HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Ac-tion: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

PATROON TOASTMASTERS

We meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 510 Albany-Shaker Road in Loudonville, NY to hone our communication skills for personal or professional reasons. Check out http://Pa-troon.TastmastersClubs.org for more information. Get started today. We welcome guests!

CALLING ALL MENTORS!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organiza-tion that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move to-ward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with stu-dents on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while develop-ing a relationship that pro-vides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This pro-gram focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a posi-tive role model in the stu-dent’s life. You will help the student to develop core val-ues and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empower-ing them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a week-ly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a posi-tive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - National non-profit Binky Patrol pro-vides blankets for children in need locally through the Mechanicville chapter. They supply handmade blankets and hats to children who are sick, homeless, grieving or traumatized throughout Saratoga, Albany and Rens-selaer Counties. No sewing experience necessary. They also need donations of ma-terials such as cotton flannel, fabric, yardage or scraps, Po-lar fleece, quilt batting, post-age, old clean sheets, yarn and thread. Blanket sizes range from 24x30” to twin for teens. Work on your own schedule to make blankets or help deliver them. Contact Dayle Gruder at 664-5271 or [email protected].

Though the job market for newly minted college gradu-ates has proven less than ideal in recent years, members of the class of 2014 entered a job market that was on the re-bound. According to the “Job Outlook 2014” survey from the National Association of Col-leges and Employers, employ-ers anticipated hiring nearly 8 percent more 2014 graduates for their domestic operations than they hired from the class of 2013.

That’s good news for new grads, but members of the class of 2014 should still ex-pect a competitive job market in which companies can aff ord to be patient as they attempt to fi nd the best possible candi-date for each opening. Often-times the best candidate, espe-cially for entry-level positions, is the one who combines some experience with a willingness to learn and do whatever it takes to help a company suc-ceed. Many candidates boast such experience and enthusi-asm, but there are some addi-tional steps new graduates can take to improve their chances of landing their fi rst jobs out of college.

• Gain some relevant experi-ence. While college is the best time to gain some experience that’s relevant to your fi eld, that does not mean you can’t still earn an internship now that you have donned your cap and gown and received your diploma. Many business-es look to recent graduates to fi ll their internships, as recent grads have years of study un-der their belts and, because they are no longer enrolled in classes, more fl exibility than current students. If the job market in your chosen fi eld is tepid, start looking for intern-ships. These can be a great way to start making some profes-sional contacts, and many peo-ple fi nd themselves ultimately working full-time for the com-pany where they fi rst landed an internship.

HELPFUL HINTS TO LAND YOUR FIRST JOB

• Establish an online presence. Another way for recent gradu-ates to get noticed is to estab-lish a positive online presence. Something as simple as creat-ing a profi le on the profession-al networking site LinkedIn can help recent graduates get no-ticed by prospective employ-ers. Even if you have little or no relevant professional expe-rience, create a profi le that in-cludes your education history, interests, accolades or awards you earned while in school and even a brief summary of your career goals.

Another way to establish an online presence is to begin a blog. The blog should not be used as a tool to discuss your personal life, but rather to ex-press your thoughts on top-ics relevant to the career you hope to pursue. Demonstrat-ing an understanding or even just a passion for the industry can be a great way to show prospective employers that you are looking for a career and not just a job.

• Join a professional organiza-tion. Other options to network and improve your chances of landing your fi rst job can be at-tained by joining a professional organization. Many such orga-nizations welcome new mem-bers, even those with relatively little or even no professional experience. Your university may even sponsor such an or-ganization and host regularly scheduled forums relevant to your industry. Such forums of-ten feature lectures or talk ses-sions with already established professionals who can provide advice on landing a fi rst job or internship or furnish grads with industry contacts who might off er similar help. Mem-berships in such organizations is often free or inexpensive, so take advantage of this oppor-tunity if it presents itself.

• Use the resources at your dis-posal. Many college graduates are unaware that they have valuable resources at their dis-

posal that can greatly increase their chances of securing a job out of college. The career ser-vices offi ce at the university is an invaluable resource that is plugged into the business community in its town or city. Such an offi ce can connect you will fellow alumni, many of whom want to help their fel-low graduates establish their careers. A career services of-fi ce also can help new gradu-ates fi ne tune their resumes and cover letters so they have a greater chance of landing a job.

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, fi ve days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Trans-portation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling ap-proximately 4 billion miles each year.

The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Coun-cil, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger ve-

hicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger ve-hicles.

Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Chil-dren, especially those new to school buses, may fi nd the bus fun and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines.

* Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffi c, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives.

* Dress for optimal visibil-ity, especially in inclement weather when it can be diffi -cult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians.

* Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists.

* Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly man-ner.

* Promptly fi nd a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without making a fuss.

SAFETY TIPS FOR SCHOOL BUS RIDERS

* Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap.

* Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion.

* Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times.

* Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situ-ations that will cause driver distraction.

* Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit.

* Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers.

* Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very diffi cult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus.

* Wait for the driver to check traffi c before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.
