Letter...

‘Long reign our

gracious Queen’...

and so she has!

60 Years at the realm, so much has changed in this time, however, our Queen has remained

consistent in so many ways.

There are lots of events organised over the

Diamond Jubilee long weekend from house parties, street parties and village parties to local

venue events! I hope you enjoy spending time with friends, family and neighbours in celebrating

this historic milestone. Please send your photographs for publication in the July issue of

the Arrow.

Another event to look forward to this month is the Olympic Torch relay which will pass

through Doncaster on Tuesday 26th June. Two historic events in one month!

The deadline for the July issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 20th June. The Arrow

will be delivered from Friday 29th June.

Best Wishes

New Bus Shelter at Main Street

A litter bin has now been delivered and hopefully will shortly be installed in the bus shelter. Fortunately

our Parish Handyman makes frequent visits to the shelter and removes any litter.

Dog Fouling Problems

Members of the Night Response Team from DMBC carry out evening patrols of the streets and play

areas, and DMBC Community Officers regularly walk through the village and engage with dog owners

they see in the early mornings and other times during the day. Hopefully, these visits will lead to a re-

duction in the number of dog fouling offences occurring in the village.

Parking Outside Auckley School and Shops

The Parish Council continues to receive complaints from residents regarding irresponsible parking outside

the school and the shops at Ellers Lane. We are in regular contact with the Police and the Traffic En-

forcement Team and a number of parking tickets have been issued to offenders. We are also corre-

sponding with DMBC’s Senior Highways Officer to see whether any improvements can be made at these

locations.

Sand Deposits, Hurst Lane

Council is liaising with the Manager of the Hanson Quarry at Hurst Lane, following residents’ complaints

regarding surface water gullies blocked with sand and deposits on the road and footway. Hanson’s have

submitted a planning application to re-site the offices and plant further back from the road which will

hopefully lead to a reduction in the amount of sand accumulating at Hurst Lane. It is also hoped that a

wheel wash will be installed to reduce the amount of sand being brought out on the wheels of lorries.

Annual Parish Council Meeting Gillian Warrender and Jennifer Worthington were re-elected as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively

at the annual parish council meeting on 2 May 2012 A full list of members of the council is given below.

Parking on Pavements and Grass Verges

Residents and visitors are asked not to park on pavements and grass verges in order to preserve the appearance of the village. DMBC will be placing ‘No Parking’ signs on grass verges where there is

regular parking. Any obstruction to pedestrians caused by vehicles parking on pavements is an of-fence and penalty notices may be issued.

Keeping Our Parish Clean, Tidy and Safe

Please remember that dog fouling on pavements and grassed areas creates a serious health and

safety risk particularly to children. Dog owners are asked to ensure that if a dog fouls any public area the deposit is collected, wrapped and disposed of in the litter bins provided

Maintenance Work at Kilham Lane Children’s Play Area The work to resurface the children’s playground has been completed and is now fully reopened.

Small areas of the apparatus may be repainted during the coming months and it would be greatly appreciated if any ‘WET PAINT’ signs could be observed. Thank you for your help and cooperation

with this.

throughout the parish over the extended bank holiday weekend.

News from Auckley School

It’s raining, it’s pouring.........

Auckley Nursery children have enjoyed the wet weather. We have been observing how

colours change by adding paint to puddles, using different size containers to collect rain

water and seeing which one filled to the top the quickest. We put on water proof clothing so

we could splash, jump and sing in the rain. Luckily we did manage to go outside in some dry weather. We planted seeds to grow in our

vegetable patch. Let’s hope we have some sunshine soon, not that its stops us from exploring

outside.

Egyptian trip Recently, Year five

have travelled to Weston Park

Museum in Sheffield to examine

their Egyptian artefacts. We

learnt a lot on our visit and even

mummified Fred! We had a great

time making Shabtis, examining

real treasures which were

thousands of years old and

learning about mummification. In

the afternoon we used handheld

computers and completed a

challenge to find out about

different areas of Egypt. We all

had a great time.

Foundation Trip to Austerfield

The Reception class at Auckley

School have been learning about

Minibeasts. On Monday 14th May

we took at trip to the Austerfield

Study centre. We went on a

minibeast hunt looking under

stones and carpet tiles to find

creatures. We found slugs, worms,

millipedes, spiders, ants and many

more. In the afternoon we went

pond dipping and found lots of

different creatures including

water snails, water boatman and

small fish. The weather stayed

dry for us and we all had a

fantastic day learning lots of new

information about minibeasts and

their habitats.

Tag Rugby Competition On Tuesday 8th May a team of twelve year five and six pupils

from Auckley School went to Hayfield Lane School to take part in a tag rugby competition.

We played against four other teams from our Pyramid. There was a fantastic team spirit

with everyone working together, cheering each other on and offering words of encourage-

ment. They all gave a hundred and ten percents and it was a very close competition, but in

the end we came joint second with Branton Maroons. Well done Auckley.

News From Finningley C of E Primary School Big Pedal Winners

The children of Finning-ley along with Miss

Claire Wasazk made a superb effort in the Sustrans Big Pedal com-petition through March

to see us placed first in Yorkshire and 16th in the whole country. The competition was de-

signed to replicate the tour of Britain with each cycle journey to school counting as miles to-wards a total score. The

Bike it Champions held a bike breakfast on the launch day when all those who cycled received toast and juice and we never looked back from there! At the high point on the

19th March we had 71 children out of 184 riding to school. We even had a governor who donned his bike gear and made the trip.

Sheffield Cycle Speedway Club

As part of our Bike It programme we received a cycle speedway taster day from the Sheffield cycle speed-way club. Pupils from year 5 and 6 who had made more than 15 cycle journeys that month were invited to

race against each other over a set oval circuit. The drizzle fell for most of the session on and off and much bravery was needed. The bikes were supplied by SCS and had no brakes! At first pupils were very wary of machines with no stopping power but after a few laps and growing confi-

dence they soon got into the swing of things the fastest 8 are now going to progress into a Finningley v Bawtry match at the cycle speedway track in Sheffield on the 3rd July. The efforts of Mr Hall in demonstrating provided a

few laughs and pointers as to how not to do it so he will just be spectating on the day.

Cycle Art The year 1 pupils in Miss Holly Womack’s class had a fan-tastic day with Tom from Bike It last month when they

used spare cycle parts to create bike art. The children spent a lot of time feeling the different shapes and materi-als the cycle parts were made from before starting to splash the paint. They decided to depict the journey to school on a bike. This was a really interesting look at the

village and presented plenty of challenge in printing. The finished piece of art now hangs in pride of place in our ICT suite.

Page 22: Jun 12, Issue 81, The Branton & Auckley Arrow

Refurbishment.

In 1999 Hawley and Partners were instructed

by Finningley Parish Council to undertake a

survey of the village hall, from this a five year

maintenance plan was drawn up which

eventually turned into a refurbishment

program this was put into the hands of the

management committee to oversee and obtain

the funding.

The work commenced in 2004 when some funding

was acquired, this allowed the outside of the hall to be

refurbished by 2005 to mark the 150th anniversary of

the hall - the bell tower was renewed but the

replica bell was not fitted until 2010, the original bell is

located in the bell tower at Finningley C of E Primary

School.

The rest of the funding was successfully acquired

which allowed for the internal refurbishment to be

completed over the next few years. Wilkinson

Construction were the builders contracted to carry

out the work and they uncovered the original

fireplaces which had not been seen for many years and

they now provide a focal point in the main hall, also

the main outside door and a side entrance door was

renewed and made to look like the original by copying

from old photographs.

It is felt that the refurbishment program was

completed in 2011 and any further work needed will

be classed as on-going maintenance. A scroll of

funders will be produced and displayed in the hall.

The village hall committee members both past and

present who were involved in the refurbishment

program were:

B.Lifsey, E.McNulty, M.Machin, B.Scully, A.Elder,

J.New, E. Cooke, V.Stables, L.White, H.Levine,

N.Britton, P.Reeves, Dr.J.Goodyear.

Many thanks to everyone involved.

If you would like to hire the hall or see what activities are

available please see the 'What's on in Finningley' section at

the back of the magazine.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School Class 4-Medieval Day

On Tuesday 17th April Class 4, who are learning about Castles, had a visit

from some Medieval archers. They brought with them some arms and

armour, that the children got to examine and try on! Then in the

afternoon they set up an archery class in the hall. After both safety

instructions and careful tuition had been given, all of the children (and

even some of the teachers) got to use the bows and arrows. We had

several goes each and by the end of the afternoon, we were beginning to

show a slight improvement! We all agreed that it was a thoroughly

enjoyable day.

The archers-Alan, Jim and Gil were happy to run a weekly after school

archery club, beginning the following week and this is currently being

attended by those children who wanted to further develop their archery

skills!

Conisbrough Castle

On Tuesday 8th May, Class 4

visited Conisbrough Castle. We

began our day with a talk

about castle defence at the

“barbican” and were then

shown around the keep and the

inner ward. After lunch we did

some research and found out

what the remains of the

buildings are. The children

then did some fabulous

sketches. Luckily the rain

stayed away and we all had a

fantastic time!

Class 3’s visit to Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery

Class 3 had an enjoyable morning at

Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery to

take part in a sculpture workshop.

They spent some time looking at the

pieces of sculpture, inside and outside

of the Art Gallery, before discussing

the materials and the stories behind

the pieces.

Then it was down to the Education

Room to create our own 3D works of

art in clay. There were models of

people, vehicles, animals, fruit baskets

and volcanoes to mention but a few.

We made little baskets to bring them

home in, too!

On Friday 11th May, Class 5 visited the National Railway Museum in York to learn about Victorian

Railways, which is our History topic for this term. When we got to the Museum, we looked at some

examples of Victorian steam trains and sketched them, including a train that Victoria travelled on

herself. Afterwards, we learnt what it was like to work or travel on a Victorian railway: we

dressed as firemen, drivers and Station Masters, went on a first and third class carriage, and

learnt about all the rules you had to obey if you worked on the trains. Did you know there could be

as many as 800 rules to learn if you worked on the railways?

After we had had our lunch, we looked at an art gallery showing what Victorian people thought

about the railways, and then we went into the Main Hall to look at all of the trains in there. We

saw the steam engine which was used as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films and even

a replica of Stephenson’s Rocket. There was even time to see how trains have developed since

Victorian times and have a look at the Japanese Bullet Train. All in all, we had a great day at the

National Railway Museum!

On Saturday 12th May, 22 Jubilate children and 7 adults went to the Shrine of our Lady of

Egmanton for the 2012 Children's Pilgrimage. We had dance, singing and craft activities and we

made 'Gratitude boxes'

which we filled with notes

to remind us of all that we

have to be grateful for. The

children's mass was led by

Father Christopher Levy

and Sarah and Alexia did

the readings and Ellie, Anya,

Georgina and Jack were

servers. We went for a walk

and blew bubbles along the

way, to let everyone know

we were there on such a

lovely, fun day for Jesus.

We all had a really good

time.

Class R were invited by Jessica at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to visit and welcome the 3 Amur

Leopards to Branton. We all made leopard masks and a banner to help make them feel at home!

The leopards were given some meat and came very, very close to us – they were fantastic!! They

showed us their very sharp teeth and beautiful fur. Thank you Jessica for inviting us – we had a

great time.

On Wednesday 25th April, Class 2 visitied

Austerfield Study Centre because we are

studying plants and animals in our local

environment. We all had an enjoyable day,

despite being drenched by the heavy rain. In

the morning we went pond dipping and caught

many interesting creatures which we later

looked at through magnifying glasses so we

could identify them. After lunch, (still raining!)

we tried to look at different plant habitats,

but after a brief look and collection of plant

leaves we were rained off!

Back inside the classroom we built a tree (with

children) to show the different parts, had a

quiz about fruits and a story about the needs

of plants. A good wet day was had by all.

We hope you enjoyed reading about all our

activities this month. We will share more of

our news in the next edition.

Best Wishes,

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School Crucial Crew

Our year 6 class went to the Lifewise

Centre at Rotherham to take part in the

Crucial Crew experience. Crucial Crew is a

lifelike scenario-based learning experience

delivered to year six pupils from schools

across South Yorkshire. Specialist officers

and representatives from other agencies

deliver these scenarios designed to provide

young people with the knowledge, skills and

strategies to make informed choices in

everyday life in order to stay safe and away

from criminal activity. Our pupils

participated in situations, which included; Road safety, Internet Safety and Cyber bullying,

Bus Safety, Arson, Drug and Alcohol Awareness and a Youth Court.

Year 2

As part of their Learning Challenge, “Why do we like to be beside the seaside?”

Our year 2 class have had their role-play area set up as a Travel Agent and they looked at

holiday destinations as well as looking at photographs of their grandparents at the seaside

for a comparison of

days gone by. Iinstead

of going to the seaside,

they bought the

seaside to school. In

the outside Classroom

Area a beach was set

up with paddling pools,

sand and seashells,

rock pool with fishing

nets and an ice-cream

parlour. The children

enjoyed spending time

playing at the ‘seaside’

and one afternoon even

enjoyed eating ice

creams and ice-lollies.

The only thing that was

missing was some lovely

warm sunshine!

The Big Pedal

At Hayfield Lane we have taken part in the ‘Big Pedal 2012’, which is a cycling competition

spanning over 3 weeks. It works a bit like the Tour de France in that each day of the race is

a new stage following a different Sustrans cycle route around the UK. It is a way of

encouraging children to come to school on their bike. With over 1,228 trips to school on

either a bike or scooter, we have secured 3rd place over the Yorkshire and Humber region.

We have won a BMX bike show by Keelan Phillips who will also be running workshops with

some children.

A Comic Joins The Parish

Exciting news! On the 1st of July I have a comedienne coming to work with me in the parishes.

In the summer the Reverend Louise Tinniswood will be joining us. She will be working alongside me for up

to four years, before leaving to lead a parish on her own. It will be great to have Louise with us, and I’m

sure she will become a familiar face around Auckley, Blaxton and Finningley as the months go by.

So, for this month I’ll sign off, and allow Louise to have a few words.

Blessings.

Neil

Louise Tinniswood - This is me!

I’m originally from the North East, very close to the Angel of the

North, but I moved to Sheffield in 1997 to start work at Chesterfield

College. I worked as a Lecturer and Programme Manager there in the

department of Media and Performing Arts for 13 years. I enjoyed my

time at the college but knew towards the end of my time in teaching

that God wanted me to move on and felt very much called to ordained

ministry.

I’ve been training at St John’s College, Nottingham since September

2010 and have found this experience to be immensely challenging both

academically and spiritually but also hugely rewarding and formational.

Living within a Christian community has allowed me to develop a

deeper sense of myself and what God wants me to do.

I am engaged to Paul who works as a driver for the NHS. We are

getting married at the start of the summer in 2013.

In our spare time Paul and I enjoy going to the

cinema and eating out. I confess to being a big Harry

Potter and Tintin fan but my main passion outside

work is stand-up comedy. Paul and I go to the

Edinburgh Fringe Festival every summer and I have

been known to perform stand-up routines of my

own when the situation arises.

We are both very much looking forward to serving

in Auckley, Finningley and Blaxton. I am hoping that

we settle in quickly and that I can continue to hear

God’s voice clearly guiding me.
