WE DELIVER YOUR WAY

Few things are anticipated more in spring than the ar-rival of new leaves on the trees and budding flowers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head out-doors.

There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, an-nuals and trees begin to flower or show new sprouts come the springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoy-ment.

Annuals

Looking for first signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals.

* Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny

Spring Garden Timeflowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies.

* Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butter-flies and are often a cottage garden staple.

* Gypsophila: Also known as baby’s breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available.

* Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade.

* Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these flow-ers bloom in shades of white to violet.

* Pansy: These flowers are some of the earliest spring

bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips.

* Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower.

Perennials

These plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows.

* Cherry blossom: The flow-ers that sprout on cherry trees are some of the first signs of

spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals.

* Columbine: These beauti-ful blooms attract butterflies and can be a nice part of a garden bed.

* Jacob’s ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden.

* Primrose: These flowers come in a variety of shades, making them versatile in any garden. They also tend to attract butterflies and hum-mingbirds.

* Sweet violet: These fra-grant flowers are edible as well as attractive. These plants can self-plant, so un-less a gardener wants them to spread, they should be kept contained.

Many homeowners equate a beautiful landscape to roll-ing acres of pristine lawn. But changes in the climate and widespread seasonal restric-tions on water use each year could change the way people think about outfitting their yards.

There are many reasons peo-ple choose to forgo grass and opt for different ornamental elements in their yards. Cost is one factor. While grass seed is relatively inexpensive, the upkeep, including mowing, fertilizing, re-seeding, and watering, requires a signifi-cant investment of both time and money. Many homeown-ers choose to lay down sod to create a beautiful lawn, an ex-pensive option for homeown-

Grass-Free Landscaping a Viable Alternativeers with vast landscapes.

The environment is another reason homeowners look for grass alternatives. Grass requires a lot of upkeep, much of which is not envi-ronmentally friendly. For example, maintaining a pris-tine lawn requires the use of a gas-powered mower and oftentimes the application of chemical fertilizers and pes-ticides. Seeking alternatives to grass can be friendly on both the wallet and the envi-ronment.

Grass-Free Landscaping Alternatives

For those who are ready to say goodbye to grass, there are many alternatives.

* Ground cover: Homeown-ers who still desire the look of green can choose among dif-ferent types of ground cover that will quickly fill in the landscape. Clover, low-grow-ing evergreen plants and ivy are some of the more popular ground cover alternatives.

* Rocks: Decorative rocks in-termingled with native plants can add dimension and color to the yard. Once rocks are placed, there is little upkeep except for pulling the errant weeds.

* Mulch: A less expensive alternative to rocks is mulch. Mulch is available in different colors and types and can even be created by a homeowner by chipping trimmed branch-es from trees in the yard. It helps lock water into land-scaping beds, decreasing the

need for frequent watering.

* Water features: Think about installing a pond in the yard that can be bordered with stones and mulch. This will take up a good amount of space and can create a natural habitat for wildlife and even some low-maintenance pond fish.

* Concrete or patio stones: Although they’re not all-nat-ural materials, patios can take up areas normally consumed by the lawn and create ex-pansive outdoor entertaining areas. It will require an initial investment of the patio mate-rial, but once installed, pa-tios don’t require significant maintenance. Homeowners can offset the concrete jungle feel by placing plenty of pot-ted plants and container foli-age around the perimeter.

* Decking: Another alterna-tive to concrete and stones is a wood or composite material deck. Again, this structure

Potatoes are enjoyed world-over and make a versatile addition to any meal. Though many consumers purchase their potatoes at the local grocery store, potatoes can be easily grown in the home garden, too. Potatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil and full sun and will produce best in a loose, moisture-retentive soil. It is possible to get good potato yields in less-than-perfect soil, however. Home gardeners can begin planting potatoes in early spring, when the soil is able to be worked. Plants will not begin to grow until the soil temperature is at least 45 F. Plant only certified seed potatoes, which are available at most quality nurseries and garden centers. They are less likely to have disease than a potato you picked up at the supermarket and tried to establish. Small seed potatoes can be planted as-is. Larger seed potatoes should be cut into pieces that contain at least one or two “eyes.” Placing the seed potatoes in a warm location can entice them to bud and speed up the sprouting process once planted.

will increase outdoor living space and won’t require the level of routine maintenance needed to keep a lush lawn.

SMALLER JOBS WELCOMED!

Eco-friendly or conserva-tive landscaping is grow-ing increasingly popular among homeowners. Often referred to as eco-scaping, conservative landscaping includes removing inva-sive plants, conserving wa-ter and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. Homeowners looking to landscape in a more eco-friendly way this gardening season can employ the fol-lowing techniques.

* Remove invasive plants. Exotic plants are often in-vasive, as they have been brought here from different ecosystems and therefore have no natural enemies to keep them under control. Though exotic plants might add significant aesthetic ap-peal, this may come at the expense of local wildlife and existing plants. Many mistakenly assume all non-native plants are invasive, but that’s not always true.

Homeowners Embracing Eco-Scaping

Consult a local nursery be-fore removing a foreign plant to determine if it’s in-vasive or non-invasive. If it’s non-invasive, it does not need to be removed.

* Choose native plants whenever possible. Na-tive plants have adapted to the local climate and soil, which can offer numerous eco-friendly benefits. Be-

cause they’re accustomed to native conditions, native plants do not need chemical fertilizers and require less water to thrive than their non-native counterparts, which have not adapted to the climate and soil and, as a result, need help to grow and survive. In addition, na-tive plants won’t harm sur-rounding wildlife or plants.

* Plant strategically. Plants can be very picky when it comes to growing con-ditions. If placed in poor growing conditions, plants will require chemical sup-plements to thrive and more water to survive. When planting, do so strategically. Find the appropriate light, moisture and soil conditions for any new plants, and then plant accordingly. Doing so requires less maintenance, saving you money while adding aesthetic appeal to your property. A local nurs-ery can help find the right

growing conditions for your plants.

* Water properly. Far too often homeowners waste water, particularly when the mercury rises. Overwater-ing plants leads to excess runoff, which can result in pesticides and fertilizers be-ing carried to local streams and rivers. Excessive water-ing can also filter nutrients from the soil. When water-ing, water early in the morn-

ing, which allows plants to conserve water throughout the day. Native plants that have established themselves should not need supplemen-tal watering.

* Reduce reliance on chemi-cal pesticides. Pesticides should be a last resort. In addition to their potentially harmful effects on the local ecosystem, pesticides can be harmful to human health as well. Oftentimes, pesticides

exacerbate pest problems,

killing the beneficial spe-

cies like earthworms that

don’t recover as quickly

as their more harmful pest

counterparts. Only use pes-

ticides if absolutely neces-

sary. Consult a landscaping

or gardening professional

and ask about potential al-

ternatives to pesticides.

One of the best ways to im-prove a home’s resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property’s curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain

The case for choosing native plantsthe home and the surrounding property.

Unfortunately, many home-owners choose exotic plants when addressing their land-scape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants

are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrad-ing your property with exotic plants from a far away land, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants be-fore addressing your landscape.

* Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other’s survival. But as development continued, lo-cal wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The lo-cal wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the sur-

vival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.

* Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visu-ally stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner’s part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.

* Native plants might be a bet-ter investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to survive in its given area. Local

insect populations and fungal infections might be able to de-stroy an exotic plant, but a na-tive plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems.

Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors’, it’s important that homeowners recognize the en-vironmental benefits of choos-ing local plants before making any decisions.

Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes

Riding mowers can make lawn care more manageablebouts of procrastination is mow-ing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn.

Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gaso-line, electricity or simply hu-man power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most afford-able.Individuals had different features they could consider in their mow-ers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeown-ers with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the

lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun.

A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gar-dening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds.

Cost is the one thing that may de-ter some homeowners from a rid-ing mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and

cup holders.

However, some find that what rid-ing mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in convenience.

Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two sea-sons.

Hand injuries are a common side effect of certain occu-pations and hobbies. Ten-nis elbow or wrist and even carpal tunnel syndrome are well-recognized injuries. But ergonomic tools can help alle-viate injuries due to repetitive motions.

The term ergonomics is de-rived from the Greek words “ergon,” which means work, and “nomoi,” which means natural laws. In the simplest terms, ergonomics is the study of how work is done and how to make work better. It has led to an entire subset of ergonomicsincluding prod-ucts that can make work bet-ter and are safer for the body. This is done by designing items that increase utility of the item, are more comfort-able to use, and reduce injury

Ergonomic tools make gardening easier

through frequent use.

Ergonomic products are most readily associated with items of the workplace, including ergonomic keyboards, com-puter mice, office chairs, and lighting. But many industries have reevaluated operations to include tools that are ergo-nomic in design. Gardening is one area where ergonomics has become especially popu-lar.

The National Institute for Oc-cupational Safety and Health estimates that the rate of hand injuries in the workplace is 25 hand injuries for every 10,000 full-time employees. However, hand, back and injuries of other areas of the body are also commonplace due to hobbies like gardening. Many people have considered giving up gardening due to the pain that ensues from us-ing the wrong tools. Here are some ergonomic tools to con-sider for use while gardening.

* Extend a Hand Ergonomic Gardening Tool Set: These garden tools help individuals continue gardening tasks with ease and joint protection. The tools attach to the forearm and feature a right-angled grip to promote strength and leverage. Interchangeable heads turn the tool into a hoe, trowel, cultivator, or pruning saw.

* Radius Garden 102 Weeder Hand Tool: This device alle-viates wrist and hand fatigue from gripping and pulling out weeds the traditional way. The weeder features a pat-ented hand grip that provides more leverage with less wrist stress. The aluminum blade helps to cut through weed roots and lift out weeds with minimal effort.

* Garden Works Ergonomic 7 Pattern Sprayer: Instead of

squeezing a hand grip to ac-tivate the hose nozzle, this sprayer features a sliding thumb valve that controls wa-ter flow while reducing hand strain. The seven different water flow patterns allow gar-deners to choose from mist-ing to streaming water flows.

* Bond LH029 Ergonomic Handle Garden Spade: The handle and length of the tool is designed to create maxi-mum comfort and leverage when digging in soil.

* Miracle Gro(R) Ergonomic Garden Feeder: This feeder has an ergonomic handle for an easy, stress-free grip. The trigger lock allows for one-handed control and three spray patterns.

Gardening doesn’t have to be painful when you use tools

that are specially designed to fit the hand. They help al-leviate strain to the wrist and elbow while maximizing le-verage.

3RD GENERATION COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

All Work Is Owner Supervised On Every Job Site

A well-maintained landscape is important to many homeowners. In addition to adding to a home’s aesthetic appeal, a lush landscape can also help increase a home’s resale value. Oftentimes, home-owners without much experience tending to lawns and gardens hire a landscape architect to do the job for them. First-time homeowners on the lookout for a landscape architect should consider the fol-lowing tips to make the most of that process.

* Find a professional who will work with you. Though you might not plan to do any of the land-scaping or gardening, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a vision of what you want the property to look like. A landscape architect should be receptive to your ideas and willing to work with your vi-sion while keeping the channels of communication open through-out the project.

* Look for a professional with some experience. A landscape architect should be ready and willing to discuss his or her previ-ous work experience. Ask to see photos of previous work or even local addresses where work was done so you can see the finished product in person. Landscape ar-chitects without extensive work histories aren’t necessarily un-qualified, but homeowners should weigh the projects such architects have completed considerably.

* Discuss subcontractors. Some

Tips when hiring a landscape architectlandscape architects will handle the project entirely on their own, while others might subcontract part of the project. Determine who will be performing the proj-ect and how the hiring of subcon-tractors might affect the cost of the project.

* Discuss fees and get a fee schedule. How the project will be paid for is an important thing to discuss when interviewing land-scape architects. Each contractor might have a different fee struc-ture, so you will want the one that’s best suited to you. If a series of payments will be made, get a fee schedule so there’s no confu-sion down the road.

* Get references. A professional landscape architect should have a list of references at the ready for potential customers. When contacting references, be sure to ask how satisfied they are with the finished product and how the project went with regards to scheduling and fees. When talk-ing to a previous customer, also ask how amenable the landscape architect was to their ideas and how much he or she involved the homeowner in the project.

* Make sure the contractor is li-censed. In many communities, landscape architects must be li-censed. This information is pub-lic, so always verify if a landscape architect is licensed prior to mak-ing any final decisions or signing a contract.

According to the Home Safety Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to pre-venting home injuries, half of the children who die before their first birthday die from choking or suffocation. Many times such tragedies can be averted.

Parents of very young chil-dren can and should take it upon themselves to safeguard their youngsters from various choking and suffocation haz-ards around the house. The Home Safety Council offers the following tips to parents hoping to do just that.

* Keep smaller items out of reach. In general, anything that can fit through a tube of toilet paper is big enough to cause a child to choke. This includes hard candies, coins, peanuts, and even la-tex balloons. Always store these items in closed areas or in places that are beyond a child’s reach.

* Make the crib a kids-only zone. Pillows, toys and com-forters in a crib can cause a child to suffocate. Make the crib off-limits to these types of items, and always put chil-dren to bed on their backs.

* Clip window cords. Win-dow cords, such as those that hang from blinds, can be very dangerous if they make their way into the hands of young children. Clip the loops in these window cords and make sure they are always high up the window where curious kids cannot reach them.

* Read all toy labels. Kids have so many toys that par-ents can easily overlook toys that might be safety hazards. Parents of especially young children might feel a little run down from raising their youngster and unknowingly let a few toys slip past their

Make your home safer for kids

radar. However, it’s impera-tive parents read all toy labels before handing the toys over to a child. Pay specific atten-tion to the recommended ages for each toy, as those recom-mendations are often made with child safety in mind.

* Keep kids at an arm’s length at all times when around wa-ter. Another potential threat to kids’ safety around the house is water. Children can drown in as little as an inch of wa-ter, and it might only take a few minutes to do so. As a re-sult, parents must be mindful and attentive whenever kids are around water. Bathtubs, toilets and, of course, pools present serious safety hazards to young kids. Whenever kids

are around water, always stay within arm’s length.

* Erect a fence around a pool or spa. Many communities have laws in place that re-quire pools to be fenced in. But those laws often only mandate the yard where the pool is located be fenced in. While that might be suffi-cient, it can also help to erect a fence around the pool itself and keep a lock on the gate to prevent curious youngsters from making their way to the pool unsupervised.

* Turn buckets and wading pools upside down when not in use. Many parents pur-chase wading pools so their kids have a fun place to relax

on hot days. When the kids aren’t living it up, empty these pools and turn them upside down. Do the same with any buckets you have around the house. Whenever possible, store empty buckets outside the reach of children.

* Prevent burns. Adults know to be cautious around hot wa-ter, but kids often learn the hard way. To prevent burns, keep hot water at or below 120 F.

More information on making your home a safer place is available at www.homesafe-tycouncil.org.

Homeowners know no home is perfect. While the notion of a dream house is nice, every home eventually experienc-es a problem or two. Many problems are bound to occur sooner or later, but there are a few that diligent homeowners can prevent.

One of those preventable problems is flooding. Any home with floor drains or plumbing fixtures below street level can flood, and this can be due to inclem-ent weather, such as heavy rainstorms, local sewer sys-tem backup, or groundwater swelling. Flooding can even occur in the spring when

How to floodproof your homemelting occurs as the air temperature increases. While homeowners won’t be able to control the weather, they can take steps to floodproof their home.

* Do some preventive land-scaping. If the ground around the home’s foundation slopes toward the house, make some grading changes so that the ground slopes away from the home.

* Insulate the heating ducts. Some home heating ducts are under the basement floor. In such homes, homeowners should make sure these ducts are properly insulated and

watertight.

* Make sure the vents all lead outside the home. The weath-er can cause moisture issues, but some moisture problems can come from inside the home as well. Clothes dry-ers and bathrooms are both internal moisture sources, and these sources should always be vented outside the home.

* Clean gutters and down-spouts. Gutters and down-spouts should be cleaned to ensure water is effectively being diverted away from the home. Clean gutters and downspouts in the spring af-ter a long winter, and do so

again in the fall to keep fallen leaves from blocking the flow of water. Downspouts should extend four feet from the out-side wall of the house.

* Inspect the home at least once a year. Before buying a home, buyers often hire a pro-fessional inspector to ensure the home is safe and sound. But the inspections should not stop once buyers sign on the dotted line. To prevent flooding, homeowners should inspect their home’s founda-tion for cracks once a year. If the home has a chimney and fireplace, check for cracks there as well. If any cracks are discovered, consult a profes-sional immediately.

* Clean out basement drains. Basement drains should be cleaned annually from the house to the street. If the drains are still slow after cleaning, then clean them more than once a year.

* When leaving the home for an extended period of

time, turn the water valve off. Homeowners worried about flooding can calm those fears when going on vacation or another long trip by turn the water valve off at the source. This ensures that, should a line break while no one is home, water will not pump into the house.

Floodproofing a home can save homeowners from po-tentially costly repairs and

unsightly damage to a home’s interior.

* Tighten things up. Loose parts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates, and interior trim panels, can create rattles and cause parts to get dam-aged or fall off. What’s more, rattling sounds can be a noisy nuisance for drivers and passengers alike. Permatex Threadlockers can be used to keep the nuts and bolts from coming loose and save parts replacement costs. They also have a threadlocker for plas-tic fasteners, which vehicle manufacturers have grown to rely on more and more.

* Wash your car. A newly washed car not only looks good, but it’s often much safer as well. Take your car to a car wash a few days before the trip and have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned. A thor-ough cleaning will remove dirt and grime from the ve-hicle’s undercarriage, not to mention unsightly bird drop-pings and water spots or salt stains leftover from winter.

* Fix foggy headlight lenses. Many spring and summer road trippers travel at night so their days can be spent soaking up some sun at the beach or lake. Before head-ing off for parts unknown, motorists should inspect their headlight lenses to reduce risk of accident. If the lenses are yellowed and foggy, that’s likely because salt, ozone and road debris has dulled them to a point where vision can be impaired, placing drivers and their passengers at risk. But foggy lenses don’t man-date an expensive headlight replacement. In fact, The Per-matex Lens Renew Kit makes it easy to clean up and polish dull headlight lenses and re-store them to like new con-dition, improving your car’s lighting and driver visibility.

* Check the battery. Over time, battery terminals and cables will start to corrode. Such corrosion will eventu-ally eat away at the battery’s parts, creating a bad connec-tion that sooner or later will require the battery be re-

Ready your car for spring and summer travel

placed. Check the battery be-fore your trip and remember to clean the battery periodi-cally as part of routine vehicle maintenance.

* Address windshield nicks and bullseyes. Nicks and chips in the windshields are a common problem regard-less of the season. But such damage is most prevalent in the winter because of the ex-tra debris that’s on the road. These nicks and cracks need to get fixed as soon as pos-sible to prevent them from spreading and resulting in the need for a windshield re-placement. Oftentimes, mo-torists can address nicks and bullseyes in their own drive-ways in a matter of minutes. For example, the Permatex Bullseye Windshield Repair kit is tailor made for do-it-yourselfers, requiring no heating or mixing while en-suring each repair is virtually undetectable.
