GIVING TREE
Dear Parishioner, Our annual Advent Giving Tree Project—a St. Cletus tradition—will begin next weekend, November 17 and 18. We will be offering our parish families an opportunity to share with those less fortunate…those who would not have a very merry Christmas without your generosity. Our trees will be filled with names of individuals in need from our sharing parish, St. Agatha’s, and from our community. As in the past, we ask you to purchase gifts for the person named on the PURPLE tag you remove from the tree. Then, on the weekend of December 8-9, please bring your gifts to Church. We also ask you to remember your special person(s) in your family’s prayers throughout this holy season. Last year our parish made Christmas brighter for more than 1,800 people. We will again have a tree with RED food basket tags. These tags will have a suggested list for the contents of a CHRISTMAS SEASON FOOD BASKET for the families using our Food Pantry and others struggling in our community. Please read the instructions listed on these “basket tags.” On Sunday, December 16, FOOD BASKETS will be accepted in Morrissey Hall in the morning and distributed from there in the afternoon. We invite you to stop in the narthex next weekend to take a tag or two from one of the Giving Trees. We are thankful for your generosity in purchasing many gifts for the individual(s) you choose. We are asking this year, for some of you to consider taking an additional tag or two, and perhaps buying fewer gifts for each name you pick. Thank you! Your generosity will provide hope and make a difference in someone’s life. God bless you on your Advent Journey! The Giving Tree Committee Answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the parish website: www.stcletusparish.com/socialconcerns.
For further details you can also contact: Mary Beth, (708) 215-5418, [email protected] or Maureen (708) 839-0345

THE CHRISTIFIDELIS AWARD Last Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Holy Name Cathedral, representatives from all the parishes in the six vicariates of the Archdiocese of Chicago gathered for a very special occasion. Cardinal George and the Bishop-Vicars presented the Christifidelis Award to various lay people in recognition of their outstanding ministry in the Church. Each Chicago pastor is invited to nominate a parishioner or a parish couple who have been involved and worked intensively for the good of God’s people. This year, St Cletus Parish was pleased to present Denise and Jon Parlier for the Christifidelis Award. For many years, Denise worked at the school as Administrative Assistant. Once she retired, she intensified her volunteer work at the parish along with her husband Jon. They volunteer at the Food Pantry, at the Food Depository, the Giving Tree, as money counters, St. Vincent De Paul Society, and Denise volunteers at the school office several times a month. They are enthusiastic in their involvement in the parish and generous with their time, talents and treasures. Pictured with Denise and Jon is Fr. Edgar who was
present for their well deserved award. Our entire St Cletus Faith Community joins in congratulating Denise and Jon Parlier on this very special honor: the 2012 Christifidelis Award.

“TURKEY BUCKS” This month when you do your grocery shopping at the Jewel store across the street from St. Cletus, please remember to tell your cashier that you would like to help St. Cletus Food Pantry by purchasing $1, $5, or $10 in Jewel “Turkey Bucks.” Your thoughtful donation will help bring a traditional holiday dinner to a family in our community that otherwise may have gone without. Thank you! FOOD PANTRY UPDATE
THANK YOU to all who helped provide our pantry with food or financial assistance for the November food distribution, including our faithful parishioners and friends in the community. Also, a heartfelt word of appreciation to the volunteers who sorted the donations, stocked the shelves, packed the bags, and helped us distribute them. By working together, we were prepared to help 325 families at our November 9 distribution with supplemental groceries.
God bless you and your families! Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns

An Unbroken Chain of Faith by Damon Owens “Faith is a personal act—the free response of the human person to the initiative of God who reveals himself. But faith is not an isolated act. No one can believe alone, just as no one can live alone. You have not given yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. The believer has received faith from others and should hand it on to others. Our love for Jesus and for our neighbor impels us to speak to others about our faith. Each believer is thus a link in the great chain of believers.” For most of my life, I thought my granddaddy was the pastor of the Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church in Asheville, NC. I grew up hearing stories of Rev. Owens from my dad: How he prayed for days in his “prayer closet,” interceding for someone, or how he traveled out to the “country,” preaching to those far-flung believers in the (even more) rural North Carolina backwoods. I still hear him pleading for God’s blessing and protection over us in those last few minutes of every childhood visit. I can still recall what it felt like, all dressed up before dawn, kneeling with my sisters in his living room for what seemed like forever. My granddaddy prayed with intensity, conviction, and joy. We may have doubted that his prayers would ever end, but we never doubted that this man loved Jesus Christ. I have only recently come to realize the impact of his faith on me. In 2002 when I was discerning going into apostolic work full-time, one of my father’s most encouraging observation was that I would be following in the footsteps of “Daddy.” It turns out my granddaddy wasn’t a pastor but an itinerant preacher. A gardener formed in the faith of his father, he got a call from God to “go and teach.” And he did, for 50 years. ACTION STEP Make a list of critical links in your chain of faith. Who was a vital part of your faith formation—and on whose list might you be found? Offer your own prayer of thanksgiving for those who gave you your spiritual heritage, and ask for protection for those God has entrusted into your care.
