Youth ready forElections

The Limpopo’s National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is planning to worktirelessly in getting youth to be ready for the coming local government elections.

This follows the low recent voters’ registration number which the NYDA believescan be improved.

The independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reports that 53.7 percent of youngpeople aged 20 - 29 in the country have registered to vote in the next coming LocalGovernment elections, and that this year elections has seen an increase of 6 percent ofvoting stations in the country.

The NYDA, together with the IEC and the Department of Home Affairs will host theyouth ID Yourself and Youth Election campaign from 02 March 2011 to 22 April 2011.

The campaign focuses on mobilising youth to:

- Collect their ID’s

- Educate them about the electoral laws

- Create a culture of patriotism and selfless contribution to the country

- Increase youth participation in the democratic process

Through this campaign, the NYDA hopes to reach more than 50 000 young peoplethrough advertisements, public participation programmes, school visits, malls andshopping centre visits, information sharing and visits to tertiary institutions in Limpopo.

The campaign was launched in Mopani District Municipality, Ba-PhalaborwaMunicipality (Marble Hall) earlier this week.

The Provincial Government also announced that Mr Shonisani (Ashifashaba)Muleya will be an Ambassador of the Youth Voter Mobilisation Programme.

Steelpport and Burgersfort will greatlybenefit form a R4.9 thousand million capitalinvestment through the opening anddevelopment of the Magareng Chrome Mineand the expansion of the Lion FerrochromeSmelter.

Opening the mine last week, LimpopoPremier, Cassel Mathale, said the mine andthe smelter will contribute to towards the jobcreation drive that the government hascommitted to forge ahead with, in order toreduce joblessness and poverty among thepeople. Mathale stressed that, “the openingof this mine could not have come at the righttime than when we are all out mobilising thebusiness community to take the frontlineposition in actualising our resolve to createjob opportunities for our people.”

The construction of the smelter isexpected to be completed in 2013 and willcreate 1000 permanent jobs and a further 1800 during the construction phase. Theexpansion of the chrome smelter is thebiggest in the world and will produce360,000 tonnes of chrome per annum.Meanwhile the Magareng mine will create600 jobs once it is in full scale operation.

During the opening of the mine XstrataAlloys’ Chief Executive, Peet Nienaber, saidmore than 2 200 indirect jobs will be createdthrough the procurement of services andproducts from local suppliers. Xstratacommitted to procuring 80 percent of itsproducts and services from local suppliersas way of investing in the local economy andthe upliftment of the living conditions of thelocal communities. The expansion of thesmelter will utilise Xstrata’s proprietaryenergy-efficient Premus technology thatconsumes approximately a third lesselectricity than other available smeltingtechnologies.

Premier Mathale emphasised that themines must be the main contributors to thecourse of environmental protection. “It isimportant that mining operations must notdisrupt farming operations by damaging theland, or polluting water, which is a scarceresource in our province. We are also urging

Premier Mathaleopens Magareng Mine

- stresses mines’ role injob creation

the mines to play an active role in greeningour province,” the premier said.

He called on the mines to work closelywith the communities to ensure that thecommunities also share the wealth createdby minerals under their ground.

Meanwhile, Merafe Resources, Xstrata’sjoint venture partner at Lion Ferrochrome, isactively encouraging the government toimpose restrictions on the export of rawchrome ore from South Africa from this year.

Merafe, which posted a R278,7-millionreturn to profit in the year to December 31,shares in 20,5% of the earnings beforeinterest, taxation, depreciation andamortisation of the Xstrata-Merafe ChromeVenture, which has a capacity to produce1,98-million tonnes of ferrochrome a year.

Merafe Chief Eexecutive Officer, StuartElliot, told Mining Weekly says that chromeis high on the agenda of the government’s2011 priorities to adopt beneficiation as astrategy in order to ensure that South Africareaps the benefit of its mineral endowment.

Three million tons of unbeneficiated rawchrome ore left South Africa for China in2010. “We continue to lobby DMR as well asTreasury to restrict chrome ore that isexported without being beneficiated,” Elliotsays. “As long as everyone comes to theparty, and they are not severely prejudiced,we believe that we can find a solution that isamicable to everyone,” Elliot says. The threemillion tons a raw chrome ore that wasexported from South Africa last year issufficient to produce a million tons offerrochrome.

“The most important aspect is that if wecontinue to export ore, South Africanferrochrome producers are going to comeunder pressure from a cost point of view andwe’re going to lose jobs,” is Merafe’s view, linking beneficiation and job creation. “Youcan’t look at them in isolation,” Elliot says.

‘Benefication equals jobs’

Getting less worth for your moneyA clever way manufacturers are cutting costsis by reducing the size or content of theirproduct with a few grams or milliliters, butkeeping the price the same.An example of this includes All Gold TomatoSauce that used to be 750g and is now only700g. Cadbury slabs containing moreexpensive ingredients such as nuts have beenshrunk to 90g from 100g. A tin of condensedmilk used to weigh 397g, but these days areonly available in 385g. The list of productsgoes on to include products such as Lux soapand even Coca-Cola cans. This way of saving from the manufacturers’side is sometimes making life difficult for thosepreparing recipes. Many fudge recipesrequires a 397g tin of condensed milk. Do younow have to buy two tins or take the risk ofadding less of the key ingredient to the recipe? The same goes for cakes requiring 200g ofwhole nut chocolate. Do you now buy a 180gslab and a 90g (which will make your cakemuch more expensive)? The trend to shrink the packaging is howevernot local, it is happening all over the world. An article printed in the renowned USconsumer publication, Consumer Reportstackled this issue. The writer comments: “Noone likes a price hike, but what riles readersare the ways manufacturers hide theirhandiwork: indenting the bottom of containers(a favourite trick among peanut butterprocessors), making plastic wraps thinner, orwhipping ice cream so that you pay for airinstead of ingredients”.Canadian Consumer watchdog, EdgarDworsky has been quoted saying: “It’s asneaky way to pass on a price increase toconsumers because the product package iseither identical to what it was before or virtuallyidentical, so the consumers think they’rebuying the same product, but they’re not. You’re getting less...and if you’re paying thesame price and you’re getting less, that’s a bitof a rip-off”.We asked readers how they experienced thisphenomenon and if they would have preferreda slight increase in price to a slight decreasein product?

Ms Saena Marogaand Ms Maria Motausaid: “They mustreduce the price whenthey reduce thecontent. They mustadvertise that theproduct is now a newsize otherwise theyare stealing from us”.

Regs: Me. By hulle isSolaine.

Me.

Ms Francinah Maseta said: “They must keepit the same and I’ll pay a normal increase. Idon’t like the changes”. With her is Blessing.

Ms Bonni McKinley said: “We have no choice. We are forced to accept what they give us.Rather keep it the same size with a smallincrease when needed. I don’t like change, Ijust feel cheated”. With her is Lily-Rose.

Mr Satiel Serite said: “The price must belower because the contents are not there. Itis no good. Full amount or grams otherwisethey rob the consumer”.

Ms Dikeledi Tebele said: “I’ve found they dothat and I feel cheated. Food is too expensiveto just get less”.

Ms Angelina Ndebele said: “They arecheating us. We are paying and will ratherpay more but not get less. I have found thatwhen I get home I don’t have enough ofsomething for a recipe because of this”.

Mnr.

Right: Ms Dineo Mathibeli said: “I think it isfine. I’ll buy more for recipes with specificamounts”.

Mnr. Werner Roberts sê: “Hulle moet eers diepubliek se opinie kry voor hulle so iets doen.As hulle dit nie doen nie is dit ‘n bietjieonregverder as hulle nie adverteer dat dieproduk nou kleiner of minder is nie. Hullemoenie net kleiner maak nie. ‘n Mens isgewoond aan ‘n spesifieke grootte en vat netvan die rak sonder om elke keer na die gramof milliliter te kyk. Hulle buit die verbruiker uiten is oneties”.

Regs: Me. Kasey de Faria sê: “Die verbruikerword ingedoen, hoe moet jy kop bo waterhou? Hulle waarsku nie die verbruiker nie endaar is kort-kort prysstygings. Ek voel baiekeer so magteloos want wat kan jy noueintlik doen? Hulle moet sê deuradvertensies dat dis nou kleiner maardieselfde gehalte”.
