(MS) -- Everyone has at least one -- the house on the street that lights up in splendor around the holiday season. Decorations are in abundance both indoors and out, and just seeing the house brings on a smile. But as beautiful as it might be, that home may also be a safety risk if the decora-tor hasn’t followed precau-tions like these offered by CSA Group:

Creativity is key but not at the cost of safety -- Let your in-ner designer shine, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights and electronic decorations. Be sure to turn off the electric-

Electrical Safety Tips For Holiday Decorating

ity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring, and never run an electrical cord through a doorway or under a carpet indoors.

Fakes are no laughing mat-ter -- Your next door neighbor dressed up as Santa is funny. Counterfeit decorations are not so funny. Look for the mark from an accredited certifi ca-tion organization, such as CSA Group, on animated displays, light strings and extension cords. Ensure decorations are marked and certifi ed for out-door use and follow the manu-facturer’s instructions.

Keep the mood light but not fi ery -- Choose fl ame-resistant decorations and don’t place open fl ames or candles near fl ammable materials, such as wreathes, trees or paper deco-rations. Never nail or tack lighting strings to a wall, as this may damage insulation and create a shock or fi re hazard. Use insulated fasteners rather

than metal nails or tacks that could damage wiring to hold light strings in place.

Cozy up -- Keep warm by the fi replace but be sure your gas appliances are in good working order. If the pilot light or fl ame goes out, turn the gas off and wait fi ve minutes or longer (see the manufacturer’s instruc-tions) before attempting to re-light. Be alert for unusual odors

or fl ames when your gas fi re-place is on, often indicating that the fi replace is not oper-ating properly. In such cases, contact your dealer or licensed technician for servicing.

Overload on food, not watts -- Don’t overload extension cords. Use heavy duty exten-sion cords for high wattage decorations and large elec-tronically-animated displays.

Call Now For Fall Savings!

Although poinsettias are most often associated with the holiday season, they are actually tropical plants. In spite of their origins, poin-settias can thrive during the holiday season and even last long after the holidays have come and gone.

Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Central Amer-ica. Aztecs called the plant cuetlaxochitl. The fl owering plant was fi rst introduced to the United States by Joel Poinsett, the U.S. ambas-sador to Mexico, and was subsequently renamed the poinsettia. The fl owers of the poinsettia are actually the yellow blooms at the middle of the bright red or white bracts that form on the plant. Perhaps due to the bright red of the bracts, the plant quickly became a popular Christmas plant.

It’s important to note that poinsettias grow in a warm climate and therefore must be kept in tropical condi-tions to ensure the plant’s health. Furthermore, poin-settias bloom in response to shortening daylight hours. That means they will need ample darkness each night in order to simulate the dark nights of short, winter days.

The Basics Of Poinsettia Plant Care

To achieve this, you may need to put the plant into a dark closet for 12 to 14 hours each night.

During the day, the plant should be in a sunny win-dow where it will have ac-cess to bright light. The more light the better. Keep the soil evenly moist. Mist-ing the plant will help it to retain some humidity. Also, fi ll the overfl ow saucer on

your fl ower pot with grav-el to allow water seeping through the pot to evaporate from the gravel. Hot tem-peratures indoors combined with high humidity will help the plant to thrive. Even one day without adequate mois-ture can cause the leaves to drop. Furthermore, decreas-ing temperatures can cause leaves to fall off. The goal is to keep the indoor tempera-ture consistent.

While many poinsettia plants are discarded after the holiday season, these plants can actually be cut back and saved for next season. Trimming back any remaining leaves and con-tinuing to care for the plant by keeping it moist can help. To force the blooms next season, start reduc-ing the plant’s exposure to sunlight in mid-September to October. Again, this will

mean removing the plant to an area that is shrouded in complete darkness. Even streetlights or indoor light-ing can affect blooming. If the plant does not begin to turn color before the holi-day season, you may need to purchase a new plant and try again next year.

(MS) -- The holiday count-down is on and it’s time to get your house razzle-daz-zle ready. But before you do, make sure to check that your lights and decorations are still in good working order after a year in stor-age. Not only can old de-cor look worn out, but it also can put you and your family at risk -- which is the last thing anyone wants at this joyous time of year.

CSA Group, a leader in public safety testing and certifi cation, offers these tips to help you stay safe this holiday:

* Carefully inspect light strings each year. Discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. Inspect for storage damage from moisture or rodents.

* Turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wir-ing. Unplug light strings before replacing bulbs and check to ensure re-placement bulbs match the voltage and wattage of the original. To avoid a shock from damaged wires, use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold light strings in place.

* Make decorating a fam-ily activity by planning this year’s theme with the kids, but don’t let children or pets play with light strings.

* Keep electrical con-nectors for outdoor lights above ground, out of wa-ter and away from metal gutters. Connect outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit inter-rupters (GFCI). These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing

Keep The Traditions, But Ditch The Worn-Out Decor

ground leakage and cutting electrical power.

* Use heavy duty extension cords for high wattage dec-orations and large electron-

ically-animated displays, and don’t overload exten-sion cords.

If you need to purchase new lights, look for a certifi ca-

tion mark to ensure they are certifi ed by an organi-zation such as CSA Group.

And remember: outdoor holiday lights are made for seasonal use only; ex-tended exposure to the ele-ments can lead to damage. So when the holidays are over, take down the festive decorations and place them back in their original pack-aging for next year.

Several inches of snow piled up outdoors may seem like paradise to chil-dren eager for a day off from school and a chance to spend all day outside building a snowman. But adults typically have dif-ferent views on snow that have more to do with shoveling than sledding.

Though nothing can make removing snow fun for many homeowners, those with their minds on the en-vironment might be glad to learn there are some eco-conscious ways to remove all of that white stuff.

While it might not be glam-orous, human-powered

Green Ways To Remove Snow

snow removal remains the best method of removing snow safely with the least impact to the environment. A shovel and broom may not be the fastest ways to clear driveways and walkways, but they have little im-

pact on the environment. Shoveling produces no toxic side effects that can damage plants, animals and even young children. In ad-dition, shoveling snow is an ideal winter exercise, work-ing most areas of the body

while providing a cardio-vascular workout.

There are several different snow shovels on the market. Ergonomically designed shovels will help reduce in-jury to the back and shoul-ders and could make each pass through the snow more effi cient. Another option is snow-plow style aluminum shovels that enable shovel-ers to plow the snow toward the lawn, saving them the effort of lifting and tossing snow.

Standard shoveling may be easier than using a me-chanical blower, especially when the snowfall was not signifi cant. However, snow blowers may be more ef-fective after a particularly heavy or thick snow. Elec-tric snow blowers are better environmentally than gas-powered blowers. If you have solar panels, then no additional energy is needed to fuel the electric blower. However, electric blowers are not as powerful as those powered by gas. If you must purchase a gas blower, opt for one that runs on diesel fuel. This way you can use a more eco-friendly alterna-tive bio-diesel, such as dis-carded cooking oil, to fuel the snow blower.

When snowfall is not signif-icant, you may not need to shovel at all. Abrasive mate-

rials like wood ash and sand can make walkways less slick. Furthermore, dark ash will absorb the sun’s rays and help to melt the snow faster. Use sand sparingly because it can clog storm drains and add to excess silt in streams and rivers. Other products can be used for traction, including a prod-uct called EcoTraction(R) which uses hydrothermal volcanic mineral to provide traction.

If you are like the many who rely on a salt product to de-ice, choose a less harm-ful alternative. Salt runoff can damage plants and ir-ritate pet paws, so choose a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer instead. Though a calcium magnesium acetate de-icer is not necessarily ideal for the environment, such products are more eco-friendly than salt-based products.

Homeowners who live in ar-eas that get heavy snowfall may want to hire a snow re-moval company. One truck plowing a neighborhood is better for the environment than several homeowners fi ring up individual snow blowers. Otherwise, think about investing in a radi-ant heating system that can be built into driveways. The warm driveway will melt away ice and snow. This relies on electricity, which is not as harmful to the en-vironment if that electric-ity comes by way of solar power.

Snow removal is a chore few look forward to. But eco-conscious homeowners should know that there are environmentally friendly ways to remove snow.

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Un-

Tree Lighting Tipstangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but light-ing a tree doesn’t have to

be a chore when you follow some tips from the profes-sionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t pro-duce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year af-ter year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights

to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimen-sion. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to in-crease visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same watt-age of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-to-date, creat-ing a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

* Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the

Prep work important before paintingwalls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

* Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the mold-ing and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

* Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark col-ors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

* Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint be-fore using it. In addition, even

if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a po-tentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been re-moved from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

* Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more pro-fessional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a pro-fessional painter.

Painting can be an inexpen-sive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not re-quire the technical know-how of more large-scale home im-provement projects, it still re-quires some prep work and at-tention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

(MS) -- Turn old or dis-carded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcy-cling” -- high-end “recy-cling” that reduces trash at landfi lls by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Woodcraft offers the follow-ing ideas and products to get you started.

Upcycling Projects

* Family furniture: Save chairs, tables, and other fur-niture passed down through the generations by doing repairs, if needed, and stain-ing/painting to suit your cur-rent decor.

* Other furniture or “yard sale fi nds”: These also can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint

Upcycling: Transforming The ‘Old’ Into A Better ‘New’or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to trans-formation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

* Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos.

* Cabinets: Change the look of your kitchen, bathroom or workshop with a new color for your cabinets and new handles and pulls.

Helpful Products

“Woodcraft offers many products -- including profes-

sional advice -- that can make upcycling projects easy and successful,” product manager Kent Harpool said. “A few products are listed here, but our retail store owners and salespeople, customer ser-vice staff and tech experts are available to help you select from Woodcraft’s extensive line of tools and supplies, as well as understand how to use the products. We know wood and how to work with it, re-pair it and transform it. Visit a store near you, or give us a call -- let us help you.”

* Repair: Furniture that has been around awhile may need repair. For weak chair joints, drill a hole, inject Briwax ChaiRx, and wait for it to swell the joints for a strong bond. For other repairs, Tite-bond I, II or III and other glues will work.

* Transition: Changing the use and form of wood pieces will involve varied tasks.

For projects that involve disas-sembly of fur-niture or doors, followed by reassembly of some pieces into a new creation, the Kreg Jig(R) K4 Master Sys-tem offers quick joinery -- strong p o c k e t - h o l e joints.

Stanley Chair Braces are designed for cor-ner reinforcement on chairs, tables, chests, and more for quick, easy construction and repairs.

* Color: Once you have se-lected and/or repaired a piece of old furniture or created a new piece from an existing one, determine where your upcycled piece will “live,” which color or colors will look best there, and which type of paint or fi nish will achieve the desired effect.

Use Restor-A-Finish(R) to “uncover” the original fi nish on an heirloom or other old piece of furniture. Available in six colors plus neutral, it revives the wood fi nish’s lus-ter while blending out minor scratches and blemishes.

To change or refurbish the color, the three products list-ed below are easy to use. In addition, surface prep for fur-

niture and cabinets requires only cleaning and light sand-ing.

For a beautiful hand rubbed wood fi nish look, choose General Finishes Gel Stain and Topcoats. Available in 12 shades, including the popular Java, these urethane stains and topcoats are easy to use: simply wipe on with a rag and wipe off the excess. To pro-tect the gel stain, especially for heavy-use surfaces such as tabletops, General Finishes offers three options: Gel Satin Top Coat, PolyAcrylic Top Coat or High Performance Top Coat.

General Finishes Water Based Milk Paints and Glaze Effects offer a wide range of color possibilities. Use one of the 20 premixed acrylic Milk Paint colors, such as Tuscan

red, or combine two colors (using a topcoat between applications). To create eye-catching decorative fi nishes such as distressing, antiqu-ing, marble effects, shabby chic, and more, choose one of the six translucent glaze effects to go with any water-based stain or paint.

Old-Fashioned Milk Paint is a powder made from earth pigments, which is mixed with water to make 20 rich colors that authentically re-fl ect colors found on existing antique furniture and build-ings.

To uncover the original wood surface on furniture, SOY-GelTM Professional Paint Stripper is easy to use, virtually odorless and has no known health hazards.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. M.M.
