Beginning in the mid-1800s, steamboats carried people between New York City and the Albany area on the Hudson River. Romantic images lull us into believing it was a quiet means of travel, but a crowded river, faulty equipment and the bravado of the captains resulted in at least one major catastrophe every year. Night boats collided and sank, carelessness caused boiler explosions, races put passengers at risk and fires would quickly swallow the wooden vessels. The grand Empire of Troy suffered many collisions. The Swallow broke in two on a rock, Reindeer’s explosion took forty lives at once and the Oregon and C. RENSSELAER - CDTA, manag-er of the Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station, has teamed up with Underground Railroad History Project of the Capi-tal Region in order to bring local Underground Railroad history to the public. Locat-ed in the main concourse of the Rensselaer Train Station, a seven foot tall, three sided kiosk contains information and visual images of people, places and events related to this significant chapter in the history of Albany, the Capital Region, and New York State. Based upon the research conducted by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, historians and co-founders of Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc., Al-bany and the Capital Region were hotbeds of abolitionist activity prior to the Civil War. According to Paul Stewart, “Letters, narratives, newspa-per articles, and broadsides tell us a much more complex and comprehensive story of Underground Railroad activity than we routinely hear about. They provide us with a new interpretation of a very old story.” The Rens-selaer Amtrak Train Station will host the kiosk through February 2014.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF

NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

A recent tradition is the save-the-date card, a precursor to wedding invitations that simply lets guests know when the wedding is so they can clear their calendars and be there on a couple’s big day. While save-the-date cards are best kept simple, there are a few rules couples should follow before sending their cards out to loved ones.

* Finalize the guest list before sending save-the-date cards. Couples must fi nalize their guest lists before sending their save-the-date cards. Doing so avoids the potentially messy situation that would no doubt arise if a person were to re-

ceive a save-the-date card but then not make the fi nal guest list. Trimming the guest list often comes down to fi nances, so couples also want to agree on their budget before sending out their save-the-date cards. Once the guest list has been fi nalized, couples can send out their save-the-date cards as soon as possible.

* Confi rm addresses. Couples should confi rm their loved ones’ addresses before mailing any save-the-date cards. This can be easily accomplished by sending mass emails to friends and family members or contacting individuals via private mes-

sages sent on social media sites. Postage to send save-the-date cards can be costly, especially for couples with large guest lists. Confi rming addresses can save couples money on potentially wasted postage should the cards be returned because they were sent to the wrong address. In addition, confi rming ad-

dresses ensures everyone gets their cards and no one feels left out when relatives receive cards and they don’t because a couple did not have their correct address.

* Keep things appropriate. Save-the-date cards need not be as formal as wedding invitations, but they should still be ap-propriate. Guests often keep save-the-date cards on their refrigerators, where people of all ages can see the cards. So while cards can be light-hearted, they should still be family-friendly. For example, photos of the bride- and groom-to-be decked out in swimsuits should be avoided.

* Don’t overdo it with information. Save-the-date cards don’t need to include as much information as the more formal invi-tations, which tend to include information about the ceremo-ny, reception, hotel, directions, and other relevant wedding details. A save-the-date card only needs to include the date of the wedding, including the month, day and year so guests are not confused if the cards are going out well in advance of the wedding day. Couples can include a link to their wed-ding Web site on the backs of their save-the-date cards, which makes it easier for guests to learn more details about the wed-ding without inundating them with information too early.

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costel-lo, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the win-ter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volun-teers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration through-out the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were reward-ed in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which features historic articles, photos and up-dates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

Finding a new job is never an easy task. That task grew even more diffi cult over the last half decade, when a struggling economy forced many companies to lay off workers and insti-tute hiring freezes. As a result, unemployment numbers rose, and many out-of-work men and women found themselves searching for ways to stand out among a crowded pool of ap-plicants.

Standing out in a crowded job market has always been tough, but many professionals fi nd it even more diffi cult to get no-ticed now, when many companies request prospective em-ployees apply for job postings via the Internet. That process can be frustrating, as even the most qualifi ed applicants can easily get lost among the myriad of workers all applying for the same position. But as daunting as fi nding a new job may seem to those looking for work, there are ways to stand out among the masses.

* Go the extra mile when sending your application. Many on-line job postings provide a link or an email address where ap-plicants can fi ll out an application or send their resumes. This is a necessary step, and applicants should follow the directions in the posting. But applicants who really want to get noticed can take the extra step of fi nding the contact information for the company’s hiring manager and sending their resume directly to that person’s email address. Include the title of the position you’re applying for in the subject line of your email, and cut and paste your cover letter into the body of the email. In addi-tion to sending your email to the company’s hiring manager, consider CC’ing the person who might be your boss if you were to get the position.

* Tighten things up. Your resume should refl ect your work ex-perience, but you want to focus primarily on the experience and skills that are relevant to the position. You can list past positions or internships you’ve had, but keep the synopsis of those positions brief if they bear little relevance to the posi-tion for which you’re applying. The main focus of your resume should be the things you have done in the past that make you the best candidate for this job. This might change as you apply

for various positions, but tailor each resume to each specifi c position.

* Make your resume download-friendly. Applying for positions but getting little response despite your qualifi cations? Chances are your resume might not be download-friendly. Bullet points and boxes might look good to you, but if the hiring manager on the receiving end of your resume does not have the same version of the program you’re using, that resume might look like a scrambled mess by the time the it’s downloaded. In such instances your resume is almost certain to end up in the scrap heap, no matter how qualifi ed you might be. When uploading your resume to a company Web site or emailing it to a hiring manager, choose a format they can easily download. A PDF, for example, is a format that’s easy to download and unlikely to scramble.

* Beware of hyperlinks. Adding hyperlinks to a resume can be hit or miss. When it’s a hit, a hiring manager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring manager’s email address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegat-ing your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume. Hyperlinks can be useful and help you stand out, but only when they’re employed under the right circumstances.

* Include social media profi les. More and more companies want employees who are familiar with social media, which can work to an applicants’ advantage or prove detrimental. If you have been responsible regarding your use of social media, con-ducting yourself in a professional matter and even benefi tting your existing employer, by all means share these profi les with potential employers. But if you have traditionally used social media purely as a social tool and not in a professional manner, then it bears little relevance to your job search and likely won’t help you stand out for the right reasons.

In 2005 we were the fi rst in the area to bring you the Lastone Massage and now: BAMBOO-FUSION.

What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots. Today, bamboo massage is touted as Bamboo-Fusion but bamboo can be seen as much more than a new trend or accessory.

Bamboo-Fusion massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo heated stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide deep-tissue work to promote lymphatic drainage into the technique. Stalks are usually heated and are incorporated into the massage. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

One of the fi rst people to develop a bamboo massage technique was Natahlie Cecilia, a certifi ed Thai massage therapist from France. Several of our top massage therapists have trained exclusively with Nathalie Cecilia, the creator of Bamboo-Fusion and are ready to show you the many benefi ts of Bamboo-Fusion massage.
