From the DeanTo the Class of 2011,

I expect that many of you thought tonight would never arrive, as you both dread and anticipate the end of your college years, certainly one of the most exciting times of your life. Now you stand at the top of a diving plat-form, ready to plunge into the fabled “real world” of which we often speak.

As you and your parents and friends reflect on the last four years, you are no doubt wondering how well you’re prepared for what lies ahead. If we consider your Dodge College experience, I think you will find many rea-sons to be confident.

Through your years here you have had the opportunity to explore and learn from the best of the past, in discipline-specific survey and history

courses, and to anticipate and prepare for the probable future as we have tried out new technologies and discussed industry trends. You have been called upon to create, collaborate, and produce work that show-cases your skills and talents, sharpening those skills with each succeeding year. You have, I hope, learned the value of teamwork and had the opportunity to offer your strengths as both a follower and a leader. And, you have been immersed in a creative hothouse—surrounded by mentors and peers who, like you, strive to live life to the fullest in the world of the film and media arts.

If you have taken advantage of what Dodge College has to offer, you are ready. What comes next is up to you. But allow me to remind you that even as you head off into your future, you are not alone. Not only do you carry with you the foundation of your Dodge College education, but we promise you the ongoing support of your Dodge College family. The friendships and connections you have made here can last a life-time, and are yours to call on when you need advice, inspiration, or simply a listening ear.

We look forward to hearing about your future challenges and success. Please keep in touch.

Best,

Bob BassettTwyla Reed Martin, Dean’s Chair in Film and Media Arts

About the ShowThe Cecil Awards has become one of Dodge College’s biggest nights. It is a night when we all take a look back at what the students have created with the help, inspiration and guidance of the faculty. Each year students work is honored with this prestigious event. A few years ago, Jessica Zipser Whitney, a Chapman University alumna, and now principle of ZOe Productions, took on the Cecil Awards Show as her Senior Project. She turned what had been a simple reading of awards into a glamorous event held in Memorial Hall. Since then the awards show has moved to the Folino Theater and expanded into the event that it is today. The students, for the students, put on the Cecil Awards.

This year’s show has been in the works since September, 2010 and will truly be a Night Among The Stars, led by executive producers, Cameron Wohlschlaeger, Courtney Teller, Thomas Price, Zach Mason and Genna Bromley, created with the help of many talented and dedicated students, under the advise-ment of Ray Roschmann and with the support of corporate sponsors, faculty, staff, parents, friends and many other members of the Dodge family. The 2011 Cecil Team has been working hard all semester to create an annual event that will keep students motivated and excited by celebrating the quality of their work with their friends and family.

Tonight’s HostsSamantha Cortese

Samantha is a Senior Television Broadcast Journalism major at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. She is the Executive Producer and head of Media Relations at Chapman’s first and only weekly newscast, Chapman News.

With her experience from Chapman News, Samantha scored her first news job at KPSP Local 2 in Palm Springs and is currently working there as a part-time producer. She hopes to someday join the morning show at KTLA. When she isn’t fully immersed in the news, Samantha is a cheerleader for Chapman University.

Samantha has hosted events for her old sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, at Cal State Fullerton, and is not shy in front of a crowd. She is so thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to host the 2011 Cecil Awards. She can’t go without saying “thank you” to the select three Chapman Newsies that made late nights not having a social life wonderful and to her family for her outgoing genes and dealing with her need to be in the spotlight.

Rob Steinhauser

Rob Steinhauser is pumped to host this year’s Cecil Awards. Hailing all the way from Parker, Colorado, you may recognize him from Chapman productions such as American Celebration, Psycho Beach Party, School for Scandal, the Fall Dance Concert, Works in Progress, Concert Intime, Kate So Far, and various student films. Outside of Chapman, he completed his first professional pilot this last year, Upstairs, in addition to his first feature film as Kyle “Pledge” Motes in The Newest Pledge—a film produced and directed by Chapman students and alumni.

Rob is a zealous member of Chapman’s Black Student Union and asserts Unity through the Diversity of Peoples, Experiences, and Ideas. However, he is most proud to graduate this year in the inaugural class of 2011 BFA Screen Acting Majors and he will be the first with a Minor in Dance both at Chapman and in the world. “I would not be here without all my mistakes, for I am now better because of their lessons. Nor would I be here without the love and support of my teachers, mentors, friends and family. To the Chapman Faculty, Ellie, Sigung, Taylor, Mom, Dad, Cassie, Lexie, Nana, Baba, Grandma, Grandpa, Sharon, and all the rest (you know who you are): Maybe one day I can live up to my true potential, but for now thanks for loving and believing in who I am today. Yours Forever and Always, Robert William Steinhauser.

Bob Einstein Bob Einstein

Born in Los Angeles, California, Bob Einstein is the son of actress Thelma Leeds and radio comedian Harry “Parkyakarkus” Einstein. Bob’s older brother Clifford is an advertising executive, and his younger brother Albert is better known as Albert Brooks. One of Einstein’s earliest jobs was writing for The Smothers Brothers Comedy, for which he and the other writers (including Rob Reiner and Steve Martin) earned an Emmy. After CBS cancelled the show, Einstein continued to make guest appearances on television, and was seen regularly on The Steve Allen Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and Late Night with David Letterman, among many others.

By the early 1970s, Einstein’s career as a writer and producer was in full swing with credits including The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour, and Van Dyke and Company, for which he won his second Emmy. Just for fun, he would occasionally appear on these shows as a performer. His success in television continued into the 1980s with Bizarre and Super Dave, for which he won a CableACE award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

Einstein’s film appearances have been as eclectic as the rest of his career. In 1972, he had a small role in Get to Know Your Rabbit and made his film debut as a writer/director with Another Nice Mess. In 1981, he was seen in Albert Brooks’ film Modern Romance. He also acted in Harry Shearer’s film Teddy Bears’ Picnic and was seen in the documentary Smothered: The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Most recently, he appeared as FBI agent Robert Caldwell in Ocean’s 13.

Einstein has a busy career as a character actor as well, with a list of TV credits including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Crank Yankers.

The Einstein Award continues to recognize a talented student who also helps others realize their projects – a person who embodies the kind of collaboration we encourage, a person who unselfishly commits his or her time to helping others realize their dreams.

The idea behind Hint is simple: pure water, nature’s original refreshment, accented with a hint of natural flavor. No sugar, no artificial sweeteners: Hint is a refreshing alternative to sodas, juice and other sweetened drinks and it tastes great. And comes in 10 exciting flavors like: mango-grapefruit, lime, pear, raspberry-lime, and even cucumber. Sound good? It tastes even better. Try Hint tonight. Hint wishes you excellent health and success to all the Dodge College

Even active people need a boost once in a while. So the AriZona Beverage Company teamed up with TWINLAB to create a new line of enhanced waters. Each brightly colored bottle is filled with vitamins and antioxidents that help increase the rate of fluid replacement while balancing nutrient absorption in the body. But enough with the geek-speak. The benefits of Rescue Water are defined in simple terms with each refreshing flavor: Energy (Lemon-Lime), Immunity (Pomegranate Punch), Detox (Orange Citrus’ blend) and Relax (Berry Blend). And with only 25 calories per 8-ounce serving, there’s no reason not to be rescued.
