Editor’s Letter

Do you think we made it? Did

we really get away with ‘that’

winter?? I hope so, fingers

crossed I am not tempting fate!

Last month we featured the new look ‗Eagle and

Child‘ which has moved seamlessly back into the

hearts of locals. This month, we have another

local pub to celebrate, The Harvey Arms in

Finningley has recently undergone a major

refurbishment bringing it bang up to date with

how we dine and relax today.

It is so refreshing to have these much loved

public houses brought back to life when so

many are closing down. Villages need these hubs

to help keep communities close, so be sure to

support yours when you can!

The Diamond Jubilee may be a few months away

now but already plans are taking shape. Kilham

Hall have planned a Diamond Jubilee party to

celebrate the occasion and we have a local

celebrity who will be involved in the main event!

‗Broad Ambition‘, part owned by Charlie Griffin

(Auckley) and Howard Griffin (Finningley) will

take part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee

Pageant on Sunday 3rd June! You can read all

about it in this month‘s issue.

‘The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday

21st March. If you need to book space for

community events and have not done so before,

please let me know as early as possible so I can

confirm we have the space. The April issue will

be distributed from Friday 30th March.

A date for your diaries... Sunday 18th March,

Mother‘s Day, if you are planning to take your

Mum/Wife out for lunch, book early!

Happy Mother’s Day to

Mothers’ everywhere!

St Wilfrid’s School Head

Teacher prepares to say

Farewell. Head Teacher, Mrs Crayton will be leaving St

Wilfrid‘s school to take up another opportunity

after the Easter break. Mrs Crayton has been the

Head at the school for fourteen years and will be

sadly missed by staff, children and parents alike.

Mrs Crayton has a message for the Arrow readers.

After fourteen very happy years at Branton St Wilfrid’s

C.E. Primary School I will be leaving at Easter to take

up a new Headship post. I am looking forward to the

new challenges ahead, but will certainly miss everyone

at Branton St Wilfrid’s. Branton is such a special school

and this is due to our distinctive Christian school family

ethos, our hardworking and dedicated staffing team

and governors, supportive parents and of course our

wonderful children! For the Summer term our school

will be under the capable leadership of Mrs Barnes

who will be Acting Head teacher. I look forward to

hearing about Branton St Wilfrid’s many successes in

the future.

Very best wishes,

E.A. Crayton

Kilham Hall We are delighted to be able to say that Kilham Hall

is busy and all the weekly events are very well

attended. The new Pilates class on a Tuesday

evening is proving to be very popular. There is a

good weekly attendance and an excellent mix of

ages taking part. If you are still thinking about

Pilates, it costs £4 per session, you do not need to

provide any equipment -Debbie provides the mats

and balls - and you simply need loose, comfortable

clothing. Tuesday evenings, 7.30pm-8.30pm.

Beginners are welcome as you work at your own

personal level and Debbie always gives you options.

The new Mums and Toddlers group is also proving

popular on a Wednesday morning and we are

hoping that it will become an established, weekly

feature so to all mums with young toddlers out

there, please recommend it to others and do come

along. 9.45am - 11.15am and Simone will be

pleased to hear from you on 01302 771101 if you

have any questions or just come along on the day.

Weekend bookings for private functions are

especially popular and we are so pleased that

people are using the Hall for personal celebrations.

A word of advice, February and March weekends

are already very much booked up and bookings

have even been taken for September! So please

don't wait until the last minute to make your Hall

reservation. Booking reservations to Bev on

07856221470.

Tuesday July 12th, Tuesday Coffee Club is going to

have its own special Diamond Jubilee celebratory

morning. Having asked members for their

preference, it has been decided to have a Pie and

Pea lunch which is always very popular and there

will be patriotic community singing as well as the

usual bingo and quiz, of course. Further details to

follow.

Finally, make a note in your diary of Tuesday June

5th - the Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday. An

afternoon of Diamond Jubilee fun and games is to

be organised for local children at Kilham Hall.

More details to follow, so watch this space!

The Queens Jubilee

Thames Pageant

‘Broad Ambition’ confirmed to take

part in the Thames Diamond

Jubilee Pageant

The afternoon of Sunday 3rd June will see a

thousand boats gather on the river Thames in

celebration of the Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee. It will

be the largest flotilla in modern times on the river

with rowing boats, working boats and pleasure

vessels of all shapes and sizes beautifully dressed

with streamers and Union Jacks, stretching for an

estimated twelve and a half miles.

It has proved extremely popular with three boats

applying for every place. The pageant organisers

and representatives from the river community

were involved in the selection process which

included considering safety, fitness-for-purpose and

range of vessel type as well as exploring whether

the vessel was of historical significance or had an

interesting story to tell. At the end of 2011,

organisers confirmed to applicants the lucky boats

who will take part in this historic event.

Broad Ambition‘ owned by four friends and

crewed by a party of ten is delighted to have been

selected to take part in the Thames Diamond

Jubilee Pageant. ‗Broad Ambition‘ is one of the

motor boats which will be travelling in the flotilla.

Every vessel will proudly take its place in the flotilla

alongside Her Majesty the Queen and other

members of the Royal Family aboard the Royal

Barge, The Spirit of Chartwell. It will be a once in a

lifetime moment for all of us aboard ‗Broad

Ambition as part of this glorious moment in our

rich royal history.

2012/13 Annual Precept After careful consideration the parish council determined that the annual precept for

2012/13 should be increased by £2,400 to cover all households in the parish which is an

average of £1.67 per household per year. No increase has been levied for the past two

years. This will ensure that the parish facilities continue to be maintained to a high

standard for the benefit of residents.

Basketball Facilities The installation of a basketball at the hard standing area to the rear of the ball wall is now

complete for the enjoyment of young people.

Dog Fouling – Please Clean It Up The instances of dog fouling particularly on Kilham Lane are still apparent spite of

previous requests. All dog owners are asked to ensure that when dogs foul any public

area it is collected, wrapped and disposed of in the litter bins provided. Please also

remember that dog fouling on pavements and grassed areas creates a serious health and

safety risk particularly to children.

Detecting Speeding Vehicles The Safer Neighbourhood Team continue to operate the speed detection equipment in

and around the parish particularly on Doncaster Road and Whiphill Top Lane in order to

ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Parking on Grass Verges Residents are asked to refrain from regularly parking on the grass verges as the

appearance of a number of the verges along Doncaster Road and Chapel Lane is being

spoilt.

Christmas Carol Singing Thank you to all the residents who again attended the very enjoyable Christmas Carol

Singing event at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 14 December which was specially attended by

Father Christmas. If anyone wishes to give feedback or has ideas for this year‘s event

please notify the Clerk to the Council.

Provision of a Skip Following a request by the Parish Council a skip is to be provided by DMBC on Saturday

24 March 2012 between 10.00a.m. - 2.00 p.m. at the bottom of Valley Drive.

Runners from across the country and even beyond

will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as

the town will be hosting its first mass running

event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster

10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see

people taking part in a 10k which will start and

finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the

Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from

across the UK and even runners from abroad. A

Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the

event, with teams of 3 or more employees from

the same firm competing to win the Corporate

Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community

Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families,

with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles

said ―We are delighted to be working with the

council to bring this event to Doncaster. The

response has been tremendous since we opened

entries last week. We had hundreds of people

register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming

from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from

the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the

event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year

for sport in UK and this event is for everyone‖.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for

Communities said: ―The event promises something

for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more

competitive races - each taking in some of the

wonderful open spaces that we have in

Doncaster.‖

The event has attracted sponsorship from global

sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager

Mike East was delighted to come on board as title

sponsor for the event for the next two years ―We

have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the

North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill

exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well

as the seasoned athlete and it‘s great that it is in a

place as accessible as Doncaster‖.

Entry to the event is £18 for UKA Members and

£20 for standard entry. Fun Run entries cost £8.

Online registration for both the Run Doncaster

10k and the Community Challenge Fun Run is

It’s Freezing in Foundation!

We‘re not just turning the heating down to save money......

In our recent cold snap and snowy weather our foundation stage 2 children have been adding to their

topic on Polar Region by building their own igloo. Miss Waszak and the children went out to enjoy the

snow and gather new experiences when it struck them that all the research they have being doing about

the arctic and the Inuit people could be put to excellent use in constructing a replica of an Eskimo house.

They used school draws to pack snow into rectangular blocks which they then built up in layers. All the

pupils spent time in the structure and had a fantastic time.

Year 1 at Natureland

Year 1 have been undertaking a

great deal of work on animals and

plants from the rainforest in their

recent ‗Looking After Our future‘

topic in school. As a result the

children went on a school visit to

Natureland near Skegness. An

8.00am early start for the children

ensured they got a good day at

the animal reserve and pupils

were not disappointed with

chances to stroke lizards, croco-

dile eggs waiting to hatch and see

seals being fed. Pupils returned

full of enthusiasm and with real

expert knowledge about animals

in our world and how to care for

them.

A Dahlicious Day in Year 3 and 4.

Year 3 and 4 in Mrs Middlebrooks class have been

studying the works of Roald Dahl this half term and

on their journey to becoming awesome authors

they decided to have a dress up day as any one of

Mr Dahl‘s characters. The levels of initiative and

inventiveness displayed by pupils and parents was

excellent. A full range of costumes walked through

school‘s doors on the last Wednesday of half term.

Mrs Middlebrook got to teach Willy Wonka, Mr

Twit, Mike TV, Matilda and a whole host of others.

Pupils chose their favourite book by Roald and

created their own work in the style of it so school

got excellent English from a fantastic event.

A Spring Home for Mr Hedgehog!

Year 5 and 6 have been cutting and sawing like

there‘s no tomorrow this half term. After surviving

the stress of mid year SATs test Mrs Booth and her

pupils decided to get the wild area ready for spring

by providing new homes for the numerous

hedgehogs‘ we get around school. The children

spent a great deal of time researching the size,

shape, weight and feeding habits of hedgehogs before they started to gather materials for the big build.

Mrs Marbrow came armed with power tools and saws came to help on several afternoons and the

children set about creating wonderful woodland homes.

The Harvey Arm’s are wide open As you step into the newly

refurbished Harvey Arm’s in

Finningley, a warm, hugging

welcome awaits you. With open

roaring fires, comfy sofa‘s and spacious dining

areas, the new look Harvey Arms has moved

forward with the times, but still maintained it‘s

traditional village pub atmosphere.

New owners, Warren and Sandy Kennedy who

have been at the Harvey Arms since early last

year, were quite happy running the very

successful White Hart in Wadworth where they

have been for the last 3 years. The brewery

approached them and asked them to take a look

at the Harvey Arms. Although they did not

have plans for another pub at the time, they

decided to take a look. Thankfully, they fell in

love with both the pub and the village of

Finningley! Sandy says ‗As soon as we saw the

Harvey, we fell in love with it, we loved the

village atmosphere and the setting with the duck

pond and roaming peacocks. The pub looked

tired and in need of some improvements, we

also knew that the pub had loyal customers who

had been eating and drinking here for years so

the refurbishment was well deserved. The

locals are really friendly and have welcomed us

to the village; they love

what we have done to the place and now have a

local to be proud of.‘ The refurbishment has

opened up the pub and dining area by knocking

down an internal wall which separated the two.

Comfortable sofas and adequate eating areas

arranged throughout the pub create a really

relaxed dining experience. The ladies can all

now take a much needed sigh of relief at the

luxurious new toilet facilities which are a vast

improvement to the old!

Sandy and Warren have more plans for the

future, they hope to provide a new beer garden

for the summer where customers can eat and

drink outside. Warren say‘s ‗We want to

create somewhere nice where our customers

can come and relax with friends and enjoy the

early evening sun, after a long day at work‘.

The Harvey Arm‘s serves a range of cask ales

and fine wines and offers food throughout the

week. There is a new menu featuring old

favourites and some new comers. Sunday lunch

is served as usual but proving to be very popular

so it is important to book ahead to avoid

disappointment.

One thing is for sure, a visit to the Harvey

Arm‘s will not disappoint you, This village pub

has been transformed and a truly warm

welcome awaits old customers and new.

Healthy Cafe At the end of last term,

Year 5 opened a Healthy Cafe, to

celebrate their work on healthy

eating. Their homework task was to

make a healthy snack which could be

served in the cafe. Everyone worked

so hard and there were some very

tasty dishes on offer. At school, they

designed games about keeping healthy

to show their learning to the other

children. They invited the whole-

school along, as well as their parents.

They loved trying the food and playing

the games and learnt that being

healthy can be fun.

National Farmhouse Breakfast Week

Year 4 visited the Ramada Encore

Hotel in Auckley to learn about the

importance of having breakfast, this

was part of the „National Farmhouse

Breakfast week.‟ Whilst at the

Ramada the children took part in the

„breakfast pot challenge‟ the challenge

was to make the

healthiest breakfast

possible whilst only

using four ingredients,

once the challenge was

completed the children

then enjoyed eating

their breakfast

creations. During the

visit the children met

two members of the

Doncaster Rovers

Belles and two children

were lucky enough to

win family season

tickets to watch them

play.

Year 1 As part of their learning challenge “What were granddad and grandma‟s toys like?”

our year 1 children visited Cusworth Hall to look at toys from many years ago. They played

with spinning tops, marbles, skipping ropes, wind up toys and kaleidoscopes. Whilst there the

children dressed up in Victorian clothes and went into a Victorian classroom and washroom

to experience what life was like back then. They then went to a Toys R Us store to look at

toys that are available today paying particular attention to what materials the toys were

made from.

Also some of the

children‟s grandpar-

ents came into

school to take part

in a Wii challenge.

The children had

great fun challeng-

ing the grandpar-

ents and were very

surprised with their

computer skills. All

the children and

grandparents thor-

oughly enjoyed the

experience and look

forward to a re-

match in the not too

distant future.

Aztecs Vs Greeks This term Year 5 have

been answering the Learning Challenge, Who

Were Greater: The Aztecs or The Greeks?

The class was split in two, with half

representing the Aztecs and half

representing the Greeks. The first challenge

was to design and make a costume for

homework and to wear it on Aztec Vs Greek

day. Everyone worked so hard on this, with

amazing results. During the day they

researched Greek and Aztec temples, in

order to make a model. Their other Learning

Challenges have covered different areas

such as warfare, inventions and Gods. One of

the things they most enjoyed was filming

their own versions of The One Show, where

they interviewed a Greek soldier or an

Aztec warrior. They are just coming to the

end their Learning Challenge when they will

be able to use all their knowledge in a

debate about who were the greatest.

News From Branton St Wilfrid‟s Primary School Fun in the Snow!

As our first heavy snow

of the winter fell, our

very creative children

had fun during playtimes

building a series of snow

sculptures, from walls to

igloos to ice dens with

built in seating!

THE ASTROSPHERE

On Wednesday 2nd

February, Class 5 and

Class 6 went in the

Astrosphere to learn

about the planets, stars

and different things that

are floating around in

space! First we talked

about how the Earth

moves around the Sun, and then the man who owns the Astrosphere showed us what the sky

looks like at night! We looked at the different stars and talked about the constellations we

can see, and how they got their names.

Next, we watched videos about the planets in the solar system, and learnt what they are

like. We found out that Jupiter spins on its side, which makes it different to the other

planets that we know of. So, all in all, we had a great time and Class 5 cannot wait until next

year to see it again. By Joseph Sidebottom and Henry Cutts, in Class 5.

A Visit by Sir William Petty

Class 2 spent the day in the company

of Sir William Petty, a close friend of

Samuel Pepys, as part of our studies

about the Great Fire of London.

During the day we heard the story of

how the fire started, how it spread,

and how the people used bucket

chains to try to extinguish the

flames. We acted out the spread of

the fire from building to building and

the attempts to put it out. We then

created a new map of London by

drawing our ideas to put before the

King. To complete our day we drew

portraits of Sir William.

Sportshall Athletics Tournament The annual Pyramid Indoor Athletics tournament took

place at the Hayfield School on Wednesday 25th February. It was a well attended event

with girls and boys from four of the pyramid schools attending. St. Wilfrid‟s School took 10

girls and 10 boys from Year 6 to the event. They were

invited to take part in field and track events. The field

events included indoor javelin, sitting ball throw, vertical

jump, standing long jump and speed bounce. The track

events were 1 and 2 lap sprints, 1 and 2 lap hurdles and

relays.

It was an exciting evening, with lots of cheering and

team spirit. Some children were presented with

individual certificates for demonstrating Olympic values

such as respect, determination and friendship. But the

main event was the winner of the team trophy for the

school with the most points. We were very excited when

our school name was announced as the winner! Well done

Year 6 team.

We look forward to sharing more of our school news next

month.

Best Wishes

Eggstra Special Event at

Auckley Wow! What

happened at Auckley

School? Mysterious eggs

– giant ones, appeared on

the school field. They

were huge, three of them

complete with nest. The

staff were puzzled!

What on earth could they

be? Immediately the

police were called in! An

emergency assembly was

held and police, along with

children, investigated the

area for clues. Other

visitors quickly came to

investigate too.

Community officers, and special guest journalists and scientists! “Our week had to be

totally changed” said Mrs Evans, Headteacher.

Children quickly set to work writing their news reports about the incident. Some children

thought they were alien eggs, others dinosaurs and Chinese dragons.

Lots of drama took place as children became news reporters and journalists. Throughout

the week our work in school revolved around our „mysterious eggs‟. Poetry, dance work, fact

finding, art, sculpture and story writing were all undertaken with great excitement.

And where are they now? “I wish I knew!” said Mrs Evans. “Three schools have contacted

me to ask if they could borrow them. Unfortunately the last I knew they were being

investigated by scientists. They were

amazing, totally out of this world – it‟s

true! Well at least it was in the hearts

and minds of the children at Auckley

school.”

St John Ambulance If you are injured

when you at school you are in safe hands

as Year 3, 4 and 5 have all taken part in

first aid training by St John Ambulance.

They learnt how to check the area is safe

and what to do in an emergency. Well

done to all the children on gaining your

certificates.

Leeds Art Gallery Following on from

arts week, Year 1 have been to visit

Leeds Art Gallery. They looked at

different pieces of art and discussed

what story they might be telling. They

children explored the gallery, looking at

paintings and sculptures, and decided

which pieces they liked the most. In the

afternoon, the children had the

opportunity to look at two sculptures in

more detail. They had to decide what

the sculptures were doing and thinking

and finally they had to draw the sculpture. All the children enjoyed the experience and

learnt a lot about looking at and enjoying art.

Holocaust Service Children from Auckley School attended the Holocaust service at

Doncaster Museum on Friday 27th January. The children read out poems they had written in

front of an audience which included the mayor, Peter Davies, the Civic Mayor and members

of parliament Caroline Flint and Rosie Winterton.

Yamaha Music sessions We have been very lucky to have a visit from the Yamaha Music

Point who played their electric guitars for us. Some of the children were even able to try

playing the electric guitars themselves.

Little Fidgets Languages for Children

Launches in Doncaster!

Local linguist, Hayley Kirkby, is launching a new

business called Little Fidgets, teaching French and

Spanish to children from 2 to 11 years of

age. Hayley is a fluent French and Spanish speaker

and has spent four years working as cabin crew

from Doncaster Airport travelling to destinations

like France, Spain, Switzerland, Mexico and the

Dominican Republic. Hayley loved the opportuni-

ties her airline job gave her and now she wants to

share her language skills with children by running

Little Fidgets classes.

31 million Brits visit France or Spain each year and

lots of families want their children to benefit from

the advantages of starting languages young when

children‘s brains soak up new words like sponges. Research has also shown that early language learning

can reduce the risk of getting dementia in old age. According to a recent announcement from the British

Council, ‗languages are essential to our children‘s future if they are to survive in the global economy.‘

Hayley will be launching her new classes, ‗French for Fidgets‘ and ‗Spanish for Fidgets‘ in Doncaster, Baw-

try and Retford and in surrounding villages. Classes will include puppets, songs, games, role play and

snacks, with the children using all the 5 senses as

much as possible. Hayley will be running classes for 2

-4 year olds in church halls, she‘ll be running classes

in nurseries and playgroups and she‘s also planning

some after-school classes to be held in local primary

schools.

‗I want to show people that learning languages is

really easy if you start young‘, said

Hayley. ‗Languages are so much easier when you

start young and children can copy accents instantly.‘

If you want to join a class or find out more give

Hayley a call on 01302 461 123 or visit

Community Feel

I was speaking to a wedding couple the other week, and explaining that part of the process of getting

married is to have your ‗banns‘ called in church.

My understanding is that this goes back hundreds of years to when people in communities knew one an-

other quite well. So, the local Parson would stand in church on a Sunday and say something like:

―I PUBLISH the Banns of Marriage between M. of _____ and N. of _____. If any of you know cause, or

just impediment, why these two persons should not be joined together in holy Matrimony, ye are to de-

clare it. This is the first [second, or third] time of asking‖

The idea being that someone in the village might say, ―Hang on, John is already married to Eliza, so he

can‘t marry Mary.‖ or, ―Aren‘t they related already?‖ or, ―She‘s below the age of consent!‖ In those days

the community was close knit, with folk knowing one another‘s business far more than we do today.

However, I‘ve noticed that with some couples now they don‘t know who their neighbour is, never mind

anything about them. Why? Because of increased mobility. Many villages and new estates are simply places

where people sleep. They get up, leave the house, shut the door, get in the car, and drive to work and the

process is reversed later in the day. In addition, there are fewer local shops as people travel for out of

town shopping, so little chance to catch up on local news in the corner shop. Then, when weekend ar-

rives, we travel to see family and friends, or spend time in our gardens with our 6 foot fences, so no

chance (unless you‘re as tall as me) of chatting over the garden fence! So, it seems that as time goes by

‗community‘ might become a thing of the past.

In our villages there is still, to a degree, a ‗community feel‘ but I do hear people saying that it appears to be

diminishing. The answer?

Well, from my perspective

Jesus said, ―Love your

neighbour as yourself.‖ Now

that would transform things!

Blessings

Road Surfaces

Dear readers,

Urban roads can be more slippery than country roads as the coating of oil and rubber on the streets

becomes more polished by the constant traffic,

Take care in dry weather but remember that a light shower (especially on a hot day) is likely to

make road surfaces especially hazardous. Look for oil spills on the road in places where cars stop

regularly (junctions, traffic lights etc). Unfortunately, grip is often reduced where it is most essential.

High friction compounds (like shell grip) are applied to road surfaces near hazards and accident

blackspots (roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights etc). Be aware that moving from these high grip

compounds to a normal Tarmac surface can unbalance a car particularly in the wet, on bends and

when travelling too quickly.

Finally, slippery spilled diesel is very common on bends, roundabouts and tight junctions near petrol

stations. This is especially dangerous to motorcyclists so allow them plenty of space.

An offer to all our readers

In the spring this year for all our loyal readers we will be offering you all a.

Free Assessment Drive Check and you can also have a free taster of Advanced Driving. Ladies this

includes you too.

This will consist of an Observed drive on different types of roads in and around Doncaster in your

own car with one of Doncaster Advanced Motorists Observers. You will receive a debrief on

completion of your drive.

If would you like to book your place watch this space. Mid week and weekend dates will be available.
