Kilham Hall Our Tuesday morning Coffee Club got off to a fine

New Year's start on the 10th January, with an

excellent turn out and lots of enthusiasm for the

year ahead. New members are always welcome, so

if you are at a loose end on Tuesday mornings and

would like to meet people and have a chat over

tea/coffee and biscuits then please come and join

us.

We are 'open' from 10am until 11.30am and we

enjoy a game of Bingo, followed by our weekly

general knowledge quiz. We have a weekly poetry

reading, always humorous, and we finish with our

weekly Raffle. We are a lively group and you will

be made most welcome.

Please check the Kilham Hall timetable of weekly

events which you will find in the window of

Branton Post Office. We offer a selection of zumba

classes and an Art Group which is always on the

look out for new members. On Friday evenings

there is a Social Dance and all the times and dates

are listed on the timetable. If you have any queries,

however, you can always call into the Post Office

and speak to Barbara and Bev who are on the

Kilham Hall committee.

The new Tuesday night Pilates session is now

underway and offers something different if you

don't fancy zumba (or come along to both)! The

new Mums and Toddlers group is also up and

running on a Wednesday morning - 9.45am til

11.15am.

Kilham Hall is also available for weekend hire for

private functions. We have decided to offer a flat

yearly rate for the hire of the hall, as follows:

before 6pm, hire of the hall will be £14 per hour

after 6pm, hire of the hall will be £15 per hour, the

local community hall website, not run by the

Kilham Hall committee, has yet to reflect this.

If you are interested in booking the hall please

contact Bev Humphreys, our Booking Clerk, on

either 01302 532307 or mob: 07856221470. Bev

will be able to confirm prices, explain the

conditions of hire and take your booking. The

facilities are excellent; a spacious hall with plenty of

tables and chairs, modern kitchen and modern

cloakroom and the hall does have a music licence.

Come on and take advantage of our local

Community Centre!

Action for Auckley The officers of the Action for Auckley community

association, which has been dormant for several

years after conducting surveys and reporting on

the requirements of the residents, has decided that

the association should be wound up if the residents

agree. This decision was taken following unfruitful

approaches to other local voluntary groups with a

view to collaboration.

For that purpose and to comply with the

constitution we are calling a meeting of all

interested residents on 16th February 2012 at

7.30pm in Auckley Community Centre.

Would those intending to come please contact

Chris Gibson (770503) or John Helliwell (772571)

by 10th February so that we can gauge the room

requirements.

Thank you.

Finningley Village Community

Group - Future Events. A lot of people in the village have spoken to

members of the group saying how much they

enjoyed ―The Spirit Of Christmas‖ evening and

when are we going to do more such events.

As a group we were thrilled that people enjoyed it

so much and felt that the village had really come

together, one of our prime objectives, identified

and outlined in our Parish Plan of 2008.

Yes, Yes, Yes! We would love to do more. We

have ideas and projects BUT we really need many

more Finningley residents to become involved.

Such events take a lot of organising and although

we have a band of willing workers we really need

others to help share the load.

If you feel you could support such future village

ventures by giving of some time and energy and

want to find out more we would love to hear from

you.

We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in

Finningley Village Hall at 7-15p.m. We would love

to see you, or contact us on the following

Parish Precept For 2012/2013

The Parish Precept is the amount of money we ask Doncaster Council to collect on our behalf each year

and, apart from football fees, this is Council‘s only income for running costs. There has been no increase

in the precept this year, it remains at £28,000.

New Bus Shelter, Main Street

Technical problems have delayed the roof construction but we are pleased to report that the bus shelter

will be ready for use by the end of January.

Possible Youth Club

DMBC‘s Community Officer recently organised a survey among residents in certain areas of the Parish

and one recurring theme that emerged was the need for a youth club in Auckley village where teenagers

could congregate and play games, etc. If anyone is interested in helping to establish and run a youth club

please contact the Council Clerk, Mrs. M. Caygill, telephone: 01302 770922

A thriving youth club for children in school years 6, 7, 8 and 9 already exists and is held on Friday

evenings at the Adult Education Centre at Hayfield Lane, Auckley. Volunteers are always welcome. For

information please contact Mr. Geoff Payne on telephone: 01302 772659

Auckley Academy School News

Happy New Year from

everyone at Auckley

School. We hope you all

enjoyed the festive

period.

Cusworth Museum

Last term year 4 went on

an exciting trip to

Cusworth Hall to learn

more about the

Victorians. When they

arrived they went

straight to the classroom

where they got to try on

Victorian clothes and look

at various objects.

Georgia and Jay were

very lucky as they got to

try on expensive clothes

and really enjoyed posing

in them for the camera.

The children got to take

part in different activities; the one they most enjoyed was the old school room. They waited

anxiously outside to be called in by a very strict Mrs Evans who enthusiastically got into her

role as a strict school teacher. Once inside the children were given strict orders and

reminded of the importance of manners and good behaviour. They got to write on slates and

experience what life would have been like at school for a child in Victorian times. Another

activity allowed the children to experience home life in the Victorian era, they were told to

clean the range, polish shoes and dust ornaments and pans. They then got to beat the rugs

outside and discuss a Victorian child’s daily life at home. The final activity enabled the

children to really get into character by posing for a photograph in the photography studio.

They had to stand very still and not smile (which they found extremely difficult). The class

had a fantastic day and really enjoyed exploring Cusworth Hall, and are looking forward to

their next topic, the Tudors.

Sheffield Museum

Last term, children in year 6 (photo on p21) visited Sheffield museum. They were studying

the Ancient Greeks and took part in a workshop entitled ‘Offerings to Athena’. They learnt

about architecture and joined in with building a Parthenon replica in teams. They made a

Greek aulos, a musical instrument and dressed up in Greek clothing to process to the statue

of Athena and make offerings to her. A good time was had by all.

The Local

is Back

A warm welcome awaits you in

the heart of Auckley at the newly

refurbished Eagle and Child Public

House and Restaurant.

After some much needed attention, the new

landlords‘ Jason and Kay Fletcher from

Auckley and Rafe and Diane Lowe from

Branton, have brought the Eagle and Child

back to its former glory and it now looks as

good as ever!

This joint venture, undertaken by both

couples, stems from Jason and Rafe‘s

friendship and joint passion for The Eagle

and Child Pub!

Jason is an Auckley lad through and through,

he has lived in the village all his life other

than tours away during his 10 year career in

the Army. The pub has always been a part

of his life from his late teens. 'I looked

forward to the weekends in the pub when I

was home or on leave, socialising with

friends and with other locals‘, watching

sport, playing cards & doing Sunday

afternoon meat raffles after playing football

for Auckley on a Sunday morning. The

place had a really good village feel &

atmosphere when Danny & Margaret Byrne

had the pub, it was as though we were all a

big family and it‘s that feeling that we would

like to recreate. It's a great village & I hope

we can give the village the pub it deserves'.

Jason‘s wife Kay holds her own licence and

has lived in the village for 15 years and it

was in the Eagle & Child where she met

Jason. Kay worked in the pub for Danny &

Margaret and also up to its brief closure, so

she has seen both the good times and the

bad. ' We have kept as many of the original

staff as possible and I think I speak for all of

us when I say 99% of the time it's an

enjoyable place to work. Since we have

reopened it's been lovely to see so many

old faces come back into the pub who had

drifted away over the last few years. As it's

the only pub in the village, it‘s a good

meeting point & place to catch up on the

latest village news, we would love to see as

many of the villagers come and join us,

everyone‘s welcome'.

Rafe & Diane have lived in Branton for 16

years, having run his own successful

company ‗RJ Electricals‘ for many years,

Rafe‘s business experience and knowledge

will be key to the Eagle and Childs future

success. 'It was always a place I had

enjoyed coming to, but as everyone was

aware, the place looked tired & needed a

bit of TLC. Our main priority was to give it

the face lift it needed inside & out and we

invested in a new kitchen which enabled

the chefs‘ to create a new menu. We are

looking at making improvements to the

outside play area in the spring with some

new play equipment as well as a seating &

barbeque area which will enable us to

hold some family events throughout the

summer, weather permitting!‘

Positioned just off Doncaster Road, The

Eagle and Child is the perfect location for

commuters looking for a tasty home

cooked meal and refreshment or locals

looking for an evening out with friends. A

very warm welcome back to the locals‘

favourite!

Year 6 visit to Eden Camp

Last term our year 6 class went to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire as part of their

learning challenge, ‘Was it that bad to have lived through World War Two?’ Eden Camp

is an original World War two prisoner of war camp which was used to accommodate

Italian and German prisoners in 29 wooden huts. The huts are now used to re-create a

unique atmosphere using sights, sounds, smells and moving figures that makes it feel

like you have travelled back in time to wartime Britain. The children visited each hut

where they experienced The Blitz, Women at War, The Home Front and How Britain

Prepared. There is even a music hut where you can go and listen to wartime songs and

watch plays from that period. The children learnt a lot from this experience and found

it invaluable with their World War Two work.

Hayfield Lane Gardeners

Our Gardening Club entered a local school’s competition at the Countryside Live Show

in Harrogate. They had to produce a display to show off all their work for the year. All

the children worked very hard and were rewarded by winning second prize! They also

entered their carrots into the vegetable show and were awarded 3rd place against ex-

perienced growers!

Junior Civic Mayor Competition

Some of the year 6 children entered the com-

petition for Doncaster’s first Junior Civic

Mayor; the children had to write in no more

than 300 words why they would like to be the

Junior Civic Mayor. The winning pupil would

accompany the Civic Mayor on a number of

Civic and Young People’s events organised by

the council. We were really excited when we

received a letter to say that one of our pupils,

Anais had got a place in the top 24 and had

been invited to attend the Mansion House with

her family and class teacher Mrs Green. She

was then shortlisted into the final 10 where

she was presented with a certificate and goody bag. Although she wasn’t the winning

entrant, we are really proud of her and are sure that this was an exciting and memora-

ble experience for her. Well Done Anais!

Sad farewell to Mrs Lawson

Last term we had to bid a sad farewell to one of our members of staff. Mrs Lawson,

our Office Manager, who had been at the school for over 20 years decided to retire.

We wish her a very happy and restful retirement.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School

First Aiders’ Club

Many thanks to Mrs Houston, one of our parents, for running our fantastic First Aiders’

course. Mrs Houston uses her expertise from St John’s Ambulance to lead children through

a first aiders’ course and children who

successfully complete the course are given a

certificate to celebrate their success. In

the photographs below you can see children

practising CPR techniques.

Year 3 Greek Day

An Ancient Greek god and a priestess from

the Oracle at Delphi travelled through time

to visit Year 3 on Tuesday 17th January.

They came to tell Y3 the story of Perseus

and Medusa. The priestess of the Oracle

gave the children a message and sent them

on a quest! After the story telling, each of

the children made a puppet. There were

gods, kings, mortal men and women, athletes,

gorgons, monsters and heroes. Later in the

afternoon, they used the puppets to retell

the story to the Key Stage 1 children in a

puppet theatre with lights and sound

effects. We had a wonderful Ancient Greek

day.

Year 5 Tudor Day

On Wednesday 11th January, Class 5 had a

terrific Tudor day! Henry VIII came in to

school to tell us all about the Tudors. He

wore three Tudor outfits: One for

breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner.

He told us that he ate twenty courses all

together! Henry VIII told us this fact and

many other facts about his life, and we also

did lots of activities in the hall in the

morning. We made eagles’ wings out of paper

and made them fly, and we also did some

brass rubbings.

After lunch we got to write with a quill, like the Tudors did. We wrote on parchment, which

is the strongest paper in the world; we could not pull it apart but we could rip it. It was

really difficult to write with a quill but we managed to write and even draw some pictures.

Then Henry told us more

about Tudor England. We

learned that that he made 14

castles so that the French

could not invade England. All

in all, it was a very good day

and we all enjoyed it!

Expect the Unexpected

Well Christmas is now perhaps a distant memory, but I wonder what you received? Was it obvious

from the way it was wrapped? Or was that pair of socks, packet of bath salts, bottle of whatever,

cunningly disguised as something else? In life we can come across things that we think are obvious, but in doing so, we run the risk of sometimes missing something very special.

A young man was getting ready to graduate from University. For many months he had admired a

beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him

that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car.

Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told

him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his

son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the

box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angry, he

raised his voice to his father and said "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" and stormed out

of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and

wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He

had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a

telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He

needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search

through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago.

With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. And as he did, a car key dropped from

the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he

had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss something because they do not arrive exactly as we have expected?

Perhaps, we should try to look beyond what we

assume in people and situations, and look for the

unexpected surprises.

Blessings

Driving in Town

Dear readers, Denser traffic and more pedestrians make town and city driving far more intense than driving on the open

road.

Hazards are also likely to be concealed and there are more junctions and traffic lights etc to deal with.

The only way to cope safely with all these potential dangers is to concentrate intensely, spotting them

early and taking the appropriate measures to be prepared for them.

Local knowledge is particularly useful in town, but you should never let it lure you into a false sense of

security, as most accidents occur within five minutes of home, where drivers are most complacent.

Always position your car to achieve the best view ahead, using the information gained to ensure you‘re in

the right lane as early as possible.

Should you make a mistake that cannot easily be rectified with a U- turn, drive on as planned then turn

around, making your way back to the correct route.

Advanced observations in town helps you to spot many hazards and identify plenty of useful driving

information. Here are some important things to look for…

Parked cars can obscure hazards. As you pass them, choose a speed and road position that gives you

enough reaction time if, for example, a door is opening without warning or someone steps out,

Spot tell-tale signs that a car is about to pull out: angled wheels, exhaust smoke and illuminated tail-

lights etc.

Look out for pedestrians who are using traffic crossings incorrectly. Many start crossing when the

green man `bleeps` without even looking to see if any traffic is approaching. Also keep an eye out for `late

runners`, who will make a dash for it as your lights turn green.

Be aware of pedestrians near schools and pubs at key times, and near offices, stations etc at all times.

Give cyclists plenty of clearance as you pass them. Look out for them at junctions and always allow

them enough space to `wobble`.

Lorries and buses can obscure important road signs. Looking ahead for signs will minimise this

problem.

Delivery vans often park in awkward places, so take extra care when passing them. Remember to

look underneath them to spot the feet of pedestrians who may step out into the road unexpectedly.

Taxis may make unexpected manoeuvres (u-turns, sudden stops) when they spot a fare. Be prepared

for this when driving near railway stations and

shopping centres etc.

Above are to name just a few of the hazards the list

is endless.
