On Wednesday this week Mr ChupuStandley Mathabatha was elected as thepremier of the Limpopo provincialgovernment. It is approximately 9 months since MrMathabatha was sworn in as premier of theprovince. After the 7 May elections hismandate was renewed.Upon the acceptance of his position hethanked the ANC for their trust andconfidence. “Your confidence in me hasplaced on my shoulders and those of otherdeployees a necessary burden to workdiligently and tirelessly to change the lives ofour people for the better,” he said.He acknowledged the challenges in servicedelivery saying: “We dare not fail. We arecalled upon to work together to ensure thatwe create job opportunities for the jobless;that we accelerate the provision of houses forthe homeless, above all, deliver water andelectricity to the most needy in the vastfarmlands and far-flung villages of Limpopo.Underpinning our electoral mandat is also aresponsibility to ensure the empowerment ofyoung people through quality education andtraining”.He told the legislature that today 87% ofhouseholds in the province are electrified and86% of households have access to water. The province is caring for 96% of learnersthat are on the School Nutrition Programmeand that the pass rate of 71% is somethingon which to build.

Where to now?

The entrance to the police station in Ohrigstad is under construction. Platinum Gazettetook this photograph last week when the newspaper’s delivery person ventured inside todrop off the station’s newspapers. Being reprimanded by the contractors for walkingthrough their construction site we were quick to ask about a notice where one should goas there is no indication of an alternative entrance and no warning to stay away from theentrance to the Community Service Centre. The answers from the contractor was not infamily friendly language, but for those not visiting the station regularly we could establishthat an alternative entrance is available at the back of the Community Service Centrebuilding.

If you are a rehabilitated addict or stillrecovering from addiction (drugs, alcohol, pornography, prescription medicine, smoking etc) local aftercare and support isnow at hand. This week, the Xtreme Buddies ChristianSupport and Aftercare Ministry forSteelpoort/Burgersfort was launched inSteelpoort in association with RegenerationHouse from Emalahleni (Witbank).Tienie van Wyngaard of the Apostolic FaithMission Church in Steelpoort, who heads thelocal initiative told the newspaper that a largenumber of people go for rehabilitationelsewhere in the country, but when theyreturn home, their environment, friends and‘triggers’ for their addiction are still the sameand can pose a problem if someone wantsto remain ‘clean’.As a result, if the ‘triggers’ prove to be toostrong and if circumstances around a former

Xtreme buddiesnow local

addict’s life do not change, they relapse and itis then very difficult to go again forrehabilitation. In this regard the new initiative will strive to bea support base for former addicts who find itdifficult to resist urges to relapse and give into their addiction again. He said people who need support shouldalready be rehabilitated as the group will notrehabilitate existing addicts. The Xtreme Buddies group will support formeraddicts with Biblical therapy/counselling, druginformation, parent support, arrange foradmission at long term Biblical therapycentres, support addict during their long termprogramme and aftercare outside theprogramme regarding how to start over andimportant life skills.People who need to contact the group cancontact Tienie van Wyngaard at 087 808 5604or 079 836 8719.

He stressed the importance of creatingconditions that are conducive for business tothrive and help the people of Limpopo toparticipate in the country’s mainstreameconomy.“We commit ourselves to jealously guardagainst any tendency that seeks to reversethe gains of the past twenty years of freedomand democracy. At the core of thesetendencies are crime and corruption. Wetherefore implore on all of you to join us inour renewed efforts to fight corruption.Corruption is not only a government problem,it is a societal problem that require all of us toplay our role, be it the ruling party, opposition, business, organised businessand members of the public. On our part asgovernment we will definitely not toleratepeople who use state resources for personalenrichment”.Calling on all parties and individuals involvedin the province administration to work unitedto create a better tomorrow he concluded hisacceptance speech with the followingmessage: “We are recommitting the newadministration to the building of an inclusiveeconomy that create jobs and prioritise ruraldevelopment. In keeping with ourcommitment to accessible primary healthcare to all and quality education, theprovision of adequate human capital and theimprovement of infrastructure in our schoolsand health facilities, will be high on theagenda of this administration”.

Looking for something as tough as nails to carry a load? The Isuzu KB 250 standard 4x2 or Fleetside (the one with larger wheels and tyres and

manual air conditioner) may be the answer to your dreams. The newspaper took the standard derivative from Westvaal Steelpoort for a spin this

week, and although this bakkie is bare bones, we were still mightily impressed.‘Spin’ is maybe not the right word as the trusted diesel engine does not have a turbo,

meaning you may have more time to take in the environment as the vehicle gets up tospeed. 58 kW may not be much, but felt strangely very adequate. Torque also kicks in low,170 Nm is available at 1800 revolutions.

The bakkie is large for all sorts of work, whether you are a contractor, smallbusinessman, farmer or an ordinary guy living in a village who wants to transport all sorts ofstuff, including chickens, other animals or a crop of cabbage. The vehicle certainly gave theimpression it will last.

Not a sports car and it will certainly be an irritation on a steep mountain pass (not foryou, but for the stronger, faster other guys behind you). You will irritate them in comfort asthe bakkie rides extremely well on tar and on gravel, even without a load. But you shouldalso be careful. The bakkie is fitted with side protection bars. That’s it.

No alarm, no immobiliser, no central locking, no ABS, EBD or any other abbreviatedgizmo to save you if you make a mistake and no airbags (and no funny fault codes on thedash). You should also be very content with you or your partner’s company or voice.Infotainment in the vehicle will consist of exactly that if you do not fit your own.

No playing around then, and what is left in the cabin is easy to master. The essentialstuff we all learned about in the K53 and before that.

There are bottle holders in the doors (going to need them in the non air con model). The seating arrangement is good. The driver’s seat adjusts for rake and reach

independently from the small bench next to it. The small bench has two safety belts, a threepoint one for the main passenger on the left and a lap belt for the incidental (preferablysmaller) passenger that can squeeze into the middle.

What was clear from our trip is that General Motors South Africa did not fuzz around orchanged specs just for the sake of changing. They did not break what is not broken. ThisIsuzu bakkie is exactly what it is meant to be. Tough, reliable and unbreakable, and if youare older than a certain age it will almost certainly outlive you and your business if you lookafter it. We want one, we have a ton to move (preferable the one with the air conditioner).

You can get yours from Westvaal Steelpoort for R204 000 (standard) or R221 000(Fleetside).

Mr Gift Kgwedi said: “That is unfortunate. We are moving backwards. It seems onlythe men score points and they forgot all theirpromises about equality. They are doing aman on man”. Ms Avashoni Tshilande, Ms Lehlogonolo Makatelele and Ms Irene Phala said: “They must

add more women to the rank of premier. It can’t be just one from the ANC. Women alsohave a say – we also vote! Let the women lead, it can’t always be men. Let it be 50/50.Women are also strong. Basadi – we have the power!”

Left: Mr FransManyaka said:“There is a goodreason to ratherappoint men. Themen are stronger atthe moment”.

Mr Ally Kobo and Mr Kenneth Masemola said: “They must bebalanced. They must get more female premiers. speakers are notpremiers. It is as if they are giving the speaker positions to thewomen as a consolation prize”.

Mr Vincent Serage and Mr Bafana Mkhawane said: “They mustempower women. They should have gone 50/50. Now Zille isempowering women, but the ANC is not doing the same. It seemsthere is nothing we can do as Zuma has been elected as thePresident again”.

Me.

Mr Ananias Chauke said: “It depends on theway people are voting. It also depends onthe President – who he wants at thatmoment. The names are submitted and onegets chosen. It depends on who has thefavour of the President at that moment, irrespective of gender”.

As politicians were sworn in at Parliament thisweek the Commission for Gender Equality(CGE) vented their disappointment with thenumber of women appointed by the ANC toserve as premiers in the 8 provinces the partywon. Only Sylvia Lucas in the Northern Capewill bring a female presence to this level ofgovernment within the ANC. The ANC hascommitted to appoint female speakers in theprovinces with male premiers. In 2009 the ANCappointed 4 female premiers. The CGE calledon the ANC to reconsider the appointments.Platinum Gazette asked readers what theythink about this gender ratio and If they agreewith the CGE.

Mr David Mokoailane said: “To me it is notgood. They must be 50/50. They are paidthe same when they occupy the sameposition and do the same work for thatmoney. Second in charge as the speakerdoes not make up for losing out on thepremier position”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “They are right toappoint only one woman. The women didnot do enough the last time they wereappointed. That is why their numbers werereduced”.

Mr Steve Mosoma said: “Women are not strong enough to face the men. Especially if thereare problems. They are intimidated by people like Julius Malema. They are not strongenough to stand up for what must be done”. Mr Lawrence Kgoete said: “Women are notstronger than men. It is the right thing to appoint them as speakers”.

Mnr. Pierre Venter sê: “Dis ‘n stappieagteruit. Van 4 na 1 is negatief. Diespeakers maak nie op vir die min premiersnie”.

Ms Surprise Moropane said: “They musthave more women premiers. Theyundermine our rights. They must not givethem second in charge positions. We mustall be equal”.

Mr Isaac Mohlabane and Mr GadsonKomane said: “It depends on the activeparticipation of women in political activities. It is not a step backward. We are nowlooking at people who are active. We cannotchose randomly just for the sake ofequality”. With them is Mpho.

Mr Abram Phako said: “They must be 50/50.They should have been fair. Women havethe qualities to do the job. The premier andthe speaker are not the same. The speakerreports to the premier”. With him are Hopeand Penelope.

Mr Mpho Talane said: “There is no differenceas long as the right people are appointed. Aslong as they can deliver to us. It can be anygender as long as they are suitable for theposition. These things of gender and colourare holding us back. If he or she is good, putthem there, irrespective of their colour orgender”.
