Going, going, gone over!

A lack of obedience to road rules is a major prob-lem in Burgersfort.

Motorists, many of them driving small taxis, are simply not following the rules and in turn endangering other motorists and their passengers’ lives.

This one was photographed on Wednesday af-ternoon simply skipping the queue at the right turn lane to drive over the red light at Tubatse Crossing Mall. This driver was photographed in the act, but many are doing it and simply get away.

Some clean business...Easter was a busy time at many places and local businesses were no different. Last week Friday, some of Kalkfontein’s local entrepreneurs were ready for work at their car wash.

A family from Pretoria is in mourning after a mother (43) and her 11-year old son died on Saturday last week during an accident caused by a tired driver.

They were on their way back from visiting family when the boy, Hendro complained of motion sickness and nausea in the Beet-gekraal area along the R37.

Mr Martin de Beer told media this week that he pulled off the road onto the gravel to allow his son Hendro to switch seats with his wife. According the De Beer a Nissan Navara then came past their vehicle on the left and hit both his wife and son. The driver of the bakkie apparently lost control of his vehicle.

The impact of the crash sent Hendro fl ying through the air while pressing Petro against the vehicle door. The impact bend the door backwards.

De Beer said that his wife was conscious and asked about their son. He found Hendro about 20m from the vehicle and it was clear that he died on impact. “He was already blue in his face,” he explained. He said that he returned to his wife to tell her that their son

was gone”. Petro was airlifted to Life Midmed Hos-

pital in Middelburg where X-rays showed multiple fractures amongst her injuries.

On Sunday morning doctors operated on her, but after the operation she had trouble breathing and her lungs collapsed before she sadly also passed away.

De Beer said that the driver of the bakkie immediately got out of his vehicle after the accident saying that he fell asleep behind the wheel. He had allegedly just fi nished a 14-hour shift and was heading home.

“I know it was an accident. He did not do this on purpose. The man was just trying to put bread on his family’s table. It is not his fault,” De Beer said.

De Beer will remember his son as a born leader with a loving personality. His wife was known for her caring character. She always wanted to ensure that everyone around her was doing allright.

The SAPS has opened a case of culpible homicide. A combined memorial services is planned for today in Waverley, Pretoria.

Mother and son hit in accident

Alleged sleepy driver lost control

A team of friendly road workers was this week photographed repairing some of the major holes in the road connecting the R37 to Lydenburg with Steelpoort. This notori-ous road is known for its bad sections and in places urgently needs a total rebuild.

4 NEWS 1 APRIL 2016

Tonteldoos transformed

The sleepy little village of Tonteldoos became an unrecognizable hive of activity last Saturday with the annual Scottish Highlands Festival.

The day’s attendance surpassed all pre-vious years and visitors to the festival could enjoy activities ranging from a swordsmanship

display, mass and individual band performances, dog performances, dancing, Friesian Pas de Deux and many more.

Stalls at the festival ensured that visitors were not left hungry, thirsty or at a lack of things to see (and buy).

The day’s fashion trend was tartan and almost everyone (including the ani-mals) wore it. The sunny weather also made hats a popular accessory. A variety of crafts were on display and the beer garden was busy throughout the day. Crowds were everywhere with cell phones and cameras at the ready to capture the action.

A second take

Chevrolet Orlando

The big ‘madala’ in the editor’s family turned 80 in March and as a result, a party in the lowveld was in order during Easter weekend.

So, we (grandad’s daughter, the editor and one of grandad’s grown-up grandchil-dren) travelled from Middelburg to Marloth to attend the festival and we stayed over one night. The women in the family (through Whatsapp) were in charge of the packing.

The vehicle of choice (the editor’s large Jeep) turned out to be problematic space-wise. A trailer had to be hitched.

Beware the women. Get yourself a Chev-rolet Orlando.

Space, comfort and safety are what this vehicle is all about. And you should also not be in a hurry. This is no sports car.

The Orlando sports General Motors’s 1.8 litre ecoTech engine, which delivers 104 kW at 6200 rpm, and torque of 176 Nm at 3800 rpm. Which performs surprisingly well in the large vehicle, and even let the handling feel nimble. We did not have the opportunity to load all seven seats (yes, seven, but then you have practically no space for luggage other than on your lap). We suspect that the vehicle will turn from nimble and peppy when empty to well, nimble and slouchy when loaded. Fold down all the rear seats or just the back or middle row individually and you have large to massive luggage space – no trailer required.

The car has a huge engine bay and we suspect that a larger mill can easily fi t in there.

The car’s suspension is one of the best for comfort we have driven so far. Road noise, harshness and vibration are well contained and hundreds of kilometres can be travelled in the superbly comfortable

seats without getting tired. Shifting gears of the manual transmission is also slick (but frequent with the 1.8 l power plant).

Creature comforts are what you expect. The vehicle is well equipped with MyLink infotainment, Bluetooth, USB and 3.5 mm connectors, CD player, cruise control and an air conditioner that works adequately.

The car has a fi ve star NCAP safety rating and standard features include airbags ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and hydraulic brake assist. If your family members are still small, the ISOFIX system will make anchoring child seats a breeze.

In all, the Orlando is a hidden gem, will drive extremely well on gravel roads (although it is a bit low) and money will be well spent if you put down your R321 200 at Westvaal Steelpoort. Their telephone num-ber is 013 230 9230.

Juniors by golf kliniek
