namedEnoch Sontonga in 1897. Die Stem vanSuid-Afrika is a poem written by CJLangenhoven in 1918 and was set tomusic by Reverend Marthinus Lourensde Villiers in 1921.

Some people actually need nothing, but they can afford everything. So they buy 4 x 4 vehicles just because they can, not necessarily because they need

one. Keeping up with the neighbours are also nice. Most of the time though, a 4 x 2 will do the job just as efficiently. A point in case is the

Chevrolet Trailblazer 2.5 LT with manual six-speed transmission. The so-called budgetoffering in GM South Africa’s large bakkie-based SUV stable costs R398100. Not cheap, but certainly much more affordable than it’s 4 x 4 brethren and good value for money in thismarket segment overall.

So OK, the dash does not look like Tokyo by night and just want to hark back to bakkieorigins, but everything you need is there. Just enough info for a safe comfortable drive, infotainment system, steering wheel controls, manual air conditioner, USB and 3.5mmsockets, etc. Seven seats, four 12 volt power sockets and Isofix anchor points for childseats are all there. What do you need more?

The example from Westvaal Steelpoort we got to drive on Wednesday proved that the120 kW 380Nm Duramax diesel engine was not the most powerful in the Trailblazer range, but certainly no slouch.

Where the vehicle differed most from it’s bakkie heritage is the comfortable ride, goodhandling and low noise, harshness and vibration levels.

The long travel suspension gives a plush ride, but there is almost no wallowing incorners at speed or otherwise. Sound deadening also seemed to be improved for a moreisolated cabin in comparison with previous years’ examples of the vehicle.

Gravel also proved not to be a problem for the Trailblazer and the ride was smooth andcomfortable. The five-link coil suspension at the back just wanted to jump with the unladenvehicle but combined with the independent front suspension setup, an overall superb ridewas the result.

So, you do not live in Timbuktu and do not need a 4x4 and you cannot just buy itbecause you want one. But you do have a lot of kids and a wife with a big suitcase and amother-in-law that goes everywhere with her and you camp/travel/ go to the mall in strangecities a lot. You even drive on gravel quite frequently.

This is the car for you.Do not fret too much about that awful/disgusting/terrible cream interior of Trailblazers

past. It has been replaced with soothing/suitable dark furniture and dash in the new vehicle.Thumbs up!
