Editors Letter... There

is a fabulous rumour that this summer will be a hot

one, having just enjoyed 5 continuous days of

sunshine in May, we can live in hope! However,

before we get carried away with the dizzy heights

of the 80‘s... the forecast for the bank holiday

weekend and half term break, as I write this

editorial... looks bleak. Fingers crossed they got it

wrong!

Auckley Show fever hits us once again, we are two

months away from one of the annual highlights of

village life and the committee are working hard on

finalising their plans. We have an update, provided

by the Chair of the Committee, Neil Woodward,

on events for this years show. We also have the

schedule for the show, so if you are planning on entering any of the competitions, you should find all

the information you need.

Sunday 6th June, Stafforce Recruitment hold their

4th Annual charity event at Hayfield Lakes, this

promises to be a fun filled day for all the family.

You can find more information of this event in this

month‘s Arrow.

It‘s official, our new neighbours—the lions at YWP

are the new stars of Branton! Visit them this half

term and give them a warm Yorkshire welcome!

This months issue of the Arrow will be distributed

to Blaxton. Once a quarter, residents in Blaxton

will benefit from the Arrow being delivered to their

door free of charge. If anyone in Blaxton has

any news or information for the Arrow,

please let me know by early August in

readiness for the September issue.

The deadline for the July issue of the Arrow

is Wednesday 21st June. Once again, thank

you to everyone who contributes articles

and provides information for the villages as

well as the advertisers who continually

support the Arrow.

Best Wishes

Police Clampdown on

Domestic Burglary Police in Doncaster are reinforcing and continuing

the fight against people who commit burglaries.

Operation Account has been set up to take place

over the next eight weeks to drive down burglary

and to target people who continue to commit

burglary offences.

Burglary dwellings in Doncaster have reduced by

16% in the past year however, there has been a

slight increase in the south of the borough during

April. Police continue to remind home owners that

they can still do more to stop burglaries.

Detective Inspector Steve Whittaker from the

Priority Crime Team in Doncaster said, "We all

have our part to play in reducing offences of

burglary. Although crime levels are at an all time

low, we are urging home owners to be more

vigilant.‖

Advice to be more vigilant includes making sure

alarms are working and set and that car keys are

kept out of view in the home to deter

opportunistic thieves.

Detective Inspector Whittaker added, ―South

Yorkshire Police take offences of burglary

extremely seriously and we will do everything we

can to prevent and detect burglaries. If we suspect

you of committing crime, we will do everything in

our power to bring you to justice. Patrols in the

area have been increased with a view to disrupting

as much criminal behaviour as possible."

The police will continue to reassure the public and

seek the publics support during this operation and

thereafter, to ensure that burglary offences are

driven down.

Police would ask the public to always report

any suspicious behaviour or activity to the

police on 0114 2202020, or via crimestoppers

on 0800 555 111. All information will be dealt

with in the strictest of confidence.

We would like to congratulate

our son Mark Phillips on his

Promotion to Captain. He is

formally from Branton and Finningley and went to

Branton C/E and Hayfields Schools. He started

army life at 16 (13 if you count Cadets) in Junior

Leaders and has worked his way up through the

ranks. Also completing very hard physical

Commando training and earning his Green Beret.

Well done from Mum and Dad and everyone who

knows him.

Race Night At the Harvey

Arms. The decision to hold a Race Night to raise funds

for the Finningley Village Fun Day proved to

be a winner. All the worries about whether we

would get any support vanished into the blue as

the room rapidly filled with chatting people, some

a little nervous having never been to such an event

before, but all obviously out to enjoy themselves.

The members of the Finningley Village

Community Group still glanced nervously at

each other. Was everything in place , had they

forgotten anything?

Then we were off!

Eric kept everything moving well, the punters

placed their bets, shouted encouragement to their

chosen horse and cheered or groaned as the

winner passed the post.

The Pie and peas served by Eric, Gordon and their

staff were consumed and enjoyed and the punters

gathered at the start line for the second set of

races on the card.

All in all the evening proved a great success.

Our thanks must go out to the generous

supporters, the many many people who supported

us by sponsoring races, owners, and jockeys. All

those who provided us with prizes for our raffle or

who simply said I can't attend but take this as a

donation. They are too many to mention here but

we did mention them all on our Race programme.

Our thanks must also to the Harvey Arms who

gave us the venue and their time, and all members

of the community group who worked and

supported the event throughout. Last, but

certainly not least, we must thank all those

people who came along and gave so willingly, who

cheered the evening on to be such a success and

without whom the event would have been a non-

starter. Congratulations to you all! The exact

figure is not in yet, but the sum you helped raise

will go along way to meet the needs and expenses

of the Fun Day

Thank you.

St Georges Day

Parade Attended by

over 1000 scouting

groups in the

region. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from The 58th

Doncaster Scout group, based in

Cantley, took part in the St Georges Day

Parade on Sunday 25th April. Watching

our young people, proudly marching

through Doncaster town centre to the

sound of the band playing was fantastic.

The groups all filed into church followed

by the procession of Colours. The

Minister welcomed everyone to

celebrate membership of the worldwide

fellowship of Scouts and to give thanks to God followed by prayers, readings and hymns.

Everyone left St Georges Minster singing the National Anthem, however, there was now a monsoon to

welcome everyone but it didn‘t dampen our spirits! As we arrived back at base, everyone from parents,

cub leaders, beavers, cubs and scouts were absolutely soaked through. Here‘s to another successful St

Georges Day Parade and let‘s hope the sun shines ‗all day‘ next year.

Flowers for Someone Special Do you know someone special?

Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or

someone who just deserves something nice. ‗We would like to request a 'Bouquet for Someone Special' for Edna Dimbleby of Auckley. Edna is a

lovely lady who is very kind and thoughtful of others, she is always cheerful and helpful. Edna has been

battling with various eye problems for several years, and is having regular injections into her eye to save

her sight. Despite this she never complains and continues to be involved in things, always putting others

first. She really deserves a beautiful scented bouquet to show her how much she is appreciated. In

addition to this, on 18 June Edna and her husband Ron celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary. We

wish them both many more happy years together. From all your friends.‘

The Arrow and Petalsflorist would love to send

someone special a bouquet. Also, listen to Trax FM

Airport

There have been more flights in and out of the airport of late, one of the reasons being that Easyjet now fly

from there to several destinations. Even with the change of regulations to allow QC4 aircraft to fly at

night, the Parish Council has not been made aware of any serious increase in night-time noise.

Police

Due to the increased use of the airport, the police officers stationed there can no longer be utilised to patrol

the surrounding villages. The area from Old Cantley village, Branton, Auckley (including the former

„camp‟), Blaxton and through to Finningley village will now come under one PC based at Rossington, with

the assistance of one PCSO.

The PACT (Police and Community Together) meetings which have been held in the various villages

covered by the police at the airport and changed location each month, are henceforth to be held at Bawtry

and Tickhill only; the name is also being changed to “Have Your Say”. Why the villages have been cut out

we have not been informed, but protests will be made.

Playing Field Shelter

Petitions were presented to Doncaster MBC planning department against the installation of a shelter on the

playing field. A further petition, signed by users of the field, was presented in favour of having it. Both

views were amongst the various factors taken into account when the planning department decided to

approve the installation of the shelter. It should be noted that this facility is intended for all users of the

field, not just a particular age group or type of user.

Resignation of Parish Councillor

Council is sorry to lose Mrs. Lynn Allwood who has resigned from the Council due to work and

family commitments. Mrs. Allwood has played an active and enthusiastic part in the affairs of the

Council, particularly in organising the 2009 Senior Citizens‘ outing. .

As a result of the resignation, a vacancy on the Council now exists and a new member will be co-

opted onto the Council at the next meeting on 9th June 2010.

Any eligible person wishing to be considered for the post should write to the Clerk, the application

to be received no later than 12 noon on Tuesday 8th June 2010. An eligible person is one who

resides in or within 3 miles of the Auckley Parish, or has his/her main place of work within the

Parish.

Proposed New Play Equipment

The ‗Play Builder‘ Scheme is a government-funded project, implemented by Doncaster Council staff,

to provide play equipment in a natural setting. Auckley‘s Riverside Park is one of several areas in

the Doncaster Borough to benefit from the scheme. DMBC recently carried out a consultation

exercise at Riverside Park and in the local schools to ascertain what play equipment children wished

to see on Riverside Park.

Additional recreational items will be provided from Section 106 monies and Parish Council funds.

Hopefully the scheme will be implemented by the end of the current financial year.

Dog Fouling

The majority of dog owners clean up after their dogs. However, there are a few irresponsible

owners who allow their dogs to foul pavements and recreation grounds, and Council would remind

these owners that allowing dogs to foul without cleaning up after them is an offence and they are

liable to be fined. Dog waste bins are sited at various sites in the Parish, i.e. at Riverside Park, the

Spey Drive play area and the Hayfield Estate, and it would be appreciated if these bins could be used.

Auckley Show

The Village Show will be held on Saturday, 14th August at the Riverside Park. Council has agreed to

make a financial contribution towards this event, and wishes the Show Committee every success on

the day.

New Parish Councillor

A warm welcome is extended to Mrs. Julia Staniforth, a resident of Auckley, who has recently been

co-opted onto the Council following the resignation of Mr. Peter Cockett.

If any residents are interested in seeking a review please contact the Julia Staniforth (Clerk to the Council) to obtain further information. Dog fouling is continuing to increase in spite of previous requests, creating a serious health and safety risk. All dog owners are asked to ensure that when dogs foul any public area it is collected, wrapped and disposed of in the dog litter bins provided. Thank you to the dog walkers along Kilham Lane for using the new dog litter bin provided. News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School The Summer term has been busy as usual with many activities and events to enrich our

curriculum.

Class 5 Visit Austerfield

Field Study Centre

Class 5 visited Austerfield

Field Study Centre as part

of their geography and

science studies. In the

morning they learned about

the water cycle and the

importance of saving water

on our planet. They played a

water cycle game which

involved wearing hats with labels depicting various stages of the cycle. Pretend water had

to be delivered to the next person in the cycle and there was much hilarity when Queen

Victoria became part of the cycle and visited her royal lavatory! Next Class 5 went to the

quarry to create their own river system using containers of rain water which were poured

downhill. They watched the water travel over the waterfall, through the gorge, into the

valley then to the flood plain and onwards to the sea. After a break for lunch and the

important visit to the shop, Class 5 travelled to the River Idle where they measured the

rate of flow of the river using dog biscuits as „Pooh sticks.‟ (The fish later enjoyed a tasty

snack). The day was expertly led by the Austerfield staff and the children thoroughly

enjoyed their „hands on‟ learning experiences.

“Cinder – Ellie goes to the Hoe-Down”

Class 6 Drama Group presented their production of “Cinder – Ellie goes to the Hoe-Down” to

the whole school and invited adults. The story is the traditional tale of Cinderella but with a

Wild West twist. The children told the story through a combination of drama, singing and

dance. We had Ugly Sisters

Cactus and Grizzly with attitude,

cowboys, dancing girls, a very

smelly „Fairy Godmother‟, and

French and Red Indian narrators.

A twist at the end involving a spell

cast on Cinder-Ellie‟s boot meant

Yippers, the Buttons character,

was the one who won Cinder-Ellie‟s

hand in marriage. The children

performed brilliantly and looked

fantastic in their home created

costumes. Well done Drama Group!

Class R Visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Class R thoroughly enjoyed their recent visit

to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As well as

touring the park, Class R had an animal

handling session-which involved stroking a

snake and a bearded dragon. Class R

persuaded Mrs Crayton to be brave and take

part, so I have now stroked a snake! The

children showed great interest in the animals

and we were very impressed with the

children‟s knowledge as they looked around.

Children even got the opportunity to feed the

animals by hand (and yes, our anti-bacterial

hand wash was at the ready afterwards!!)

Class 4 Archery Day

As part of their project on Castles Class 4

had some surprise visitors to school, as you

can read in Scarlett‟s writing below:

When I walked into the classroom I got a big surprise as everyone was staring at two medieval people standing in our classroom, one was dressed like an archer and one like a knight. They started telling us about medieval weapons, and even showed us some. Later I got to wear the knight‟s armour! It‟s really heavy but I‟m happy I tried it on. After lunch we did some archery and everyone enjoyed it. It was a brilliant day at school. Scarlett, Class 4

Following the interest shown by the children during the Archery day,

we have now started a new Archery Club after school, to add to our

list of extra-curricular activities.

Thank You to the PTA!

Our Parent Teacher Association work very

hard to plan a varied range of enjoyable

activities throughout the school year. These

raise additional funds which are spent on

the children. The PTA have recently

the Class R and 1 play area and the children

are really enjoying using them as part of

their creative play.

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School

Our children have had a very busy and rewarding month with exciting and

educational visits out of school,

the Young Writers competition

and several fun and informative

visitors in school.

Years 1 & 2 visit to Conisborough

Castle

Years 1 & 2 enjoyed an historical visit to

Conisborough Castle and church as part of

their Take One Picture project. They were

given a tour around the castle and walked to

the church. Some of the children were

surprised to learn that the castle is over 800

years old (nearly as old as the teachers!!) In

the afternoon they had a great time dressing

up in medieval clothing and testing out old

fashioned forms of punishment, although the

teachers were not brave enough to try out

the stocks.

Year 1 Pedestrian Training

The Road Safety Education Unit joined

several parents and children from year 1 to

highlight pedestrian road safety. The

children donned high visibility jackets and

headed out on to Hayfield Lane. They were

shown how to cross the roads correctly,

finding safe places and looking both ways.

They were then taken to the pedestrian

crossing where they learned about the ‗Red Man‘ and the ‗Green Man‘. When they

returned to school, they excitedly shared

what they had learned with the rest of the

school.

Year 4 Cycle training

As many of our children now use their bikes

to cycle to school, we invited Bike It Tom

to school to give some of our pupils

valuable cycle training. They were taught

braking skills, the importance of wearing a

helmet and how to ride a bike safely and

considerately on the roads. They were also

given some tips on how to look after their

bikes.

Crucial Crew

A fantastic time was had by our year 6

children when they visited Magna. They took

part in the Crucial Crew workshop which is

run by the South Yorkshire Police. During

the afternoon they were involved in role

play where they had to act out scenarios

dealing with anti social behaviour, drugs

awareness and bullying. The children felt that

they had gained valuable skills and found it

very interesting and lots of fun to work with

the police.

Young Writers competition winners

We were very proud to learn this week that

several of our Key Stage 2 pupils have been

successful in the Young Writers latest

Creative Writing competition, fighting off

fierce competition from hundreds of schools

in the Yorkshire region. The children were asked to create a mini saga but could use no

more that 50 words. We had some

wonderful stories from all of our children

and they really let their imaginations run

wild. The winners were given a certificate

and their work will go in to a book entitled

Tiny Treasures Tales from Yorkshire, a copy

of which will be kept at the British library as

well as other libraries across the UK. Well

done to our budding novelists.

Cantley and Branton Cricket Club Update I have received several tit bits of information about the

Club. In the last Issue of the Arrow I printed a letter from Don Fox about it. According to Ronald Nutall

of Branton he remembers being asked to play occasionally as a young man of about 15 (about 1938) and

that the Cricket Ground in fact moved several times. He remembers it was initially in the field to the right

as you now cross the M18 Motorway Bridge heading to Doncaster, which in fact would have placed it

directly behind the former Primary School, where there is now a large new house on the traffic island

corner, as you turn to go into Old Cantley.

In later years it moved to a site about where the McCauley Catholic Senior School main building is now. It

later moved to another possible un-recollected site, and finally ended up opposite St Wilfrids Church

where Don Fox remembered it being. We still have no information about when it was formed or closed.

Ronald remembers some of the 1938 period team members as being Gerry Walls, Bill Tatham, Tom

Collins, Artie Binns, Frank Hamilton, Ken Bullock, Ted Badger and Frank Badger.

Since we now know the names of some

team members does anyone have any

old photos of the team of any period

that we could copy. I still have to get

back to a couple of people who have

more information.

The Workings of an Old Water

Mill

In an earlier issue of the Arrow I

discussed the strong possibility of there

having been a Water Mill on the west

bank of the River Torne south of the

Auckley Bridge, I have just come across

this image of a 17-18th Century Water

Mill, could our Mill have looked like

this?

Five tips to prepare your car for summer

Dear readers, After a long winter of wear and tear through snow, salt and potholes - and volcanic dust - your car will be

in need of a little TLC. Being prepared for the summer and making checks now can save you a lot of

money in the long run.

Try to deal with any minor problems and repairs as they happen, as they can become very expensive if left

to build up over time.

Here are five tips to prepare your car:

rusting if left on the bodywork. If possible take your car to a car wash that specializes in

under-car cleaning to get rid of every trace.

your car‟s pollen filter annually is a vital investment. Keeping your air-con well maintained will help, too.

-con will help your car smell better. If it smells stale when you turn the heating on, it could

well be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser.

headlamps when you stop for fuel is also important as

windscreen wipers won‟t get rid of all the fly debris.

leave marks on the windscreen, so

remember to replace them regularly. After the dust that

has fallen from the volcanic ash

cloud, it is particularly important that you clean them

regularly to avoid damaging your

windscreen.

Certain checks should be made regardless of the

season: Anti-freeze

contains corrosion inhibitors so you should keep

your car topped up with the right mixture all year

round; going without could lead to expensive

internal damage such as a blown head gasket.

Exterminate…

Exterminate…

Saturday nights in the 70‘s were usually spent hiding behind

the settee as the Daleks did battle with Dr Who. Sadly the

series came to an end, so imagine my delight when a new Dr

Who came to our screens years later. Now my own children

could hide behind the settee…they didn‘t! I also had a new

favourite Dr, move over Tom Baker, David Tenant is in

town! Then disaster struck, his time had come to an end

and I was genuinely sad. What would the new actor be like?

Why did it have to change? It won‘t be like it used to be! I

was angry, and determined not to turn on the TV and watch the new Dr!

Thinking about the time lord, I also began thinking about the Lord of Time – God. There was a song in the

60‘s by the Byrds with the line ―Turn, turn, turn‖ The words taken exactly from Ecclesiastes 3

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a

time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a

time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to

gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and

a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love

and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”

Could there really be a time for war, to kill, to hate? Surely our life is meant to be merciful, compassionate

and filled with love; these things do not make sense. How about a time to break down or weep? Shouldn‘t

we be rejoicing and building up? But, there are also inappropriate times for laughter and love. I think hu-

man beings often chosen the wrong times and reasons for many of these things. We fight over the wrong

causes, we love the wrong things, we keep things

that are corrupt and reject that which is eternal. We

break down relationships and weep over things with

no real value. We embrace that which will harm us

and cast away that which will make us better.

The chorus of the Byrds‘ song went, “To everything

(turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And

a time for every purpose, under heaven.‖ „Turn‟ is for me

the key word. I believe we need turn back to God,

learn how to discern His will and way so that we will

live as God would have us to live, experiencing things

at the appropriate time and in the appropriate place.

He does have a season and a purpose for everything,

and He will guide us in the right way.

P.S. I did „turn‟ the TV on, and I‟m very much enjoying
