Dear Parents and Community Members,

NAPLAN Once again this national assessment program is scheduled to take place in schools across all states and territories in Australia. These are planned to occur in early May next term for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Today students in Years 3 and 5 have been given an information flyer to take home to parents. This flyer provides a great deal of information for parents about the assessment program and I would encourage parents to take the time to read through this information. Dalmain Primary School students will essentially complete all NAPLAN assessments online. The exception being the Year 3 Writing component which will be completed on paper. Parents with further queries about NAPLAN can speak to their child’s class teacher or contact the school administration. YEAR 6 PARENT INFORMATION Parents of students in Year 6 should receive a text message today regarding planning of upcoming activities and events for this year. The letter attached to this text is also available from our school office. Parents are welcome to contact the school office or their child’s class teacher if they have any queries. Have a great long weekend.

Sustainability and Recycling 2021

Year 4 students from TA 8 have been eagerly collecting Dalmain’s recycled paper this term from all areas of the school, as part of our Sustainability program. Their enthusiasm, initiative and maturity completing this task

have been impressive. In writing, students discussed and then wrote about the value of recycling in class and what happens if we don’t recycle?

Recycling

“Jake! Don’t put that in there! Put it in the recycling bin, not the rubbish bin. I’ve got $200 for recycling. It’s good for health, morals and values, plus environmental reasons for the whole world”.

Our health minister has proven that recycling is good for health reasons. We should all recycle. It’s

good for everyone’s health. If you don’t recycle, the air will become toxic; so don’t make me say

that again! Morally we must stop throwing rubbish in waterways because this is the only planet we live on? If we don’t recycle we could lose planet

Earth. Think about the animals? We must recycle. It is bad if we don’t recycle and we could be doomed! Do you want to eat fish filled with

plastic? I bet you don’t?

If we litter, it will damage the environment and ozone layer. Animals would die without their

environment. The air would become toxic and we could suffocate. That would be bad? Wouldn’t it?

Don’t make me say it all again!

Recycling is fun. You can get a healthy workout. It is good for moral reasons and values and great for

the environment.

By Jake B

Recycling Is Good! Right?

Have you ever seen these pictures of the amazing, beautiful and fascinating forests and jungles? Well

they’re getting wrecked or polluted from not recycling… and beaches? Yes beaches! Sea animals are swallowing plastic and when you eat them you

could get sick! I certainly agree we should all recycle for health, morals and values, plus

environmental reasons. Let me tell you why?

Smart individuals realise that recycling is good for your health. If you don’t recycle and you litter, it

could spread bacteria and germs, which will make our clean oxygen dirty and we could all get sick.

Morally, we need to stop throwing rubbish out, so we can do things we love like…going to parks or playgrounds and having friends over. If we don’t

recycle, we will not want to go outside!

Environmental reasons are so important. People who recycle save animals and stop the ozone from spreading. I don’t want to die from the ozone hole,

do you? I also want clean oxygen.

I hope my argument has convinced you to recycle for health, morals and values, plus environmental

reasons. Did I convince you?

P&C President’s Report As P&C President, I would like to present a short review of the school year 2020. I would like to acknowledge the challenges we have been facing, the successes we have been celebrating and address my heartfelt thanks to our P&C committee, the school, and the wider school community.

2020 – A year that got all of us by surprise, when seemingly overnight COVID-19, had brought the whole world into turmoil shortly after it first emerged. COVID-19 meant for our school and school staff that big adjustments and changes had to be implemented within a very short time. Parents/caregivers suddenly had to juggle school, work, and daily chores at the same time in the same place with everyone around. For our P&C it meant that planned events had to be cancelled, meetings could not be held, and our Dalmain Delight Café had to close for an uncertain amount of time.

In addition, our P&C started the school year 2020 as a newly found committee, where a few people were new to their individual roles, new to the P&C environment and some even new to the school system. Many of you know better than I that it takes time for a new committee to find their way together and the circumstances of COVID-19 did not make this any easier, since we were not able to socialise and come together. However, looking at the bigger picture and comparing Australia, especially WA to other countries around the world, let us acknowledge that we have been very blessed in this part of the world given that we were mainly back to normal by June 2020.

Despite the challenges we were facing in 2020 I think that we can be proud of the projects we have accomplished to enhance the school experience of our children. We can look back on a variety of projects which had the children as much involved in the process as it was for them. Projects like the 30th anniversary photoshoot, as well as the School Toilet Project. Investments were taken which the children get to enjoy throughout their school time, such as the T-Shirts for our future sport events and the teachers Wishlist to enhance the individual classrooms and/or classroom resources. Spendings were taken for the DUG and the Dalmain Delight Cafe of which both hold so much value for the children, such as the learning experience in the DUG or the healthy food experience from the canteen. Events that were organised to bring parents/caregivers together, such as the first aid demonstration.

Finishing my report, I would like to use this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to Don & Alessandra, all P&C members, and our school community for their great support during my first year as P&C President.

Thank you everyone for attending our meetings throughout the year and bringing your ideas, thoughts, questions, and requests to the committee. Thank you to all P&C members who have taken on a role within our committee in 2020 and performed their role with an amazing effort and dedication. Thank you to our fundraising committee, who has come together regularly and organised some wonderful fundraising events for our children with great effort and true passion. Thank you to Barbara Connick for running our Dalmain Delight Café so passionately, for looking after our children by serving them healthy foods and for connecting with them in such wonderful way. Thank you to everyone who has taken the lead on projects & events we have performed this year for the children and our school community. Thank you to all our volunteers, who supported us in the canteen, in the book club, in the DUG, during fundraisers, events, busy bee days and/or projects.

A special last thank you to the school and all school staff, for supporting our families and particularly the children to adjust to all the changes COVID-19 has brought along and to learn to thrive in our new world past COVID-19. Thank you for the extra time and effort invested to ensure that the children’s learning is always first class.

Sabine Steegmann P&C President

Shrink your ‘Guard Dog’

Our ‘Guard Dog’ (amygdala) gets stress wrong sometimes. It mistakes every day stress, like a friend leaving you out of a game, failing a test, not getting your way etc as a threat to your life. Sometimes we can find ourselves shouting, pushing or speaking in a way we later feel bad about.

Listen to your body: Can you feel your heart rate quicken? Do you feel warmer suddenly or sick in your belly?

Give your ‘Wise Owl’ a chance to switch on by this simple breathing technique:

1. Take 3 anchor breaths.

Feeling nervous? Wound up? Over excited? Possibly can’t focus. Find your ‘anchor spot’, a place on your body where you can feel yourself breathing. Boats use anchors to keep them in one spot in the water. Waves push the boat up and down and side to side, but still the boat remains where it is. When we notice our breath, we are finding our anchor spot, which grounds us and reminds us that we are here in this moment. As you breathe in, say to yourself: “in”. As you breathe out, say to yourself: “out”. You can do this at the start of class, during your break, or at the end of class – any time, all you need is two minutes. You are practicing mindful breathing – a good thing to do while you are calm.

2. Try finger breathing.

Trace your fingers on your left hand with your right hand’s index finger. As you go up a finger breathe in and down the other side: breathe out. Trace the entire hand and then swap.

AND..

3. Think of one thing or person you are thankful for.

Stay tuned for the next Grow Your Mind tip.

Health and Well Being At Dalmain Primary School, the Health and Well Being of our students is a priority and our school is supporting the development of this important aspect in a variety of ways. We have introduced a whole school focus on developing our students' knowledge of what it means to be 'totally' healthy. Our Health curriculum will include the three key components of Physical Health, Mental Health and Social Health. Our students will be supported to understand that Physical Health involves diet, exercise, sleep and other factors that impact on their bodies. Social Health involves relationships with friends, classmates, teachers, family and other members of their community. Mental Health involves them understanding and responding effectively to their thoughts and feelings. We are supporting our students with a range of strategies and activities, and more information will be included in future newsletters.
