Editors Letter...
It was lovely to see Kilham Hall
community centre and the playing
fields buzzing with local people on
Saturday 18th June. This is what the
community centre is there for and to
see it used for such a worthwhile cause
only adds to the pleasure of having
such a facility within Branton. We have
lots of photographs in this months
issue, some of which were sent to me
from locals. Thank you very much.
The Auckley show is warming up for
it’s big day on Saturday 13th August.
Once again, this show seems to go
from strength to strength with good
support from the local community. This
months magazine has a centre page
pullout with the show’s schedule of
events as well as details from Neil
Woodward, the Chairman of the Show
with what we can expect from Auckley
Show 2011!
Don’t forget, you can view all of our
magazines going back to the end of last
year. If you can’t find a number or want
to look at back at an old issue log on to
our website at
www.arrowpublications.co.uk
The August issue deadline will be Wednesday 13th
July, if anyone would like to submit an article or an
advert, please send it to me by this date.
Best Wishes

Branton Fun Day was a great
success and was supported well
by many local people. It was the first
event of it’s kind since Kilham Hall Community
Centre opened. The organisers, Emma Gebbie,
Rachel Laycock and Lyndsey Parry, all live locally
and planned the event together to raise money for
the charities close to their hearts, Parkinsons and
MND (Motor Nuerone Disease).
Their efforts were rewarded with a grand sum
raised of £1632. There were many stalls to browse
around and the Arena
was used to the full
with gymnastics and
Dance Groups. It would
be great to see Branton
Playing fields used for
such events again in the
future. Well done ladies
for all your hard work,
worry and effort!
Fancy A game of Cricket? In
Branton, Cantley and Finningly we have 3 cricket
pitches but no team. I play for a team but as I’m
new, I rarely get a chance to do anything, but I love
the game!
I’m sure there are plenty of amateur cricket
fanatics in our villages but they are either put off by
some of the clubs attitude to new players and the
formalities of the game. I want to start a small 5 a
side cricket tournament for the people of our
villages. I want the event to be families, old and
young a like from ages 10-110!
My captain is always saying that at our level cricket
is dying but I believe that the sport is in fact very
popular but people are being put off by certain
attitudes! So, for all amateur cricket fanatics in our
villages., I am trying to organize weekly (every
Saturday) 5 aside cricket tournament. For the love
of the game for all ages from 10-110 and talents.

Having found his advertisement in The Arrow. He
arrived exactly on time gave us a very reasonable
quote and carried out the work with first class
materials and stayed until it was completed, took
away
all rubbish, and did an excellent tidying up job. We
were delighted with his professionalism and

I would like to nominate my neighbours,
Louise and George Hopewell from Auckley.
They kindly took myself, my son and his girlfriend in following a mains
electricity fire in our house. Both Louise & George stayed up into the early
hours to keep me company while the electric board came to make everything
safe, Louise made beds for us all just in case we could not return home.
I would also like to mention how wonderful the fire crews were who attended. They
were very caring and reassuring. Andrea Colquitt

It has been nearly two years since Flying Start
Day Nursery was rebuilt and we are very pleased and
proud of our state of the art purpose built Nursery which has large play areas, a sensory garden, vegetable garden, living willow den, Early Excellence furniture and resources, separate sleep rooms, large
indoor play area, easy parking, CCTV and secure entry using biometrics.
It has been a very busy Spring out in the garden planting all the vegetables and watching the willow den sprout into life, which has been of great interest to the children, we are looking forward to
harvesting and eating our own vegetables. The light airy canopy allows free flow indoor/outdoor play in all weathers and the babies have their own garden and wooden shelter.
One of the highlights this Spring was a trip to our sister Nursery based on Coneygarth Farm, Haxey, the pre-school children were taken there to see the newly born lambs, they especially enjoyed riding in Martin's
Landrover Defender! At the farm as well as the sheep and lambs the children watched the Lincoln Red Cows, paid a visit to the resident hens, looked at the dogs and went for a walk in the nursery wood.
In the holidays we cater for the 5-11year olds with our exciting
holiday club (8am - 6pm). All the children need to be at Flying Start by 9am and they are transported to Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery where they always have an action packed and fun filled day.
If you are interested in either Nursery places or Holiday Club (5-11yrs) do not hesitate to contact us and arrange a visit ALSO don't
forget we offer 15 HOURS FLEXIBLE FREE provision for 3-5 year olds. For more details please contact 01302 802070.

Branton Funday was a great success. The organisers, Rachel, Emma and Lyndsey raised a grand total
of £1632 which will be split between Parkinson's and MND and would like to thank everyone who helped
raise this money by coming along and supporting the event. Also, they would like to say a special thank
you to the volunteers on the stalls, the stalls who donated some of their profits, all the fantastic busi-
nesses who donated raffle prizes and to Branton football club who did a raffle in the Three Horse Shoes
and donated the proceeds.

Class 2 Visit to Austerfield Study Centre Class 2 went on a visit to Austerfield Study Centre.
When we got there we learned how to take care of plants. First we learned about parts of a plant,
like the root, stem and leaves. Then we went outside to play “Sam‟s Game” and we made a tree of
children. Some children were the trunk, some were branches, leaves, flowers and roots. The
teachers had to be the bees! Next we went to Christmas Tree Woods and we looked for the robin.
We had a magnifying glass and a magic eye to look at the trees. Finally we had a mini-beast hunt.
We had a brush and spoon so we could catch the mini-beasts and put them in our container. We
looked at them, then ticked them on our list. I enjoyed my day at Austerfield. By Anouk
Jubilate Club News ‘Jubilate‟, our after school worship group have recorded their first ever CD!
The children had a wonderful time and worked very hard, and with the help of a recording
technician have produced a CD containing thirteen of their favourite worship songs. We are selling
copies of the CD for £7.99 and any profits will be shared between the „Rays of Sunshine‟ and the
„Rhys Daniels Trust‟ in memory of Harry, a special little boy at our school. If anyone would like to
buy a copy of 32 enthusiastic children singing their favourite hymns, please send a cheque for
£7.99, made payable to „St Wilfrid‟s School Fund‟ to: Mrs S Dilks, Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E.
Primary School, Valley Drive, Branton, Doncaster, DN3 3NB Thank you, on behalf of the children of ‘Jubilate’.
Year 6 Church Visits We have developed a friendship school link with Denaby Main Primary
School. The children in both Year 6 classes have a pen pal partner whom they write to and send
emails. The children have taken part in many joint activities including a talent show, craft day etc.
and in May children showed their pen pals their local area and visited their local church.
The children from
Branton St
Wilfrid‟s C.E.
Primary were shown
the Miners‟ Chapel
by their Denaby
friends. The
winding wheel is an
impressive symbol
of Denaby Main‟s
mining history.

Year 4 Visit to Conisbrough Castle At Conisbrough Castle we had lots of fun. First we went
through the Barbican and gatehouse. Next we went in the Bai-
ley, on the grass we smelt
some smelly cubes of
medieval smells. Then we
went into the Keep and
the guide showed us all
the rooms. We went to
the top of Keep.
After lunch we did a
drawing of the Castle.
Finally we did a fun
search of where the
buildings were in the
first place.

Medieval Arms and Ar-
mour For our work about Medieval Castles, Jim (Sir Laugh-a
-lot) and Alan (a bowman) came to talk to us about the
weapons and armour used in Medieval times. They showed
us some weapons and some armour.
Archery In the afternoon we had a go at Archery, a sport
that has developed from the use of medieval weapons.
Class 1 Visit to The Deep As part of our topic about wa-
ter, Class 1 went to The Deep to find out about animals that
live under the water. Our workshop session was called „Lost
at Sea‟ where we had to find out where different creatures
lived. Below is Joshua‟s recount of our school trip:
„Class 1 went to The Deep on the 7th of June. First we went
on the coach. It took a long time. Then we explored The
Deep. I saw a shark. Then we watched a 3D film about a
shark. Then we had our dinner. I had four sandwiches. I
liked it when we went up in the lift. It was a good day.’
Joshua
We all had a great day and enjoyed looking round The Deep.

First a few words about last year and a big thank you on behalf of all
the committee for everyone’s support. Once again we declared the Show a success, a
damp start turned out to be fantastic sunshine by lunchtime, which in turn produced a
record turn out.
All the events were well attended and the evening was a sell out. Entries in the horticultural and produce show were up yet again with some excellent exhibits. We have introduced some new classes for this year. Check out the schedule to see what you will be entering this year.

We started Gardening Club at
Hayfield Lane Primary School in
September and have had so much
fun!
The garden was created in 2010 from an
overgrown piece of land which wasn’t being used
and now has 9 raised beds for us to grow fruit and
vegetables. We didn’t have many tools so we sent
out an appeal to our parents and were
overwhelmed with all of the wonderful things they
sent in for us! There are 2 representatives from
each class who meet every week to look after the
garden. We started sowing seeds early in Spring
and now our garden is almost full. We are growing
peas, beans, potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes and
lots of other exciting fruit and vegetables.
Everyone is getting involved, with our Caretakers
and Cleaners keeping everything watered in the
holidays. It’s not just the children who are enjoying
the crops; we have had to make a bird-scarer from
old CDs as the pigeons are finding our peas quite
tasty! We are very proud of our lovely garden and
can’t wait to see what will be ready to harvest
next!

Traffic Lights
Dear Readers, When approaching traffic lights, stop at or just before the stop line and then apply the hand brake and
select neutral. Never pull up to close behind other traffic at lights, leave yourself enough room and always
stop your vehicle so that you can see the rear tyres of the vehicle in front on the tarmac. By doing this
you’re able to manoeuvre around them should they stall or breakdown and if an approaching emergency
vehicle wants to pass you will have the room to get out of the way,
At the lights, try to keep an eye on the lights controlling the other routes. As soon as they turn amber,
consider selecting first gear and prepare to release the handbrake as your lights should go to green in the
next few seconds.
If you can’t see the other lights, look for signs of the traffic slowing as their lights go to red. Use this an-
ticipation to your advantage but never move off before your lights turn green. This advanced observation
at traffic lights can speed up your progress. Look ahead and if there are several lanes choose the lane of
least ‘resistance’- the one with less traffic in it or the one without the slow- moving lorry or bus. Often
the inside lane is empty which not only gives you a clear run, but also means you won’t get held up by
other traffic that will have to stop to turn right.
Observe the traffic you can see beyond the lights. Often lanes will merge.
Aim for the lane that lets you make the best progress.
Time your arrival at traffic lights when they are green. If you see a red light ahead, lift off the accelerator
to delay your arrival instead of ‘steaming’ up to the light and having to brake firmly and change gears.
Always be aware of drivers running red lights, also keep an eye out for the peddle cyclist who ignores the
red as this trait is increasingly common on today’s crowded roads.
Making well- timed intelligent and planned progress on busy roads is a uniquely satisfying experience-
especially when you slip effortlessly pass the high-revving, push-in-at-any-cost driver who rocketed by you
moments earlier only to end up in the wrong lane at the traffic lights.

Olympic Prelude
Just 12 months from now, in July 2012, we will be witnessing the opening ceremony of the Olympic
Games in London, and I wonder what it will be like...
Synchronised black cab hailing followed by a ‘fly past’ of London Routemaster busses and rounded off with a
London Underground strike? Or, perhaps Boris Johnson and David Beckham singing Land of Hope and Glory
accompanied by the mass bands of the UK brush and comb band?
Of course I jest, but whatever happens at the Olympics in 2012, Great Britain will be at the very centre of
the world’s attention for two weeks or so.
Were you allocated tickets to any events? I discovered that I’d been successful. Imagine my delight when I
found out I had tickets to the 100 meters! Better still, trackside, and for the final!! Of course Vicars
shouldn’t boast, we should be humble, but this is the final of the 100 meters, a once in a life time
opportunity to see the final of the 100 meters...three legged race!!! I think I applied for the wrong games.
Oops!
On a serious note though, one of the aspects of the Olympics that I find encouraging is the apparent unity.
The games bring people from all over the world together, and nationality, race, creed, background, rich,
poor...none of these matter. The differences that at times have divided now bring together, and that has to
be good.
The Olympic Creed, written for a service at the 1908 games, and displayed throughout the games today
reads, "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important
thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought
well."
The Olympics should remind us that we are all members of the human race, made in, I believe, the image
of God. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the unity we witness for those two weeks, and the sentiment contained
in the Olympic Creed became the norm – right to the end of the human race?
Regardless of your religious outlook, there is a
wonderful moral message contained in the Olympics.
We can all play a part in some way in living that out.
If you believe, then pray too that it might continue.
If you have tickets, then enjoy the event. If you don’t,
then we’re told that there will be a second chance
soon, so have another go.
Finally...can I interest anyone in a ticket for the three
legged race final?
Blessings
Revd. Neil Redeyoff
