Baptized and Sent — Bautizados y Enviados

Dear friends, Pope Francis designated October 2019 as the Extraordinary Missionary Month to celebrate the 100th anniver-sary of Pope Benedict XV's Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud on the Church missionary commitment. Pope Benedict XV's letter was very important because humanity was immersed in a post-war period, many revolutions were starting, totalitarian regimes arose, and that is why Pope Benedict insisted that all the baptized resume their missionary commitment. Pope Francis wants to revive a missionary awareness to re-claim once again the importance of renewing the Church’s mis-sionary commitment and of giving fresh evangelical impulse to her mission of preaching and bringing to the world the salvation of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again. The motto for this October’s Missionary Month is Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World. Pope Francis calls us to remember that celebrating this month will help us to rediscover the missionary dimension of our faith in Jesus Christ, a faith graciously bestowed on us in baptism. Pope Francis calls us to remember that our filial relationship with God is not something private, but always in relation to the Church. He reminds us how through our communion with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we, together with so many of our other brothers and sisters, are born to new life. This divine life is not a product for sale —we do not practice proselytism— but a treasure to be given, communicated and proclaimed: that is the meaning of mission. We received this gift freely and we share it freely (cf. Mt 10:8), without excluding anyone. Pope Francis reminds us how God wills that all people be saved by coming to know the truth and by expe-riencing his mercy through the ministry of the Church, the univer-sal sacrament of salvation (cf. 1 Tim 2:4; Lumen Gentium, 48). Our mission, then, is rooted in the fatherhood of God and the motherhood of the Church. The mandate given by the Risen Jesus at Easter is inherent in Baptism: as the Father has sent me, so I send you, filled with the Holy Spirit, for the reconciliation of the world (cf. Jn 20:19-23; Mt 28:16-20). This mission is part of our identity as Christians; it makes us responsible for enabling all men and women to realize their voca-tion to be adoptive children of the Father, to recognize their per-sonal dignity and to appreciate the intrinsic worth of every human life, from the moment of conception until the moment of natural death. Our call is to initiate a new and profound reality in the Church, recognizing that we are always in mission in the world, that we are called to see the world with the eyes and the heart of Jesus be-cause every baptized man and every baptized woman is in himself and in herself a mission.

Queridos amigos y amigas, El Papa Francisco designó el mes de octubre del 2019 como el Mes Misionero Extraordinario para así celebrar los 100 años de la promulgación de la Carta Apostólica Maximum illud del Papa Benedicto XV que hablaba sobre el compromiso misionero. La carta del Papa Benedicto XV fue muy

importante pues la humanidad estaba sumergida en una post-guerra, se iniciaban muchas revoluciones, surgían regímenes totalitarios, y por eso el Papa Benedicto insistía en que todos los bautizados retomaran su compromiso misionero. El Papa Francisco quiere que se viva un tiempo misionero para reclamar una vez más la importancia de renovar el compromiso misionero de la Iglesia, y de impulsar evangélicamente su misión de predicar y llevar al mundo la salvación de Jesucristo, muerto y resucita-do. El lema de este octubre misionero es Bautizados y Enviados: la Iglesia de Cristo en Misión en el Mundo. El Papa Francisco nos llama a recordar que la celebración de este mes nos ayudará en primer lugar a redescubrir el sentido misionero de nuestra fe en Jesucristo, fe que hemos recibido gratuitamente como un don en el bautismo. La fe es el ancla y la fuerza de la vida Vigesimoseptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Semana del 6 de octubre del 2019 Escucha la Palabra (2 Timoteo 1:6 – 8, 13 – 14) Al escuchar las palabras de San Pablo proclamadas en esta lectura, ¿qué les impactó más? ¿Qué palabra o frase les llamó la atención? Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: Jesús nos enseña que nuestra fe es poderosa y, con ella, podemos lograr grandes cosas. Podemos perdonar, amar y compartir con los demás. ¿Cuál de estas cosas hacen más a menudo? Pregunta para los jóvenes: El Evangelio nos dice que aún un poquito de fe es suficiente para hacer que sucedan cosas sorprendentes. ¿Cómo mantienes viva y creciente tu fe? ¿Qué pasos piensas tomar para contin-uar viviendo tu fe el resto de tu vida? Pregunta para los adultos: Estar “en Cristo” significa vivir como Cristo nos enseña. ¿Qué señales de generosidad, perdón, hospitalidad o cualquier otra enseñanza de Jesús ven en su vida? Faith is the anchor and force of life Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Week of October 6, 2019 Listen to the Word (2 Timothy 1:6 – 8, 13 – 14) As you hear the words of St. Paul proclaimed in this reading, what strikes you most? What word or phrase caught your ear? Look into your life Question for children: Jesus teaches us that our faith is is pow-erful and with it, we can do great things. We can forgive, love, and share with others. Which of these do you do most often? Question for youth: The Gospel tells us even a little bit of faith is enough to make amazing things happen. How are you keeping your faith alive and growing? What good things happen in your life because of your faith? Question for adults: Being “in Christ” means living as Christ teaches. What signs do you see in your life of generosity, for-giveness, hospitality, or any other of Jesus’ teachings? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live in the way of Jesus by faith. Have family members talk about their faith and how it grows. Talk about an instance in particular when your faith was tested. Who encourages us during those times? How can we encourage others when their faith is tested? Together as a family make a sign that says Have Faith, and put it on the refrigerator. During the coming week when a hard-ship occurs in the family, have the involved family members look at the sign and recall how their faith will give them the courage to face the hardship. For two days this week, make a list of all the violent acts yo hear about either in your community or reported on the TV news or in the newspaper. Then as a family discuss these questions: 1. What are the causes of the violence? 2. Is anyone doing anything about it? What? 3. Is anyone trying to work for peace? How? 4. Is there anything we can do about it? In the readings for Sunday, there is communication between God and the people involved in the story. In all cases, there is a plea for God to help and to give strength. Have your family reflect on one troubling situation about which they will pray to God for help. Use the prayer as an additional meal prayer or as an even-ing prayer.

The Tenth Commandment. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.” (CCC, 2534-2557) Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. (Mt 6:21) When Jesus began the Sermon on the Mount, he proclaimed the eight Beatitudes as the ways to authentic happiness. The first of these stated that poverty of spirit would enable us to inherit the Kingdom of God. In other words, the first step on the road to joy begins with a healthy detachment from material goods. Later on in the same sermon, Jesus taught that building up wealth for its own sake is foolishness. We should be more interested in spiritu-al riches. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up trea-sures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Mt 6:19-21) The financial scandals that periodically occur in our culture remind us that greed is a constant threat to moral behavior. It leads many to conclude that money is the root of all evils. But in fact, “the love of money is the root of all evils” (1 Tm 6:10). In the study of the Seventh Commandment, we dealt with the visible acts of stealing and injustice. The Tenth Commandment looks at the interior attitudes of greed and envy that lead us to steal and act unjustly. On the positive side, the Tenth Commandment calls us to practice poverty of spirit and generosity of heart. These virtues liberate us from being slaves to money and possessions. They enable us to have a preferential love for the poor and to be wit-nesses of justice and peace in the world. They also enable us to adopt a simplicity of life that frees us from consumerism and helps us preserve God’s creation. Sinful inclinations move us to envy what others have and lead to an unrestrained drive to acquire all that we can. We do have a reasonable need to acquire the means needed to care for our families. Greed is the distortion of this desire. The greedy person will stop at nothing to get all the money and possessions possi-ble. We need to remember that envy is the companion of greed; it is an attitude that fills us with sadness at the sight of another’s prosperity. Envious people can be consumed with so much de-sire for what others have that they will even commit crimes to get what they want. Baptized people should counter envy with humility, thanksgiv-ing to God for his gifts to oneself and to others, goodwill, and surrender to the providence of God (CCC, 2554). Poverty of heart is a way to avoid greed and envy. “Abandonment to the provi-dence of the Father in heaven frees us from anxiety about tomor-row. Trust in God is a preparation for the blessedness of the poor. They shall see God” (CCC, 2547, citing Mt 6:25-34). El Décimo Mandamiento. “No codiciarás los bienes ajenos.” (CIC, 2534-2557) Donde está tu tesoro, ahí también está tu corazón. (Mt 6:21) Cuando Jesús comenzó a predicar el Sermón de la Montaña, el proclamó las ocho Bienaventuranzas como los caminos que llevan a la auténtica felicidad. La primera de estas dice que la pobreza de espíritu nos permitirá heredar el Reino de Dios. En otras palabras, el primer paso en el camino hacia el gozo comienza con un distanciamiento sano de los bienes materiales. Más tarde, en el mismo sermón, Jesús enseñó que acumular riquezas simplemente por acumularlas es una necedad. Nos deberíamos preocupar más por las riquezas espirituales. “No acumulen ustedes tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el moho los destruyen, donde los ladrones perforan paredes y se los roban. Más bien acumulen tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el moho los destruyen, no hay ladrones que perforen las paredes y se los roben; porque donde está tu tesoro, ahí también está tu corazón”. (Mt 6:19-21) Los escándalos financieros que ocurren periódicamente en nuestra cultura nos recuerdan que la avaricia es una amenaza constante contra el comportamiento moral. Lleva a muchas personas a la conclusión de que el dinero es la causa de todo mal. Pero de hecho, “la raíz de todos los males es el afán de dinero” (1 Tm 6:10). En el estudio del Séptimo Man-damiento, tratamos de los actos visibles del robo y de la injusticia. El Décimo Mandamiento analiza las actitudes interiores de la avaricia y de la envidia, que nos llevan a robar y a actuar injustamente. En el lado positivo, el Décimo Mandamiento nos llama a practicar la pobreza de espíritu y la generosidad del corazón. Estas virtudes nos liberan de la esclavitud del dinero y de las posesiones materiales. Hacen posible que tengamos un amor preferencial por los pobres y que demos testimonio de la justicia y la paz en el mundo. También nos ayudan a adoptar una sencillez de vida que nos libera del consumismo y nos ayuda a preservar la creación de Dios. Las inclinaciones pecaminosas nos llevan a envidiar lo que otros poseen y también a querer adquirir, desenfrenadamente, todo lo que podamos. Es cierto que tenemos una necesidad razonable de adquirir lo que sea necesario para cuidar de nuestras familias; más la avaricia es una distorsión de este deseo. Una persona avara hará todo lo posible por conseguir todo el dinero y posesiones posibles. Tenemos que recordar que la envidia es compañera de la avaricia; es una actitud que nos llena de tristeza cuando vemos la prosperidad de otra persona. Las personas envidiosas pueden llegar a estar tan con-sumidas por el deseo de tener lo que poseen los demás que incluso cometen crímenes para obtener lo que quieren. La gente bautizada debería responder a la envidia con humildad, dan-do gracias a Dios por los dones que les ha otorgado a ellos y a los demás, teniendo buena voluntad y rindiéndose a la providencia de Dios (CIC, 2554). La pobreza de corazón es una forma de evitar la avaricia y la envidia. “El abandono en la providencia del Padre del cielo libera de la inquietud por el mañana. La confianza en Dios dispone a la bienaven-turanza de los pobres: ellos verán a Dios” (CIC, 2547, citando Mt 6:25-34).
