Editors Letter..... Well the

sparkly is on ice and we should all be preparing to see in 2010. For those of us past the age of 30, 2010 sounds like the

name of some futuristic movie!! Maybe it‘s just me, I can‘t believe where the time goes, I know it‘s a cliché, but it‘s so true!

For those of you looking to do something different in 2010, Hayfield FE Centre offers

a vast range of courses to suit every taste, enrolment is Mon 4th & Tues 5th January at The Hayfield school. For those who want to get physical, Club impact are

offering special packages for the New Year.

You will see a we have a new ‗whats on‘

review page for the cinema and new dvd releases, let me know what you think of Dex‘s reviews and if there is anything you

would like him to review in the future.

Unfortunately, due to the holidays, we had

to go to print far earlier than normal so this month‘s issue has missed most of the special Christmas events we all look

forward to. The February issue will have all the photographs from the Auckley Christmas Market and Carols at the New

Kilham hall in Branton.

I would like to take this opportunity to

thank all Arrow readers, advertisers and contributors for their support over the year and to wish you all a happy and

prosperous 2010.

Happy New Year

Lynsey’s wild idea becomes a

roaring success Parti Animals is a Doncaster based business which

was set up by owner Lynsey Chambers (photographed right) in April 2009. Initially Lynsey

New Year health advice for pet owners

Now that Christmas is over, many of us may be feeling the effects of over indulgence during the

festive period. January is traditionally a time when we think about joining the gym or going on a diet

but owners should also be thinking about their pet‘s waistlines too.

An overweight pet is just as serious as an overweight owner, but many are not even aware their pet

may be carrying extra weight. The health implications for pets can also be very serious with both

diabetes and arthritis linked to pet obesity. These conditions are manageable, especially if caught

early, but making sure your pet is a healthy weight will significantly reduce the risk of them

developing in the first place.

At Vets4Pets in Doncaster we have been running an initiative called the Kilo Crunch Challenge,

which aims to address the issue of pet obesity and

offers overweight pets a free weight check along

with diet and exercise advice to help achieve a

target weight.

The challenge has now come to an end but many

thanks to everyone that entered, We will be

announcing the practice winner soon. However,

we are still committed to making sure owners

have the help and advice they need to ensure

their pets remain happy and healthy. Managing a

pet‘s diet and exercise is a long term commitment

and owners can still bring their pets in for free

weight check consultations.

Please ask in the practice for more details at

These worries may be anything from minor personal household budgeting to the more serious issues surrounding debt counselling and money management. A client may find themselves in a position

which includes late credit card or loan payments, rent, mortgage or utility arrears. Whatever the problem our advisors are trained to help you start to move forward and manage your financial

income against outgoings. Together you will both prepare a full financial assessment and where necessary our advisor will speak with your creditors and negotiate a budget plan on your behalf, this

options available to you. These options range from :

Administration Order

Possible Write-offs or Charitable payments towards debts

Whilst working within the community either

with individuals or organisations and partnerships it is evident how financial burdens

along with daily commitments not only creates financial worries but also adds to the emotional

stresses placed on the individual let alone the impact it places on their relationships and family

unit. We understand that no matter what your

previous working background is, it is always difficult to accept financial changes in your

circumstances. The worry of redundancy and/or long term unemployment can become a huge

burden, we are there to not only help you to control your budgeting but also to signpost you

to other services that you may need.

If any of the above relates to your

present or future financial well being please call us on 01709 868880. Although this is a Conisbrough

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School

There is no nicer place to be at Christmas than in a primary school! In December we

enjoyed many Christmas activities with the children.

An Out of this World Christmas

All the children in the Juniors took part in our fantastic play „An Out of this World

Christmas‟ that included aliens, spacemen, a space ship, Father Christmas and the nativity !

The children‟s singing was wonderful and we certainly have some budding actors and

actresses in school. Our collection after the concert raised £209.64 for the Bluebell Wood

Children‟s Hospice.

The Innkeeper’s Breakfast

Well done to all the children in the Infants for their performances of „The Innkeeper‟s

Breakfast‟. Our story was all about the very hungry innkeeper who was disturbed from

eating his breakfast by continual visitors to his inn in the form of shepherds, travellers and

To advertise please call 01302 534256 or 07795 387937 21

kings. Of course, when the inn keeper went

into the stable himself he saw baby Jesus

and no longer minded his breakfast being

disturbed! The Infants play included the

cutest camels I have ever seen in a nativity

play!

Factory Week

The first week in December is always our

„Factory Week‟. This involved every child in

each class making a variety of craft items

to sell at our Christmas Fair. The children

made so many lovely things including wind

chimes, Christmas snow shakers, ice cream

cone edible Christmas tree treats, deco-

rated mugs, biscuits, candle decorations,

bracelets, decorated boxes, masks and the

list goes on! Our Christmas Fair was very

well attended, with children eager to buy

the things they had made. The money

raised at our Christmas Fair pays for extra

curriculum events for the children e.g. Class

3‟s puppet making workshop day, our Henry

V111 actor who visits Class 5 for the day

etc. Many thanks to parents and relatives

who supported our Fair so well.

Young Voices Concert

On 25th November 2009 our Jubilate Club

went to the „Young Voices‟ Concert at Shef-

field Arena. Neve, Bethany and I inter-

viewed some of the people who went and

these were our answers. Mrs Dilks says

“the singing and the behaviour was the best

ever!” We also interviewed Mr Elvin and he

said “I loved it when the arena went pitch

black and the glow sticks lit up!” We had a

choir practice in the afternoon and many of

our parents and family came to the concert

in the evening. We learned to work to-

gether and that not all children are as for-

tunate as us as the concert raises money

for charities. By Neve, Bethany and Lydia

Best Wishes, EA Crayton

What could be better, rolling hills sun streaked meadows and blue blue skies. Laying on the

top of one of those hills we took a mid- morning break, enjoying a well deserved rest and to

(literally) take the weight off our shoulders.

That was the second day of our Duke of Edinburgh expedition and we were having a great time. Earlier in

the year we formed a team, by the name of lynx, and since then we‘ve gone from strength to strength.

We joined the award group in Cantley after becoming interested in the scheme after looking at the duke

of Edinburgh website (www.theaward.org/participants) although the website does not do justice to the fun

we‘ve had!

‗The award group helps us to be more independent‘, the others chip in. It certainly does, you cook your

own food and carry all your gear- what an adventure! ‗I really enjoyed it‗ someone says, ‗although I‘m not

sure about the wisdom of staying up all night and getting up at six‘, we all laugh, our team all crammed into

a small 3 man tent to play cards in the semi-darkness, we were still finding sweets in our sleeping bags the

next morning.

Now we‘re being even more adventurous, we‘re

planning a canoeing expedition, so it‘s all hands on

deck for training. You certainly do get what you put

in to the duke of Edinburgh. It‘s all about pushing

yourself to the limit and experiencing the joys of

success. If you‘re aged between 14-25 you‘re eligible

to do the duke of Edinburgh.

Christmas Concerts As many of you will know our

Nursery is now part of the main

school and it is lovely to have the

little ones with us here. Their

nativity was just wonderful with

performances from both the

morning and afternoon children.

Reception and Key Stage 1 delighted

us all with their „Wiggly Nativity‟. All

the children dressed up

and acted out their scenes

wonderfully. They sang

really well and there wasn‟t

a dry eye in the house.

Key Stage 2 also put on a

fantastic show this year

with their version of

Cinderella. The show took

the form of a traditional

pantomime complete with

ugly sisters and a ghost!

There was much laughter

and the children all did

extremely well.

In addition to the concerts

we enjoyed hosting our

annual senior citizens tea

party where members of

our community are invited

into school to enjoy coffee

and mince pies. This year

they were entertained by

the Key Stage 2 pantomime

and a lovely afternoon was

had by all.

Its freezing, its

winter, and after

the frenzy of

Christmas, you’re

looking for

something

different, this my

friend is the film

that will hit the

spot for you.

For countless people

when they first

premiered the trailer

they perhaps concluded that this is just a children‘s film, nothing that will even survive on the screens

further than a month, but when the music surges in like a bitter wind and we spectate the monumental

characters exploring the mythical landscapes, we grow enthusiastic to perceive that Where the Wild

Things Are will be reserved in our minds and not just regarded as a night out at the local cinema.

The now 39 year old Spike Jonze has surprisingly minimal capability in directing a film, before this he only

had a couple of music videos and the remotely stylish Adaptation accredited to his name. Is this an

unacceptable concept you might hesitate to think? Definitely not as the result exceeds spectacular.

The child that is Max always craves to acquire enjoyment in his life, he feels much wiser than the ones that

confine him, and also possesses an endless imagination. After a miss out on supper the disobedient boy

that is occasionally Max is appointed to go to his bed immediately, once there and as the night advances

his surroundings begin to energize to life and abnormal creatures grasp him into the nightfall on an

enchanting and inspiring journey.

Most of the population will maintain the knowledge that this is an adaptation from a children‘s classic book

penned by Maurice Sendak, which is just 48 pages in length. Accommodating spine tingling animation that

will literally make you feel like your there, and a momentous sound track featuring the dynamic Arcade

Fire and Karen O from the indie favourites Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you will find yourself impressed by what will

be a treasure for generations to come, a new apex for filmmaking has been affirmed and this is an up to

date reminder of what a staggering book it was, and still is.

(500) days of Summer (DVD)

Ever been in love with a person that hasn‘t expressed the equal feelings for you, your left hanging on

hoping for a chance? Well then this is the perfect slice of entertainment for you. At the first exposure of

Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has fallen for what he summarizes as the

girl of his dreams, sadly she rejects these feelings being complicated to apprehend and calmly modifies the

direction of the two into a bit of cat and mouse, everything slowly cascades down hill which bewilders

young Toms mind.

I didn‘t enter this film with grand hopes my only expectations were for the actor

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his been present in such astounding projects as The

Lookout and Brick which are both in my world neglected classics for our generation.

His acting I feel has elevated to a new range as he is accompanied by the pleasant

Zooey Deschanel (Surf‘s Up, Almost Famous). For me these two combined makes

for an un beatable compound as they struggle their ways through the ups and downs

of human emotions. We embrace Tom mostly scratching his head and challenging the

theory of love during the entirety of the film, supplying us with some real life facts

and thoughts. While Summer on the other hand teasefully tip toes her way out of

trouble by representing the girl you just can‘t quite understand.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Don’t be dim this winter A Happy New Year to all our readers. Being able to see the road ahead to avoid danger and stop safely in an emergency is a necessity for all

drivers, especially when driving in the hours of darkness.

(Doncaster Advanced Motorists) offers the following tips on how to check and use vehicle lights in

preparation for the short and dark days.

Check the lights

Regularly check that all lights work. While someone observes the lights around the car, switch on each

light one-by-one: headlights, sidelights, fog lights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, hazard warning

lights and number plate lights

If alone, park by a reflective surface such as a garage door, illuminate all lights in sequence and look for the

reflections

Use the lights

When away from street lighting, visibility is limited to the range of the headlights. This varies greatly

between dipped and full-beam; slow down when driving on dipped headlights. Lights give motorists an

early warning of each other‘s presence. Look for approaching lights when driving around corners, adjust

the position of the vehicle accordingly and dip your

own headlights to avoid dazzling other motorists

If oncoming drivers forget to dip their lights, slow

down and give your eyes time to adjust to avoid

blindness. Never stay on full-beam to retaliate It is

difficult to judge approaching speed in the dark so

take extra care when making a manoeuvre and

always allow traffic to pass when waiting to pull out

at a junction

The weather will also dictate when to use headlights

and fog lights. Use fog lights sparingly; switch them

on only when visibility is below 100 metres. Leaving

them on after fog has disappeared is an offence and a

danger to other motorists A general good rule of

thumb is to switch on dipped headlights during heavy

rain and poor light

Never use lights to dazzle or cause discomfort to

other road users – this is against the law

Review Of The Year

Well have you reviewed the year? What has happened to you in the last

12 months? What things have changed? Were they good, bad or

indifferent?

I‘m sure some TV channel or another will have had a review show of some

description – the trivial ―Jordon leaves jungle‖, or the serious, ―more troops deployed to Afghanistan.‖ When we

think back over a year or so, or watch a television programme, it can be a

shock that some things have changed so much.

On a day to day basis we don‘t per-

haps notice some changes. Yet look back over a length of time and sud-

denly changes are everywhere. For example, I don‘t notice my receding

and greying hairline, until I compare it to a photo taken a year ago. I‘m think I‘m still good looking, but the hair isn‘t quite the same!!

A while ago I visited my home town, and went with my parents to a local nature reserve. I had lived there for 28 years of my life, yet on the way back took a wrong turning. Why? Because they‘d

built a new roundabout, and stuck a McDonalds right where I wanted to go! I was very frustrated, and often change can be that – frustrating. It takes us out of our comfort zone, the familiar be-

comes a stranger, and the way ahead can become unclear.

As a result, I know many people who holiday in the same place each year. Why? Because they find it instantly relaxing to be somewhere they know and understand. However, I‘m not suggesting all

change is negative, it can be exciting and very much needed. Yet, sometimes, we need some help and stability to guide us through it – whether it be good or bad.

On my own journey through life I face many changes, some positive and others challenging. How-

ever as a Christian I journey with Christ, and the Bible offers an amazing promise. ―Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for-

ever‖ (Hebrews 13:7)

So in the changing world around us, we can find a sure and unshakable foundation on which to build

and live our lives.

I pray you have a peaceful and happy new year
